JJ and Tucker break down the origins of TMNT as a gritty comic parody, how it was sanitized into a cartoon juggernaut, and why the toys, arcade games, movies, and NES ports still matter. Along the way, they revisit formative childhood memories, rank Turtle video games, defend the Jim Henson live-action films, and unpack why the first movie still holds up.

As far as mantras go, Street Sharks have one about as good as they come. They fight. They bite. They stand for everything right. You can read it on the opening page of each issue of the IDW Publishing series, and as we discuss with writer Stephanie Williams this week, given everything going on in the world, it's worth repeating every time you crack open the comic. Street Sharks may have begun as a cash grab in the wake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' success. However, under Stephanie Williams' direction, in collaboration with artist Ariel Medel, the comic book series distinguishes itself by embracing the Bolton brothers' chill attitude amid abject horror. They're Supergirl to TMNT's Superman. They lived a life before their Krypton exploded. They know what they lost, they lived what they lost, and they still choose to direct their jawesome chompers toward villainy. It's pure superhero comics. You might be thinking, what the Big Slammu are you talking about? Well, you just have to dig into this week's episode to appreciate the comparison truly. We're getting deep with Street Sharks this podcast, discussing community, reluctant heroism, and mob mentality with Stephanie Williams. Two weeks ago, our co-host Lisa didn't know a thing about Street Sharks, but as of today, she's INVESTED. The first four issues of Street Sharks are now available from IDW Publishing. The fifth issue, concluding the first arc, swims into comic shops on February 18th. Street Sharks is written by Stephanie Williams, illustrated by Ariel Medel, colored by Valentina Pinto, and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry. Also, follow Stephanie Williams on Bluesky, Instagram, and her website. This Week's Sponsors This February, Dave Stevens's The Rocketeer soars again in a brand-new story written by John Layman, the genius behind the foodie cannibal detective series Chew, and illustrated by Jacob Edgar, who drew Plastic Man: No More and has a very cool J. Bone/Darwyn Cooke style. The new series is called The Rocketeer: The Island. Our skybound hero, Cliff Secord, leads a dangerous search and rescue mission. Who's he looking for? None other than Amelia Earhart! The first issue crashes into comic book shops on February 25th, courtesy of IDW Publishing. The Future is Calling! 2000 AD is the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, with new issues published every single week! Issue #13 drops a massive bombshell with Ujigami's true identity being Splinter. When you decided to make him the force hunting the Turtles' enemies, what was the emotional core you wanted readers to feel first — shock, tragedy, or inevitability?2. Ujigami isn't just a villain; he's a moral crisis for the Turtles. Was your goal to make this run less about defeating an enemy and more about redefining what justice means for the team?3. In #14, the brothers split up to protect their former enemies from Splinter. That's such a powerful reversal of classic TMNT dynamics — what does this say about how the Turtles have grown since their early days of black-and-white morality?4. You've written a lot about identity and duality in your career. How did that background influence your approach to Splinter becoming Ujigami — a mentor turning into something almost mythic and terrifying?5. Shinigami's introduction brings in mysticism from the 2012 animated series. What made this moment in your run feel right for folding her into IDW continuity, and how did you retool her to fit the tone of your story?6. Your first two issues lean hard into supernatural elements — ninja mythology, death spirits, and destiny. Was that a conscious pivot from recent TMNT runs that focused more on politics and street-level crime?8. You've said the Turtles work in any genre. With Ujigami and Shinigami, you're clearly leaning into horror and dark fantasy — were there specific myths, folktales, or manga influences that shaped this arc?9. You and Freddie E. Williams II are creating some striking, eerie imagery in these issues. How did your collaboration evolve once you realized this arc would live in such a darker, more mystical space?10. With Ujigami revealed and Shinigami now in play, it feels like the table has finally been set for the larger story you and Freddie have planned. Without giving anything away, what should readers be emotionally bracing for as this arc unfolds — heartbreak, redemption, or something even more unexpected?11. If the Turtles had to explain Ujigami to April in the most “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” way possible — full of bad metaphors and half-accurate summaries — which brother would do the worst job, and what would his explanation sound like?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991) was chosen by Patreon supporter Gareth, and it represents a very deliberate shift in tone and approach from the original 1990 film. Following the massive commercial success of the first movie, New Line Cinema moved quickly to produce a sequel that would appeal more directly to younger audiences. This resulted in a noticeably lighter, more comedic production, with strict limitations placed on violence and darker elements after parental groups raised concerns about the original film's intensity. Director Michael Pressman replaced Steve Barron, and the creative mandate was clear: brighter visuals, broader humor, and a more Saturday-morning-cartoon-friendly feel. The production once again relied on Jim Henson's Creature Shop to bring the Turtles to life, though the suits were redesigned to allow for improved mobility and clearer facial expressions. Filming took place primarily in North Carolina, with large soundstage work used to accommodate more elaborate set pieces and controlled environments. The movie also leaned heavily into merchandising synergy, closely aligning its release with toy lines, tie-in products, and promotional partnerships. While critically divisive upon release, The Secret of the Ooze was a significant box-office success and stands as a textbook example of early-90s franchise filmmaking — where commercial considerations, brand management, and audience accessibility increasingly shaped creative decisions. If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryHeroes in a half-shell… are back — and this time, things are about to get oozy. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles return with bigger laughs, louder villains, and a mysterious new substance that could change everything. As old enemies resurface and new threats rise, the Turtles must band together, sharpen their skills, and fight to protect the city they call home.*Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze* — powered up, totally radical, and ready to kick shell.Fun FactsTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II was released at the peak of TMNT mania, when the franchise dominated cartoons, toys, comics, and fast-food promotions worldwide. The film introduced new Turtle allies and villains that were created specifically to expand the movie universe rather than directly adapt comic storylines.Vanilla Ice's song “Ninja Rap” was written exclusively for the movie and became a pop-culture time capsule of early-90s hip-hop crossover marketing. The movie was one of the highest-grossing independent films of 1991, despite receiving mixed critical reviews. Many of the film's stunt performers were professional martial artists, including members of the Hong Kong stunt community. The Turtles' signature weapons appear far less frequently than fans expected, becoming a frequent talking point among viewers. The Secret of the Ooze was heavily promoted through pizza-brand tie-ins, reinforcing the Turtles' long-standing connection to pizza culture.Over time, the film has become a nostalgia favorite for fans who grew up during the early 1990s TMNT boom, often remembered as the “most quotable” entry in the original trilogy.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback
