This interview is part of a special series of the Teaching Canada's History podcast where we spoke with the finalists for the 2021 Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching. In Randall Keast's project, The Human Rights Symposium, students must conduct in-depth research into a marginalized group in Canada and the challenges they faced in their pursuit for equality. Once they have conducted their research, students must present their findings in seminar-style groups. This allows for students to not only engage in a conversation about the historical influences that led to marginalization of these groups, but also provides students an opportunity to directly engage with the history and teach their peers what they've learned themselves. At the end of the symposium, students are asked to reflect on the process and explore the notion of a just society. Episode 49 is a conversation between myself and Randall Keast, currently the head of Global Education and who does not own a cellphone(fun fact!). This was his first ever PODCAST and he did great! Daphne & the Mystery Machines from Tennessee have quickly made a name for themselves touring up and down the southeast and Midwest. Their quirkiness is balanced by dark themes and tones. Playfulness can soon turn to sorrow with singers Daphne Culver and Jenn Palmer playing off each others strengths. With a tour of Europe scheduled for 2017, the band are determined to trudge forth and make their mark in the Americana / Folk genre. Lindsay Keast is the current outreach coordinator for the Des Moines Music Coalition (DMMC). She oversees many day to day operations of the non-profit and organizes many of their prominent events like Music U and Little Big Fest. She has stepped up to the plate and is still finding her footing in a rich music scene that has its fair share of revelers and critics. In her limited down time, Lindsay writes, records and performs in all female indie rock outfit, Honeycreeper as well as her ongoing avante garde, experimental project, Tree Branch Twig. Honeycreeper's debut ep is available NOW on bandcamp.

Raised in rural B.C., Mackenzie studied urban planning and design at Waterloo before falling victim to Hogtown's cosmopolitan tractor beam. We spoke with Mackenzie about growing up in a brewery, converting to the Church of Toronto, and how developers can actually help poor people. Mackenzie also talked about Alpha Cities, encouraging young planners to think crazy, and his Top 3 public spaces in Toronto. (Oh, and Drake, obviously.)
