On March 6, 1971, a group of some of the top musicians from the United States – Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett, The Staples Singers, Santana, and more – boarded a plane bound for Ghana to perform in a musical celebration that was dubbed the “Soul to Soul Festival”. Thousands of audience members filled Accra's Black Star Square for a continuous 15 hours of music. The festival was planned in part for the annual celebration of Ghana's independence, but also an invitation for a “homecoming” for these noted African-American artists to return to Africa. This episode revisits the famed music festival and explores the longstanding legacy of cultural exchange with African diasporans originally set forth in the 1950s by Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana. Tune in for interviews with noted musicologist John Collins, poet and scholar Tsitsi Ella Jaji, concert goers and more. Produced by Brandi Howell. APWW #829

582. This week we talk to Phil Cross, a leading historian of the Kadohadacho (Caddo) Tribe. Phil grew up in a home with no electricity and no running water on his family's Indian allotment land in western Oklahoma – out where that bright red dirt could both stain his clothes and, in some ways, stir that Okie pride. Phil is a historian, lecturer, Caddo traditional singer and dancer, author, drummer, woodworker, flute maker and much more. Now available: Liberty in Louisiana: A Comedy. Joe Borges tells Elizabeth and Julia how his brain injury gave him a new appreciation for life and why he believes it was a 'blessing' allowing him to have a life "reset". The NeuroNerds co-host divulges his feelings of being lost and 'surviving' rather than living prior to having a brain injury but how he is now able to live a purposeful life. He reveals the highs and lows following his brain injury and why mindset plays such a key role in recovery. Welcome to the latest episode of the Mind Gut Conversation Podcast, a place to learn from thought leaders in the area of health, food, the science of mind-body interactions and the environment. Today, I have the great pleasure to speak to Sonu Shivdasani, a visionary Indian wellness resort entrepreneur who is the CEO and founder of Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani, as well as other luxury wellness resorts in Southeast Asia. Having just spent 10 days at the SOUL Festival on Soneva Fushi, I am still amazed at the scope and uniqueness of the experience, touching every aspect of human life from the physical, emotional, spiritual and planetary. By speaking with him, it became clear that this unique experience was a reflection of Sonu's own beliefs and core values in synergy with his wife Eva. In this episode, I ask Sonu several questions, including: - How did you become this unique individual? What were the key life experiences that made you that person? - You have achieved some amazing accomplishment, despite having to overcome several serious challenges to your own well-being, your health and your business success, demonstrating a remarkable resilience. What has been your secret? - You make no secret out of your successful battle with cancer. What have you learned from this life threatening situation? - Which are the accomplishments you are most proud of? - You have had a fairly conservative education at Eaton and Oxford. How has this education shaped who you are today? - Running several luxury resorts you must come in contact with many well to do individuals many of whom believe that happiness comes from the accumulation of material wealth and luxury. As we talked about at the recent festival, there is another form of happiness called Eudaimonia, doing meaningful things and things that benefit others. Is Eudaimonia your guiding principle in making decisions? - You have had personal experiences with the Western healthcare system but also with many alternative healing practices which are being offered at your resorts. What is your view of the benefits of either one of these approaches to human health? - Speakers at the SOUL festival addressed many aspects of our current world of polycrises, from personal wellness to climate change and planetary health. Are you an optimist or pessimist regarding the direction the world is moving in, and how does your view affect your decision making? - The SOUL festival certainly had a big impact on many participants. How many participants do you believe will change their behaviors after this experience? Thanks for listening! Follow Dr. Mayer: https://linktr.ee/emayer

It would be impossible to have grown up in the multicultural melting pot of Birmingham and not have your very soul steeped in music.I was born between Balsall Heath and Moseley; home of Ocean Colour Scene, UB40, The Beat, the drummer Bev Bevan, the “Mostly Jazz Festival” and for a short while, the writer J.R.R Tolkien. My local high street, Ladypool road, now famous for it's Balti restaurants, had at one end of it one of the most renowned Reggae record shops in Britain; “Don Christie's”. Halfway down was “The Red Lion” pub where live jazz was played three nights a week. It's claim to fame was infact, having been the location for the UB40 video “Red, Red Wine” a few years earlier but for me, it was a wonderful new world into which I snuck (all at a much too early age and of course unbeknown to my parents) and where I absorbed not only jazz, but a bohemian, slightly naughty and thrilling world where grown ups drank and partied (mine didn't) and where there was something exciting in the air that I couldn't quite fathom or quite put a name to yet but… I think it began with S. Further down this same road led to Moseley Village, an area known for being creative, cosmopolitan and the focus of artistic and student activities with plenty of pubs, restaurants and live music, home of The Moseley Folk Festival and of the aforementioned “Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul” Festival. My first proper CD as a vocalist was “Just in Time” and was produced by award winning jazz singer Ian Shaw. It was launched at The 606 Club in 2005 and I've continued on a brilliant jazz singer journey ever since, whilst at all times following the advice that bass player Geoff Gascoyne gave me to “Always play with the best people. Don't be afraid to call them. They'll take the gig!”Support the show

It's been a few weeks since Andrea and Niall were able to pod because of holidays, festivals and the summer season. So it's a more casual episode this time around with Niall sharing his experiences from week 2 at Primavera Sound in Barcelona and Andrea making a rare festival visit to Body & Soul Festival. There's also Forbidden Fruit chat and our Nialler9 Discord community weigh in our their experiences at Prima. And there's always time to talk about one of the greatest songs of all-time - 'Running Up That Hill' by Kate Bush, which as you no doubt know by now, has seen a resurgence thanks to its sync placement in season four of Netflix show Stranger Things, and promptly picked up 616 million Tik Tok plays and has gone to number 1 in the UK and Australia.Who knew a song from 1985 might become the song of the summer? You don't need to ask us twice to discuss the enduring appeal of the classic song, and why it's resonating once more.Plus, Andrea tells us her opinion on the new Beyoncé song.Listen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedEpisode notes / referencesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistVox - How a recording-studio mishap shaped '80s musicLinndrum famous songsNialler9 Mix Series: Mix & Fairbanks – Linndrum mix 2016Remixes mentioned:Patrice Baumel EditAshley Beedle EditSupport us on Patreon. Three weeks from now, give or take, Moseley Park will jump to the Mostly Jazz Funk and Soul Festival - a three-day event that will bring you exactly that: Jazz, Funk, and Soul. Some stellar acts are booked, and a whole host of up-and-coming and established local acts as well. I have listed some of the main names at the bottom of this post, but for full details, head over to the MoJazz website, which is pretty comprehensive. There's an awful lot that goes into organising an event like this, and I sat down with Festival Manager John Fell, to talk about some of the challenges. It's fascinating stuff, and the stories that have emerged over the past two very difficult years are compelling: acts that refused to use the stage entrance... acts that came back the next day because they enjoyed themselves so much.... embracing the local dance scene, and much more. There's more to read about on the companion blog page, and here are just a few links to follow. https://mostlyjazz.co.uk/ https://www.thespecials.com/ https://www.cameonation.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatback_Band https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Charles .
We're joined on Sheer Isolation this week by founder of the Swindon Jazz and Soul Festival, Evie Em-Jay. We spoke to Evie last year when the town's jazz nights were just starting up again following lockdown. April's Jazz and Soul Festival will only be the second time this event has been held. She successfully established it in 2019, and has been forced to cancel for the last two years. Evie updates us on the popularity of her regular music nights in venues across Swindon, and confirms who is on the bill to perform at the festival. Our music choices this week include one of the festival headliners - Ray Gelato and the Giants. We also play a Foo Fighters cover from Swindon's Bedrock. They released it during the first lockdown to support our key workers, but it feels appropriate to play it now following the death of the Foo's drummer, Taylor Hawkins. We also mention a few other gigs coming up in early April, and Kieran gives us a whistlestop tour of his new recording space.

Angelic DeWitt Simmons: preacher, teacher, servant-leader, counselor, author and mother. Underneath the veil of her humble beauty and gentle smile, is a caterpillar-like story of transformation and transition. She has withstood tumultuous times and dedicated her life to cultivating others as they evolve through their trials and advance through their troubles. In each step of her walk with The Lord, she is encouraging others to reach their God-given potential in their personal, professional, and spiritual lives. Raised in one of the roughest parts of the Washington, DC metropolitan area, Angelic was nurtured in a single-parent Christian home with biblical values and principles. At the tender age of 12, Angelic gave her heart to The Lord. She nurtured her passion for God and cultivated her yielded lifestyle which has led to an anointing to preach and teach the word of God with authority, revelation, and deliverance. At the age of 28, she married renowned evangelist, Pastor Nathan L. Simmons. After being married for close to 8 years and serving her husband as ministerial aid and supporter, wife and mother, Angelic Simmons learned the bittersweet side of ministry- when her husband died. The loss of her husband impacted not only her, but her daughters- Victoria and Alexis- as well as the members of their church. Uncertain about the future, she was propelled from servant to Leader. After hearing the “clarion call” of God and accepting the mantle of her late husband, Superintendent Nathan L. Simmons, Sr. Pastor Simmons transitioned from mourning to ministry, serving as pastor of Citadel of Hope Evangelistic C.O.G.I.C. for over 2 years. In May 2009, determined to reach her God-given aptitude, Sr. Pastor Simmons launched, The New Citadel of Hope Christian Church, now known as Total Victory Worship Center a cutting edge multi-cultural, multi-faceted, family oriented ministry that is reaching with LOVE, teaching to LIVE a Victorious life and building to LAST. Her journey of elevation during troubled times is a testament of Isaiah 61:3~ “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.” Armed with her degrees in Teaching, Religion and Biblical Studies, Sr. Pastor Simmons is known for her challenging preaching and thought-provoking teaching. Her messages motivate, encourage, and produce effective change. She believes “Life is full of battles and struggles. God has positioned each of us to win. Along the way you may get injured. Don’t focus on the wound- rather look for the scar. The scar says ‘I am healed.’” Transformed from widow to weapon of power, her anointing deeply penetrates the mind, heart, and soul. Her teaching, preaching, and sharing of the good news of Jesus Christ has liberated many. She is the author of one of the most motivating and captivating books to be birthed into the Earth realm, From Ashes to Destiny. As a woman of style, grace and integrity, Angelic DeWitt Simmons is an inspiration to countless individuals as she seeks to empower individuals to be efficient and effective kingdom builders. ---------------------------------------------- Singing since the age of 10, Somalia is an emerging R&B singer, songwriter, and performing artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. The new artist experience, what do they get off the ground and get established? Host Christ Batstone has an in-depth discussion with Zamani and Selby Evans. Singer, songwriter, producer – Zamani won the 2019 Atlantic International Film Festival (FIN) Award for Best Atlantic Original Score. The winning score “What's So Great About Him” was written for a ten minute short film titled Cockblock, directed by Halifax filmmaker Tamar Dina and stars musicians/actors Kirsten Olivia Taylor and Samm Reid, along with actor Ryan Willis. The award was announced and presented at the Linda Joy Media Arts Society FIN Awards Luncheon on September 19th, 2019. This award comes on the heels of Zamani's recent success in capturing the 2019 TD International Jazz Festival Stingray Rising Star Award receiving a $3000 cash prize from Stingray Music.Zamani began singing with her family at community events at age 12. Versed in many Black music genres, Zamani became inspired to expand her repertoire of R&B, Urban Jazz and Pop after receiving praise from the late veteran vocalist Sharon Jones who caught her performance- while then only 14 – with her jazz guitarist father Harvi Millar at the TD Halifax International Jazz Festival. In 2018 Zamani received ANSMA's Portia White Youth Music Award and the Jongleur Youth Arts Award. In 2018 she received ANSMA's Emerging Artist of the Year Award and released her first self-titled EP Mix Tape shortly after. In 2019 Zamani mae her first international appearances performing at New Skool Rules Festival in Rotterdam, and opening for R&B veterans Maya and Genuwine and Pop artist UB40, at the Caribbean Roots and Soul Festival in St. Lucia. More about Zamani. Selby Evans is a young bilingual emerging artist currently based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Having recently graduated from Dalhousie University with a degree in music, Selby quickly garnered attention with the release of his first bilingual EP Emmène-moi, in December 2015. He has performed in numerous prominent concerts over the last year, most notably, with Symphony NewBrunswick for seven sold out shows last fall in La Vallée des Possibles, and in the Francofête en Acadie as well as several other french music festivals. Two singles from the EP are receiving considerable radio play, Emmène-moi and Dis-moi encore, with the latter projected to enter the ARCANB top ten chart. An english single, On your Own has also received play on local radio. Further, Emmène-moi was listed in the top ten sales for Distributions Plages, in both March and April 2016, and digital sales (Itunes) continue to do well.To produce this first EP, Selby surrounded himself with several notable collaborators, including trumpet player and multi-instrumentalist Sebastien Michaud who coproduced the album, poet Hermenegilde Chiasson who contributed lyrics on L'ettre D'amour, as well as drummer and engineer Danny Bourgeois, to name only a few. These prominent session musicians form an important part of Selby's team going forward. The release of this self funded debut EP was not only an important first step in terms of career development, but also provided many important lessons and insights about product development, live performance, marketing and the music industry more generally.

We're live from Body & Soul Festival in Ireland talking Maeve Binchy's classic CIRCLE OF FRIENDS. This 700 page epic about a single academic school year is probably the most frequently spotted book on Irish shelves, and with good reason. We talk upwardly mobile Catholics in 1950s Ireland, the specific pains of being a Big Strapping Country lass in a Nan Mahon world, the exquisite world-building of Binchy's Ireland, and learning to embrace Irish fiction, clichés and all. Sarah Maria Griffin is the author of two novels, OTHER WORDS FOR SMOKE and SPARE & FOUND PARTS, and is the co-host of the podcast Juvenalia. This podcast was recorded at Body & Soul Festival, Westmeath. Artwork by Gavin Day, music by Harry Harris, produced by Caroline O'Donoghue and mixed by Hannah Varrall. Hannah Mamalis is an actress, writer, and comedian. You probably know her from loads of stuff like various Dreamgun sketches, live shows, and podcasts or maybe from her Comedy Brunch which has appeared at Smock Alley and the Body & Soul Festival. You’ll definitely know her soon from her role in the upcoming film The Drummer and The Keeper, her appearances at the Vodafone Comedy Festival, and her one-woman show The Egg Is A Lonely Hunter which is running at the Dublin Fringe Festival from Sep 13-17. That was a very long intro but Hannah’s very busy and we like her. Hannah joined Alan and Ellen to talk about Disney’s Fantasia (1940). which has intersected with her life in all kinds of extremely interesting ways. Trust me, you’ll want to listen to this one. This episode is sponsored by the March For Choice which leaves from the Garden Of Remembrance at 2pm, September 30th. This week I am sitting with West Cork based artist Kari Cahill. Kari has a hand in quite a few landmark projects in different parts of the country, as well as running a studio in Schull. In this episode, we talk about the importance of the arts in Ireland today, Kari's visits to India, sustainability, creativity, and reconnecting ourselves to the landscapes of Ireland. We recorded the episode in an upstairs patio room overlooking Cork city. It was very warm and we opened the window, which resulted in the odd bird sound, and city rumblings, and I really enjoyed getting Kari's insights into so many aspects of her work. I hope you enjoy the show.
