Welcome to my bedroom closet! Today, my guest of honor is a photograph of the San Francisco Polytechnic High School cornerstone, which dedicated Polytechnic alumni are working to return to where the school once stood. Included in this podcast is a reading of a short story by Marianne Eichenbaum: "I am the Polytechnic High School Cornerstone and this is my journey."  The music used in the podcast is the Our Director march, composed by Frederick Ellsworth Bigelow in 1892 and recorded by the Victor Military Band in 1911.  The recording was furnished by the Library of Congress and is being used for this podcast project with the permission of Sony Music.  Thank you! Welcome to my bedroom closet. Okay, I know what my website claims.  Laurel Anne Hill crafts stories with inspirational premises, right?  Worthiness is rewarded, right?  Yet many of my short stories these days lurk in shadows of the horror genre.  In fact, Horror Addicts (http://www.horroraddicts.net) named me “Most Wicked 2011″ for my entry, Flight of Destiny, in their Wicked Women Writers Challenge.  How can a gal who believes in worthiness be most wicked? Worthiness has its reward.  Unworthiness does, too. But wait, I’ve been known to inflict horror upon my characters who try to live decent lives, even let some of them lose their battles against evil.  How do I reconcile that disparity with my website statements? Bad things happen to good people every day.  They misread situations.  They miscalculate their own abilities.  Sometimes, through no fault of their own, they end up in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Encounters with “the dark” forces characters to find strength within their weaknesses or else succumb. In other words, the power of love, honor, faith and duty really can surmount daunting obstacles and transform lives.  But sometimes such power fails, leaving characters to fend for themselves whatever way they can. Flight of Destiny stirs steampunk, infidelity, jealously, and a radioactive poison into a delicious hot-pot of horror.  I hope you enjoy my story, which lasts approximately 33 minutes. Welcome to my Bedroom Closet. Today, I'm reading "The Capturing," my 44-minute fantasy short story set in the biotechnology industry in the San Francisco Bay Area.  A scary event at a real biotech company twenty years ago inspired my writing of this tale. Please note that my main character in "The Capturing" does use some profanity. I hope you enjoy my story. Warm wishes, Laurel Anne Hill (Author of "Heroes Arise")http://www.laurelannehill.com

Welcome to my bedroom closet. When the earthquake hit Haiti last January, that country's history of poor government was largely responsible for the extent of the devastation and inability to deal with the aftermath.  Lax building codes were only one ingredient in the stew.  My podcast, "Haiti:  A Patient with Hope," provides an update about current recovery efforts in Haiti, and some insight as to why progress has been so slow. I hope you find my essay informative. Warm regards, Laurel Anne Hill (Author of "Heroes Arise") http://www.laurelannehill.com

Welcome to my bedroom closet!  In 2002, my husband and I spent the month of November in Paris.  Our dream vacation.  I was still recovering from a severe illness when I attended worship services at St. Sulpice, a church nearby our rented apartment.  I experienced more than I had anticipated that Sunday morning, and "Crescendo," relates my true, inspirational (and award-winning) story.  None of the music in my podcast came from the grand organ at St. Sulpice, but such music can be found through Google.  The introduction and closing music I used was graciously provided by Looperman at http://www.looperman.com.  Warm regards, Laurel Anne Hill (Author of "Heroes Arise") http://www.laurelannehill.com

Welcome to my bedroom closet! In 2004, KQED-FM (NPR, San Francisco) broadcast "A Handful of Band-Aids," my perspective on the plight of homeless families in Contra Costa County, California.  I had written "A Handful of Band-Aids" in the latter part of 2003.  Today I'm posting a slightly longer version of the piece used by KQED-FM.  In this podcast, I also include information about the Winter Nights Rotating Family Shelter, a worthy nonprofit organization operating in Contra Costa County.  Winter Nights is a project of the Social Justice Alliance of the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County. Needless to say, I'm a supporter of Winter Nights.  In fact, I used the debut of my science fiction/fantasy novel, "Heroes Arise," to raise funds for the Winter Nights Family Shelter. For more information about the Winter Nights Shelter program, go to http://cccwinternights.org. For more information about me or my novel, "Heroes Arise," please visit my website at http://www.laurelannehill.com. Warm wishes, Laurel Anne Hill (Author of "Heroes Arise")

Welcome to my bedroom closet! What do I do when I crave a festive dinner but finances and dietary restrictions keep me at home?  First of all, I consult the "oracle of the refrigerator" and use my imagination. Two Happy Hearts: Savoring an Anniversary Dinner relates the true story of my 34th wedding anniversary.  My husband had recently undergone cardiac bypass surgery and, thus, major lifestyle changes.  We both had retired and the economy had tanked.  Our anniversary had fallen on a Monday when many local restaurants were closed.  I took the old fashioned solution and cooked a fancy, "heart-healthy" dinner myself.  Listen to my story (14 minutes) to see how things turned out. Cook heart-healthy to keep hearts happy! Laurel Anne Hill (Author of Heroes Arise) http://www.laurelannehill.com
