Marion Jones was once celebrated for her athletic achievements and known as the ‘fastest woman on the planet', and quickly became a household name in the early 2000s, appearing on the covers of Time Magazine, Vogue–as the first black female athlete to ever grace the cover, and Sports Illustrated and securing millions in endorsement deals from major brands including Nike, Gatorade, and “Got Milk”. Though she never tested positive in any drug test, in 2007 Marion eventually confessed that she had lied about taking Performance Enhancing Drugs and was subsequently sentenced to six-months in jail. As a result, she voluntarily chose to return her medals, taking full responsibility for her actions and apologizing to her fans around the world. Since then, Marion has completely reinvented herself and transformed her life. Today, Marion and I dive into it all. Today on the show we discuss: how Marion views her career as an Olympic athlete, the darkest moment of her life, why she believes taking performance enhancing drugs didn't give her that much of an edge, how she has reframed the way she views success, what it was like competing again after nearly two decades, how Marion has turned her mess into her message and much more. ⚠ WELLNESS DISCLAIMER ⚠ Please be advised; the topics related to health and mental health in my content are for informational, discussion, and entertainment purposes only. Tune in for a compelling conversation between Mallory and Tam Powell, Senior Vice President of Higher Education at BVK, recorded live at the AMA conference. Tam shares insights into the challenges surrounding higher education's national narrative and the innovative campaign she is spearheading to shift perceptions and reinforce the collective impact of higher education. Dive into this episode for actionable insights on how a unified message can reshape public opinion and support enrollment strategies.Key TakeawaysAI in higher education is a key topic, with professionals exploring its integration and implications.Negative public perceptions about the value of higher education persist, posing challenges to enrollment.BVK's campaign, Proud Sponsor of College, aims to redefine the narrative around higher education's societal impact. The campaign highlights the collective benefits of higher education, from innovation to a skilled workforce, democratic engagement, and national security. The initiative is designed to reach general audiences with a unified message, targeting public awareness over direct student recruitment.Success will be measured by shifts in public sentiment and indirect enrollment improvements, as tracked through Gallup polls and other metrics. What Key Themes Emerged at AMA? During the AMA conference, AI and the perception of higher education were dominant themes. Tam noted widespread interest in incorporating AI responsibly and a shared concern about the persistent negative narrative around higher education. With fewer freshmen entering campuses and a looming demographic cliff, these discussions are increasingly urgent for higher ed professionals.Tam emphasized that the national dialogue around higher education has shifted away from its long-term societal contributions. This episode delves into why reshaping this perception is critical for the sector's survival and growth. How Does BVK Plan to Change the Narrative? BVK, alongside Serve Marketing and Bowstring Studios, is developing a nationwide public service campaign called Proud Sponsor of College. The initiative seeks to highlight the broader societal benefits of higher education, moving beyond individual economic outcomes. Tam explained that the campaign will spotlight six key themes:Economic prosperity fueled by innovation from higher education.A skilled workforce driving industry and business growth.Educated citizens contributing to democracy and civil discourse.Improved collective health, happiness, and well-being.Expanded opportunities central to the American Dream.A strong military and national security enabled by higher education. These narratives will be disseminated through TV spots, digital ads, print materials, and partnerships with socially responsible organizations. The ultimate goal? To foster a unified message that can act as a catalyst for positive change. How Will Success Be Measured? Tam explained that the campaign will monitor public sentiment using Gallup polls and other national indicators, with an eye on reversing the declining confidence in higher education. While the initiative does not directly target prospective students, BVK anticipates that this shift in public perception will support universities' recruitment efforts.Tam likened the campaign to the Got Milk? campaign for higher education, aiming to spark national recognition and foster pride in the sector's impact. - - - -Connect With Our Co-Hosts:Mallory Willsea https://www.linkedin.com/in/mallorywillsea/https://twitter.com/mallorywillseaSeth Odell https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethodell/https://twitter.com/sethodellAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:The Higher Ed Pulse is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. Food is a source of nourishment, joy and autonomy for a lot of people – but in her new book, Ruin their Crops on the Ground, Andrea Freeman also tracks how the U.S. government has used food policy as a form of control and oppression. In today's episode, Freeman speaks with NPR's Ayesha Rascoe about how the book's title can be traced back to an order given by George Washington to destroy the food source of Indigenous nations, and how from slavery to Got Milk? campaigns to school lunches today, there's often a bigger political agenda behind nutrition education. Big Dairy's impact on health and policy is udderly shocking. Michael Regilio milks the truth from this cash cow of an industry on Skeptical Sunday! Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we're joined by skeptic, comedian, and podcaster Michael Regilio! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Milk consumption by adults has not been natural for most of human history. About 65% of the global population has reduced ability to digest lactose, with some populations experiencing nearly 100% lactose intolerance. The dairy industry, with government support, has heavily promoted milk consumption despite questionable health benefits. This includes school milk programs and marketing campaigns like "Got Milk?" Raw milk can be dangerous, potentially causing diseases like typhoid and tuberculosis. Pasteurization made milk safer, but the dairy industry initially resisted it. The US government has repeatedly subsidized and bailed out the dairy industry, including buying surplus milk and cheese. This has led to an artificial inflation of the dairy market. Good news for the lactose averse: there are many alternative sources for the nutrients found in milk. People can obtain calcium from foods like almonds, figs, kale, tofu, and sweet potatoes. By exploring these options, people can make informed dietary choices that align with their health needs and preferences. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Elina Vilk has been the Chief Marketing Officer at Hootsuite since August 2023. The National School Lunch Program has been in operation for decades, serving tens of millions of school-aged kids cow's milk with their lunches. But it turns out, there's more supply than demand: According to USDA findings in 2019, students threw away about 41 percent of the milk served in schools. So why do schools keep serving it? Today on The Weeds: Why the US government loves milk. Submit your policy questions! We want to know what you're curious about. She boasts extensive experience as a food and prop stylist, with a vast array of clients. Her journey began as a young ballet dancer and was a creative child who eventually landed a career as a dental hygienist—a role she continues to fulfill today. Jody delves into her interpretation of beautification, which Tommy links to her involvement withvisual, performing arts, and design. As longtime member of Aging but Dangerous Women, “a movement focused on healthy aging and living dangerously through fun, spirit and style”, she was a part of a select group ranging in age from 50-80, who modeled for large charity events. Her career in the film industry included various positions on feature films, cable television shows, commercials, high end corporate videos, catalogue and print media advertising. After being hired as a food stylist for an informercial for Ron Popiel's Rotisserie 2000, Jody narrowed her scope of work to food and prop styling. For several months in 2006, she worked as an in-house producer for Andrew Zimmern, coordinating with his radio show and television segment producers, and doing research in support of his columns and written publications. She shares insights into the techniques and props employed in food photography, such as those seen in the "Got Milk"; campaign where yogurt was used. Questions arise about the financial prospects, competitiveness, and outlook of this profession.Jody's contributions extend beyond her career, as she served for many years on theboard of Minnesota Women in Film & Television and being involved with Women WhoReally Cook, an organization of professional women in the food industry. Additionally, she indulges in a side venture of repurposing and designing vintage jewelry, offering opportunities for connection. Our conversation concludes with a glimpse into her future aspirations.JODY LICHTOR LINKS:Website: https://www.jodylichtor.com/Email Jody: jodylichtor@gmail.comBefore the Lights Links:RATE & REVIEW THE SHOW! 5 STAR & NICE COMMENTS PLEASE!Become a BTL Member: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/supportBefore the Lights Website: https://www.beforethelightspod.com/Get Tommy a Glass of Vino: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/beforethelightsSupport the Show.Follow the show on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beforethelightspodcast/Follow the show on Face Book: https://www.facebook.com/beforethelightspodcast/Follow the show on Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@beforethelightspodcast?lang=enFollow Tommy on Face Book: https://www.facebook.com/tcanale3Rate & Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/before-the-lights/id1501245041Email the host: beforethelightspod@gmail.com
