Bob Cork's Cider Career Bob Cork Bob Cork has 40 years of experience in cider making, starting in 1980. Initially an apprentice engineer, he transitioned to cider making, thanks to his engineering background. He now works as a cider-making consultant, still contributing to the legacy of Showering Cider Mill. The Evolution of Showering Cider Mill and Babycham Entrance to Showering Mill Showering Cider Mill, made an undeniable mark for a perry called Babycham. The mill has evolved over the years, modernizing its equipment while maintaining traditional cider-making techniques. During the production of Babycham, horizontal tanks for producing this widely popular drink. At the time they were laid outside and eventually a buidlign was built around the tanks. The Shepton Mallet Cider Mill is the second largest mill in the UK and over the years it expanded to include a variety of ciders, while continuing to produce Babycham, the popular Fever brand and today a traditional cider called Showering Triple Vintage. The Traditional and Modern Blend: The Triple Vintage Matthew, Daniel, Jonathan Showering and Ria Windcaller The Triple Vintage cider, created by the Showerings blends three vintages to produce a high-quality product. Bob Cork in this episode discusses how it is made using bittersweet and bittersharp apples, fermented with a wee bit of natural yeast and then a cultured yeast. The cider is matured to achieve a balanced, high-quality cider. Key to the cider-making process, is low-temperature fermentation and controlled maturation. Bob Cork's Advice for Aspiring Cider Makers Bob advises aspiring cider makers to approach the craft with passion, as it requires significant investment and a long-term commitment. He emphasizes the importance of a solid business plan and understanding the market's cyclical nature. Despite the challenges, he believes in the future of cider, with increasing consumer interest in high-quality, craft ciders. What do you think of when you think about a pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord? Is it a seamless marriage of hop, malt, yeast and water? Or is it perhaps the pristine vistas offered by the hills and dales of Yorkshire? God's Own Country they call it, modestly. Maybe it's about that duff pint you had in a random Soho pub that tasted of idleness and regret? All three perspectives are valid. There is a lot that goes into the production, consumption and (potentially) enjoyment of this near universally acknowledged and appreciated beer. One that is the second largest cask beer by both volume and value in the United Kingdom, neatly behind the ubiquitous Doom Bar from the Molson Coors-owned Sharp's (which also makes Landlord the largest independently produced cask beer in the UK.) 19 million pints of this pale, Yorkshire bitter are supped, swilled and scoffed at every single year. That's quite a feat, when you think about it. It is these reasons that stimulated our latest long read: A Polyptych of a Pint, by Rachel Hendry. As a feature it is one that came into being thanks to a little bit of serendipity. While Rachel and I were wrapping up the production of an earlier piece she wrote for us on the history of Babycham, at the end of an email she opted to include a couple of sentences that indicated she wished to write about Landlord. By coincidence I had also been sitting on the open offer of a tour at the brewery, and suggested she might like to join me, as research on her yet-to-be feature began in earnest. That tour was led by the current CEO of Timothy Taylor's, Tim Dewey. An ex-spirits man who formerly led marketing at brands like Smirnoff and Drambuie, he's sat in the big chair at Taylor's for over a decade now, and announced his impending retirement earlier this year. More serendipity, then, in that Rachel and I were lucky enough to catch Tim before he started to enjoy a well-earned retirement. In this episode join Rachel Hendry and Matthew Curtis as we chat to Timothy Taylor's CEO Tim Dewey about all things Landlord. Find out why it's one of the most well loved, and indeed, talked about (and argued over) cask beers in the country in this must-listen-to episode of our podcast. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. The Showering name is synonymous with both innovation and tradition in the world of cider for the past 187 years. In this Episode 425 of Cider Chat, Nick Showering shares a bit on his family's cider-making roots that stretch back over 400 years and in the past 180 years in the town of Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England. Nick Showering A Storied Legacy in Somerset The Showerings have been crafting cider in Somerset for nearly two centuries. It all began with a small pub, The Ship Inn, where cider was made and served locally. As generations passed, the family expanded their influence, eventually creating Babycham—a sparkling perry that revolutionized the beverage industry and played a key role in shaping British drinking culture in the 1950s. The playful brand with the signature reindeer brought a fresh, elegant option to women in a male-dominated pub scene. Hello Triple Vintage! Triple Vintage is made with 100% cider apples all grown in Somerset. The featured apple in this cider is Dabinett. Solera, the technique of blending different ferments, in this case three different vintages of high-tannin apples, creates a delectable cider that balances depth of flavor with an elegant finish for the Triple Vintage. Enjoy the Triple Vintage which is sold throughout the UK in fine dining establishments or online (link below) in a large stemmed red wine glass. Serve slightly chilled. The Triple Vintage comes in 375 ML bottles. What's Next for the Showerings? With their sights set on continuing to produce fine cider and Nick Showering clearly enjoying the challenge, time will tell. For now it appears it is all about maintaining a foot in the door of the ever increasing “fine cider” category and the prospects of introducing a new generation of drinkers to the possibilities of high-quality cider…making that very good news for the industry at large. Interview with Cham

Bringin' it Backwards

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 11, 2021 43:08

We had the pleasure of interviewing Cham over Zoom video! Having amassed success spanning over three decades for his pioneering milestones and culturally-shaping achievements in the space of Dancehall, Reggae, Hip Hop, and more, Cham (p.k.a Baby Cham) has crafted an undisputable legacy that remains peerless to the greatest in class. Today the multi Grammy Award-nominated, internationally acclaimed artist unleashes the highly anticipated visual to his fiery single “Lock Down.” Lock Down takes on its masterful flare from the Clockwork Riddim, which is produced by eight-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt. Bolt, in a few short years, has shown that there is nothing off the table for him, and that success follows in every endeavor as long as passion is upheld. WATCH “LOCK DOWN” HERE “Lock Down” find the dancehall legend in his element, spitting fiery, conscious-rooted lyrics over iconic bass-knocking beats made to uplift and rejoice. Cham encapsulates what life has been like in Jamaica for almost two years in a cinematically emotive way, using the extraordinary natives of Jamacia as leading stars for his genius real & raw storytelling.ABOUT CHAM The rich, bass-laced, fast-paced world of dancehall music means only the best of the best survive. Not many can go through a name change and still remain relevant. Many would say that even less can manage to take a break, tour the world and return to the scene to command an audience like never before. Clearly, you've never met the Grammy-nominated dancehall-superstar that is Cham. Having started in the music business by watching artists like John Wayne and Super Cat rehearse on his uncle's Waterhouse-based sound system, Studio Mix, Cham doesn't look at his musical career as a ‘job'. He has all right to, though. With his unmistakable voice and remarkable stage presence, Cham has made his name in dancehall all over the world.  He first emerged on the dancehall kaleidoscope in the mid-1990s, making tracks on various juggling riddims including the immortal Showtime Riddim which spawned his hit Galang Gal. Then, in 2000, under the moniker Baby Cham, gave the world his debut album Wow: The Story, and hits such as Many Many, Boom Tune, Man & Man and more. The formula of Cham's deep baritone voice and rustic, lyrically lethal tracks made sure that he would stake his claim in the annals of music history. While musical naysayers continued yapping about the limited potential of dancehall, Cham's crossover hit Vitamin Sstruck a nerve… with the world. The song was perfect. Vitamin S racked up uncountable hours on disc jock turntables around the world, and led the artiste, whose real name is Damian Beckett, to a deal with Atlantic Records, where he joined fellow Jamaican Sean Paul and American rap stars like Lil' Kim and Fat Joe.  His loyalty to Jamaica and Jamaica's culture never faded, and his goal was always to bring dancehall music to international ears. In fact, Cham can be quoted as saying, many years ago, that he wants Madhouse Productions to be an international household name. It came as no surprise when Cham and Madhouse worked together to produce Ghetto Story, his biggest hit to date. The song hit at the end of 2005, and again, Cham took over the world. The song was a narrative of the rough and rugged life Cham overcame to become the man he is today, through the thick and thin of some of Jamaica's toughest garrison communities and streets.  Having put the song into perspective and silencing all naysayers yet again, Cham went a step further and attracted none other than Alicia Keys to remix the now worldwide hit single. The world waited on bated breath for the release of Ghetto Story's official video, and again the world watched in awe as Cham sent dancehall music to new heights, shattering glass ceilings on the way to the top. But that wasn't the first time Cham's unmistakable style and voice ended up on a track with an international artist. His list of collaborations includes Foxy Brown, M.I.A., Nina Sky, Mario and more. But for Cham, it's not about the accolades and the egos.  Having amassed many more international smash singles over the year such as the high-tempo, club-rocking hits Wine, That Way and Tun Up, Back Way and more places Cham's versatility as an artist on display for the world to see across an array of generations. We want to hear from you! In this episode I have a conversation with Baby Cham. Reggae-Dancehall superstar. He is one of the most commercially successful artist to come out of Jamaica. He has been in the music game since the early 1990s and has sold millions of records. Originally from Sherlock Crescent in Saint Andrew Parish of Jamaica, Cham's career began in the early 1990s. The Miami New Times referred to his debut album Wow... The Story, released in 2000, as "the most anticipated album in years from any reggae artist", and a Washington Post review of a live Cham concert in 2006 described him as "the man who may be the next Sean Paul -- a dancehall artist who crosses over to the U.S. hip-hop market." Throughout his career, Cham has collaborated with many hip hop and R&B artists such as Foxy Brown, Alicia Keys, Carl Thomas, Shawn Mims, Mis-Teeq, Rihanna, Che'Nelle, Jentina, Akon, and T-Pain, Keke Palmer and many others. Cham has for a long time worked with producer Dave Kelly. In 2012, he recorded with his wife, O, on the singles "Wine" and "Tun Up". In 2013 he released the Kelly-produced single "Fighter", featuring Damian "Junior Gong" Marley. Cham's third album, the Kelly-produced Lawless is due to be released in June 2015.[6] Featuring the single "I Am Hot", the album was recorded in Florida apart from a collaboration with Mykal Rose and Bounty Killer, which was recorded in Jamaica. Here in this episode we talk about it all. Remember to subscribe and follow @jrwatkis on twitter and Instagram. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thetopformpodcast/support

Christmas etc. You know the drill. Presents, drunk uncles, wool-based clothing, dry birds, Babycham, an incredible amount of paper based recycling, murders on sitcoms, listening to the music of glam rockers with an uncomfortable feeling that perhaps there are yet more of of these spangly jumpsuited bass playing clowns still to be caught and brought to justice by long running police investigations.....Wow. Everyone loves Christmas, and everyone loves a TKIOF Christmas Special. The TickyOff Boyz are here to upend a sack full of nonsense into your goddamn meatus acusticus externus. That's right, James and Sam are filling up yer ear canals with a dungheap of festive mouth sounds. This week there is weird heavy metal, there are Icelandic people and there is also Sam making a desperate plea for an old friend to get back in touch with him. Meanwhile, James is distracted by his Apple Watch and they both ponder on what to look for in a swinging partner. Then, like a man with God's beard but dressed like an old-timey fireman sneaking down a chimney in the dead of night to leave pagan offerings beneath a dying tree in your front room, comedian Jamie Demetriou arrives and Sam and James turn into (drunk) giggling fanboys. Jamie reveals all about his journey through the world of comedy including the Edinburgh Festival, working with his sister and his series 'Stath Lets Flats'.  He also creates sounds using his vocal cords upon his love for Frank Ocean, his dislike of Morris Dancers and the strange things his father gets up to. Very similarly to a family-size box of Quality Street there's also the coffee cremes of chat, a lot of shouting about soup, a long winded discussion of anti-stomach ulcer medication and James favourite site for long braised, Aga-based pornography... This weeks episode is sponsored by the 'Last Christmas''s of wine dropwine.co.uk and the 'Fairytale Of New York''s of vodka ourvodka.com/ourlondon

Furthermore, to ensure that music lovers continue to support artists and sponsors that drive and support the festival, YOWronto integrates powerful social rewards technology. Michie Mee is known within the music industry for her unique rap style of combining reggae and dancehall with hip-hop. Many successful artists have followed in Michie's footsteps using this gifted technique. With over two decades in the entertainment industry, the Juno nominated rapper and actress is not only an inspiration for female musicians, but also all artists nationwide. Michelle McCullock was born in St. Andrew, Kingston, Jamaica, later relocating to Toronto, Ontario at a young age. While in her mid teens, Michie began crafting her rap style, which quickly gained attention by both Canadian and American rap artists. Michie would also travel frequently from Toronto to New York City giving her more exposure amongst the hip-hop elite. While performing in rap battles, Michie introduced a new formula by being able to switch back and forth between North American English and the Jamaican form of English known as Jamaican Creole or Patois. This daring move would ignite audiences and leave often Michie's rap battle competitors stunned. During a concert in Toronto, fate stepped in and Michie was introduced by Boogie Down Productions to perform on stage. This was a major accomplishment for a young Canadian MC to receive such recognition by a successful New York rap group. Michie would go on to team up with DJ L.A. Luv and form the duo, Michie Mee and L.A. Luv. By the late 1980s, Michie was featured in the Canadian hip-hop compilation Break'n Out, which was produced by B.D.P. members, KRS-ONE and the late Scott La Rock. By the ending of the decade, Michie Mee would make history by signing with First Priority/Atlantic Records, making her the first Canadian rapper to sign with a major record label in the United States. Elements of Style was Michie's first single with L.A. Luv. The single was successful in the U.S. and the duo also appeared on the compilation The First Priority Music Family: Basement Flavor on tracks Victory is Calling and On This Mic. In 1991, Michie released her debut album, Jamaican Funk: Canadian Style, which infused reggae and dancehall elements within the rap album. The hit single, Jamaican Funk, received a Juno Award nomination in 1992. Throughout her career, Michie has opened for many artists including Will Smith, Salt n Pepa, Heavy D, and LL Cool J. She also had the pleasure of touring with Queen Latifah, Audio Two and fellow Canadians, Maestro Fresh Wes and the Dream Warriors. Although she was a powerful force within the hip-hop culture, Michie's musical talents did not stop there. She went on tour with singer Sinead O'Conner and was a founding member of the metal band The Day After, formally called Raggadeath, once again showing her skills as a versatile musician. In 2000, Michie released another album with Koch/E1 titled, The First Cut Is The Deepest, which would bring forth yet another hit single Don't Want To Be Your Slave. The single featured Esthero and earned Michie another Juno nomination. That same year, while promoting her new album, Michie also toured hip-hop super group, Public Enemy. Although Michie has a profound love for music, she has also showcased her talents outside of the music industry. As a member of ACTRA, she has acted in movies and television shows such as Short Circuit 2, Night Heat, La Femme Nikita (CTV), Da Kink In My Hair, Soulfood, and has made a special appearance co-hosting TSN's Off The Record. She was also co-host of Canada's longest running rap radio show, The Powermove Show on CKLN Radio in Toronto. Michie has starred in the groundbreaking hip-hop series Drop The Beat and appeared in the blockbuster In Too Deep starring LL Cool J and Omar Epps, My Baby's Mama with Eddie Griffin and “Chicks With Sticks” featuring Jason Priestly. Michie's vibrant nature in a work environment is frequently noted and she is often asked to host events, which she does on a regular basis. Aside from her life as an entertainer, Michie is also a mother who makes it one of her duties to keep involved with today's youth. Knowing first hand the twists and turns artists often face in entertainment, Michie is an avid supporter of children striving to achieve a good education. Michie herself left university after her music career began to soar and has always spoken openly about the importance of education. Michie Mee has had an outstanding career in entertainment thus far. With her currently working on hot new music, acting roles and a feature in the 2011 CBC hip-hop documentary Love, Props and the T. Dot, this trailblazer's saga still continues. Michie Mee's reign as Queen is far from over. Michie Mee spent some time with us on our show. During our conversation she talked about: – Some of her background including being one of the few Black women involved in the early days of Canadian hip-hop – Why did she go into hip hop instead of reggae – Where did she get her influence to get involved in music – The moment she knew that hip hop would be her journey and the memory of a show in Jamaica – What has her musical journey taught her – Advance for women of color who want to get involved in music – How has the music industry changed during her journey You can connect with Michie Mee via: Website Twitter YouTube Instagram Soundcloud Facebook Michie Mee is scheduled to appear at the YOWronto Music Festival on July 1, 2017 at 6 p.m. Eastern. The Finders Keepers radio renegades gather once again to bring you a special edition satellite show, custom orchestrated to celebrate the return to our screens of the longest-running annual international TV song competition aka Eurovision. Yes, that's right, the outer national psychedelic librarians behind one of the most alternative outer national record labels on the pear-shaped planet are here to prove that the genre that we've loosely termed as B-Music exists in all corners of the vinyl vault and even the most hell-bent ambitious entrants for the kitschiest competition show in Europe have bones in the closet, irons in the fire and bats in the belfry - all of which crop up on Eurovison single B-Sides, previous precocious pressings or post mic-battle bounce backs. If we're not making ourselves clear here, lets just clarify. Outside of the competition these Eurovisionaries also made some pretty good synthy, fuzzy, drum heavy records when left to their own devices and Finders Keepers Radio is here to prove it. So sit back in your favourite chair, pour yourself a Babycham, light up that dangerous fondue oil and marvel as we bring you resilient rock follies from the likes of Greece, Turkey, Belgium, Luxembourg etc. while trying not to count the amount of times we use the phrases "You Were Robbed" and "Repeat Offender" safe in the knowledge that we're already panning next years follow up show every time we hit foreign thrift stores. This one's for you, Terry.

Poor People's Governor Rodney Price Mix | Reggae Lover Podcast 103 This episode highlights some revolutionary lyrics and spiritual songs from Bounty Killer's catalog. Included here are tunes offering chastisement of government officials and petty thieves alike. Rodney charges both the murderers in the community and the policy makers who allow guns to prevail on the ghetto streets. Bounty pens exclamations on behalf of the Jamaican lower class, giving them a global voice. The so-called 'Warlord' praises our Heavenly Father and encourages youth to seek education. The '5-Star General' was instrumental in boosting the careers of dancehall stars like Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Aidonia, Baby Cham, Busy Signal, Wayne Marshall, Angel Doolas, Nitty Kutchie and Elephant Man, among others. He continues to give young artists a platform. Rodney Price's contributions to the culture have been immense. His legacy is one for the ages.
