Just as soon as Texas lawmakers wrapped up the regular session, Gov. Greg Abbott surprised some by vetoing a highly contentious bill banning nearly all consumable hemp products and calling lawmakers back to hash it, and other bills, out once more. Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by Sen. Sarah Eckhardt, a Democrat representing Austin, to find out what we can expect from the special session that starts July 21. Plus, Eckhardt shares Austin's biggest legislative wins and losses from the regular session. A quick note: We asked other lawmakers representing Austin at the Texas Capitol for interviews, but only Eckhardt was available. We enjoyed a visit with one of our favorite regulars, Austin State Senator Sarah Eckhardt, to talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly (not necessarily in that order) of the recently-concluded 89th Texas Legislature. There was plenty to lament and plenty to commit to repairing later - but there were also tactical wins for Democrats, and some good legislation passed as well.Learn more about Senator Eckhardt at https://www.saraheckhardt.com/.Thanks for listening! In this episode of The Top Line, Fierce Biotech’s Chris Hayden sat down with Dr. Juergen Eckhardt of Bayer and Dr. Seth Ettenberg of BlueRock Therapeutics to discuss an innovative partnership that’s reshaping how big pharma teams up with biotech startups. BlueRock, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bayer, operates with the independence of a small biotech while benefiting from Bayer’s global reach and infrastructure. The “arm’s-length” model gives BlueRock the agility to innovate while leveraging Bayer’s resources in manufacturing, clinical trials and commercialization. The collaboration has already led to major milestones, including the development of a promising cell therapy for Parkinson’s disease, which is expected to enter Phase 3 trials later this year. “This isn’t just a partnership—it’s a relationship,” Eckhardt said. “We’re combining the best of both worlds: biotech speed and pharma scale.” The episode also explores how Bayer’s experience in biologics manufacturing has helped BlueRock overcome one of regenerative medicine’s biggest challenges—scaling complex cell therapies. The model has proven so effective that Bayer has since replicated it with other companies, signaling a broader shift in how the company approaches innovation. To learn more about this unique partnership and what it means for the future of neurological disease treatment, listen to the full episode of The Top Line.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Once again, Democrats are outnumbered in the Texas Senate, leaving them little to do to fight Republican priorities. It's a winner-take-all session, according to our guest, Sen. Sarah Eckhardt, D-Austin, and things are looking “pretty nasty, brutish, and short.” So, where does she get her encouragement? And, where does she think Democrats can effect change? Eckhardt joins host Nikki DaVaughn to discuss it all, plus how she's seeing Trumpism play out in Austin. This week we have an exciting episode for you as we are recording live from the Capitol office of Senator Sarah Eckhardt. Last week, the Senate passed SB 2, a school voucher bill that would give a $10,000 voucher to students to attend private schools. What is not shocking is that the Senate passed SB 2 so quickly while legislators are usually still in the relationship-building part of the session. They did pass a version of a voucher bill four times in 2023. But, every time it failed in the House, which is where SB 2 now finds itself. So, we are talking today with Sen. Eckhardt about the bill and what Texans of faith can do to help stand up for public schools and oppose this bill—all of this just days after she voiced strong opposition to the bill on the Senate floor. We might even give her a test on the bill, so listen closely and see how she does. The Sound Chaser Progressive Rock Podcast is on the air. The show this time I am calling The Compilation Compilation. That is right, every piece of music on this show is selected from a compilation album. These would be such things as music label samplers, festival concert recordings, multi-artist tributes to bands, and charity-benefit cds. We will sort through compilations of the vinyl and cd eras, identify some of the types of compilation albums, and find a few obscure objets d'art along the way.
