Show Notes Episode 422: The Vampire of Sacramento Part Two of Spooktacular 2023 “Gavin St James, Vampyre Hunter” This week Host Dave Bledsoe remembered that time when he got drunk in Sacramento and realized Sacramento was a really boring place to get drunk. (Even drunk, Sacramento is really boring) On the show this week we continue Spooktacular 2023 with one of the vilest serial killers in American crime history, Richard Chase, the Vampire of Sacramento. Along the way Dave takes you on an audio tour of the Big Tomato (That really IS what they call Sacramento) it only takes thirty seconds because there is so little to see. Then we dive right into why Sacramento has SO MANY serial killers. (See the part about how boring it is) After that it is straight into the backstory of Richard Trenton Chase, a regular kid growing up in regular life in the 1950s with regular 1950's kid hobbies, like torturing and killing small animals. (You want a trigger warning? On a show about a serial killer? You didn't infer that from the topic?) We will meet Richard's family, who were not loving, in fact they had a LOT to do with what Richard became. (Well that and Richard's peep being on the fritz) We learn how Richard mixed his own smoothies at home with all natural farm fresh ingredients. The 1970s were a really rough time for Sacramento, CA - not only was the East Area Rapist (later coined the Golden State Killer) terrorizing the community, but a blitz of killings were committed from December 1977 to January 1978 that haunt the community to this day.  A killer who only entered homes with unlocked doors because he felt that meant he was "welcome."  A killer who literally drank his victims' blood - the Vampire of Sacramento.  Note from Caro: we had a little audio issue at the end of the episode so we had to do some splicing, please forgive us! Last week we took a little look at Richard Chase's past, the trials and tribulations, and even a few of his struggles. Don't get me wrong, I've got no sympathy for him, or what he did, but he can't shoulder every ounce of blame for his actions. But what were those actions exactly? Well, we know he shot and killed Ambrose Griffin, and when we left off he was in the process of breaking into Terry Wallin's house. Well he did, and what he did when he got inside was truly brutal, the acts of not a man, but a monster. Calling him an animal would be too much of an insult to a shark. Chase, after having his way with Wallin wasn't done. He had a thirst for blood, quite literally. What was found at Teresa Wallin's murder was disturbing, but one thing of not was rings left of the floor, rings in the shape of buckets. Buckets to put blood into. This was a theme at his next murder as well, which happened to be a triple homicide, that later turned into a fourth. All in all, Chase ended the lives of six people, and he did not discriminate. Two of his victims were children, three if you count Wallin's unborn child.  Chase was a piece of human trash, with multiple mental disorders, that were later judged to have little to no role in his terrible acts. Having a mental illness is not an excuse for what he did. Plenty of people have mental illnesses, and they don't disembowel people at will. Personally, I blame his mother. She was apathetic at best towards him and his activities, and flat out denied he could have done what he did - probably because it would look bad on her. The '70's in the USA was a wild time, man. There were hippies, there were drugs, there was the run off of the feel good 60's, but there was also war, and crime, and violence. It was a really weird juxtaposition within America's society, and it was really a breeding ground for serial killers. You had Bundy, Gacy, Zodiac and that's just to name a few. But among those you had a little known, but very disturbing one called Richard Trenton Chase: The Vampire of Sacramento. Chase was born in 1950, and ever since his teenage years, something just wasn't right with Richard. It started with the frustration of not being able to maintain an erection, to eventually, in his adult years drinking blood. Yeah, you read that right. Richard Chase felt the need to drink the blood, and eat the organs of living things. It started with rabbits and birds, escalated to cats and dogs... and well, I'm not sure I need to spell out where it went from there. Chase was institutionalized a few times over his life, but nothing ever stuck, in fact he was at one point deemed "not a danger to himself or others" by an actual doctor. He immediately stabbed, killed and ate that doctor... And was still free to go! No, I'm kidding, that didn't happen. But he was deemed okay enough to live amongst the rest of the world, and pets everywhere trembled. After his release, neighborhood animals went missing, his mom walked in on him doing terrible things to a dead cat, and strangely enough, people started to die.
