Podcast #1202: Home Theater System for under $2000

HDTV and Home Theater Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2025 43:38

On this week's show we look at how the strategies keep changing in the streaming wars. We spend your money and design a home theater system for less than $2000. And as usual we read your email and take a look at the week's news. News: Broadcast Schedule's New Paradigm 75% of Streamers Have Tried an Ad-Supported Plan Google TV users will soon be asked to rate apps Viewers can now add Apple TV+ to a DIRECTV subscription Top Streaming Services Change Up Strategies A Business Insider article suggests the streaming wars have shifted from competition to strategic alliances and distinct priorities. Netflix now prioritizes engagement over subscriber numbers, revamping its homepage with vertical video to rival YouTube and TikTok. Disney focuses on subscriber growth through bundles with Hulu and ESPN, aiming for profitable expansion. Warner Bros. Discovery's Max emphasizes profitability, leveraging high-quality content to retain subscribers rather than competing with Netflix's scale. Engagement is key as streamers build ad businesses. Netflix, with 8% of U.S. connected TV watch time, uses engagement to reduce churn and support its $2.2 billion ad business. Amazon's Prime Video scales ads by enabling them for all users unless they opt out, using shopping data to boost ad effectiveness. While Netflix and Amazon focus on engagement for ads, Disney, Paramount+ (79 million subscribers), and Peacock (41 million) prioritize subscriber growth, though neither is profitable yet. Profitability is critical for WBD, which has cut Max's content spending to focus on financial sustainability, leveraging HBO's legacy content. Its bundling with Disney+ and Hulu supports international growth. Apple TV+ faces high churn due to its limited library, leaving its strategy unclear. As streamers balance growth, engagement, and profitability, alliances and niche strategies redefine success in a crowded market. Home Theater System for under $2000 Ok so you bought a house and spent all your money but you already had a 70” TV from your previous home. And while that has been great you want something more out of your TV watching experience. Somehow you scrape together a $2000 budget and want to know what kind of “Home Theater” System you can cobble together to provide you with immersive surround sound. For this exercise we are assuming a typical living room (e.g., ~15x20 ft) and a focus on movies and general entertainment. We will emphasize value and performance while keeping the setup beginner-friendly. Key Considerations Room Size: Our medium-sized living room can benefit from a 5.1 or possibly a 5.1.2 (Dolby Atmos) setup for surround sound. We have chosen to stay with a 5.1 system for budget concerns. Priorities: Clear dialogue, deep bass, and immersive surround effects are key for movies and gaming. Music performance is secondary but still considered. Components: You'll need an AV receiver, speakers (front, center, surrounds), a subwoofer, and a streaming device.  Setup: We opted for wired speakers for reliability and cost savings over wireless systems, which can eat into the budget. Recommended System AV Receiver: Denon AVR-S760H 2021 Model  ($500 from Amazon) We are on a budget so a 2021 model that does everything you need for a small family room on a budget is absolutely the right call here. Don't overlook last year's models on your A/V equipment. No one will walk into your house and whisper about last years (or four years ago) model behind your back. This is a 7.2-channel receiver with 75W per channel, supporting 4K/120Hz, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and room calibration (Audyssey). It's versatile, beginner-friendly, and handles modern formats for movies and gaming. 6 HDMI inputs (3 with 8K support), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and HEOS for streaming. Refurbished units can save even more. Speaker System: RSL CG3M 5.1 home theater system ($850 Direct from RSL) We splurged a little on the speakers. The CG3Ms will not disappoint! We have been fans of RSL since we had Joe Rogers on the show about 15 years ago. He is a musician and understands what music is supposed to sound like and has designed speakers with that in mind.  This compact speaker system will put you right in the middle of a concert or movie! You really can't get better at this price. The 300 watt 10” subwoofer is plenty for your small to medium sized family room.   Speaker Wire and Cables: Monoprice ($50 Budget) Pretty much from day one we have been saying buy good cables but don't spend a lot of money doing so. $50 at Monoprice goes a long way for your Speaker and HDMI cables.   Streaming Device: ($150 Budget) A streaming device enhances your home theater by providing access to all kinds of entertainment options, including Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+,and YouTube. These dedicated streaming devices offer faster performance, regular software updates, and broader app compatibility. They also support advanced features like 4K HDR, Dolby Atmos, and voice control, elevating your viewing experience with superior picture and sound quality. Additionally, devices like Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Apple TV are portable, affordable, and easy to set up, making them a versatile upgrade for any home theater, regardless of your TV's age or brand. Sales Tax: $90 - $150 Unfortunately we can't forget the tax man. There are a few places in the US that do not have a sales tax and other areas range from 6% up to 10%. Total Cost: ~$1,640-$1,700 This leaves ~$300-$360 for a programmable remote, Atmos, or height speakers. Or a year of a new streaming service.  This system balances cost, performance, and future expandability, delivering an elevated experience for your new home without breaking the bank.

On this week's edition of the Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, a conversation with a trunkline pavement strategy specialist about how the work in his area helps inform investment decisions. Tim Lemon, who works in the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Bureau of Transportation Planning, talks about how pavement condition is measured and how the data is used.  He explains that remaining service life (RSL) is MDOT's primary pavement condition performance measure, which indicates the number of years before the pavement is anticipated to reach poor condition. It reflects the anticipated time in years that a pavement section can continue to provide acceptable levels of service, considering factors such as distress, structural integrity, ride quality, and functionality. He also explains that while state trunklines (I, M and US routes) don't account for the majority of road miles in the state, they carry 53 percent of total traffic and more than 75 percent of commercial traffic in Michigan.

It was a dramatic week for USMNT players abroad, with headlines coming from Italy, the Netherlands, England, and beyond. In Coppa Italia action, Christian Pulisic started for AC Milan as they sought their first cup title since 2003, but it was Bologna who stole the spotlight. Dan Ndoye, who the USMNT will face in June with Switzerland, scored the only goal to lift Bologna to their first major trophy in 51 years. AC Milan now looks ahead to Sunday's critical Serie A matchup against Roma, with Juventus facing Udinese the same day. Elsewhere, Inter take on Lazio and Parma host Napoli in key matchups that could shake up the title race. Over in the Eredivisie, Malik Tillman turned heads with a brace in PSV's 4-1 win over Heracles, while Sergiño Dest returned to form with an assist. Ajax conceded a 90th-minute equalizer, shooting PSV atop the table by a single point with one game remaining. In the English Championship playoffs, Sunderland dramatically advanced past Haji Wright & Coventry thanks to Dan Ballard's 120th-minute goal. The USMNT's fall schedule is taking shape, with two September friendlies announced. The U.S. will face South Korea on September 6th and Japan on September 9th. These matches follow the USMNT's Gold Cup title bid this summer on FOX.  Stateside, MLS Rivalry Week brings intense matchups. Columbus Crew face in-state rivals FC Cincinnati in the Hell is Real Derby. The always-heated Portland vs. Seattle clash follows LAFC's 4-0 rout of Seattle and Portland's 0-0 draw with RSL. In Southern California, LA Galaxy take on LAFC after blowing a lead in a dramatic 3-2 loss to Philadelphia. Inter Miami hosts Orlando after a fiery 3-3 draw where Messi's frustration drew Bruce Arena into the mix Alexi and Mosse wrap the podcast with a question debating if "Golden Goal" should return, and reviews are rolling in for the newly unveiled USMNT and USWNT kits. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Atlanta United scored first, but lost control of the match with Nashville afterwards. Following the goal, Nashville outshot Atlanta 10-2 and had 70% possession. They eventually found an equalizer and the match finished in an unfulfilling 1-1 draw. Atlanta is back in action next Saturday in Chicago against the Fire, who will be missing their goalkeeper Chris Brady following his red card in the first half of the Fire's 0-0 draw with Orlando.LA Galaxy lost last night in Kansas City 1-0 even though they didn't concede a shot, the goal was an own goal in the 13th minute. The Galaxy also lost both of their star wingers, Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec, due to injury. Other MLS highlights of note include Vancouver going unbeaten in 10 games after a 2-1 win over RSL, Miami bouncing back from two home losses with a win over Red Bulls, and New England keeping their hot streak going since putting Carles Gil into a free role in their 3-5-2 shape.Parity is alive and well in the NWSL as the top 8 teams are separated by 4 points. Kansas City and Orlando are tied for the top spot with 15 points so far in the season.A verdict is expected tomorrow by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the Club Leon case against FIFA over their spot in the Club World Cup. If FIFA's ruling is upheld, then we'll see the playoff game between LAFC and Club America go ahead. The winner of that would start the tournament here in Atlanta against Chelsea on June 16. Harry Kane has finally won a trophy after almost 700 games as a pro for club and country. Of course it wasn't straightforward... Bayern drew to RB Leipzig 3-3 on a late goal from the opposition and needed Leverkusen to slip up in their game later in the day, which ended 2-2 giving Bayern the title. Two big promotions, Pisa in Italy and Paris FC in France. Pisa hasn't been in Serie A since 1991 while Paris FC hasn't played in Ligue 1 for 46 years. Nothing beats Burnley's celebrations for getting back to the Premier League, they had Natasha Bedingfield on hand to sing the unofficial promotion anthem for them "Unwritten". She sang it for the fans at Turf Moor and the squad sang it with her in the locker room.Playoffs are set in Mexico and Argentina, they'll start next weekend. Champions League in Europe returns this week with Barcelona and Inter hopeful on injury returns while PSG and Arsenal try to shake off league losses over the weekend.More Espresso Tuesday on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.

Don't discount the Whitecaps in this one, they're currently leading the Supporters' Shield race in MLS and navigated tricky matches with Monterrey and Pumas to get here. Our old friend Juanjo Purata leveled the other semifinal late for Tigres against Cruz Azul. They head to Mexico City for next week's second leg tied at 1-1. Milan hasn't had a great season this year, but they've owned their rivals Inter. Yesterday, they advanced to the Coppa Italia final with a 3-0 win, ruining Inter's treble hopes. Real Madrid defeated Getafe 1-0 yesterday to keep pace with Barcelona at the top of La Liga. However, they lost Eduardo Camavinga due to a torn adductor tendon, he will miss the rest of the season with the injury. They play Barca on Saturday in the Copa del Rey final in Sevilla. Reading have gotten another extension in their deadline to sell the club, they are in the final stages of the transaction and have until May 5 to complete it. The new buyer, who is still confidential at this stage, will take over the current financial obligations of the club right now as they try to earn a promotion playoff spot in League One. Everton announced a new investor, Rangers confirmed the previously reported negotiations with the San Francisco 49ers, and Spezia was sold with Charlie Stillitano becoming the Serie B club's new President. The drama with Vinicius Jr. and Real Madrid was covered a great piece by Mario Cortegana in The Athletic. Basically, don't believe the Spanish tabloids that a contract extension with the club is imminent and don't discount the possibility of Vini ending up in Saudi Arabia for an insane amount of money both to him and Real Madrid. And then, don't be surprised if Madrid go shopping in England to replace him. Check out the podcast for more money talk in the game around the world.More Espresso on Friday on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.
