Laurel Anne Hill grew up in San Francisco, with more dreams of an adventure than good sense or money. Her close brushes with death, love of family, respect for honor and belief in a higher power influence her writing and life. Her early home life included a happy-drunk Grandfather and a mean-drunk Dad:  So mean and violent that she, her Mother, Grandmother, and brother often hid in the basement to escape his wrath. This life pattern, of course, set the stage for the first marriage to an abuser.  It also created fertile ground in her mind to create heroic female characters and alternate Universes.  At the age of 5, before she could read or write, she dictated stories to her older sister and used paper cut-outs as an illustration! Her journey through childhood violence and domestic emotional abuse led Laurel Anne to become a strong, creative, talented and honored author. Laurel Anne’s best-selling book, The Engine Woman’s Light, has won prestigious awards in the category of steampunk…which she explains is a fascinating alternative literary Universe.  Laurel Ann’s diverse life experience has inspired her creative mind in many ways, as you’ll discover in this podcast conversation. A pair of staples are  A) A good hair product to tame or fluff your hair and define your style and B) A BB or CC cream, with skin benefits and good coverage. For guys who don't use makeup, a colorless but mattifying foundation primer is undetectable on the skin but has skin benefits and works some pore-vanishing magic! 4. A staple black bottom piece. Black skirt, jeans, leggings, bondage pants, cargo pants/shorts. It's the most versatile thing in your wardrobe and the easiest to change as a seasonal trend piece! 5. Favorite fandom t-shirt(s). Whether it's a band shirt, vintage horror movie tie-in or blackletter gym, club or coffee shop shirt, REPRESENT your alternative interests by displaying them once in a while. Extra points if it's somehow distressed, laced or bleach-'dyed'. Get creative! 6. A black or white button-down shirt. You can wear it so many ways! Over T's and tanks, under vests and sweaters, tucked or untucked. I use a men's pleated tuxedo shirt that I stole from my swain. 7. One or two unusual pieces or trademark 'you' looks. For example a couple of mine are 'all white and pale with intense lips and eyes' and 'all black but frilly and with heavy makeup' and I build most of my wardrobe around these kinds of looks. 8. A go-to 'uniform'. A set of clothes and a practiced makeup look that you can throw together in very minimal time and always look fab. Mine is a black TrippNYC dress, blow drying my hair straight and a winged black liner/red lip look. Out the door in 20 (shh, don't tell!)! 9. A great pair of boots or shoes. Docs, Demonia Buckle Boots, your trusty Converse Chucks. Keep them polished/neat even if your look is more deconstructed/grunge. 10. A fierce attitude! I wouldn't say it was the fun-est because I was nervous as hell, but to be able to talk to an author that has changed your life is an experience I won't forget. 8. Season 8 No Episode... I got to interview Mike Bennett live via Skype at BayCon and it was so awesome. The audio messed up and I was unable to share it with you, but those of us that were there was so thrilled. Def. something we'll never forget. If you think Mike Bennett is cool on his podcasts, he is even more awesome live! 9. Season 1 -Horror Con in Second Life. Was so much fun. We had free reign because Mark Eller was the host and he let me do whatever I wanted. We had poetry readings in the cemetery, he killed me in the tavern and then we had a fashion show by hanging for Mimielle's fashion label in SL where I walked the cat walk, got hung, and then dropped down to make my final lap. Was so much fun! 10. I will never forget my very first show. I was fresh off my first ever podcast called Office Angst, I wanted to do something to do with Horror and I had no idea if this show would fly or even if it would go past that first episode. Sad is I think I've lost it... It was deleted from the site and I can not find it in my archive... so it might be lost forever!   http://traffic.libsyn.com/horroraddicts/HorrorAddicts100.mp3 Find all articles and interviews at: http://www.horroraddicts.net ----------------------- Write in re: ideas, questions, opinions, horror cartoons, favorite movies, etc... horroraddicts@gmail.com ------------------------ h o s t e s s   Emerian Rich s t a f f Sapphire Neal, David Watson, Dan Shaurette, Marc Vale, KBatz, Mimielle, Dawn Wood Want to be a part of the HA staff? Welcome to my bedroom closet. One hundred thirty-seven years ago, my Mexican great-grandfather, Emigdio Medina, composed a schottische, entitled El Tecolote.  The Owl.  I discovered the sheet music in an online library listing in 2010.  A long-forgotten song?  Might no one have heard the piece for over 100 years? I asked my dear sister-in-law, Martha, to play El Tecolote on her piano for me to record.  She suffers from Alzheimer's, but has not forgotten her music. Lost music.  Lost memory.  Together both were found, at least for a while.  Ah, the magic and harmony of two musician's talents, even if one has left this world and the other slowly slips away. For those who may be interested, the WorldCat listing for the sheet music is as follows: http://www.worldcat.org/title/tecolote-the-owl-schottische/oclc/146589970&referer=brief_results "The Overland Monthly," Vol. 15, August, 1875, No. 2, page 208, listed "El Tecolote" as new music received. Please enjoy this bit of Mexican culture from yesteryear's San Francisco.  The song was played and recorded totally impromptu.  Please forgive the occasional faltering and errors.   Warm Wishes, Laurel Anne Hill  (http://www.laurelannehill.com)

Welcome to my bedroom closet. Okay, I know what my website claims.  Laurel Anne Hill crafts stories with inspirational premises, right?  Worthiness is rewarded, right?  Yet many of my short stories these days lurk in shadows of the horror genre.  In fact, Horror Addicts (http://www.horroraddicts.net) named me “Most Wicked 2011″ for my entry, Flight of Destiny, in their Wicked Women Writers Challenge.  How can a gal who believes in worthiness be most wicked? Worthiness has its reward.  Unworthiness does, too. But wait, I’ve been known to inflict horror upon my characters who try to live decent lives, even let some of them lose their battles against evil.  How do I reconcile that disparity with my website statements? Bad things happen to good people every day.  They misread situations.  They miscalculate their own abilities.  Sometimes, through no fault of their own, they end up in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Encounters with “the dark” forces characters to find strength within their weaknesses or else succumb. In other words, the power of love, honor, faith and duty really can surmount daunting obstacles and transform lives.  But sometimes such power fails, leaving characters to fend for themselves whatever way they can. Flight of Destiny stirs steampunk, infidelity, jealously, and a radioactive poison into a delicious hot-pot of horror.  I hope you enjoy my story, which lasts approximately 33 minutes. Warm wishes, Laurel Anne Hill(Author of HEROES ARISE)http://www.laurelannehill.com

Here's Chapter 4 of HEROES ARISE: An Appropriate Greeting.  HEROES ARISE is a parable about breaking the cycle of vengeance, about reaching into our own personal darkness and finding the light of reason.  I've set HEROES ARISE in the world of Thard.  HEROES ARISE is an adventure and love story, suitable for ages 9 - 90, and also is available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble, in hard cover, trade paper and as an ebook.  Jean M. Auel was kind enough to provide the following endorsement for HEROES ARISE. Heroes Arise by Laurel Anne Hill is a surprisingly exciting and moving story that gripped my attention from the first word and wouldn't let me put it down. This author's first work shows a strong talent and a remarkable future. — Jean M. Welcome to my bedroom closet. Have you ever noticed a patch of ground where nothing ever seems to grow?  My two teen characters, Howie and Frank, encounter such a place in my creepy new short story, "The Grave of Mario Bandini."  The inspiration for "The Grave of Mario Bandini" came from my friends Donna and Jon.  When I was eleven or twelve years old, my friend Donna speculated that a patch of wet earth (where nothing grew) near the local mortuary was really quicksand.  In 2009,  Jon Cory (author of "A Plague of Scoundrels") suggested I write a short story about a patch of soil where nothing grows.  I recalled what Donna had told me many years ago. If you enjoy "The Grave of Mario Bandini," you may also like "Wings of Revenge," my non-typical vampire short story.  Go to http://www.horroraddicts.net, episode #33 podcast in January 2010.  Please note that "Wings of Revenge" and "The Grave of Mario Bandini" contain some profanity.  Happy listening. Hello and welcome to my bedroom closet.  Get ready for "Real Vampires Don't Snore," my award-winning short story first published in 1997 by Calliope Magazine and recently re-released by Calliope due to popular demand.  My sense of humor itched when I wrote "Real Vampires Don't Snore."  Being a mother of a teen, I had to scratch that itch and laugh. Please note that my next podcast will involve my comparison of "Real Vampires Don't Snore" with my other vampire coming of age story, "Eternal Poetry."  My writing changed between 1997 and 2005.  I'd like to tell you how and why. If you enjoy this story, please subscribe to all my podcasts via iTunes.  And visit my website http://www.laurelannehill.com to learn about my other works, including my award-winning novel, Heroes Arise (KOMENAR Publishing, 2007). Thank you!
