Dave welcomes everyone back for Episode 2 of Nothing to Hyde…by once again calling it Nowhere to Hide. Fortunately, Kim Bokamper is there to keep Dave somewhat on track as the guys tackle some much bigger questions surrounding the Miami Dolphins heading into the 2026 season. The Dolphins have one of the youngest rosters in football, could start as many as eight rookies, and are coming off what Bo calls one of the most “hideous” three-game stretches of preseason football he's ever seen. So what exactly should Dolphins fans expect this season?Dave and Bo discuss Malik Willis, the addition of former Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord, Miami's young receiving corps, the massive role this rookie class could play and why this season may need to be judged by something other than wins and losses. Then Dave poses the question nobody wants to hear: Is Miami more likely to win four games…or none at all?But this is Nothing to Hyde, so naturally the conversation doesn't stay on football.Dave celebrates Warren Buffett's 96th birthday with an incredible story about calling Berkshire Hathaway and unexpectedly finding himself talking to Buffett for 30 minutes. That sends Bo down memory lane with stories involving Buffett, Don Shula, Edwin Pope—and his daughter having absolutely no idea she was standing near one of the richest men in the world. And finally, the guys tackle perhaps the most important Dolphins debate of all:Who has the greatest mustache in Miami Dolphins history?Jacob Rodriguez? Larry Csonka? Manny Fernandez? Or is Bo shamelessly voting for himself?Plus, Bo reveals why his daughters once cried when he shaved his mustache—and the questionable facial-hair decision he made immediately before his wedding. To follow Dave Hyde's Substack, visit https://davehyde.substack.com/

Josiah Osgood, author of Lawless Republic, Part One: Marcus Tullius Cicero rises as a "new man" from outside Rome's traditional political elite, building an exceptional reputation in the Roman Forum. His debut felony case defends Sextus Roscius against parricide, exposing a corrupt financial conspiracy and establishing his legendary storytelling style. Cicero then transitions to prosecution to take on Gaius Verres, the deeply connected and highly corrupt governor of Sicily. Verres had systematically plundered Sicilian art and failed to defend Syracuse from pirate raids while living luxuriously. Verres flees into exile mid-trial, cementing Cicero's reputation as a daring reformer. (1)

Galen Clavio launches the newly dubbed Bison Briefing on CrimsonCast with a live afternoon episode covering two major Indiana sports topics: the continuing NCAA eligibility mess and the release of Indiana basketball's non-conference schedule.Ryan Phillips joins Galen to break down the latest eligibility confusion involving Class of 2022 athletes, professional opportunities, and whether players who spent time around NFL teams should be able to return to college rosters. They discuss the SEC's statement, the Big Ten's proposed rule, the legal uncertainty around the Wisne case, and what all of this could mean for Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt as Indiana football gets closer to the season. The conversation also gets into the bigger structural problem: college sports keeps trying to operate without a stable, collectively bargained system. Galen and Ryan talk through why the NCAA's current rulemaking keeps leading to lawsuits, why basketball complicates the definition of “professional,” and why the next few weeks could remain messy for athletes trying to decide whether to enroll, practice, sue, or move on.The second half shifts to Indiana men's basketball, where the newly released non-conference schedule gives Darren DeVries and the Hoosiers a stronger slate than fans have seen in recent years. The schedule includes Syracuse, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri, UCF, Bellarmine, Fairleigh Dickinson, Bowling Green, and more.Galen and Ryan like the schedule from a basketball perspective: more name brands, more résumé opportunities, and a better mix of tests and tune-ups. But they also dig into the season-ticket holder issue, because many of the best games are away from Assembly Hall or on neutral floors. That leads to a larger conversation about IU basketball's atmosphere, rebuilding fan trust, and why winning is the only real way to make Assembly Hall feel like Assembly Hall again.

When Dr. Laura Petrescu opened Athena Direct Primary Care & Lifestyle Medicine, she was the only Direct Primary Care physician in the Rochester, NY metropolitan area. Health system leadership thought she was out of her mind. Colleagues told her nobody would pay a membership on top of insurance. The advice everywhere was the same: New York is too restrictive, and DPC will not work here.Today there are seven or eight DPC practices in the Rochester area, and Dr. Petrescu has founded the New York State Direct Care Physicians Alliance with board members from Buffalo, Syracuse, Hudson Valley, and New York City.In this episode of My DPC Story, she and Dr. Maryal Concepcion get specific about the mechanics most physicians never hear.In this episode:Why she filed as a 501(c)(6) business league instead of a 501(c)(3), and why the charitable designation would have blocked advocacy entirelyWhat the state and IRS filings actually cost, and where the paperwork gets returnedHow reading her contract first led to her health system releasing her from a 10-mile non-compete radiusHow to build a board representing rural, metropolitan, and downstate practicesWhy eight busy physician owners vote on motions by email instead of scheduling Zoom callsWhat New York's lab restrictions mean in practice, and why they are the alliance's top legislative priorityHow California organized, from monthly meetings that fizzled to a state summit with 80 physiciansAbout the guest: Dr. Laura Petrescu is triple board certified in internal medicine, lifestyle medicine, and menopause medicine, with 25 years in practice. PODCAST #109 - Joel “Jay-Ray” Anderson

    Broadway Drumming 101

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2026 53:36

Joel “Jay-Ray” Anderson is a drummer that was recently touring with The Wiz.I caught up with him mid-tour. We talked about growing up in a musical family in Fort Lauderdale, learning drums from YouTube and his oldest brother, coming up through the Dillard High School drumline, studying music at Broward College and Florida Memorial University, landing his first tour (Pretty Woman) the week after graduation, and transitioning to The Wiz through a network built one relationship at a time. We got into gospel drumming history, drumline battles, a month spent touring Japan, and why networking, not just chops, is what actually opens doors.Jay-Ray comes from a house full of musicians. His father plays guitar and sings; his oldest brother plays drums and keys; another brother sings, plays drums, and plays saxophone; and a third brother plays bass, guitar, and keys while producing. Jay-Ray's own introduction to the drums came at six years old, when his oldest brother sat him down in front of a kit for the first time. By twelve, he had his own Sonor drum set, a gift from that same brother, and was already teaching himself by copying drumming videos on YouTube.Jay-Ray attended Dillard Center for the Arts, where he played in two jazz bands, marched snare in the wind orchestra and drumline, and got pulled onto snare drum as a freshman after impressing section leader Javon with a string of paradiddles. He talks about the discipline instilled by band directors Christopher Dorsey and Dr. Sheldon McClain, learning traditional grip for the first time, and the intensity of real drumline battles.Jay-Ray studied at Broward College (Associate's in Music Performance) before transferring to Florida Memorial University for his bachelor's degree, where he played under percussion director Taurus Lovely, a 25-year Broadway touring veteran (including Tina Turner: The Musical) who would later become the person who got Jay-Ray his first tour. Jay-Ray's first trip to New York came in 2018, when Dillard's jazz band won the Essentially Ellington competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the same trip where he first saw a Broadway show, Ain't Too Proud. The day after Jay-Ray graduated from Florida Memorial in May 2023, Taurus Lovely called with an audition opportunity for the Pretty Woman national tour. Jay-Ray recorded four songs from the show, landed the gig, and was in rehearsals in Syracuse, New York within months. He talks candidly about the learning curve of running click tracks and Ableton on the road, getting walked through the system by original drummer Kevin Maynard, and the parts of touring nobody warns you about, like setting up and breaking down your own kit on travel days. Over roughly two years with the show, he toured extensively across the U.S. and spent a month performing in Japan (Shinjuku, Tachikawa, Kyoto, and Osaka).Jay-Ray's move to The Wiz came through his network: Sammy Merandino and Quentin “Q” Robinson recommended him, and MD Michael Aarons brought him in. Jay-Ray left Pretty Woman in Wichita and, within a week, was in New York starting rehearsals, spending his off-hours studying original drummer Trevor Holder's book and comparing the Broadway cast recording to the touring arrangement. He also shares how he first met Q Robinson years earlier, showing up at Hamilton's closing show in Fort Lauderdale just to introduce himself.Asked what he'd tell a high school or college drummer chasing a career like his, Jay-Ray's answer is simple: networking. Every opportunity in his career, from Pretty Woman to The Wiz to this very podcast episode, traces back to a relationship someone else made on his behalf.Where to Find Jay-Ray* Instagram & TikTok: @jay.ray04* Facebook: Joel Anderson* Email: joel.r.anderson04@gmail.comResources * Free: How to Land a Broadway Gig Roadmap — subscribe to Broadway Drumming 101 (free or paid) and grab it at broadwayboundbook.com/roadmap* The Broadway Sub Playbook ($7.99) — available at signaturebrandworks.com* Broadway Drumming 101 merch (backpacks, tees, hats, mugs, and more) — signaturebrandworks.com* Broadway Bound and Beyond: A Musician's Guide to Building a Theater Career by Clayton Craddock — out nowClayton Craddock was most recently the drummer for Cats: The Jellicle Ball on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre. James Romm — Multi-Part, Part Two: Professor James Romm details the violent collapse of the Dionysian dynasty and its influence on Plato's writing. Following a falling out and exile, Dion launched an invasion to liberate Syracuse. However, his rule descended into factionalism, culminating in the assassination of his rival Heraclides and Dion's own eventual murder by his soldiers. The chaos ended when Timoleon of Corinth forced Dionysius the Younger to abdicate; the former tyrant famously spent his final years in Corinth as a humble music teacher. Romm explains that these political failures directly informed the Republic, specifically the allegory of the cave and the concept of the philosopher king. While Plato's letters and Plutarch's accounts attempted to whitewash Dion as a virtuous leader, Romm suggests Plato was often politically naive regarding the brutal realities of Syracusan power. (2)

James Romm — Multi-Part, Part One: Professor James Romm, author of Plato and the Tyrant: The Fall of Greece's Greatest Dynasty and the Making of a Philosophic Masterpiece, discusses the rise of the Dionysian dynasty in fourth-century BCE Syracuse, then the most powerful state in the Greek West. Dionysius the Elder consolidated power as a demagogue, using the defensible island fortress of Ortygia and practicing polygamy to secure his rule, though this created deep familial rivalries. Syracuse became famous for Syracusan tables, a lifestyle of extreme luxury and alcoholic excess. Plato, influenced by the execution of his teacher Socrates and the reign of the Thirty Tyrants, viewed Syracuse as a laboratory for his theory of Forms. After a failed initial visit, Plato returned to tutor Dionysius the Younger at the urging of the ruler's brother-in-law, Dion. Plato's goal was to transform the immature, hard-drinking tyrant into an enlightened monarch through lifestyle reform and abstract philosophy. (1)

They get into why youth sports can be an incredible experience for the whole family, but also where parents can take it too far.The conversation shifts to Jason's visit with the TRAIN HARD Men's Club in Syracuse, why consistency beats almost everything when it comes to building something meaningful, and the idea of viewing yourself on an asset versus liability continuum. They wrap with a bigger question: When does a boy become a man? For Gabe and Jason, it has less to do with age and more to do with becoming someone who can provide, protect, serve, and ultimately be a net positive to the people around him. Thanks for tuning in to the Jason Khalipa Podcast!

Gary Segars breaks down the 2026 college football win total board with a simple rule: bet the number, not the logo. The episode separates the market into four buckets — overs that may be underpriced, unders that may be inflated, a sleeper with a path to outperform expectations, and public traps involving teams good enough to tempt bettors into a bad number. The discussion runs through Akron, Washington State, Bowling Green, UCF, Syracuse, SMU, Houston, Texas, Arizona, Kennesaw State, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan before adding Cincinnati as a bonus under. Each case weighs model projections against schedule strength, returning production, quarterback changes, coaching continuity, transfer portal additions, home-road sequencing and the danger of letting last season's results shape this season's price. The biggest themes include close-game regression, brutal schedules for national brands, continuity versus roster turnover, value hidden in lower-profile programs, and why a team can have an excellent season while still failing to cash an over. The episode closes with the full betting card, a bonus Cincinnati play and a reminder that season-long wagers require patience when September results start creating noise.

Tragically Hip Day in Toronto. 'The Luxury' out of the gate, a tour debut in the encore, and a family of four in seats a text message unlocked.DescriptionAugust 10th, 2016. The Air Canada Centre - the first of three Toronto nights on the Man Machine Poem Tour, and the day Ernie from Denville, New Jersey woke up in his hotel room, flipped on the news, and heard the mayor declare it Tragically Hip Day before he had even gotten out of bed. He had flown up alone for his first-ever Canadian show, eleven club nights deep. The city was already celebrating. Then the lights come up and it is 'The Luxury'. Ernie had waited eleven shows to hear it. Jeff from Vaughan, following this band since 1992, can count the times he has heard it live on one hand. Two songs later comes 'Fiddler's Green', and Scott from Huntsville is looking at grown men crying as far as he can see, understanding exactly how the night is going to go. Third song in. They could do whatever they wanted. The roads in are half the story. Everybody got the same email on the Tuesday morning after the May long weekend - the news of Gord Downie's diagnosis, and a tour nobody knew how to feel about. Scott locked down Kingston hotel rooms before tickets even went on sale, then sweated out the Ticketmaster scramble for four Toronto seats - the morning after watching John Mann and Spirit of the West play a fundraiser at the Horseshoe Tavern, two Canadian heartbreaks stacked onto one walk home. Jeff sent a hockey dad four paragraphs about his life following The Hip, hoping to bring his wife and two kids, and got the answer every fan dreams about: they're yours. Which is how, during 'Fifty-Mission Cap', with Bill Barilko's banner up in the rafters, Jeff came to be filming a verse and then swinging the camera around to catch both his kids singing it back. There is a lot of night in here. 'Nautical Disaster' landing in the first encore as a tour debut (confirmed via setlist.fm, and backed by the notebook Ernie filled out that same evening). The crowd carrying the Toronto line in 'Bobcaygeon', the way Scott remembers it. The “Phantom Power” pair that closed the building down. And then the back half of the conversation jumps ahead to August 20th - Scott behind the stage in Kingston, not breathing until the scanner turned his print-off ticket green, Jeff front row in front of Robby Baker for show number 93, and Ernie back in New Jersey with the Kingston broadcast on the big screen and his son beside him.Somewhere in the middle of it, Scott sums up the entire summer in one sentence: “I've never been so excited for something I didn't want to happen.” So there's that. The panelErnie from Denville, New Jersey - eleven Hip shows in clubs from New York City to Syracuse before this one, his first in Canada and his first in an arena, solo in section 313 and never once feeling alone. His daughter has since become one of The Hip's biggest listeners on Apple Music. He also made a horror movie, We Can't Leave, streaming on Amazon Prime (sequel already in the hopper).Scott from Huntsville - travels to Hip shows with his wife and his oldest concert buddy, and hit Toronto Nights 1 and 3 plus Kingston on the final tour, where his kids texted mid-show to check on him. He chairs the Huntsville Festival of the Arts, a year-round festival bringing Canadian acts to Muskoka - huntsvillefestivalofthearts.com.Jeff from Vaughan - following The Hip since 1992, with Kingston set to be show number 93. He did London, multiple Toronto nights, Hamilton, and Kingston on the final run in a custom “Live Between Us” shirt, and brought his wife and both kids to Toronto Night 1. David Bastedo photographed the four of them in their row and sent it to him after the show.Come say hiThe Gathering in Kingston, August 20th to 23rd - a mixer at the Merchant Pub, Choir! Choir! Choir! in Springer Market Square, a listening party for “The Tragically Hip Live, July 22 - August 20, 2016”, a Long Time Running screening, and a farewell brunch at Morrison's. Email jd@tthpods.com to get on the list.GEDfest Toronto - Saturday, October 17th at the Horseshoe Tavern with Grace, 2, raising money for Campfire Circle and the Murphy Family Fund in Precision Medicine in Pancreatic Cancer. Yes, the same room John Mann played the night before the on-sale. That building keeps showing up. Tickets: facebook.com/GEDfestYYZClosingThanks to Ernie, Scott, and Jeff for bringing August 10th back - the flag, the notebook, the kids checking in on their dads. Send us Fan MailWe made it to episode 300! Thanks for everyone who has been along for the ride. I enjoy talking shop with goalies so much I'd continue to do this even if we had 0 listeners but the fact that some of you love this conversations (and reach out to tell me so) is simply amazing! Here's the episode this week - Ohio State goalie Jack Allen has taken about as unusual a path to D1 lacrosse as it gets — born in Syracuse, developed in Ohio, and then at age 10, moved to England, where men's lacrosse is a niche, blue-collar sport and his best option for reps was playing in a men's league with guys from the local Air Force bases. In this episode, Jack talks about growing up drawn to the goalie position in every sport he played, what he actually looks for when studying goalies on film, and how he digs out of a slump with targeted reps. He opens up about the mental side — the sports psychology resources at Ohio State, the box-breathing reset he uses in the cage, and the French word he picked up on a trip that helps him flush a bad goal.We also cover his recruiting story (the World Championships as his tape, and a lot of unanswered emails), what it means to play "like a rubber band, not a slinky" at 5'9", why up-the-hash shots were his toughest college adjustment, what he's learned practicing next to Casey "Big Tasty" Yamron, and coming off the bench cold against Rutgers.Plus a full gear breakdown — STX Eclipse 3, memory mesh, RZR 2 gloves, and the backwards top string that changed his release.Jack's closing message: lacrosse is the medicine game. Playing off-TV re-join songs leads Gio to recall his time on Dancing with the Stars in Pittsburgh, followed by a caller insisting Primanti Bros. is a must-visit and Gio admitting he hates asking for things over the phone. C-Lo's final update starts with the Yankees defeating the Cardinals in George Lombard Jr.'s MLB debut, C-Mac and Brian Cashman exchanging long-winded Q&As, Mets rookie Nate Lavender detailing his family's travel to Cleveland, Gio declaring Syracuse isn't for him, and John Kruk offering cremation thoughts during Bryce Harper's return to the outfield. After the Moment of the Day on sharing sleep paralysis struggles with your wife, the show wraps with a new report on Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Freddy Peralta, leaving Gio convinced that Lindor and Soto simply don't like each other.
