A (relatively) in-depth analysis of unique English singer-songwriter Julia Fordham in (just over) fifteen minutes.Fordham's professional career started in the early 1980s, when she was known as Jules Fordham, singing backing vocals for Mari Wilson and Kim Wilde. In 1988, she released her first album on Circa Records. Her second album, Porcelain, followed in 1989. It was Fordham's only album to chart on the US top 100. In 2014, Fordham, now based in California, returned to the UK to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Porcelain. She performed the album in its entirety, accompanied by her long-time pianist and producer Grant Mitchell. The tour concluded at the Tivoli Theatre in my home town, Wimborne. From 2018-19, Fordham toured with Beverley Craven and Judie Tzuke (Tzuke is also featured in this podcast series). The three artists also released an album 'Woman to Woman' to coincide with the tour. In 2019 Fordham released the album Magic, written for and dedicated to her daughter Marley. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. In this episode, the FAQ is: How can I take a walking tour when I arrive in a city? . Today's Destination is: Chattanooga, Tennessee Today's Misstep- Getting stopped by TSA security Travel Advice: Plan for the unexpected FAQ: How can I get the walking tour when I get to a city? Response: A guided walking tour of a city is a treat for a solo traveler, especially for a woman who is interested in its history. The more popular ones are through platforms like Viator, TripAdvisor, Airbnb, and FreeWalkingtoursbylocals.com, but there are many ways to score a tour from someone who truly cares about the experience for you. Be sure to read the reviews and book in advance during a busy season. Some are free, and suggest a tip at the end if you liked it. Your hotel could also gook you a tour. The Visitor Center or Tourism office can also give you guidance on this. You may also find a walking tour app for a self-guided tour, with maps and points of interest. You can GPS my city or check Detour. I found some walking tours on YouTube that were pretty fun to watch also. https://freewalkingtoursbylocals.com/ Today's destination: Chattanooga, Tennessee My first visit here was in 1974, on a bus of young women heading to Florida. It was called Junior Trip. We were 80 women, two bus loads. I remember very little about Chattanooga from that visit. I returned to see it in 2024, which made a more significant impression. This time, I was visiting the future Dr. Travelbest, who lives there now. We are currently working on a Planner for travel guidance, so look for that in the future. It's a central travel hub, especially for the railroads. A bridge crosses the railroad tracks, which are dozens of tracks wide. It may be one of the largest railroad hubs that I have experienced. You can see the city and the Moccasin Bend from the infamous Lookout Mountain. Listen to the episode on Chickamauga to learn about President Abraham Lincoln's campaign to gain control of the South in the 1860s. It was a place of both Confederate and Union victories. https://www.visitchattanooga.com/things-to-do/ https://www.visitchattanooga.com/plan/transportation/ The Zoo was a highlight, with a giraffe named George gladly accepting lunch from my hands to his 18-inch tongue. It seems that George loves romaine lettuce. Who would have guessed that? That experience was a treat. Kids like it, too. An assortment of other animals makes for a few hours of seeing wildlife at the Chattanooga Zoo. Walk across the Pedestrian Bridge and the riverfront along the Tennessee River to get a flavor of the city. I walked the bridge at night, and it was a sparkling river with no watercraft because the weather was rainy and threatened winds. The Northshore District has trendy boutiques, galleries, and food choices; you can walk everywhere. You can also learn much about the Civil War from an organized guided walking tour of the area. I did get to see the historic train station, the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Parts of the terminal building were recently sold, so check the show notes for the latest. https://www.local3news.com/local-news/preserve-chattanooga-sells-part-of-chattanooga-choo-choo-complex/article_a8d7781e-dbe5-11ee-abba-0b98f22b8f70.html I also enjoyed Ruby Falls and will create a special episode about that destination soon. On my next visit, I plan to Explore the Tennessee Aquarium and dive into the fascinating world of marine life at one of the top-rated aquariums in the country. From river otters to penguins, the Tennessee Aquarium showcases various aquatic animals. I did a few hikes on this trip, but most of the days, it rained, so I will return and hike more. Chattanooga is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. You can go hiking on nearby trails like Stringers Ridge or Raccoon Mountain or try rock climbing at the Tennessee Wall, if you have that talent, or just go and watch the climbers. Next time I come, I may also Attend a Performance at the Tivoli Theatre: Catch a show at the beautifully restored Tivoli Theatre, which hosts concerts, Broadway shows, and ballets. My last item on the next time list is to Relax at Coolidge Park: Spend a leisurely afternoon at Coolidge Park, located along the riverfront. Picnic in the grass, ride the antique carousel, or simply enjoy the scenic views. Today's Misstep- Getting stopped by TSA security How did I know that carrying a squash in my bag would keep me from getting through security the first time? It took an extra five minutes to get my bag checked. And then I did it again. I brought a squash on a second trip, and TSA stopped me for a short while Next time, don't bring fresh squash on the trip in your carry on. Today's Travel Advice- Plan for the unexpected. There's no such thing as being fully prepared, so prepare for what could happen, and in your mind how you may deal with that. Marc chats with comedian Rachel Parris ahead of her tour shows in Scotland at the beginning of May. Star of The Mash Report (and the videos from it which went viral online), Rachel discusses becoming known for something that's not completely reflective of her stand-up, what it was like when she took over as host during the ill-fated weeks where Liz Truss became Prime Minister and the Queen died, and explains why she's not a fan of the phrase "Be Kind". Plus, Rachel reflects on her experience of appearing on panel shows (not to mention judging a competition won by a certain Mr Buchanan), how she deals with the "teacher vibe" perception people have of her, and how she finds being in a relationship with fellow comic Marcus Brigstocke makes navigating the life of a performer more manageable. As Chicago's Gene Siskel Film Center concluded its recent "Daddy Issues" series, Ian and David made the trek downtown to catch Peter Weir's 1986 drama, The Mosquito Coast, on the big screen.Projected in gloriously scratchy 35MM, the film tells the story of Allie Fox (Harrison Ford), a disgruntled American dad and genius inventor, who moves his family to the titular under-developed Central American territory. There, he battles the elements, a zealous missionary, and the pull of consumer-culture comforts drawing his wife and kids back home.In this pseudo-spoilery discussion, the guys examine where this oddity fits into Ford's blockbuster career; its harsh critical reception; and why it belongs in the wider discussion of expertly written, performed, and directed dramas.Note: This episode does not contain a review of the 2021 Apple TV+ show, also based on Paul Theroux's novel ('cause at least one of the panelists hasn't seen it!).Show LinksWatch the Mosquito Coast trailer.Read Roger Ebert's Mosquito Coast review from 1986 (referenced in the show).Keep up with David Fowlie's film criticism at Keeping It Reel.Join David for his regular film discussion series, presented by the After Hours Film Society. The AHFS screenings take place at the historic Tivoli Theatre in downtown Downers Grove, IL.Visit the Gene Siskel Film Center's website for info on upcoming films and film series.Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!
This week's entry to the Local Selection Mix Series welcomes esteemed Subject resident Niall Cleary. The massively talented and ever-consistent DJ has put forward a sensational mix featuring 57 tracks with a host of Irish and international talent throughout. Niall has been a key cog in the Dublin techno machine since the early 2000s when nights like Electric City and venues such as Redbox and the old Tivoli Theatre were in their prime. A student of the fast, loop-driven techno from the late 90s, and early 2000s eras, his sets are high energy, full of fast transitions and expert blends. Since late 2009, Niall has been a resident DJ with the renowned Subject events, playing alongside some of the biggest names in house, techno, and electro, as well as appearances at clubs and festivals such as District 8, Index, Twisted Pepper, Life, and Electric Picnic. Niall also holds a residency on Dublin Digital Radio where he plays alongside Mutate Events who host a bi-monthly techno show on Thursday nights where they focus on showcasing emerging and already-established Irish artists. Having played alongside techno stalwarts Dave Clarke, Paula Temple, Surgeon, DJ Bone, Jeff Mills, DVS1, Juan Atkins, Karenn, and more, Niall's pedigree in providing a classy warm-up set is frankly second to none. Niall's skill behind a pair of turntables is not restricted to serving up the starters, as he's been frequently found dishing out peak-time tools at numerous Irish festivals including Life Festival, Electric Picnic, and more. Niall's entry to the Local Selection features a range of brilliant artists that include SHDW & Obscure Shape, Alarico, Truncate, Lars Huismann, Tommy Holohan, Doug Cooney, Aero, Mode_1, Slam, Casper Hastings, and more throughout and just coming in at just over 2 hours in length. Making for a thoroughly enjoyable techno workout. Sorted. From Japanese and American Southern roots, Grace has a taste for many cultures. And though she be little, standing at a whopping 4'10.5 (the half makes a big difference), she be fierce. She began dancing at 3, doing voice overs for radio and acting by 5 and became enthralled in storytelling and drama. Before graduating high school, she had already hosted several shows for a travel series, announced on air for FRIDAYS on Cartoon Network, became an award-winning mime, and failed algebra three times. Grace is the reigning Miss North Georgia Agricultural Fair Queen because upon her crowning, she was promised a funnel cake. Moving from her hometown of Dalton, GA to Chattanooga, TN, Grace became a choreographer and marketing director for a regional theatre company. Following her win for Best Actress Award for her role as Princess Fiona in Shrek (at the historic Tivoli Theatre), Grace moved to NYC. She graduated from Upright Citizen's Brigade and The Barrow Group's respective performing programs. It was under the training of Seth Barrish (Mike Birbiglia's The New One) that she developed a solo play entitled ‘To Free a Mockingbird.' As a comedian, she hosts the comedy show “SWEET MEAT.” She is the host of the storytelling podcast ‘Tell me on a Sunday', and a daily Broadway News correspondent for Broadway Radio. Grace is the Marketing Strategist for the Grammy Award Winning Record Label, Broadway Records. As a visual artist, she sells her watercolor and ink prints on Etsy and in retail establishments across the US. When she's not doing all that, she feeds her cat. Website: graceaki.com/
Another spiritual segment! This time Daniel shares one of the most powerful techniques a person can have. Useful in ghost investigation to tune your ability to read the space. Feeling deeply if ghostly energy enters a room. Maybe even reading the ghost's emotion. Then he returns to the subject of Canada's most famous disappearance, Ambrose Small. Was his skeleton found in Hamilton? Yes… if you believe the story from the old Tivoli Theatre in the 90's. --- email us at ggdaniel@ghostwalks.com like us @theghostwalks (FB, IG, YouTube)

Jay began DJing at ripe age of 16 and by 18 he was asked to be resident at Disco Nouveau, a long running underground club night in his hometown of Mullingar. Fast forward a couple of years and he was invited to be resident at Twelfth Planet until he decided to begin his own journey as an independent promoter. With a career spanning well over a deacde Jay has graced some of Irelands most iconic venues such as; Tripod, The Tivoli Theatre, The Twisted Pepper and more. The Twisted Pepper (now Wigwam) has been home to many of Jay's show's and provided cathartic techno experiences for many punters. Since 2013 Mutate Events has been focused on bringing quality techno to Dublin with such artists as; Jeroen Search, Roman Lindau, Lewis Fautzi, Stefan Vincent, Abstract Division, Tensal, Abdulla Rashim, Tripeo, Mama Snake, Volvox, Amotik, Jamaica Suk, Rune Bagge, Héctor Oaks, Silent Servant, UVB, Charlton, RIVET along with many, many more. You get the jist…Jay most definitely knows what he's at. Working alongside and garnering support from some of the longest running nights Ireland has to offer such as Jamie Behan's Bastardo Electrico, Subject, Life Festival & Research, he has given his all to promoting a vibrant underground scene for the capital. He has a bi-weekly radio show on Ireland's number one online radio station, alongside his residents, UNTHINK, Corner, Exit the Void & Niall Cleary on Dublin Digital Radio, where he showcases the best upcoming talent Ireland's techno scene has to offer. This mix offers a slice of what Jay is all about, an ensemble of techno of various sorts rolled into a warped two hour trip. Jay made a point of playing unreleased music from various Irish producers including Aero, Fyun, David O'neil, Offtrack and more. A smooth yet carnivorous trip around Jay's back catalogue leaves the listener on the edge of their seat, unsure of what gnarly turn the mix might take next. This is the techno equivalent of a page turner novel.

We did the math. It's not that far. Think about it this way, if you lived in Greenwood (Indiana), you'd probably not hesitate to drive to downtown Indianapolis to do something, right? This is the same distance. What are we talking about? Driving to Spencer, Indiana (just west of Bloomington a few miles) to check out one of their special places (and save money, too!). Spencer is home to the Historic Tivoli Theatre and in this episode of At Home in Bloomington, we talk with Andrea and Rob White (and baby Charlotte) and Jane Rubeck, all integral members of the Tivoli community, helping keep the history alive while creating a community gathering place featuring theater, music and $5 first run movies. $5? Really! And only $3 for a soda and popcorn! (and free movies on Thursday nights). And so much more! Not to mention a great restoration story full of bird infestations, massive foundation replacement, maybe some ghosts and replicating the stars in the sky in 1928 Check it out! While you are thinking about Owen County, tune into our throwback episode, #45 with Uplands PEAK Sanctuary. We talk about all the important work the Sanctuary is doing and also touch on quite a bit of Owen County history! Hello there. Our first live show at the Dublin Podcast Festival is less than a week away and we just want to make sure that you know about it. If you want to know why it took us eight minutes to tell you that our guest is Maria Doyle Kennedy, she’ll be talking about The Wizard Of Oz, and it’s in the Workman’s Club* on September 27th on a double-bill with The Alison Spittle Show then you’ll just have to listen. Tickets are on sale now. Hopefully we’ll see you there. We’ll have badges. You can probably have a badge if you come but we don’t have enough badges for everybody because we’re PROFESSIONALS. *The venue has changed from Tivoli Theatre to The Workman’s Club due to unforeseen circumstances. Juvenalia is sponsored by the March For Choice which leaves from the Garden Of Remembrance, Dublin at 2pm, September 30th. Repeal The 8th. Octocon chairperson Jan Ní Shúilleabháin joined us to talk about her love of Frank Herbert’s Dune in all its forms especially the 1984 David Lynch movie. She basically gave us a crash course in sci-fi appreciation and her enthusiasm was infectious. Jan also told us a bit about the history of Irish cons and about her role in the upcoming Octocon which takes place on the 6th, 7th, and 8th of October in the Camden Court Hotel, Dublin 2. Hey, why not subscribe to Juvenalia and leave a review or even a rating, we’d appreciate it. We’re doing our first live show with super special guest Maria Doyle Kennedy of Orphan Black, Sing Street, the Commitments, and a gazillion other things. It’s a double-bill with The Alison Spittle Show in the Tivoli Theatre on September 27th as part of the Dublin Podcast festival and we’d love to see you there. Illustrator Fatti Burke of Irelandopedia, Historopedia, and soon Foclóiropedia joined us to talk about 1968’s Oliver! and all things Oliveresque. We like to wander off topic here at Juvenalia and we really wandered far and wide on this one. We can practically guarantee that this is the only Oliver! podcast that’s also about Alan’s old music teacher, good supermarkets, Babycham, and watching people eat crows. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Bye x Hey, why not subscribe to Juvenalia and leave a review or even a rating, we’d appreciate it. It’s time for another chapter of RL Stine’s Beach Party. When we last saw Karen and Anne-Marie they were being menaced by Vince and his gang of tough boys. But who’s this? I’ll tell you who’s this. It’s Gerry and Marty, two OTHER boys who have Karen and Anne-Marie’s best interests at heart. This chapter also features an immersive trip to a teen hangout, intrigue, lies, and a tight, form-fitting poncho. We’ll be back with a real episode next week. Bye! Hey, why not subscribe to Juvenalia and leave a review or even a rating, we’d appreciate it. Don’t forget about Juvenalia LIVE in the Tivoli Theatre, September 27th as part of the Dublin Podcast Festival by HeadStuff and Aiken Promotions. We’re sharing a bill with The Alison Spittle Show with Alison obviously being the main event what with her being famous and popular and everything. Anyway, tickets are on sale NOW and we want to see you there. We’ll announce our guest for the night soon-ish. Animator Gareth Lyons joins Alan and Ellen to talk about as many of the incarnations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as they can in an hour. We talk comics, the 1987 cartoon, the 1990 movie, the 2003 series, the 2014 movie, the 2012 series, the action figures, everything basically. Did you know that a lot of the 1987 series was animated in Dublin? Gareth did. Gareth knows a lot about those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He was happy to share it with us. Gareth animated and directed the upcoming RTÉ series Ends Meet which will be airing this autumn and he’s also running the alternative animation festival HACKfest which is on Aug 26th in A4 Sounds. The TMNT documentary Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is on Netflix Hey, why not subscribe to Juvenalia and leave a review or even a rating, we’d appreciate it. (CW: There’s a bit near the end of the chapter where some boys get a bit sexually menacing; nothing graphic or physical but we’d prefer if you knew in advance if that’s something you need to know) It’s been over a year but Ellen and Alan finally remembered to bring their copies of RL Stine’s Beach Party to a Juvenalia recording so here’s a semi-dramatic reading of chapter two. Chapter three will follow in two weeks and sure we’ll see after that. Don’t forget about Juvenalia LIVE in the Tivoli Theatre, September 27th as part of the Dublin Podcast Festival by HeadStuff and Aiken Promotions. Actor, Comedian, and Writer Peter McGann joins Alan and Ellen to talk about the first Pierce Brosnan Bond movie, 1995’s GoldenEye. You might know Peter better as his unsettling alter-ego Liam Nugent or from the Republic of Telly. Today, however, he’s here as our pal who knows a lot about James Bond. Ellen watched GoldenEye for the first time for this podcast. Alan watched it for the second time. Everybody had a lot of opinions about it. We had a very nice time and we hope you will too. You can see Peter in The Liam Nugent Variety Hour on August 11th in Brewery Corner, Kilkenny as part of the Alternative Kilkenny Arts festival. Important news: we’re taking Juvenalia to the people!
