Food freedom might sound like a completely unrealistic option for you. But what if I told you that you can listen to your body, eat more or less what your body needs and wants, and still achieve the results you want? It’s about finding that balance between intuitive eating and making sure the food you do eat is as healthy and nutritious as it can be. How to Retrain Your Body from Chronic Fasting Asking your body if it wants to eat Knowing when you’re full Balancing your meals Following intuitive eating without being super specific The Chief Complaint: "I Can't Have Food Freedom and Achieve Results" There is this common misconception that we have to be so strict with our food and follow all these restrictive diets in order to actually lose weight. Even more than this, that you can’t possibly eat what your body craves without gaining weight. Let’s talk about why this is absolutely not the case! What Food Freedom Is You can have total food freedom while still hitting your goals and achieving the results you want. In fact, when you learn to trust your body and pick up on the cues it gives you, your goals will actually be way easier to hit. Not to mention way less restrictive. Food freedom is all about tapping into your intuition and listening to your body. Eat when you’re hungry and stop eating when you’re full. If these are completely new concepts to you, it really is all about slowing down and paying attention. A good example is that I know I’m in fat-burning mode when my body is craving fattier foods. Similarly, if I’ve been going really hard in the gym, I know that I will need to up my protein intake to nourish my muscles. Finding Your Own Optimal Health So many of us eat when we’re not hungry, for whatever reason. Sometimes, that reason is actually anxiety, which can mimic hunger signals. That’s why it’s important to get really in tune with your body’s wants and needs. What I’d really encourage you to do is figure out what optimal health looks and feels like for you. Not what some exercise program or diet tells you is right, but what actually feels good. Included in this might be a ten-pound weight range where that fluctuates based on your body’s needs at the time. If you do want to achieve some more specific body results, I’d recommend combining intuitive eating with my mindful macros approach. This way, you eat what’s best for your body while still fuelling it with the nutrients and macros it needs to perform best. Homework for Women Physicians What does food freedom mean to you? Marcela Niemeyer has always been an achiever, driven to be the best at whatever she sets her mind to do. In some families, that can create conflict, particularly when a parent doesn’t have the same drive, and cannot understand why a child would put so much pressure on herself to meet and exceed her goals. But Marcela’s father understood her. He knew that if she gave up on something, it would haunt her for many years, that she would face regrets and those “what if” questions for decades. She was miserable in those first few months of her senior year of high school, studying abroad in the United States, thousands of miles from her home and family in Brazil. It’s not because she didn’t fit in, or she wasn’t making friends. What made her miserable was that she was working so hard in academics and sports, and not meeting her own expectations of achievement. Marcela was starting from scratch when she decided on track & field, her sport at home was swimming. Her placement in the group was the lowest of the athletes, and she wasn’t used to starting at the bottom. Academics were a struggle too, and for the first time, she saw low grades that crushed her confidence. She called her father: “I want to come home.” He told her she couldn’t come home. He was adamant that she stay and work through the challenges. He absolutely refused to let her give up, despite her desperate tears over the phone. As I heard this story, I was moved to tears. I’m a parent, and I know the sacrifice her father made to say those words, to turn away from his child and tell her no, she must continue to struggle. There isn’t much worse for a parent than to witness that pain and not be able to - or to know better than to - fix it for your child. She’s driven, and her father knew she’d figure out what to do next to make life bearable. Marcela worked hard to improve, finishing the year at the top of her team, and graduated with her class, her mother and father traveled from Brazil to watch her cross the stage and receive her diploma. Her whole life follows that course, trying things others might be too afraid to attempt, full of curiosity about herself and the world around her, and in a constant state of learning and growing. She’s a force of life. Enjoy learning more about Marcela Niemeyer, you’ll love her stories, her tenaciousness, and her love for life and people. —- Marcela Niemeyer has decades of experience in a variety of HR roles, and is currently on the lookout for her next adventure. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. Looping your wife in on a new property is one surefire way to avoid buying a dumpster fire. Jay Adkins learned that when he bought a sob story and a rural home from a down-on-her-luck seller for $6500. Investing in small towns can be a solid way to build a portfolio, but there are some pitfalls you’ll want to avoid. When Jay and Annie bought the house, it wasn’t entirely sight unseen. They did have pictures, but they didn’t realize just how old those pictures were. The moment Jay saw the house for the first time, he knew that paying for a $350 inspection would’ve saved him the headache that this house became. Not only was the heat turned off, but it was winter and the pipes had all burst, including the hot water heater. And getting a construction crew out to the property, which was 2 ½ hours away from their home, was more difficult than Jay and Annie anticipated. Sending crews out to the town meant an overnight stay so that they could get in a full day’s work.Included in this saga (which you don’t want to miss):—Three separate tenant buyers—Depressed manufacturing Ohio town—Plus a muskrat in search of nutri-grain bars—And a murder in the back alleyJay and Annie love putting tenant buyers in their homes, and they see it as their mission to help low income homeowners get into a house. They talk about the requirements they put in place to protect their investment and give their tenants a running shot at cleaning up their credit and applying for a home loan. They fix and flip, wholesale, and offer lease options, all with heart and humor. What's Inside:—How Jay and Annie structure land contracts with a property.—Are you a little nervous about investing in small towns? You shouldn’t be.—How they help low income homeowners get into a house.—The difficulties of getting handymen or Realtors to work in a small town.

On today’s New Books in History, we sit down with Dr. Nimisha Barton to discuss her new book, Reproductive Citizens: Gender, Immigration, and the State in Modern France (Cornell University Press, 2020). This conversation is a perfect supplemental teaching tool to assign a class reading Reproductive Citizens as is the impressive digital appendices that Dr. Barton created to accompany her work. Building on the massive amount of primary and secondary source material that Dr. Barton examined during research, she built a digital repository and archive for students and researchers to use. Included in these appendices are statistics on foreigners in France and descriptions of sources as well as methodologies. A testament to Dr. Barton’s commitment to diversity and accessibility in education, she provides this resource free to all in the hopes that students and researchers studying women, gender, sexuality, and/or migration can benefit from them. To learn more, please visit this website. About Reproductive Citizens: In the familiar tale of mass migration to France from 1880 onwards, we know very little about the hundreds of thousands of women who formed a critical part of those migration waves. In Reproductive Citizens, Nimisha Barton argues that their relative occlusion in the historical record hints at a larger and more problematic oversight: the role of sex and gender in shaping the experiences of migrants to France before the Second World War. Barton's compelling history of social citizenship demonstrates how, through the routine application of social policies, state and social actors worked separately towards a shared goal: repopulating France with immigrant families. Filled with voices gleaned from census reports, municipal statistics, naturalization dossiers, court cases, police files, and social worker registers, Reproductive Citizens shows how France welcomed foreign-born men and women, mobilizing naturalization, family law, social policy, and welfare assistance to ensure they would procreate, bearing French-assimilated children. Barton concludes that, in return for generous social provisions and refuge in dark times, immigrants joined the French nation through marriage and reproduction, breadwinning and child-rearing—in short, through families and family-making—which made them more French than even formal citizenship status could. Desiree Adaway is no stranger to being the only black person in a room, or even in an entire community. At 16, while skipping class, she saw an ad in the back of a magazine about exchange student programs and applied, signing her mother’s name on the application, the passport application, and all other necessary documents. She was accepted into the program, but had to decline the invitation because she knew her mother couldn’t afford it. The program administrator found a sponsor, and Desiree started packing - before ever talking to her mother. Desiree didn’t want to go to Germany. She felt a deep need to go, like she would suffocate if she didn’t go. Arriving in Germany, she was placed with a host family in a tiny town where she was the only person with dark brown skin within more than a 500 mile radius. Her peers touched her skin and hair, stared at her, she felt like an animal at the zoo. And that was only the beginning. Throughout school and career, she had many of these experiences, including being the only black person at board meetings, management team events. She lost track of the number of times strangers have reached out without hesitation, much less asking to touch her hair, her skin, one woman at a market hugged her as if she had no ownership of her own body. People have had an outrageous sense of entitlement to touch her. This may not seem like a big deal, but when you put this entitlement into the context of the history of the enslavement of dark skinned people, you might begin to understand. This part of her story particularly resonated with me because of my experiences as a pregnant woman. Strangers would randomly reach out to touch my belly - and I know this is a common experience during pregnancy. It’s absurd. Our conversation here is rich with experiences, stories to open eyes to the many different ways racism is experienced in a variety of environments. The highlight for me was when I asked Desiree about a positive experience when a white person acknowledged racism, acknowledged the beauty of diversity as opposed to pretending to be “color blind.” She said that her business partner, early in their relationship, pulled her aside and said these words: One day my whiteness will betray me and I’m going to make a mistake. What will we do to move through that? The extraordinary thing about how Desiree told me this is that she turned it around and applied that sentiment to herself. She acknowledged that at some point she will fall into that trap as well, potentially with gender identity issues and other parts of humanity that she’s unfamiliar. If we want to address inequity and racism, we must acknowledge it as it exists for those who experience it. If you’re ready to take action as a human, you don’t have to make huge gestures. You must notice when micro-aggressions happen, and if you miss it and someone points it out to you, do not dismiss the concern. Ask about it, find out why it’s so insulting, demeaning, why the action or words are symbols of racism and bigotry. --- Desiree Adaway is a consultant, trainer, coach and speaker building resilient, equitable, and inclusive organizations. She holds a vision for people’s lives, workplaces and communities until they can hold it for themselves. Since the late 1990s, the Indian community in Australia has grown faster than any other immigrant community. The Indian Diaspora has made substantial contributions to the multi-ethnic and multi-religious diversity within Australia. The growth of Hinduism and Sikhism through gurus, temples, yoga and rituals of many kind has brought new colours, images, customs and practices to the profile of Australian religion, and the Australian landscape more widely. At the same time, Hinduism and Sikhism have themselves been transformed as Hindus and Sikhs from different parts of India as well as Fiji, Malaysia and other parts of the world have come together to establish a pan-Indian ethos. Hindus and Sikhs here have also interacted with other sectors of the Australian population and with religions from the Western world. This is the theme of The Indian Diaspora: Hindus and Sikhs in Australia (Manticore Press, 2019). The Indian Diaspora covers the theory of diaspora, the historical development of the Indian communities in Australia since the late 19th century to the present times, current practices and statistical profiles of Hindus and Sikhs in Australia, and interactions between Hindus and Sikhs with the wider Australian community. There are case-studies of the Indian students and women in the Australian community, of Indian communities in Melbourne and South Australia, and of temple building and the Sikh gurdwara. The book has been edited by and contains contributions from Purushottama Bilimoria, an internationally-known scholar of philosophy and religion, Jayant Bhalchandra Bapat, one of Australia s most senior Hindu priests and a scholar of Hinduism, and Philip Hughes, a leading analyst of the religious profiles of the Australian people. It also contains contributions from several other prominent scholars. Included are special essays on the importance of diaspora by the late Ninian Smart and on the 19th century Afghan cameleers and Indian hawkers. Learn more about your ad choices. Curiosity. Intelligence. Compassion. Ambition. These are the words that popped into my head the first time I met Kristin Sherry. We spoke about how she started with the development of her hugely successful YouMap book and program, and I knew I was in the company of someone incredibly thoughtful, who was inspired to truly guide people to find their best fit in life and career. "People's lives are largely a product of the decisions they make." The theme throughout this conversation is self-reflection. When we understand ourselves, and can reflect on how we're showing up to the people and environment around us, we can make decisions in alignment with our ideals, our ideal vision of who we want to be and how we want to be. We spoke about assessment tools like CliftonStrengths (StrengthsFinder), DiSC, Enneagram, and Kristen's tool, YouMap, and how the results can help us identify the most natural, instinctive ways our brains work. Which, surprisingly enough, is complicated. There isn't one all-inclusive, perfect tool to describe who we are, how we think, what motivates us, and what choices we make every day. Not only are we complicated beings with far too many neural connections made in our incredible brains, add to that complexity the fact that we are constantly changing, adjusting our views through experiences and stimulants. I love the way Kristin thinks about these things, the way she sees people in a multi-dimensional way, not flat, and she uses her vision to guide people to make choices that will eventually bring them to their best environments and roles so they can contribute beauty and competence to their communities, no matter where they sit. --- Learn more about Kristin by visiting her website, order her recently published children's book, You've Got Gifts! and be sure to preorder her new self-development book, Maximize 365: A year of actionable tips to transform your life. --- About Sarah: In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I’ve realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don’t realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they’re sharing them with. The audiobook, Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.
Guided or DIY elk hunts? A question we have been getting a lot these days. Many hunters planning their upcoming hunts, especially first timers, are weighing whether they should hunt DIY or consider hiring a guide:"What strengths does a guide bring to a hunt that I couldn't?""Would I learn more from a guide?""Will I have more success?""Can I afford it?""Can I get a guide on public land?""What do you recommend?"On Today’s Edition of Blue Collar Elk Hunting, your elk hunting coaches talk the pros & cons of guided vs DIY elk hunts. Included in the discussion is how not all guided or "do it yourself" hunts look alike and the variables that can bring the two closer in some ways as well as put them on the opposite ends of the scale in others. It's a great topic and one where your coaches have plenty of experience on both sides of the fence. Hope you enjoy the episode. This moment in 2020 can feel very chaotic and full of fear, and we can become trapped in the search for certainty. Motorists could be charged $3.50 to drive through Auckland's central city during peak hours. A joint government - Auckland Council report says there's a strong case for congestion charging in the city, but the main problem's likely to be push back from the government. Included in the shortlist of five charging options is one that would ping motorists for driving into the city centre along with strategic corridors including main motorways. A new law would be needed for any tolling regime. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff talks to Lisa Owen about the proposal.

Sponsored by us! Support our work through: Our courses at Talk Python Training Test & Code Podcast Patreon Supporters Michael #1: Running Python on .NET 5 by Anthony Shaw Talked about pyjion way back when on episode 49 with Brett Cannon. .NET 5 was released on November 10, 2020. It is the cross-platform and open-source replacement of the .NET Core project and the .NET project that ran exclusively on Windows since the late 90’s. See the conference about it if you want to go deeper. Performance: I just saw a SO post about someone complaining their Python was 31x slower than C#. The most common way around this performance barrier is to compile Python extensions from C or using something like Cython. .NET 5 CLR comes bundled with a performant JIT compiler (codenamed RyuJIT) that will compile .NETs IL into native machine instructions on Intel x86, x86-64, and ARM CPU architectures. Pyjion is a project to replace the core execution loop of CPython by transpiling CPython bytecode to ECMA CIL and then using the .NET 5 CLR to compile that into machine code. It then executes the machine-code compiled JIT frames at runtime instead of using the native execution loop of CPython. A few releases of Python ago (CPython specifically, the most commonly used version of Python) in 3.7 a new API was added to be able to swap out “frame execution” with a replacement implementation. This is otherwise known as PEP 523. This extension uses the same standard library as Python 3.9. Will this be compatible with my existing Python code? What about C Extensions? The short answer is- if your existing Python code runs on CPython 3.9 – yes it will be compatible. Tested against the full CPython “test suite” on all platforms. In fact, it was the first JIT ever to pass the test suite. Is this faster? The short answer a little, but not by much (yet). see also: https://twitter.com/anthonypjshaw/status/1328457723608928256?s=20 Brian #2: PEP 621 -- Storing project metadata in pyproject.toml Progress on standardizing what goes into pyproject.toml Authors Brett Cannon, Paul Ganssle, Pradyun Gedam, Sébastien Eustace (of poetry), Thomas Kluyver (of flit), Tzu-Ping Chung Motivators of this PEP are: Encourage users to specify core metadata statically for speed, ease of specification, unambiguity, and deterministic consumption by build back-ends Provide a tool-agnostic way of specifying metadata for ease of learning and transitioning between build back-ends Allow for more code sharing between build back-ends for the "boring parts" of a project's metadata Doesn’t change any existing core metadata Doesn’t attempt to standardize all possible metadata Included in table named [project]: name version description readme requires-python license authors/maintainers keywords classifiers urls entry points dependencies/optional-dependencies dynamic There’s an example in the PEP that helps clear things up Many items have synonyms specified for flit/poetry/setuptools (presumably for backward compatibility) Michael #3: GitHub revamps copyright takedown policy after restoring YouTube-dl In October following a DMCA complaint from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) it was taken down at GitHub. Citing a letter from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (the EFF), GitHub says it ultimately found that the RIAA’s complaint didn’t have any merit. The RIAA argued the tool ran afoul of section 1201 of the US copyright law by giving people the means to circumvent YouTube’s DRM. the EFF dissects the RIAA’s claims, highlighting where the organization had either misinterpreted the law or how the code of YouTube-dl works. “Importantly, YouTube-dl does not decrypt video streams that are encrypted with commercial DRM technologies, such as Widevine, that are used by subscription videos sites, such as Netflix,” the organization points out when it comes to the RIAA’s primary claim. GitHub is implementing new policies to avoid a repeat of a repeat situation moving forward. First, it says a team of both technical and legal experts will manually evaluate every single section 1201 claim. If the company’s technical and legal teams ultimately find any issues with a project, GitHub will give its owners the chance to address those problems before it takes down their work. GitHub is establishing a $1 million legal defense fund for developers. Sidebar: EFF has just launched How to Fix the Internet, a new podcast mini-series that examines potential solutions to six ills facing the modern digital landscape. Brian #4: Install & Configure MongoDB on the Raspberry Pi Mark Smith Definitely a “wow, I didn’t know you could do that” article. Tutorial walks through Installing 64 bit Ubuntu Server on a Raspberry Pi Configure wifi Install MongoDB on Pi Set up a user account, to safely expose MongoDB on a home network. Now you’ve got a MongoDB server in your house. So cool Michael #5: Extra! extra! extra!, hear all about it! Follow up on my critique of things like SQL & CSS put next to Python and Java. Maybe best to grab the conversation from here. Guido joins Microsoft, why? People seem to see this as a positive for sure. But they checked him out! New code editor roaming the streets: Nova from Panic. Two thumbs up on Big Sur and now waiting on the Mac Mini M1. Brian #6: A Python driven AI Stylist Inspired by Social Media Dale Markowitz A bunch of Google tools (cloud storage, firebase, cloud vision api, product search api) Some React for front end Python to batch script General oversimplified process: photos from social media for inspiration photos of everything in your closet, multiple of each item use AI suggest outfits from your closet that match inspiration photos Ok. The process is really more of a promo for Google AI products, and not so much about Python, but it’s a cool “look what you can do with software” kinda thing. Also, many of the tools used by online retail, like “similar products” and such, are available to lots of people now, and that’s cool. Joke: Back to the [dev] future!

Waders are great until they aren't. It is no fun to be wet when you're not expecting to be wet. That means waders need to be functioning at 100%. If you're fishing in cold weather or cold water, 95% is no good. In this episode I talk about end-of-season wader care. Included in that is inspecting, cleaning, and repair. I also share some of my preferred wader repair products and methods. Lastly, I do offer up some advice on buying waders. This is a relatively shallow dive into a deep topic, but it should be a helpful starting point.
