When cold cases are looked at, many officers believe the name of the culprit is already held within the paperwork. Time can restrict an investigation as people move away, forget details or pass away. But it also works in the other way, that loyalties change, people lose the fear of being found out or their conscience finally gets to them and new information is given. Between 1993 and 1998, six women disappeared under mysterious circumstances within a geographical area now referred to as the Vanishing Triangle:Annie McCarrick (1993): An American student living in Dublin, Annie was last seen boarding a bus to Enniskerry. Despite extensive searches, no trace of her has been found.Fiona Pender (1996): A 25-year-old pregnant woman from Tullamore, Fiona disappeared without a trace.Ciara Breen (1997): A 17-year-old from Dundalk, Ciara vanished after sneaking out of her home one night.Fiona Sinnott (1998): Fiona was last seen leaving a pub in County Wexford. Despite ongoing searches, her case remains unsolved.Jo Jo Dullard (1995): Disappeared while hitchhiking home to Kilkenny from Dublin. A pilot project to issue tasers to frontline gardai is set to be rolled out following government approval today. The plan will run for 6 months, and will see over 100 uniformed members equipped with the devices in Dublin, Waterford and Kilkenny divisions. We were joined by the Vice President of the Garda Representative Association Niall Hodgins.
Frontline uniformed gardaí could be using Taser stun guns almost immediately under a proposal being brought to Government by Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan. The stun guns could be used in policing on the streets of Dublin, Waterford and Kilkenny over the Christmas period, if approved by Cabinet today.
Dave and Fionnuala dive into conversation about the controversial introduction of tasers for members of An Garda Síochána. As Dublin, Waterford, and Kilkenny become the testing grounds for this pilot project, the duo raise the question: what alternative non-lethal weapons could be used instead? Together, they share amusing suggestions ranging from the classic flick of a tea towel to the unconventional 'wet salmon' technique.

Like a whole generation of young Irish men, John Mackey emigrated to the UK in the 1950s in search of work.At 87 and living alone in north London, the Kilkenny man who never married was sociable, charming and always dapper in his trilby hat. He was beloved by his nieces and nephews. On May 6th he headed to his local supermarket for some shopping and, as he'd increasingly stopped cooking for himself, a takeaway of chips and sausages. On his way home he was set upon by Peter Augustine (59) who stole his shopping and food, and having beaten the frail man, left him for dead.Augustine's two-week trial ended last week in the Old Bailey with a guilty verdict. He will be sentenced on November 28th.For Irish Times London correspondent Mark Paul, Mackey's murder had a particularly poignancy. He was one of a dwindling number of 1950s emigrants who left a very different Ireland to make their home in London.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Suzanne Brennan. Hosted on Acast. In a riveting exposé, author Eimear Ní Bhraonáin details the extraordinary fall of Kilkenny hurling star DJ Carey, who has been sentenced to five and a half years for defrauding 22 people out of nearly €400,000 by falsely claiming he had cancer. For nearly three years, Eimear conducted over one hundred interviews to uncover the depths and impact of his financial scamming and deceit.
"Hammer + Echo" Getting their start in the early '80s, the Kilkenny Cats were one of the most fascinating bands at a time when there were a lot of fascinating bands around. Formed by the North Carolina born Tom Cheek, who had relocated to Athens, Georgia for college, the Kilkenny Cats played a dark and moody blend of post-punk and psychedelia that still, after all these years, feels decidedly timeless. Here's what I mean by that--sometimes when you listen to a band you can hear the years they existed. We won't name. names, but you know what I mean--however, when it comes to the Kilkenny Cats, their music was so singular, they elude the timeline. Although their fellow city dwelling comrades ranged from REM to Pylon to Love Tractor, they were their own thing. Alive with jangling guitars, prowling basslines, foreboding drums and sonorous vocals, the Kilkenny Cats' music was awash in mystery and maybe that's why all these years later, they still sound as pressingly relevant as ever. They were a beloved live act, they had a deal with Twin/Tone, played shows with REM and Husker Du and then? Well, then decades of silence. Why? Well, that's what we're here to figure out and Tom Cheek walks us through it all. Spoiler alert: The 'Cats are back and more music in addition to the wonderful expanded reissue of 1988's Hammer + Echo, will be coming.
