Robert Ovetz and Kevin Van Meter, p. 35.  What changes if we begin the history of capitalism not with what capital does to workers, but with what workers force capital to do? This reversal helps set Harry Cleaver's approach to Marxism apart from more traditional accounts of capitalism and labor. In Points of Departure: Refusal of Work and the Crisis of Capitalism, editors Robert Ovetz and Kevin Van Meter bring together Cleaver's writings from several decades, including hard-to-find and previously untranslated work. The first volume in Common Notions' new Class Compositions series presents Cleaver's work not simply as theory, but as a practical way of making sense of everyday struggles from the worker's standpoint. The refusal of work, unwaged labor, class composition, capitalist crisis, and self-valorization take on renewed significance amid contemporary struggles over work and organization. Greek and Turkish translations are also in the works. Listeners may know Cleaver from his landmark 1979 book Reading Capital Politically. For more than five decades, he has helped develop what became known as autonomist Marxism, an approach that places working-class self-activity at the center of its analysis. In this interview Ovetz and Van Meter discuss the traditions from which his work emerged, and what they hope a new generation of readers might do with it in their search for alternatives.  Although more conventional accounts of political economy often begin with companies restructuring workplaces, introducing new technologies, moving investment, or tightening workplace discipline. Cleaver instead, turns the perspective around by asking what forms of worker resistance may have compelled capital to make those changes in the first place. That reversal in turn raises questions the editors grapple with, such as: How do everyday acts of resistance become collective power? How can we demonstrate that corporate restructuring is actually a response to worker resistance, and what might other approaches add to or supplement Cleaver's inversion of class perspective? And when workers create organizations of their own, how can those institutions preserve autonomy without hardening into less responsive bureaucracies? Drawing on concepts like workers' inquiry, workplace cooperation, self-valorization, cooperatives, as well as the significance of Zapatistas, we consider what it means to move beyond refusing existing forms of work toward creating new forms of collective life. It's one of the best-documented cryptid cases in America, and it deserves the whole hour.But the Visitor is the freak case. We dig into the Lockridge Monster and the partially eaten turkeys that started it, the Skunk River Wildmen, a 13-year-old boy who watched one drink from the river with cupped hands, a turkey hunter who locked eyes with something in the morning fog, a bow hunter with 5 separate run-ins on his own land, a viral photo out of White Water Canyon, and a string of encounters from people who never told a soul, the mushroom hunters and the night fisherman and the farmer with a clump of coarse dark hair in his kitchen drawer.Then we take the long way home through the rest of Iowa's strange country, the cursed Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery, the Fort Dodge house whose builders invited the dead in on purpose, and the phantom cougars the state swears are gone and people keep right on seeing. And really, it's this whole idea of how, when a patient's going through their care event, how are you tracking them from when they access care all the way through documenting their care to coding the care they received and then getting a bill out to an insurance company or to a patient to get reimbursed for the care they received. And so the transformation has been going on for a long time."   "The cost has been pretty well identified over the years. From a cost perspective, the goal is to perform all of this work as cost-effectively as possible, and faster is better for patients and for hospitals in terms of processing accounts, cash flow, and other financial metrics. In 1903, the quiet coal town of Van Meter, Iowa was shaken by a terrifying series of sightings that would become one of the strangest cryptid encounters in American folklore. It started with a beam of light — not from the sky, but from a glowing horn attached to a massive, winged creature. Then came the sulfuric stench, the shrieks in the night, and the bullets that didn't work. For five nights, the townspeople watched in fear as a mysterious beast (or two?) soared through the skies, undeterred by shotgun blasts and town patrols. This is the legend of the Van Meter Visitor, a creature described as part-gargoyle, part-dragon, part-unicorn, and 100% nightmare fuel that the entire town tried — and failed — to take down. Plus, we'll cover modern-day sightings, a plaster footprint, psychological and paranormal theories, and a festival held each year to commemorate this mysterious visitor.
