Thousands march for abortion rights across the nation… A devastating oil spill threatens wildlife… and the president's frustration..
Monday 28 September is International Safe Abortion Day and our hard-working, very tired friends at Alliance 4 Choice got in touch to let us know that while the usual March For Choice can’t happen this year because pandemic, they’ve got some activities lined up over the weekend to celebrate it. It seemed the perfect opportunity to have a catch up about where abortion rights are at in Northern Ireland, with our neighbours in Ireland, and in Gibraltar, Malta and Poland. And so, we’re talking to Danielle Roberts of Northern Ireland’s Alliance For Choice, Anna Carnegie of Ireland’s Abortion Rights Campaign, Selena Victory of No More Shame and Gibraltar For Yes, and – of course! – the powerhouse that is Abortion Support Network’s Mara Clarke.Happy International Safe Abortion Day! Let’s make bodily autonomy something that every woman can celebrate. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this week's episode, Mick and Hannah take a trip to Dublin to join the March For Choice and find out what's been going on since the #Repealthe8th referendum back in May, where they natter with a few familiar voices, as well as make some new friends. Mick has a chat with host of the Wanna Be podcast and CEO of the Shoutout Network, Imriel Morgan, to find out why Black History Month is so important and how everyone can and should celebrate it. The team catch up with poetry anthologist Ana Sampson about her book, She Is Fierce, ahead of World Poetry Day on October 4, and Jen talks bare-knuckle brawling with playwright Joy Wilkinson, who looked into the boxing world for her play The Sweet Science of Bruising. In this episode, Roisin Ingle talks to Sarah Monaghan from the Abortion Rights Campaign about the 7th ARC March for Choice which is taking place at 2pm Saturday 29th of September in Dublin. Why are we still marching? Monaghan explains that as well as a celebration the march signifies the work still to be done in ensuring the legislation ensures as wide as possible access for girls, women and people who need abortion services. Also in this episode, Roisin meets Charlotte Tilbury the woman behind the internationally successful make-up brand. She talks about why cosmetics give women confidence and explains the “lipstick index”. Tilbury was speaking at the Brown Thomas Style Summit and listeners to the podcast can win tickets to similar events by emailing thewomenspodcast@irishtimes.com

Moone Boy and Nowhere Fast‘s Clare Monnelly joins us to talk about Animaniacs. We love Animaniacs a whole lot so it was an extreme pleasure to geek out about it for fifty minutes with our new best friend Clare. We talked about getting meta jokes as a child, the hidden filthy jokes, Pinky And The Brain, Good Idea Bad Idea, Chicken Boo, Slappy Squirrel, Hello Nurse, and all the gang. We also talked about just how impressive Rob Paulsen’s rendition of Yakko’s World is, being scared of Ren & Stimpy, renting games from Xtra-Vision, and the Commodore 64. Illustrator Fatti Burke of Irelandopedia, Historopedia, and soon Foclóiropedia joined us to talk about 1968’s Oliver! and all things Oliveresque. We like to wander off topic here at Juvenalia and we really wandered far and wide on this one. We can practically guarantee that this is the only Oliver! podcast that’s also about Alan’s old music teacher, good supermarkets, Babycham, and watching people eat crows. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Bye x Hey, why not subscribe to Juvenalia and leave a review or even a rating, we’d appreciate it. It’s time for another chapter of RL Stine’s Beach Party. When we last saw Karen and Anne-Marie they were being menaced by Vince and his gang of tough boys. But who’s this? I’ll tell you who’s this. It’s Gerry and Marty, two OTHER boys who have Karen and Anne-Marie’s best interests at heart. This chapter also features an immersive trip to a teen hangout, intrigue, lies, and a tight, form-fitting poncho. We’ll be back with a real episode next week. Bye! Hey, why not subscribe to Juvenalia and leave a review or even a rating, we’d appreciate it. Don’t forget about Juvenalia LIVE in the Tivoli Theatre, September 27th as part of the Dublin Podcast Festival by HeadStuff and Aiken Promotions. Did you know that a lot of the 1987 series was animated in Dublin? Gareth did. Gareth knows a lot about those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He was happy to share it with us. (CW: There’s a bit near the end of the chapter where some boys get a bit sexually menacing; nothing graphic or physical but we’d prefer if you knew in advance if that’s something you need to know) It’s been over a year but Ellen and Alan finally remembered to bring their copies of RL Stine’s Beach Party to a Juvenalia recording so here’s a semi-dramatic reading of chapter two. Chapter three will follow in two weeks and sure we’ll see after that. Don’t forget about Juvenalia LIVE in the Tivoli Theatre, September 27th as part of the Dublin Podcast Festival by HeadStuff and Aiken Promotions. Actor, Comedian, and Writer Peter McGann joins Alan and Ellen to talk about the first Pierce Brosnan Bond movie, 1995’s GoldenEye. You might know Peter better as his unsettling alter-ego Liam Nugent or from the Republic of Telly. Today, however, he’s here as our pal who knows a lot about James Bond. Ellen watched GoldenEye for the first time for this podcast. Alan watched it for the second time. Everybody had a lot of opinions about it. We had a very nice time and we hope you will too. You can see Peter in The Liam Nugent Variety Hour on August 11th in Brewery Corner, Kilkenny as part of the Alternative Kilkenny Arts festival. Important news: we’re taking Juvenalia to the people! Hannah Mamalis is an actress, writer, and comedian. You probably know her from loads of stuff like various Dreamgun sketches, live shows, and podcasts or maybe from her Comedy Brunch which has appeared at Smock Alley and the Body & Soul Festival. You’ll definitely know her soon from her role in the upcoming film The Drummer and The Keeper, her appearances at the Vodafone Comedy Festival, and her one-woman show The Egg Is A Lonely Hunter which is running at the Dublin Fringe Festival from Sep 13-17. That was a very long intro but Hannah’s very busy and we like her. Hannah joined Alan and Ellen to talk about Disney’s Fantasia (1940). which has intersected with her life in all kinds of extremely interesting ways. Trust me, you’ll want to listen to this one.
