There's a theme that echoes through Dan Lanning's program at Oregon in 2025: Double Down. But for the defending regular season Big Ten champs and one of the nation's top teams “Doubling Down” is not just about repeating as Champs or getting to the College Football Playoff, it's about daily growth.Dan Lanning is the latest conversation on THE PROCESS, a limited series within Y-Option, fueled by our founding sponsor, 76® - keeping you on the GO GO GO so you never miss a beat. In a detailed conversation with Rhett Lewis and myself, the Ducks head coach opened up about being exposed to the GOAT of Process, Nick Saban, and how that has impacted his life and the core DNA Traits of his program. After a statement win on the road at Penn State two weeks ago, Lanning didn't allow the emotions of an epic White Out win to linger. “Every one of our players has an improvement plan,” he told us. “One thing they must get better at.” And that goes for every unit, every coach, every staff member. That kind of clarity doesn't come from chasing results. It comes from the process that Lanning learned years ago at Alabama and Georgia which began with a simple phrase: evaluate everything. The good calls, the bad ones, the moments that worked out for the wrong reasons. As he put it, “Good process, bad result–that can happen. Bad process, good result–that can happen too.” Regardless of result, his knows he and his staff still have to fix it.And then he took it further and shared something with Rhett and I that we have never heard from a football coach. He has his players self-reflect each week. Not just verbally, but he has them write it down. And not just what worked, but what didn't and how they'll respond. Coach Lanning reads each players essay and their words give him a window into their self-awareness, and that's where real growth starts. When Coach Lanning spoke about self-awareness for his players, it landed. Because that word sits at the center of his life too. The man who once drove from Kansas City to Pittsburgh just to chase a coaching job now balances the same fire at Oregon with grounded perspective. His wife's battle with cancer reshaped how he sees the world. “There is no balance in this profession,” he admitted. But when he gets a moment to have dinner with his wife or watch his son's football game–Coach Lanning is all in.In a sport where everyone's watching the scoreboard, Dan Lanning is focused on the present while building a culture that values honesty over hype, process over panic, and connection over control. And if you walk into his locker room, he says, you'll see that the rest of the world could learn from the young men in it.That's The Process. That's Growth. And it's working in Eugene. For past episodes of THE PROCESS be sure to check out Peyton Manning, Chris Fowler and Mark Jackson as their process as professionals, husbands and fathers may impact your life.Much love and stay steadyYogiY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Buckle up for the Hardcore Penn State Football Podcast as we unpack the gut-wrenching 30-24 double-overtime loss to No. 6 Oregon in Week 6's White Out thriller at Beaver Stadium! In front of a shattering 111,015 fans clad in white, the Nittany Lions (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) fought valiantly in a rematch of last year's Big Ten Championship but couldn't overcome offensive woes, a toothless defense, and another signature defeat for James Franklin. Oregon (5-0, 2-0) extends its regular-season Big Ten win streak to 12, but PSU's playoff dreams took a hit. We're dissecting the film, the what-ifs, and the path forward—because even in defeat, We Are! Drew Allar's rollercoaster season hit a devastating low in the White Out spotlight, completing just 18-of-35 passes for 212 yards, 2 TDs, and one crushing interception—a game-sealing pick on his first throw of the second overtime that handed Oregon the win. The senior flashed poise with a 42-yard bomb to Devonte Ross and a clutch two-minute drill to tie it late, but his streaky arm (underthrows to Trebor Peña, forced throws into double coverage) and footwork issues under pressure from Oregon's front seven led to a season-low 51% completion rate. After 722 yards and 7 TDs through three games, Allar's boom-or-bust pattern is now a glaring concern—can he lock in before Ohio State, or is this the regression we feared? Penn State's vaunted defense, which suffocated Nevada, FIU, and Villanova, was shockingly passive against Oregon's tempo offense, mustering only one tackle for loss while allowing 428 total yards and 5.2 yards per carry. The unit bent but rarely broke—holding the Ducks to 3-of-12 on third downs but lacked the disruptive edge from Zuriah Fisher (just 2 tackles) and Tony Rojas (8 stops but no splash plays). In double OT, Oregon's explosive runs and Dante Moore's poise exposed coverage lapses, leading to back-to-back TDs. Under DC Jim Knowles, this was a wake-up call: Where was the swarm we saw in the shutouts? James Franklin's 4-12 lifetime record against top-10 foes (now 4-13 after this gut-punch) looms larger than ever, as Oregon blew a 17-10 fourth-quarter lead and but PSU couldn't close in OT despite a roaring White Out crowd that forced two false starts on the Ducks. Franklin's conservative calls—settling for Ryan Barker's career-long 49-yarder early and punting on 4th-and-2—drew post-game heat, and his teams' 1-5 mark in OT games since 2014 feels cursed. Despite a gritty comeback capped by Kaytron Allen's 4-yard OT TD run (he and Nicholas Singleton combined for 142 rushing yards), Franklin admitted the execution fell short. With a loaded schedule ahead, can he finally exorcise these October demons and salvage a playoff run? Hats off to Oregon's dynamic duo—head coach Dan Lanning schemed a masterpiece, bottling PSU's run game (3.8 yards per carry) with aggressive blitzes and tempo shifts that neutralized the Lions' O-line. Transfer QB Dante Moore was unflappable in the cauldron, going 22-of-30 for 285 yards and 3 TDs (including a 25-yard OT dagger to Gary Bryant Jr. and an 8-yarder to Dierre Hill Jr.), while adding 42 rushing yards to cap a 54-point-per-game Ducks offense. Lanning's staff turned the White Out into a house of horrors for Penn State, proving Oregon is the Big Ten's new alpha and a legit national title contender. Respect earned—now how does PSU respond? The loss drops PSU to No. 7 in the AP Poll, but with winnable games against UCLA and Northwestern next, there's time to climb back into playoff contention. We're analyzing the offensive line, debating Allar's benching buzz, and previewing how the D-line can rediscover its edge. The Backcourt Starts at 1:00 Out: Tre Donaldson, In: Elliot Cadeau, who is a much better creator, and that's what this team needs. Cadeau and the general UNC'ness of North Carolina are hard to separate but he was a five-star who plays hot and should benefit from not having to fight for usage with RJ Davis. Defensively his size puts a cap on what he can do but he gets after it: more Xavier Simpson than Eli Brooks. LJ Cason is the backup point, we guess, though he may defer to Gayle as the on-ball player in those sets just because Cason is more of an off-ball threat than Roddy. Cason was a three-star because he was coming in unready, but could take that huge jump. This year is the freshman Jordan Poole year, not the sophomore Jordan Poole year, IE frustratingly forgivable. Gayle isn't going to shoot 9% in the Big Ten again, but he's what he is at this point: a guy who can get to the rim and create fouls/hit his free throws. We kinda want him coming off the bench since he can fill in for a lot of what any given starter leaves, but isn't a great fit with the other projected starting four. The other wild card is their new five-star. Trey McKenney lost 20 pounds in the offseason so he might not as much of a burly 2/3 as he seemed at OLSM. He's still Gayle at this point in his career, though with some big point upside. Not a one-and-done but should be ready by Tournament time. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Hot Takes, Wings and Frontcourt Starts at 32:15 Starting at the three again will be Nimari Burnett, who is Nimari: a usage soak who is there to end good possessions not start them. He began to show a bit of creation late last season but that only got him from 90% points assisted to 84%. He is very good at what he does, and unlikely to do more. His backups are extra guards, and Winters Grady, who should be Just a Shooter at this stage, and more down the road. Oscar Goodman arrived midseason last year, but he's supposed to need another year of development. Patrick Liburd is the kind of guy we wish was 2 years older right now. At the four is Yaxel Lendeborg, the #1 player in the portal, who is going to be a cross between Danny Wolf and Johni Broome, though not better than either of them. He is very strong and impossible to stop once he has you off your feet, but he's coming from an offense where he had to be the alpha creator every play and he's better as the second option. Can he guard up to three? Probably in the Big Ten; there was some distance at the Combine between him and Wolf in the agility drills, but Yaxel came out like Johni: agile enough to be among the who can play the four in the NBA. Backup to Yax is Will Tschetter, the rarest bird in college basketball these days as a five-year player who stuck around despite the likelihood of less playing time than last year. They were working on making him a shooter on the move. He has to be hidden away defensively, but this lineup has plenty of defenders to do that. Frontcourt is two guys instead of 1.5 now. We are obsessed with the upside of Aday Mara, who is 7'3" with impossible length. He would have had the highest block rate in the country by some distance if he played enough to qualify; he didn't because he got sick (Mono?) but when he returned they had him playing 21 mpg and UCLA got much, much better. Then he got benched. Sometimes he plays soft—was that a sick thing, a Cronin thing? He's also got a soft touch and a good feel for passing. May be as good as Yaxel if he hits his ceiling. Mara's platoonmate, and the probable "starter," is Morez Johnson from Illinois, a crazy rebounder with great ups and shot-blocking ability. Offensively he's a finisher. Defensively there's some hope he can be switchable. Going to make it very hard to go inside and give Michigan an edge from the five that they haven't had since...? 3. How It All Fits Starts at 1:11:34 Can they play the bigs together? Matt D says the NBA is going back to three forwards, and Michigan's best attribute is they're Old North Carolina, where they're just going to out-size everybody. That's doable if they can get Mara to be the player we think he could be, since he can create and so can Yaxel, and you can get away with blow-bys when you have a guy like Mara who blocks shots without leaving the floor. Speaking of floor, this team at worst looks like a four-seed, with considerable upside if a) Mara can play more and maintain his numbers, b) Cadeau cuts down on turnovers, c) Gayle finds his shooting, d) Cason blows up, or e) McKenney blows up. Think they can cut down on turnovers from last year because Wolf just had a bunch that were unforced, and because instead of forcing everything to the rim they can shoot bad twos and rebound them. They also just have more room to pass to. 4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 2:02:19 Oregon 30, Penn State 24 Penn State could do nothing on offense until the 4th Q when they had went on an Oregon-is-exhausted march, then hit a great PA shot. The INT that ended it was that pyramid formation Lanning loves. Frames punted from the plus-36. Ohio State 24, Washington 6 Went about how you might expect a team whose OL/DL are their issues would go against OSU, IE they got six points out of three red zone trips and then it was 17-6 in the 4th Q and they had to go for it on 4th down. OSU did a great job containing the QB run. Indiana 20, Iowa 15 I know that touchdown; that's the Anthony Carter play! Iowa had chances to win this but lost their QB near the end and also went Cover Zero one too many times. USC 32, Illinois 34 This felt like two good teams going at it, though USC was short on guys in the secondary and played bend-don't-break until they either broke or Illinois pulled out a Philly Special. Coulda been a blowout but Illinois fumbled in the endzone twice. Minnesota 31, Rutgers 28 Rutgers hits their program high when they have to play a Big Ten West schedule. Good solid quarterbacking until Athan Kaliakmanis had to face pressure, which is like Pedro Serrano trying to hit a curve. Northwestern 17, UCLA 14 Down 17-0 to Northwestern was probably UCLA's best shot at winning a Big Ten game this year. Welcome back to the Hardcore Penn State Football Podcast for our ultimate hype show ahead of No. 3 Penn State's electric White Out clash with No. 6 Oregon on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC's Big Ten Saturday Night! Fresh off a 3-0 start with blowouts over Nevada (46-11), FIU (34-0), and Villanova (52-6), the Nittany Lions head into this rematch of last year's Big Ten Championship (which PSU won 28-24) as slight favorites in a game that could catapult them to No. 1. Beaver Stadium will transform into a sea of white under the lights, with over 108,000 fans creating college football's most intimidating atmosphere. We're breaking down keys to victory, special guest insights, and why this is must-win for James Franklin's squad. It's back where it belongs—primetime against a top-10 powerhouse! The 2025 White Out, turns West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium into a deafening whiteout spectacle. PSU is 13-8 all-time in White Outs, including six straight wins since 2019, and Oregon's players have already called it a "bucket-list game." Expect fireworks, synchronized chants, and a crowd that rattles even the most seasoned Ducks. This isn't just a game; it's a statement to reclaim Big Ten dominance after Oregon's 13-1 campaign last year. We're thrilled to welcome Dale Bliss, Autzen Zoo writer, for an in-depth chat on this matchup! Bliss provides a behind enemy lines look at the Oregon Ducks, who won their rivalry game last week with ease. Forget the hype—victory comes down to the trenches in this heavyweight slugfest. Penn State's elite D-line, led by Dani Dennis-Sutton (4 sacks, 3 forced fumbles) and a disruptive Zane Durant, must neutralize Oregon's explosive offense, which has averaged 54 points per game while crushing foes 162-30 to start 4-0. On the flip side, PSU's O-line faces Lanning's aggressive front—can they avoid the missed assignments that plagued early drives and give Allar clean pockets? Drew Allar vs. Oregon's secondary: will they let him run the ball? PSU's secondary vs. Ducks QB Dante Moore. Special teams shoutout: Gabe Nwosu's leg and Ryan Barker's boot could flip field position in a close one. With both teams unbeaten, a Lions W vaults them to No. 1 and sets up a monster Ohio State rematch.
