As the wine world stumbles through difficult times (in early 2026), Karen MacNeil, author of The Wine Bible and co-founder of Come Over October, believes part of the disconnect stems from time. The fastness of the modern, social media fueled world and the slowness of wine. Her solution is to focus the narrative of wine with well-being and wine's long-standing role as a beverage that brings people together. Detailed Show Notes: Karen's background: author of The Wine Bible, writer, speaker, teacherWorried that a change in culture, to a faster one with social media (took off in 2012 when Facebook hit 1B active users and >50% of the population had smart phones), has left wine, a slower product, behindWhite wine's appeal may be partly that it implies fastnessWine is slower to create (can take 3-5 years) and to consume (high acid, tannins for reds)Larger selection of beverages may also be competing for wine's share, including functional beverages that are marketed as “mindful”Wrote an article, “Is wine really in the alcohol business?” on how wine is more than alcohol, but threaded in the culture of food, history, religion, and artBelieves wine should promote the notion of wellbeing vs health, which includes better relationships from sharing wine with peopleStarted Come Over October w/ Gino Colangelo and Kimberly Charles, PR professionals2025: reached 2.9B media impressions, had 1,400 retail store promotions, raised $250kSister campaign is Share and Pair Sundays - to go beyond October, involve food, and help engage more restaurantsAll campaigns need a time, a reason, and a behaviorSeneca Lake Wine Trail doing Share and Pair SundaysTexas Wine Country doing “Come Over October Y'all”Most impactful event was an interview with Pink and sports figures, showing wine connects people across industriesThe wine industry will need to invest to get more people involved, the “Got Milk” campaign spent $23M in the first year Hosted on Acast. Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com #The brotherhood manifesto #TripleCsurvivor Here are 5 of the all-time greatest commercial catchphrases (often called slogans or taglines). These have endured for decades due to their simplicity, cultural penetration, and ability to stick in people's minds—frequently ranking at the top of advertising historians' and critics' lists for impact and memorability. "Just Do It" (Nike, 1988) This three-word imperative became a global motivational mantra, transcending sports to symbolize action, determination, and personal achievement. It's widely regarded as one of the most influential slogans ever created. "A Diamond Is Forever" (De Beers, 1948) Often cited as the single most recognized slogan of the 20th century, this phrase transformed diamonds into the ultimate symbol of eternal love and commitment, profoundly shaping the engagement ring market for generations. "Got Milk?" (California Milk Processor Board, 1993) The simple, direct question (often paired with celebrity milk-mustache ads) boosted milk consumption awareness and spawned countless parodies and imitations, proving how effective a minimalist approach can be. "Where's the Beef?" (Wendy's, 1984) Delivered by feisty octogenarian Clara Peller in TV commercials, this catchphrase exploded into pop culture, becoming shorthand for questioning substance or value. It turned a fast-food ad into a national phenomenon. "Think Different" (Apple, 1997) This grammatically bold slogan (intentionally avoiding "differently") celebrated innovation and non-conformity, perfectly aligning with Apple's brand during its resurgence and inspiring creative What was Jesus catch phrase? Here are 5 of the most iconic and enduring "catchphrases" from the life and teachings of Jesus, drawn from the Gospels. These short, memorable statements have shaped ethics, culture, and language for centuries—much like modern advertising slogans, they distill profound ideas into punchy, repeatable forms that people still quote today. "Do to others what you would have them do to you." (Matthew 7:12; also Luke 6:31) Known worldwide as the Golden Rule, this positive command summarizes ethical living and appears in various forms across cultures, but Jesus framed it as the essence of the law and prophets. It's a timeless call to empathy and proactive kindness. "Love your neighbor as yourself." (Mark 12:31; part of the Greatest Commandment with loving God) Jesus elevated this as one of the two core commandments on which "all the Law and the Prophets hang." It challenges self-centeredness and has influenced moral philosophy, social justice movements, and everyday ethics for 2,000 years. "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) This bold "I Am" declaration defines Jesus' exclusive role in salvation and relationship with God. It's one of his most direct and theologically central statements, often cited in discussions of faith and exclusivity. "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." (Matthew 5:44) Part of the Sermon on the Mount, this radical reversal of "eye for an eye" thinking promotes forgiveness and non-retaliation. It has inspired figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and remains a challenging ideal in a world of conflict. "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me." (John 14:1) Spoken in the context of his impending death, this offers comfort and assurance amid anxiety. It's a concise message of peace through faith that resonates in times of trouble. These phrases stand out for their brevity, depth, and cultural staying power—many have entered everyday speech (e.g., "turn the other cheek" or "judge not" come from similar teachings). Honorable mentions include "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find" (Matthew 7:7) and "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26). Which of these resonates most with you, or do you have a favorite saying from Jesus' teachings?856msFast What is your catch phrase?

In this unforgettable episode of The Box of Oddities, JG and Kat swing wildly from accidental lizard rescues to one of the most astonishing near-death survival stories in medical history. First, Kat confesses a very unexpected moral crisis involving her patio plants, gnat traps, and several surprisingly curious lizards. Then the pair shift into the gripping true account of radiologist Anna Bågenholm, the Norwegian skier who survived being trapped under the ice for 80 minutes without a heartbeat—and lived to tell the story. Through a cinematic retelling backed by medical reports and firsthand accounts, JG explores how Anna slipped into a freezing mountain stream, found a tiny air pocket, remained conscious for 40 minutes, and later entered deep hypothermic cardiac arrest with a body temperature of 56.7°F… only to be revived hours later by a medical team who refused to give up. Her strange sensations, out-of-body perspective, and quiet detachment blur the line between physiology and the extraordinary. Then it's Kat's turn with a delightfully bizarre deep-dive into America's government cheese caves—the multi-million-pound dairy stockpile the U.S. accidentally created, stored in massive underground limestone caverns, and quietly funneled into fast-food menus through a network of embedded “dairy scientists.” From the Reagan-era giveaways to the cheesy innovations of Taco Bell and Domino's, learn how policy, politics, and processed cheddar shaped American eating habits. Plus: hidden Beatles audio Easter eggs, mysterious backward messages, and the conspiracies that still won't die. If you love true survival stories, strange government programs, and the gloriously weird overlaps of science, history, and pop culture, this episode hits every craving. This Box Contains The Following Ingredients: Anna Bågenholm, near-death experience, hypothermia survival, trapped under ice, government cheese caves, SubTropolis, Missouri, dairy surplus history, Got Milk campaign, Taco Bell cheese innovations, Beatles backward messages, Paul is dead conspiracy, weird history podcast, Box of Oddities. The hivemind finally draws a boundary — and Carol crosses every one of them. In Pluribus Episode 5 (“Got Milk”), Carol's actions finally catch up with her, and the Others ghost her… emotionally and literally. But the more space they give her, the deeper her paranoia — and her discoveries — go.Brandon & Chanel break it all down:The Others cut ties with Carol — and send her voicemail ghostings and drone deliveriesZosia is still in recovery… until Carol drugs her again (you read that right)Carol's loneliness spirals into grief, anger, and a manic need for controlThe wolves are back — and this time, they go after Helen's grave
Pluribus just leveled up hard with episodes 4 ("Please, Carol") and 5 ("Got Milk"). Episode 4 pulls Carol deeper into morally questionable territory when she drugs Zosia with truth serum to extract intel on reversing the Joining. The Joined can't lie, so Carol exploits that vulnerability without hesitation. It's ruthless, clever, and leaves Zosia collapsing at the end in a gut punch of a cliffhanger. Then episode 5 isolates Carol completely. The Joined abandon her in Albuquerque, leaving her utterly alone in a city buzzing with invisible hivemind chatter. Her investigation into the strange milk substance spirals into full detective mode, and the final reveal under that tarp is one of the creepiest moments of the season.Vince Gilligan keeps tightening the screws, and Rhea Seehorn is crushing it as Carol navigates loneliness, paranoia, and ethical free fall. The atmosphere is suffocating in the best way, and every episode raises more questions than it answers. What did Carol see? What is the milk really for? Drop your theories below and subscribe for breakdowns as the finale approaches!

In this episode of Documentary First, host Christian Taylor welcomes back Emmy-nominated director and producer Nicholas (Nick) Bruckman for his third visit to the show. Together, they pull back the curtain on the real world of documentary filmmaking—from getting into top festivals like Sundance and Tribeca, to navigating labs and markets, to landing a doc on Netflix.Nick shares how his early narrative feature Valley of Saints got into Sundance off a “cold” submission, and how he's since used programs like Gotham Week, Film Independent's labs, and Tribeca's Creators Market to build meaningful relationships with programmers and industry partners. He breaks down his rough-cut screening process (including Google forms and phone-watching “tells”) and explains why being radically open to feedback is one of the most powerful tools a filmmaker has.Christian and Nick also dive into Minted: The Rise and Fall of the NFT, exploring why that film became Netflix's “definitive” NFT documentary—and what that reveals about marketplace demands, cultural buzz, and why some critically acclaimed films (Not Going Quietly) still don't land on major streamers. The conversation then turns to Nick's latest four-part docuseries, The Price of Milk, which premiered at Tribeca. Christian shares her strong personal reaction to the series, especially its portrayal of small family dairy farmers and the government “checkoff” program that was supposed to support them. Nick unpacks the hidden story behind the “Got Milk?” campaign, how money flows from farmers to industry groups, and why transparency, policy, and political engagement matter more than simply switching what's in your grocery cart. Finally, Nick reveals how Oatly helped fund The Price of Milk while still allowing full editorial independence—and offers practical advice for filmmakers on working with brands, nonprofits, and mission-aligned partners to get ambitious projects made and seen. He closes with a DocuView Déjà Vu recommendation: Secret Mall Apartment, a doc that not only tells a wild story but also models what's possible with clever, independent distribution outside traditional gatekeepers. On this episode of the podcast we built the perfect 90s trip to the movies in our This or That segment, revisited the glory days of the Nextel chirp phone, and chose between our childhood role models Bob Ross, LeVar Burton, and Mr. Rogers. We celebrated the iconic duo of ham and cheese Hot Pockets and the original PlayStation, dug into the memory banks for the forgotten fruity drink Burple and its wild accordion-style container, and talked Stone Cold Steve Austin's legendary Got Milk! ad. We remembered the Choco Taco, had a blast with the new Super Retro Hotline, enjoyed a fantastic mailbag, officially debuted the Walkbuster Movie Club with The 'Burbs, hit Tuck's Music Corner, and packed in a ton more nostalgia.Merch link: https://superretropod.com/product-category/sub-shop/⸻Today's episode was brought to you by Salty Water. In this episode, Mark sits down with Corey Scott, CEO of Midwest Dairy, for an insightful look at what it means to lead intentionally in one of agriculture's most people-focused industries. Corey shares what it takes to manage a team spread across 10 states, steward millions in checkoff dollars, and stay grounded in purpose while navigating the complexities of consumer trends, farmer expectations, and the future of dairy. They dive deep into leadership, stewardship, and the power of clarity—plus a few laughs about protein, heavy cream, and “fancy cheese.”Key TakeawaysIntentional Leadership Starts with Showing UpCorey defines being intentional as showing up every day, even when it's not easy or convenient. How you show up impacts the people watching you—whether family, employees, or your broader community.Purpose is the North StarIn a complex industry like dairy, where every producer has unique values and opinions, Corey keeps her team focused on one question: Are we reaching the consumer effectively? That clarity cuts through the noise and keeps her organization aligned.Stewardship Over SalesUnlike private business models, checkoff organizations are funded through automatic assessments. Corey's focus isn't profit—it's impact: being a wise steward of every dollar to build trust, grow demand, and elevate the farmer's voice.Building Culture in a Virtual WorldWith two-thirds of Midwest Dairy's 55-person team working remotely, Corey emphasizes the importance of connection and common language. Through CliftonStrengths, her team speaks a shared language that helps them align around their unique gifts.Empowering Potential—Even When It's HardOne of Corey's biggest challenges? Seeing untapped potential in people who don't see it in themselves. But the greatest joy comes when she helps someone discover that potential and grow beyond what they thought possible—even beyond her organization.Modern Consumers Still Love Dairy—Just DifferentlyFrom high-protein cereals to heavy-cream coffee, dairy is thriving in new forms. The “Got Milk?” era has evolved into a demand for health, wellness, and clean protein—something Corey sees as a major opportunity for the industry.Notable Quotes“How you show up matters. People are always watching—so make a choice in how you show up every day.” – Corey R. Scott“Our purpose is clear: to reach the consumer effectively and move more product for our farmers.” – Corey R. Scott“It's not about cost of goods sold—it's about stewardship. How can we be the best steward of every dollar we're entrusted with?” – Corey R. Scott“When you have a clear North Star, you know what you're about—and maybe more importantly, what you're not.” – Mark Jewell“More is caught than taught. Culture spreads through example, not policy.” – Mark JewellAction StepsReflect on your own North Star—what guides your leadership decisions when values or opinions conflict?Ask your team: “How can we set you up to be your best self?” Then actually do it.Revisit your internal language and frameworks—do your people share a common language around strengths, growth, and purpose?Explore Survival of the Savvy (Corey's top leadership book recommendation) and consider adding it to your leadership reading list.Listen If You Are:A leader managing teams across distance and...

Host John Moe leads off this episode by extolling the virtues of foster dog caretaking and he enumerates the many dogs his family as tended to in the last year: Cowboy, Bug, Beans, Ducky, Pork Chop, Radar, and Car Wash. All these dogs were, and all dogs are, eccentric. Then we welcome cartoonist Nathan Pyle, the man who brings you those Strange Planet cartoons where aliens attempt to understand the eccentric ways of human beings. We are a fascinating and bizarre species as Nathan illustrates in his hilarious works. Nathan tells us all about his favorite YouTube habit, the key to his happy algorithm: long blocks of old commercials. He just adores them, finds them relaxing, distracting, and altogether peaceful. Hear about a young Shaquille O'Neal, the Easy Bake Oven, and the Got Milk? campaign as you drift away to sleep. Get your copy of Nathan Pyle's new book, Tuck Me In, wherever books are sold. Andrew needs backup that waiting in a long line for gas isn't worth whatever you're saving. Johnny needs backup that the Got Jesus campaign is a lazy ripoff of Got Milk and any Got whatever campaign should be banned. Enjoy!
