David Singer is one of Chicago's most versatile artists: he's a songwriter, performer, filmmaker, screenwriter and podcaster. He's also a founding Board Member and President of Intonation. He's back on Car Con Carne as his first solo album, “The Cost of Living,” is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark the occasion, David Singer and the Sweet Science headline the Hideout on Saturday, December 14 (Early show! Cheap tickets!). Since he's playing the Hideout soon, we decided to record at the Hideout (thanks, Katie and Tim). We holed up in the green room for our chat, which wrapped with David performing two songs: new single “Crashing,” and the title track from “The Cost of Living.” David and I have known each other since well before “The Cost of Living,” so the conversation is always easy and fun with him. We're off on a Goth pilgrimage this week folks, to the motherland, Transylvania, to talk folk-horror and more with Alex Woodroe.Alex is a Romanian writer of dark fictions, the Editor in Chief of Tenebrous Press, and the debut author of Whisperwood. The book brings the monsters of Romanian myth and legend to the fore in a battle of wills with an isolated village. There isn't a vampire in sight. Bram Stoker didn't know what he was talking about.Alex does! And we get into lots of things, from the difference between fantasy and folk-legend, political allegory and the recent history of dictatorship, to the very real undead myths in her own family tree.I learned a lot from this conversation.Enjoy!Whisperwood was published by Flame Tree Press on July 11th Support Talking Scared on PatreonCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show
Joined today by former light middleweight champion of the world Sadam Ali and co-host, former boxer Will “Power” Rosinsky. This episode was recorded from Sadam'a gym in Brooklyn. We chat about how Sadam and Will met each other, their initial thoughts on each other's skills and how Sadam eating at a restaurant alone got us together. Sadam gets right into it and announces that he's on the verge of a comeback to the ring, we hear why he's coming back, who he has his eyes set and why he's a better boxer now. We go back to Sadam at 8 years old falling in love with the sweet science, idolizing Prince Naseem and his fathers influence on his career and life. We talk about winning the golden gloves, being the first Arab-American to resplendent the USA at the Olympics, meeting Kobe Bryant, and where that Ralph Lauren outfit is. Sadam chats about his 22-0 record, his first defeat to Jesse Vargas and then we talk about his career defining match against Miguel Cotto. We hear how that fight got made, how it felt being an underdog in his own backyard, and when he knew he was going to win the fight. Sadam disappoints me and Will with how he celebrated winning the championship, but we hear about it. Sadam shares about falling out of love with boxing, what he did as a young retiree and how the importance of his dad's support drives him. We discuss his other passion, bowling, and his quest to get a 300, beating a young Terence Crawford and why he wasn't allowed to make any dumb purchases. Will and Sadam talk about the business side of boxing, why “influencers” are a great thing and why boxing is a dirty sport. All this plus a ton more with Will Rosinsky and the Champ, Sadam World Kid Ali. Follow Sadam here https://www.instagram.com/theworldkidali/

They call boxing "The Sweet Science" because of its cerebral display of brutality. The Iceman, Matt Frates, brings in cohost of "Political Football" Clev Wason and Supreme Rich, two men linked by their shared history in boxing, to talk about the current state of the sport. Researchers from London's Francis Crick Institute have found a type of artificial sweetener is able to dampen down immune system responses - at least in mice. Karen Vousden and Fabio Zani tell us about the implications. And Ronan McCarthy from Brunel University has found a range of different artificial sweeteners have antibacterial properties. We discuss the connections between these two areas of research and the prospect of developing drug treatments from artificial sweeteners. Penny Johnes from Bristol University discusses the use of phosphorus in agriculture, it's a key component of fertilisers, but global supplies may run out in a few years, despite this overuse of phosphorus in agriculture is also creating problems. And Chat GPT has had a makeover, a new version of the chatbot was rolled out this week. Chatbots seem to be getting a lot of press at the moment, but are they really something we will all be using in the future? Technologist and composer LJ Rich who works with the UN on artificial intelligence gives us her analysis. BBC Inside Science is produced in collaboration with the Open University.
Growing up, Cam dealt with academic and social challenges. Bullying and anxiety led him to join a boxing gym to protect himself. Cam had tried out but was unable to make any teams he tried out for. Boxing was the only available choice since no team had to be made. Cam quickly fell in love with the sport. He realized his potential to be great and dedicated every waking moment to be the best boxer possible. Cam's mental toughness served as his superpower in the ring. Within 2 years in the sport in 2008, Cam won the National Championship claiming the title as the #1 Super Heavyweight boxer in the country. Cam holds 4 Golden Gloves Championships, 6 US Championships, 3 PAL National Championships, 6 Ringside Championships, and 3 Olympic Trials. Cam holds the title as the Winningest Boxer in USA Boxing history. Cam's accomplishments are impressive but pale in comparison to the losses he has accumulated to reach this point. His story of resilience is so inspiring it's featured in the NETFLIX Original documentary COUNTERPUNCH. During his motivational speeches he shares how he faced adversities in and outside of the ring with a Championship Mindset. Boxing is the greatest metaphor because everyone is fighting their own battles. This is what makes Cam's message so relatable. Proteins and peptides have unique characteristics which can help with the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic prediction of diseases. The study of these indicators, called proteomics, hinges on accuracy, which is why a lab in South Carolina is working to make the process of identification more precise using automated technology. And if successful, the work done in this lab could help to prevent neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. A leading biotech company, Integrated Micro-Chromatography Systems (IMCS Inc.) has already discovered three product lines of unique enzymes that help indicate neurological illnesses and are used for drug testing. Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Andrew Lee, Ph.D., joins us to breakdown the powerful capabilities of the enzyme his lab is working to develop and what that means for the future of medical science. Andrew unpacks the path to discovery, the importance of patenting your ideas, and why IMCS is determined to make the decoy sugars better, faster, and more accessible. In this episode, Andrew Lee joins our hosts Joseph Nother and Kim Christ to explain how he grew the leading lab from the ground up, to where it is today on the precipice of a revolutionary discovery. Listen to his advice on delegating, dealing with weaknesses and transforming neurodegenerative research.
