On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I'm diving into why we shouldn't be "parrots" – just mindlessly repeating the things we're told, the words we read, or what we hear in our environment - without thinking for ourselves. Drawing from some personal stories about actual parrots and my experiences working with author Marianne Williamson, I share how important it is to develop your own unique voice and point-of-view.I discuss how we often unconsciously repeat sayings and stories from our childhood, family of origin, or the media, without ever even questioning them.Whether it's religious dogma, political views, or random so called "facts" we've heard online, I invite people to do their homework, to dig deeper, to spend some time with yourself, and figure out what you truly think, feel, and believe. The world doesn't need another “carbon copy” of what's already out there - it needs YOU! Your unique experiences, insights, and one-of-a-kind perspectives are invaluable. So, I encourage us all to be curious, ask questions, challenge inherited narratives, and have the courage to speak our authentic truth, even if it means standing out from the familiar crowd. My hope is to inspire you to be the first ever version of yourself, not a watered-down replica of somebody else.Whether you're dealing with old family stories, professional expectations, or societal pressures, remember: your individual voice matters. So, let's stop parroting and start exploring what YOU really think and feel!KK'S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Don't mindlessly repeat beliefs without understanding their true origin.• Question everything you've been taught, especially childhood-inherited narratives.• Your unique perspective is valuable.• Research deeply and gather your own empirical evidence.• The world needs your authentic voice, not some watered-down version of somebody else.• Be courageous enough to develop and share your original thoughts.• Verify sources and information before repeating what you've read or heard.• Your individual experiences create a perspective that no one else has.• Continuously learn, grow, and refine your understanding of the greater world.• The Nest - Group Mentoring Program BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Integrative Change Worker, Coach and Hypnotist. She's known for her dynamic storytelling, her sense of humor, her Boston accent, and her no-BS, down-to-earth approach to Spirituality and transformational work. Sarah had a "tick fiasco" in the wilderness, and she'll never be the same. We get some updates from Susie about Pete Rose's eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame since his death and we hear the scandal involving the Napalm Girl image we discussed recently, and how the wrong photographer may have taken credit for the last fifty years. We hear actually useful happiness tips that are more fun than the usual ones we already know. We learn about scientists who trained parrots to video call each other, and why Sarah wants to know if they were actually "talking" to each other. And we hear how the social birds were also the most likeable. Plus, there is a pigeon thief in New York City, and some people think they're being stolen to be sold for a sport involving the birds in Pennsylvania.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:This episode is sponsored by/brought to you by BetterHelp. Life doesn't always go as planned. For Lyndsay Mitcheson, founder of Neo Walk, it threw a curveball so wild it upended everything she knew about herself. But instead of letting it define her, she turned it into a story of resilience, creativity, and, as she likes to say, “a lot of Yorkshire grit and a little bit of sparkle.”Her story is quite amazing, and includes training to be a circus performer, and playing the role of a one-legged stripper on the big screen!Lyndsay's fabulous walking sticks have been bought by people around the world, including celebrities. She shares her office with her cockatoo Blanco, who had plenty to say during our interview....!

fWotD Episode 2938: Red-capped parrot Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 21 May 2025, is Red-capped parrot. The red-capped parrot (Purpureicephalus spurius) is a species of broad-tailed parrot native to southwestern Australia. It was described by Heinrich Kuhl in 1820, with no subspecies recognised. It has long been classified in its own genus owing to its distinctive elongated beak, though genetic analysis shows that it lies within the lineage of the Psephotellus parrots and that its closest relative is the mulga parrot (Psephotellus varius). Not easily confused with other parrot species, it has a bright crimson crown, green-yellow cheeks, and a distinctive long bill. The wings, back, and long tail are dark green, and the underparts are purple-blue. The adult female is very similar though sometimes slightly duller than the male; her key distinguishing feature is a white stripe on the wing under-surface. Juveniles are predominantly green.Found in woodland and open savanna country, the red-capped parrot is predominantly herbivorous, consuming seeds, particularly of eucalypts, as well as flowers and berries, but insects are occasionally eaten. Nesting takes place in tree hollows, generally of older large trees. Although the red-capped parrot has been shot as a pest and has been affected by land clearing, the population is growing and the species is considered of least-concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It has a reputation of being anxious and difficult to breed in captivity. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:36 UTC on Wednesday, 21 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Red-capped parrot on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Salli.

We're diving into a critical and often controversial topic: parrot wing clipping (and why it's something you shouldn't do). While many people clip their bird's wings with the best of intentions, the reality is that this practice can lead to potentially serious physical and mental consequences, some of which may even seem unnoticeable. Based on our personal experiences, we'll share why allowing parrots to remain fully flighted is the best and most enriching choice you can make for your feathered companion. We invite you to step into your parrot's shoes and ask: what truly serves their best interests? Together, let's take a critical and thoughtful look at the care we provide for these beloved birds, by breaking bygone standards and improving the quality of life for Parrot's everywhere.Helpful links: Research report: Welfare Assessment of Flight-restrained Captive BirdsWing Trimming: Best practices and Welfare ImplicationsClipping and Trimming FAQ from Aviator HarnessSend us a textLearn more about Parrot Stars and shop online at parrotstars.com
The latest “State of the Air” report by the American Lung Association finds that nearly half of people living in the U.S. breathe unhealthy levels of air pollution. Soot and smog are on the rise in part because climate change is bringing more wildfires and ozone-forming conditions. Also, a key climate modeling program within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA is slated for near-elimination, according to a draft White House memo. That could have consequences for weather forecasting, disaster preparedness, agriculture, military operations and more. Plus - parakeets have astounding vocal abilities and are able to mimic as many as 1700 human words. And their brains may provide insight into how we humans talk. In a recent study, researchers found human-like neural activity during vocalization. They hope this research may help shed light on communication disorders in humans such as autism. ***Join us on Zoom Thursday, May 8 at 8 p.m. Eastern for the next Living on Earth Book Club event! We've joked about "curses" before, but legitimately, this episode is cursed.Due to record way back in January, work schedules, illnesses, and internet issues prevented us getting back to it until late April....and even then the curse proved that it wasn't done with us yet. Eric's audio starts cutting out in parts in the 2nd part of the episode, the internet connection got so bad that we eliminated most talk about The Program (everyone but Eric hated it anyway) and we couldn't do ANY of Very Important Questions. At that point I was just ready to get anything we could out of this episode and move the fuck on.We're joined by Jake (& later David) from Real Piece Of Sitcom, the podcast going through every sitcom in thematic order, which you can hear each Thursday. They are also part of the incredible Twitch channel, Lets Play Deathray, where they variety stream all sorts of awesome content, banter back and forth, and interact with their community in amazing ways. Definitely check that out, they stream every night except Friday and Saturday's around 7:30 PM MST.Super Producer/Co-host Jared, fromIntern Talking Points and Riley's Parrot starts salty, gets satiated and silent in the middle, and ends salty again, the natural order of things. We went in alphabetical order, talking about:Payback (Jared)Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (Jake)The Princess Bride (David)The Program (Eric)No "Very Important Questions" for the guest this week, but I'll still post them to X where YOU, the listener, can weigh in on the "would you rather" questions. Lizzie Lee is a genre-defying vocalist blending classical precision with the soul and spontaneity of New York's jazz tradition. Her voice—praised for its rich color and “acrobatics and élan”—offers a bold reinterpretation of the American Songbook and beyond. Raised in Alaska and trained in Paris and New York, Lizzie brings a rare combination of global sensibility and emotional connection to her work. Her debut album, 72nd Street, recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio, is a striking statement of identity: lush, lyrical, and rooted in both tradition and risk. The album features a stellar lineup including Joe Farnsworth (drums), Stacy Dillard (tenor sax), John Webber (bass), Joe Block (keys), and Rob Nuovo (guitar). With performances across NYC, the northeast and internationally, and acclaim from artists like Bill Frisell and David Broza, Lizzie is merging elegance with edge, storytelling with swing, while fast becoming a name to know among vocalists in the jazz world. In the classical genre, Lizzie is a dynamic soprano praised for her “brilliant coloratura, acrobatics, and élan” (Opera Magazine) and has performed across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Lizzie debuted in Europe at Staatstheater Darmstadt and has received international acclaim for her roles as the Parrot in the world premiere of Mahosot: Architect of Dreams by Somtow Sucharitkul in Bangkok and as the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro in NYC. She has appeared as a soloist with the Jenaer Philharmonie, Bergische Symphoniker, and in concerts in Vienna with Maestro Francisco Araiza. Her artistry has been shaped through work with legendary mentors such as Martina Arroyo and the late Dalton Baldwin, whose influence continues to inspire her interpretive depth and stylistic sensitivity. Lizzie has performed at iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House and has worked closely with artists from many of the world's most prestigious theaters including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, and Opéra Bastille.

John Warner shares about his latest book, More Than Words: How to Think About Writing in the Age of AI on episode 564 of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast. Quotes from the episode If we treat the output of large language models as writing, as opposed to syntax generation, which is how I characterize it, then we're allowing the meaning of writing and the experience of writing to be degraded for humans. -John Warner Clearly, this is not feedback that is unique to human beings and unique to how we read. -John Warner There is no pivot for humanity. We're going to be humans whether we like it or not, and we are going to live our life through a series of experiences which convey some manner of meaning to ourselves. We still have to live. We still have to have a day to day experience of the world. We still have to have access to our own minds. We still have to relate to other people. This is the stuff of being human. -John Warner Every human is a unique intelligence. Developing a unique intelligence is a work of teaching and learning. And honoring that is the highest calling of a teacher. -John Warner Resources More Than Words: How to Think About Writing in the Age of AI, by John Warner The Writer's Practice: Building Confidence in Your Nonfiction Writing, by John Warner The Six Million Dollar Man The Bionic Woman Emily M.
