Defining Your Own Scoreboard

The Level Up Podcast w/ Paul Alex

Success means nothing if you hate the life you built. In this episode of The Level Up Podcast, Paul Alex breaks down why you have to define your own scoreboard instead of chasing society's version of success. Let's be real… A mansion does not mean peace. A luxury car does not mean freedom. A massive revenue number does not mean fulfillment. And if you are building a business just to impress strangers online… You are playing the wrong game. In this episode, you'll learn: Why society's definition of success can leave you empty How vanity metrics create pressure without real peace Why your business should serve your household, not your ego How to define personal success through freedom, family, and alignment The truth is simple: You do not need to win a trophy in a sport you do not even want to play. Your scoreboard should be built around what actually matters to you. Time with your family. Control over your calendar. Peace in your home. Money that supports your life instead of controlling it. When you define your own version of success… The noise gets quieter. The pressure disappears. And the mission becomes clear. Stop chasing applause. Stop measuring yourself against strangers. Build the life that actually feels like freedom. Set your own standard. Protect your inner circle. And keep leveling up. Your Network is your NETWORTH! Coach Kenny Simpson has been on the front lines of leadership longer than most. He's gone 0 and 10. He's coached kids who needed a father figure more than a playbook. And somewhere along the way, he stopped watching the scoreboard — and started winning more than ever. In this episode, Kenny and I dig into what it really takes to build a winning culture, why accountability and love aren't opposites, and how the best leaders develop systems so strong they have answers before problems occur. Kenny also shares the story behind his new book, Iron Valley — a fictional account of a team that lost 27 games in a row and what it took to turn things around. It's part great story, part leadership curriculum, and it's available now on Amazon.

Why do so many people feel financially behind — even when the numbers say they're not? Often, the problem isn't the plan. It's the expectation. Charlie Munger, near the end of his life, gave a one-sentence answer that cuts straight to the point: reasonable expectations. In this conversation, I look at the gap between the life we imagined and the life we're living, and what happens when we never examine where our financial expectations came from in the first place, which may be one of the most underrated financial insights there is. I share the story of a family that had done almost everything right but couldn't shake the feeling of being behind because the scoreboard they were measuring against had been set decades earlier. The action step this week is small but not easy: pick one area where you feel financially behind and ask where that expectation actually came from. Not to fix it. Just to notice it. Because you can't rewrite a story you haven't read yet. Connect with Paul If you're a family with multiple kids who feel like your money should be working harder but aren't sure where to start, I do complimentary 30-minute financial reviews. That's how you do Music City. Then Lynchburg. The Jack Daniel's distillery. Barrel selection with 24 people, the biggest group selection Clint Bailey and Josh Phillips had ever done. Drilling straight into a nine-year-old barrel in a rickhouse, lunch at Miss Mary Bobo's, shopping at the hardware store, and a sunset dinner on the hill with cigars and rocking chairs made from actual barrel wood. Hank Jr., Waylon, Randy Travis, and Don Williams playing softly in the background straight from his friend's guitars. Attention is not the scoreboard I measure success by. I know it looks like progress because it's visible, likes, views, followers, all of that. But attention is just exposure, and exposure does not mean I have position, leverage, or real results. I don't confuse being seen with actually being effective. In this episode, I explain why chasing attention can give you a false sense of progress, and how real value comes from ownership, control, and outcomes, not just visibility. Show Notes: [06:50]#1 Attention measures noise, not consequence. [11:46]#2 Attention is volatile and externally controlled. [18:06]#3 Attention distracts from measurable results. [33:08] Recap Next Steps: --- Execution is not a talent. It is a measurable standard. If your results don't match your ability, you are not lacking information—you are lacking execution reliability. The Execution Reliability Index (ERI) identifies exactly where your discipline breaks, where your standards drop, and where your results are leaking. This is not theory. This is a system. In this episode, Coach breaks down a simple tool called the Summer Scoreboard to make sure your players don't just “show up”… they actually level up. May gets chaotic fast: AAU, jobs, vacations, and shifting schedules. If you don't set your standards and tracking now, you'll be chasing consistency all summer. Effort is not the same as growth. The Summer Scoreboard measures progress, not just attendance. Skill Work Strength + Durability Competition Reps Habits + Leadership 2 skill workouts 2 strength sessions 1 compete day 1 leadership habit Whiteboard in the gym OR shared Google Sheet Names down the left, weeks across the top Quick 2-minute weekly update: what went well + what's next To players: “This summer isn't about hours. It's about progress. We're tracking skill work, strength, competition, and habits. If you want to play more next season, win the summer with work you can prove.” To parents: “We're building structure and accountability. Here's the schedule, what we measure, and how you can support your kid.” End of April is when you set the rules of the summer. If you measure the right things, you won't guess who improved—you'll know. https://teachhoops.com/ Coaching can often feel like being on an island. You are expected to have the answer for every late-game scenario, every player conflict, and every parental concern, often with very little objective feedback. The One-on-One Member Call is designed to break that isolation. It moves the conversation from general "best practices" to specific program solutions. Whether you are struggling to implement a new motion offense or trying to fix a toxic locker room, having a dedicated "Second Set of Eyes" allows you to audit your program in real-time. This isn't just a Q&A; it's a strategic deep dive into the unique DNA of your team. The true value of these calls lies in the Compression of the Learning Curve. Instead of spending three seasons of "trial and error" trying to figure out why your press isn't working, a fifteen-minute focused conversation can identify the technical leak—whether it's your "trapping angles" or your "interceptors' positioning." By sharing your film or your practice plans, you receive Immediate, Actionable Feedback that you can take to the gym the very next day. This level of personalized mentorship is the "Force Multiplier" that helps good coaches become elite leaders. Finally, these calls provide Professional Emotional Support. Every coach faces "The Grind"—those weeks in January where the shots aren't falling and the energy is low. A one-on-one call serves as a "Reset Button," providing a fresh perspective that helps you refocus on your "Process" rather than the "Scoreboard." Use these sessions to "Stress-Test" your ideas before you bring them to your team. When you have a trusted mentor in your corner, you lead with more Poise, Confidence, and Clarity. It's the difference between "guessing" your way through a season and "navigating" it with a proven map. In this second installment of the March basketball series, Molly takes the analogy one step further. Last week was about knowing your playbook — recognizing the patterns behind your drinking. This week is about knowing the scoreboard.Because it's not just about how many drinks you had. It's about what the game is costing you.Molly explores the difference between evaluating a single night of drinking and looking at your overall “season record.” One off night may not define you. But trends over time tell a deeper story. Are you moving toward more peace, more energy, and more self-trust? Or are you stuck in negotiation, anxiety, and subtle disappointment? The episode weaves together personal reflection and neuroscience, breaking down how alcohol impacts GABA, glutamate, cortisol, and dopamine. Molly explains the neurological rebound effect behind 3 a.m. wake-ups, how dopamine drives anticipation and craving, and why repeated drinking can increase baseline stress sensitivity over time. This episode isn't about shame or dramatic declarations. It's about clarity. And clarity gives you the power to adjust your strategy mid-season.In This EpisodeWhy the scoreboard matters more than effortThe difference between a single “game” and your season recordThe hidden costs of drinking beyond obvious consequencesHow alcohol increases GABA — and why that calm feeling doesn't lastThe glutamate and cortisol rebound that fuels 3 a.m. wake-upsHow dopamine drives anticipation and cravingWhy repeated dopamine spikes can make normal life feel “flat”The cumulative impact of stress reactivity over timeThe mental and emotional cost of daily negotiationWhy adjusting your strategy mid-season is a sign of maturity, not failureKey TakeawaysThe scoreboard reflects outcome, not intention.Automatic does not mean inevitable.Alcohol may relieve stress temporarily but increase baseline stress over time.Dopamine fuels anticipation more than pleasure. One bad night is a single game. Trends over time are your season record. You are allowed to adjust your strategy mid-season.This Week's PracticeInstead of only tracking drinks, expand what you observe:How did you sleep?Did you wake up at 3 a.m.?How did your anxiety feel the next day?How much mental space did alcohol take up?Did you follow through on your plan? You are not trying to force change. You are gathering data. And clarity reduces ambivalence.Mentioned in This EpisodeThe neurological rebound effect (GABA and glutamate balance)Dopamine and anticipation conditioningSunnyside mindful drinking app (15-day free trial)Work With MollyIf you're ready to go beyond listening and begin applying these tools with support, you can learn more about working with Molly at:www.mollywatts.comYou can also reach out directly at molly@mollywatts.com to explore what level of support is right for you.Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA:Healthy men under 65:No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week.Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older:No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink.Abstinence from alcoholAbstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past.Benefits of “low-risk” drinkingFollowing these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. Welcome to another completely stable and professionally executed daily comedy show… where one host is preparing for a cruise that may or may not include hostage negotiations, another is heading to Vegas to sit on a radio panel titled “Reports of Our Death Are Greatly Exaggerated” (which feels aggressive), and the rest of us are arguing about hockey and stuffed monkeys.Rafe is setting sail toward Mexico during what the news is lovingly describing as “a tense time,” and naturally we handle it with firearms training jokes, cartel commentary, and Norwegian Cruise Line optimism. Meanwhile, Rizz is headed to Vegas for a radio conference panel alongside a guy flying his own private plane. Rizz? Row 20 on Southwest. Celebrity row, obviously. Fremont-adjacent accommodations. Lifts packed. Confidence medium. We also spiral into Vegas buffet strategy like it's a military operation. Crab legs first. No bread. Absolutely no French toast. If you leave feeling fine, you did it wrong. That's the rule.Back in STL, Moon lived his best cultured life at Phantom of the Opera at The Fabulous Fox Theatre (tears were shed, nuts were purchased), then followed it up with a suite-level experience at a St. Louis City SC match where apparently the buffet alone deserves its own documentary. Meanwhile, Rizz is still emotionally recovering from Canada being “butthurt” about losing Olympic hockey in overtime. Scoreboard is the judge. That's how sports work.We also check in on Punch the abandoned baby monkey who went viral hugging his IKEA orangutan, debate whether AI is the future or the apocalypse, invent a game show called House of Steve, and confirm that yes, Vegas is expensive now and no, the $4.99 steak days are gone forever. This daily comedy show somehow covers cruise chaos, Olympic gold, Broadway tears, casino buffets, monkey redemption arcs, and trivia-night costume strategy in one episode. It's chaotic. It's unnecessary.
