In this episode, we speak with Dr. Mehmet Çelik about his new book, Empire and Nation in the City: Rusçuk from Ottoman Rule to Bulgarian Statehood, published by Syracuse University Press in 2026.The book tells the story of Rusçuk — known today as Ruse, in northern Bulgaria — a cosmopolitan port city on the Danube that, within the span of just fifteen years, passed through three entirely different political systems: a modernized Ottoman provincial administration, a Russian military provisional government, and a newly independent Bulgarian national state. Through this one city, Çelik offers a striking new account of how empires end and nations begin — and how much continuity lies beneath the surface of what looks like rupture.At the heart of the book is the Tanzimat reform era, when Governor Midhat Pasha turned Rusçuk into a laboratory of Ottoman modernization. The city became home to the first provincial municipality in Ottoman history, the first agricultural credit cooperatives, a bilingual newspaper, secular mixed schools, and elected councils in which Muslim and Bulgarian Christian representatives sat side by side. Çelik shows that the Ottoman Empire, at its most ambitious, offered Bulgarians a genuine political alternative to nationalism — and that many took it, among them the chorbaci, the Bulgarian Christian notables who invested in and co-governed the Ottoman system, and who have been largely written out of Bulgarian national memory ever since.When Russia invaded in 1877–78, Rusçuk surrendered peacefully — a telling sign of how deeply the city's diverse population had been woven into the Ottoman fabric. What followed was equally surprising: the Russian provisional government preserved the Ottoman institutional framework almost entirely, relabeling its councils and offices rather than dismantling them. The Bulgarian national government that came next did much the same, adopting Ottoman tools of minority management — including the military exemption tax and millet-style community administration — at the very moment it was defining itself in opposition to the Ottoman past.Çelik also uncovers a remarkable story of religious conversion under Bulgarian rule: while some Muslims and Catholics converted pragmatically to Bulgarian Orthodox Christianity to secure the rights of the dominant group, Protestant conversion driven by the long-standing American Methodist Episcopal mission quietly gained new ground. 1898 school of PlatoPlato Witnessed Syracuse's Rise Of TyrannyJames Romm, Bard College, author of Plato and the Tyrant: The Fall of Greece's Greatest Dynasty and the Making of a Philosophic Masterpiece, Part One: Host John Batchelor interviews Romm regarding Dionysius the Elder's rise to power as archon of Syracuse following the Peloponnesian War. Dionysius consolidated rule using a fortified island peninsula and an unorthodox double marriage on a single day, creating fierce family rivalries. Syracusan court life became notorious for excessive feasting, heavy drinking, and luxury. Plato made three visits to Syracuse, initially connecting through Dion, the ruler's brother-in-law. After Dionysius I died, Dion invited Plato to tutor Dionysius the Younger toward enlightened constitutional governance. However, Dionysius II grew suspicious of Dion's letters to Carthaginian diplomats, exiling Dion and placing Plato under house arrest. Plato was eventually rescued by Archytas of Tarentum. Romm explains that these chaotic Syracusan political experiences directly informed Plato's depiction of tyranny and the philosopher-king in the Republic. (1)

UNDATED ROMAN PLATO ACADEMYDion's Revolution And Plato's Philosophical LegacyJames Romm, Part Two: Romm details Dion's invasion of Syracuse to overthrow Dionysius II. Dion was welcomed as a liberator but clashed with populist fleet commander Heraclides. Dion ultimately orchestrated Heraclides's political murder, plunging Dion into deep depression before he was assassinated by Callippus, a fellow Academy student. Dionysius II later returned to power but abdicated when Corinthian general Timoleon arrived with a mercenary army. Dionysius lived out his remaining years peacefully in Corinth as a music teacher, inspiring the ancient proverb "Dionysius is in Corinth." Romm examines how Plutarch and Plato sought to protect the Academy's reputation despite these political failures. The discussion explores the Republic, including the hierarchy of regimes, the Allegory of the Cave, and the Myth of Er. Finally, Romm assesses Plato's Epistles, noting how the Seventh Letter defended Dion. (2)

Nick Nichay is entering his first season at Dartmouth College as a Men's Basketball Assistant Coach under Brett McConnell.  Nick previously served as the Head Coach at D3 Franklin & Marshall College for seven seasons where he led the Diplomats to consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2025 and 2026. Nichay was elevated to head coach in the spring of 2020. He served as the Interim Head Coach at the start of the 2019-20 season after spending the previous seven seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with Franklin & Marshall. Prior to arriving at Franklin & Marshall, Nichay spent two years as an assistant coach at the Division II level with Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y.  and began his coaching career with one season as a Division III assistant at Hartwick College after graduating from Rutgers where he served as a manager for 3 seasons with the Men's Basketball Program. On this episode Mike & Nick discuss how his lifelong love of basketball developed from playing in his driveway and listening to Nets games on the radio. Nick explains how working as a manager at Rutgers and gaining experience in every aspect of college basketball helped him build the foundation for a coaching career. Nick reflects on the mentors and opportunities at Hartwick, Le Moyne, and Franklin & Marshall that shaped his coaching philosophy and taught him the value of preparation, relationships, and consistent improvement.
