“So what is a drug?” says scholar-essayist Justin Smith-Ruiu in this week's episode of The World in Time. “It's a dry good that is transported and then sold in a particular measurable unit, and until you have those units of measurement and standardization for the purposes of commercial exchange, you don't really have drugs. Of course, you have ayahuasca and fly agaric and whatever else, and you have people, at least going back to the Paleolithic, consuming these. But you don't have the system of commodities that makes drugs a particularly modern phenomenon. And what happens as they are commodified—which you could also describe in the same way as saying what happens as they are transformed into drugs, as ayahuasca, for example, is transformed into a drug—is that they're pulled out of the cultural and ritual context in which they had once made sense, and turned into intoxicants, turned into substances, the purpose of which is to remove you from the burdens of your life.” This week on the podcast, Donovan Hohn revisits the topics of Intoxication (Winter 2012) and Disaster (Spring 2016), speaking first with Justin Smith-Ruiu, author of the forthcoming book On Drugs: Psychedelics, Philosophy, and the Nature of Reality, about the history of drugs and the history of California; about trips, long and strange, good and bad; and about Smith-Ruiu's experiments—in philosophy and literary nonfiction as well as in psychopharmacology. Later in the episode, Hohn speaks with poet Rachel Richardson about California on fire; about the ways technology gives us a distorted, fishbowl view of disasters, natural and otherwise; about the documentary poetics of C. D. Wright; and about the classical Greek poetic form of the cento, two contemporary examples of which Richardson shares from her new collection, Smother.

Topics:Founder Misconceptions About PEFriction Points in Integration Signs a Business Is M&A-Ready...and so much more.Top TakeawaysRoll-ups require a clear playbook or you'll struggle to scale. Justin shares that Agellus Capital targets fragmented, non-discretionary markets and looks for add-ons with high recurring revenue and complementary services. Without clear acquisition criteria, you risk stitching together unrelated businesses with no strategic fit. That leads to operational headaches, zero synergies, and a portfolio that's tough to grow or sell.Integration fails when PE firms underestimate founder attachment. Every founder thinks their playbook is the gold standard, which makes cultural and operational alignment tough. Justin warns that without early investment in rebranding, leadership clarity, and shared values, resentment builds fast and integration risks becoming a post-close drag on value.Want to sell in 12–24 months? Focus on building a business that runs without you. Justin explains that to attract private equity buyers, founders need to nail three critical areas before pursuing M&A: scalable systems, consistent and defensible EBITDA, and a strong leadership team that doesn't rely on the founder. Without these, you're not selling a business—you're selling your job.About Justin SmithJustin Smith is Managing Director and Head of Business Development at Agellus Capital. With 13+ years of experience in private equity, M&A advisory, and investment management, he leads the firm's deal sourcing and relationship-building efforts. In 2025, he was named a “Private Equity BD Professional to Watch” by ACG.About Agellus CapitalAgellus Capital is a lower-middle-market private equity firm focused on essential, non-discretionary services in fragmented industries. The firm targets businesses with $2M–$20M of EBITDA and employs a disciplined buy-and-build strategy. Backed by a $400M debut fund, Agellus is actively scaling platforms across the U.S. through strategic acquisitions.

Questions like “What does this mean?” are central to our encounters with art. “How are these signs connected?” or “how do all symbols fit into an unstated scheme?” are the foundational concerns of aesthetics. Yet, when the same concerns crop up regularly in almost any other part of life, we give a clinical, pathological name: paranoia. These questions were the makings of Paranoia, a symposium held at Verdurin in February 2025. This episode is a recording of a talk by Justin Smith-Ruiu. Justin reflects on how conspiracy-quashing slogans like ‘trust the science' are, in fact, only functional under very specific conditions. The procedures invoked by fact-checkers and disinformation specialists may already be in the first phase of their obsolescence. Justin also touches on his recent dabblings in metafiction – in particular their experimentation with pseudonyms and heteronyms via his publication The Hinternet. This project proposes a way for writers to induce in readers a suspicion that the most basic anchors of a text, like the name of its author, might just be a lie.Justin is a professor of the history and philosophy of science at the Université Paris Cité. He is the author of The Internet Is Not What You Think It Is and Irrationality: A History of the Dark Side of Reason. He has authored monographs on Leibniz and Early Modern Philosophy. He is also a contributor to The New York Times, Harper's, n+1, and The Point.******The Paranoia programme in full.More events at Verdurin.Justin's Irrationality.

Not guilty. That's the verdict delivered by an all-white jury in Tennessee for three former Memphis police officers in the brutal 2023 beating of Tyre Nichols. Nichols, a 29-year-old unarmed Black man, died just days after being kicked, pepper-sprayed and pummeled by officers from a now-disbanded special unit. Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith were all cleared of state charges: second-degree murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping and official misconduct — despite graphic body cam footage and expert testimony labeling their force excessive and unnecessary. His only crime was allegedly fleeing a traffic stop. Civil rights attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci called the acquittal a "devastating miscarriage of justice." The Rev. Al Sharpton, who eulogized Nichols and spoke with his parents after the verdict, blasted the decision and questioned why a jury was brought in from outside Memphis. Learn more about your ad choices. This is the first episode of Eminent Americans where I've had the pleasure of talking to both the subject of a published profile and the profile writer at the same time. Kevin LaTorre, a return guest on the show, recently wrote “The 6,069 Fictions of Justin Smith-Ruiu,” a long piece about philosopher and metafictionist Justin Smith-Ruiu. Or maybe Justin wrote it himself, appropriating Kevin's name and likeness as another one of his authorial alter-egos. Maybe “Kevin” doesn't even exist. I mean, I think he does, since I've talked to him before on zoom, and perused his digital profile, but what if he's just a gifted improviser who was hired by Justin to play Kevin on my podcast? What if the plan all along was to create a real-seeming “Kevin LaTorre” persona, with a fully fleshed out online profile, in order to add yet another layer of semi-unreality to the many layers of the Hinternet, Justin's vast and sprawling endeavor. This seems unlikely, given that “Kevin” and I don't even talk about Justin in our first podcast interview, but who knows? If you're going to create a plausible “Kevin LaTorre” in the world, then you need to have him doing plausibly Kevin LaTorre-esque things, like coming on my podcast to discuss his “faith,” the essayist “Jia Tolentino,” and “climate change.”Anyhoo — such are the questions one begins to ask oneself after one has spent more than a certain amount of time in Justin's world. The conversation, which I really enjoyed, is primarily about Justin and his Hinternet project. We also talk about the challenges that Kevin faced in profiling Justin, Justin's disillusionment with academia, and Justin's scooter accident of a few years ago, which marked a profound break in his life and career. And much, much more.Hinternet posts we discuss include (descriptors and parentheticals from Kevin)* His re-version story* His past audio-mixing history* This metafiction: "The Storyteller"* His case against euthanasia (by far, the most technoskeptic take I've read from him)* His case for pacifism (by far the most dissident-left stance he has, I think -- antiwar in a pro-war Democratic party)* His reflection on his post-2020 developments (where he uses the "old-time religion" of love which sums up plenty about him lately)The show notes, according to ChatGPT:
