This geographical area, roughly between the Dublin, Carlow, and Kilkenny regions, has become infamous due to the unsettling circumstances surrounding these cases. Let's talk about it. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 3ú lá de mí Aibreán, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1965 tháinig an nuacht amach go raibh 1,000 oifigeach den stát nach raibh ag obair a thuilleadh – bhí siad mar ionadaí de státseirbhíseach, múinteoirí gardaí agus an airm, chuala siad gearán den Aire Airgeadas dá dhearcadh chuig a pinsean. I 1998 bhí an National Irish Bank I dtrioblóid mar tháinig an nuacht amach go raibh siad ag tógáil níos mó airgead as a chustaiméirí. I 1998 bhí Tiobraid Árann ag imir I gcoinne Cill Chainnigh ag Staid Semple ach tháinig an nuacht amach nach mbeadh John Leahy ag imirt de bharr gur gortaíodh é. I 2014 faoi dheireadh bhuaigh an club rugbaí ormand san Aonach Urmhumhan. Tar éis 9 mbliain bhuaigh siad an Roinn 2A. Sin Run DMC le It's Like That – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1998. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1979 thosaigh Kate Bush a turas ceoil darbh ainm Tour Of Life sa Learpholl. Bhí na daoine a raibh ticéad acu an ádhúil mar dúradh go mbeadh sé 25 bhliain roimh a mbeadh Kate Bush ag déanamh turas ceoil eile. I 2011 chuaigh Adele chuig uimhir a haon sna cairteacha lena albam 21 agus d'fhan sí ann ar feadh 10 seachtain. Bhí amhráin ar an albam cosúil le Rolling In The Deep agus Set Fire To The Rain. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh amhránaí Leona Lewis sa Bhreatain I 1985 agus rugadh aisteoir Eddie Murphy I Nua Eabhrac ar an lá seo I 1961 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 3rd of April, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh In 1965 nearly 1,000 retired state officers who were representing civil servants, teachers, gardai and the army, heard severe critcism of the minister for finance for his attitude towards their pension claims In 1998 The northern ireland wing of beleagured national irish bank was at the centre of fresh allegations of overcharging its customers In 1998 - TIPPERARY faced into a crucial National Hurling League clash against Kilkenny at Semple Stadium, but they would be without John Leahy who has been ruled out through injury. In 2014 – Finally, it was to be for Nenagh Ormond Rugby Club. After Nine years the wait for Nenagh Ormond to win promotion to Division 2A of the Ulster Bank League was over at last. That was Run DMC with It's Like That – the biggest song on this day in 1998. Onto music news on this day in 1979, singer-songwriter Kate Bush, then 20, kicked off her 28-date Tour Of Life at Liverpool's Empire Theatre. Ticket holders were particularly lucky, given that it would be another 25 years before Bush committed herself to another extended run of concerts. 2011, British singer-songwriter Adele broke a UK chart record when her second album, 21, spent ten consecutive weeks at No.1. Featuring the hits “Rolling in the Deep” and “Set Fire to the Rain.” And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – Leona Lewis was born in England in 1985 and actor Eddie Murphy was born in New York City on this day in 1961 – and these are some of the things he has done. I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.

South East Technological University (SETU) proudly hosted the fifth annual Women in Technology event at the SETU Arena in Waterford recently. Designed to empower young women, the event aimed to break down barriers in the tech industry, showcase career opportunities, and highlight relevant courses at SETU. Over 1,100 female students from Cork, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Wexford, and Waterford attended, gaining inspiration from keynote speakers and industry professionals through engaging discussions and one-on-one conversations. Kim McKenzie-Doyle of The Big Idea delivered an insightful keynote address, empowering the young women to think creatively and solve real-world problems by connecting with industry to forge their futures, while RTÉ broadcaster and advocate Zoe Ryan, acted as MC for the event. Guest speakers Rebecca Troy, Associate Engineer at Sun Life, and Zara Grunner, Software Development Engineer at Security Risk Advisors, spoke about their career journeys, emphasising the wealth of opportunities available for women in technology. Leading tech companies from the region also participated, offering students valuable insights into career pathways within the sector. Unum's Business Architect Sarah Adderley facilitated a successful Stemming Ahead workshop with attendees. Amanda Freeman-Gater, Assistant Head of the Computing and Mathematics Department at SETU, highlighted the increasing need for more women in technology. Fear (61) cúisithe faoi luach €10.6m cócaon. A 61-year-old man has been remanded in custody and charged with possession of €10.6m worth of cocaine seized last Tuesday. Tá fear 61 bliain d'aois curtha siar faoi choinneáil agus é cúisithe i leith luach €10.6m den druga cócaon a gabhadh Dé Máirt seo caite. Michael Murphy was brought before Gorey District Court in Co Wexford this morning. Tugadh Michael Murphy os comhair Chúirt Dúiche Ghuaire i gCo Loch Garman ar maidin. He has an address - which has not been permitted to be published at the request of his lawyer - on the border between Kilkenny and Waterford. Tá seoladh aige - nach bhfuil ceadaithe a fhoilsiú ar iarratas óna dhlíodóir - ar an teorainn idir Cill Chainnigh agus Port Láirge. Detective Sergeant Seán Lane of Waterford Garda Barracks gave evidence that at 11.02 last night he arrested Michael Murphy, and that Mr Murphy replied "I understand the reason for this". Thug an Bleachtaire Seán Lane as Beairic na nGardaí i bPort Láirge fianaise gur ag 11.02 aréir a ghabh sé Michael Murphy, agus gur fhreagair an tUasal Murphy "tuigim an chúis atá imo leith". The Gardaí asked that he not be granted bail, which was confirmed by Judge Kevin Staunton. D'iarr na Gardaí nach mbronnfaí bannaí air, rud a dhearbhaigh an Breitheamh Kevin Staunton. Lawyer Chris Hogan asked that Michael Murphy be sent to Cork Prison - and not to Cloverhill Prison - "as there are well-founded concerns that his life would be in danger". D'iarr an dlíodóir Chris Hogan go gcuirfí Michael Murphy go Príosún Chorcaí - agus ní go Príosún Chnoc na Seamar - "mar go bhfuil imní a bhfuil bunús leis go mbeadh a bheatha i mbaol". Judge Staunton granted that request and issued a request not to publish it. Cheadaigh an Breitheamh Staunton an t-iarratas sin agus iarratas nach bhfoilseofaí a sheoladh. Michael Murphy has been remanded in custody in Cork Prison until a week from tomorrow, when he is due to appear in court again via video link. Cuireadh Michael Murphy siar faoi choinneáil i bPríosún Chorcaí go dtí seachtain ó amárach, nuair a bheidh sé le bheith os comhair na cúirte arís ar nasc-físe. A week and a half ago, Gardaí stopped a lorry on the M9 in Co Kilkenny, at around 10am this morning. Seachtain is an lá amárach a tháinig na Gardaí roimh leoraí ar an M9 i gCo Chill Chainnigh, thart ar a 10 a chlog ar maidin. The lorry was taken to Dublin Port for an X-ray examination. Tugadh an leoraí go Calafort Átha Cliath le scrúdú X-gha a dhéanamh uirthi. Then the Gardaí and the Customs Service came across 152kg of cocaine - worth €10.6m they say. Ansin a tháinig na Gardaí agus an tSeirbhís Custaim ar 152kg cócaon - luach €10.6m a deir siad. A search was subsequently carried out at a residence and 2 business premises in Waterford. Ina dhiaidh sin tugadh faoi chuardach ar theach cónaithe agus ar 2 áitreabh gnó i bPort Láirge. Michael Murphy after the court hearing in Gorey Michael Murphy tar éis na héisteachta cúirte i nGuaire

Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny 2-0 Presentation College, Athenry Roisin Foley (50), Emily Phelan (67) Two second half goals ensured Cup success for Presentation Secondary School, Kilkenny over defending Champions Presentation College, Athenry in a sun-soaked Athlone Town AFC this afternoon (March 19). It's been some season for the Kilkenny kingpins as this victory confirmed a Cup double for the girls with their Senior crew capturing the National title five weeks ago in the same venue with six of the Junior squad involved in that showpiece. It was a case of taking their chances when they came with a sublime effort from Roisin FOLEY to open her account for Kilkenny with twenty minutes of the game remaining. Vice Captain Emily PHELAN made sure of the win three minutes from time when she saw her effort go in off the keeper. Kilkenny made the brighter start to the contest with Hannah Griffey forcing a brilliant save from Jane Brennan with 13 minutes on the clock. Towards the latter stages of the first half, it was Athenry that dominated most of the possession but just couldn't get the ball on target as the teams went in goalless at the break. Within four minutes, Kilkenny broke the deadlock with a superb set piece from Roisin FOLEY that sailed over the head of Brennan and into the top corner, leaving the Galway shot-stopper no chance. The Galway side had a great opportunity to draw level a few moments later when Niamh Kilgannon had a glancing header goal bound only for Isabelle Carroll to produce a top class save at the near post to deny the youngster. Noone, Duffy and McNamara had half chances blocked down with some solid defensive play from Presentation, Kilkenny. The killer blow for Athenry came three minutes from time when Emily PHELAN'S cross slipped through the hands of Brennan and in for Kilkenny's second of the afternoon. After the game, Presentation College manager Joe Finnerty spoke to Galway Bay FM's Mike Rafferty. == PRESENTATION SECONDARY SCHOOOL, KILKENNY | Isabelle Carroll, Anna Morrissey, Roisin Foley, Hannah Griffey, Maria Ryan, Ellie Barron, Kate Ryan, Olivia Dunphy ©, Emily Phelan ©, Meadhbh Doherty, Ellen Treacy SUBS USED | Kate Dalton for Treacy (46) Amy O'Shea for Barron (46). ePower is to supply over 20 shopping centres across 14 counties nationwide with high speed EV charging points, following a partnership agreement with Lanthorn, which manages a portfolio of over €1.6bn of property throughout Ireland. Rollout will begin in 2025, and the sites where chargers will be installed include Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway, as well as busy urban areas like Navan, Dundalk, Mullingar, Athlone, Maynooth, Portlaoise and Kilkenny. ?ePower is working closely with Lanthorn in association with their project managers, KSNPM. ePower has been selected following a competitive process, which took into account the company's ability to offer high speed charging facilities, tailored specifically to each site, and crucially, the assurance that the sites would be maintained and serviced by ePower's 24/7 help desk, field engineering and remote management. Commenting on the development, John O'Keeffe, CEO of Power, said: "We're very proud to be part of the drive towards making electric vehicles a better choice for consumers. The rollout and delivery of chargers, be it through public or private partnerships, is key to this. Through this partnership with Lanthorn, ePower plans to have super-fast chargers installed at shopping centres around Ireland, from Donegal to Cork and many places in between; it's a great expansion for us in what's been a hugely successful year of growth." It's been a busy year for ePower; the company recently joined forces with Dublin's local authorities to bring online up to 200 fast chargers across the region in 2025. The initial phase of the project will see ePower's high-speed chargers installed at more than 40 Dublin locations across the four Dublin local authorities. The company also won six of 17 government contracts for the rollout of new high-speed electric car charging hubs across Ireland, due to be operational by the end of 2025. In Ireland, more than 5,500 children are currently in foster care. This could be because of illness in the child's family, the death of a parent, neglect, abuse or violence in the home, or simply because the parent or family is not coping. Whatever the reason, foster carers are there to take care of children who cannot live with their own family, either on a short-term or long-term basis. In today's episode, we hear from two foster carers Sinead O'Donnell and Sharon Kelly. O'Donnell, who lives in Donegal, began fostering during Covid and has welcomed two young girls (sisters) into her home. Kelly, who lives in Kilkenny has fostered children for more than a decade and has provided foster care to two children since birth. They tell Róisín Ingle about why they wanted to open up their homes, the challenges involved and what advice they'd give to anyone considering becoming a foster carer. But first Irish Times Opinion editor Jennifer O'Connell is here to discuss some of the stories making headlines this week including American comedian Rosie O'Donnell's decision to move to Ireland, why girls are getting their periods earlier and why Dublin City Council might elevate the Molly Malone statue. Presentation College Athenry will hope their long wait is over this Monday (St. Patrick's Day - 17th March 2025) when they take on Thurles CBS in the Masita All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Senior A Hurling Final. Galway are also seeking to end a 30-year famine since St. Raphael's, Loughrea were victors in 1995. It's a repeat of the 2023 semi-final when Athenry edged their opponents 0-15 to 0-14. Aaron Niland, Seán Murphy, Aodhán McDonagh, Darragh Counihan and Michael Fallon are still involved from that victory. This is Presentation's fifth final appearance following defeats in 1976, 2018, 2019 and 2023. The latter three came at the expense of St. Kieran's, Kilkenny but Presentation Athenry got a measure of revenge in this year's semi-final, winning 4-13 to 2-11 thanks to goals from Oscar Fitzpatrick, Ciarán Leen, Eoin Hannon and Ethan O'Brien. Thurles CBS, chasing a first title since 2009, overcame Coláiste Bhaile Chláir 0-21 to 0-17 in their semi-final. Leading up to the game, Presentation Athenry manager Paul Hoban has been chatting to Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly. == Throw-in at Croke Park on St. Patrick's Day is 3pm and we'll have LIVE coverage here on Galway Bay FM.
Sligo based engineering firm Jennings O'Donovan are one of the first organisations in Ireland to use new digital technology to reward staff with a local gift card. Jennings O'Donovan used the technology available through their local Town & City Gift Card to reward their 90+ staff with an e-card as a Christmas reward. The new tech allowed the firm to send the digital Love Sligo Gift Cards to staff on a chosen day and time, ensuring all staff members received their reward at the same time. Focused on renewable energy, water supply and wastewater treatment across Ireland, Jennings O'Donovan said the new way of rewarding their team digitally had a number of benefits over physical gift cards, while the local element allowed their employee reward investment to benefit the local economy. David Kiely is director at Jennings O'Donovan and commented: "As a Sligo based organisation, we feel the need to give back to the community, support local businesses and support placemaking efforts in the town too. A strong town attracts new industry and encourages new businesses, which is a real positive for Sligo. Choosing our local Town & City Gift Card, the Love Sligo Gift Card, meant the €30,000 we invested in our team rewards went directly into the local economy, and stayed in the local economy. "Another reason for moving to the Love Sligo Gift Card was the zero commission that businesses have to pay to accept the card, so if a team member spends €50 with a local shop, the shop keeps the full €50. Lots of retailers, restaurants and other businesses accept the Love Sligo Gift Card, so there was plenty of choice for our team. "Our employees were told in advance that they'd be receiving their digital Love Sligo Gift Card reward by email. The ease of use for us in administering the digital card over a physical card was brilliant. We have a hybrid working system which means that not all employees are in the office at the same time. In the past, this has meant we couldn't get the cards to the staff member in person, so they had to then be posted out. With the digital Love Sligo Gift Card, everyone received their reward at the same time. "The Love Sligo Gift Card has been well received by staff, particularly the ease and choice. Some staff members used their card to put fuel in their cars, others used their card at the supermarket or the DIY store. People may not always want to spend their reward on discretionary items, and the Love Sligo Gift Card offers our team the chance to spend as they choose. "As local employers and organisations, it is very important that we are involved in, and support our town centres. Local businesses have had, and continue to face many challenges, and choosing the Love Sligo Gift Card is a tangible way that we have been able to give our local businesses a lift." The Town & City Gift Card initiative is active across Ireland in Ballinrobe, Carndonagh, Cavan, Donegal Town, Drogheda, Kilkenny, Letterkenny, Limerick, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford and County Wexford. The cards can be spent with a variety of local businesses, making them popular for employee rewards. €10.5 million of Town & City Gift Cards were purchased in Ireland in 2024, up from €7 million in 2023. Local gift card sales in Ireland are expected to exceed €15 million in 2025. In Sligo, over €1.5 million Love Sligo Gift Cards were purchased between November 2023 and November 2024, with around 70% of sales dedicated to local organisations purchasing the gift card for employee rewards. Over €1.1million of the overall sales figure has now been redeemed across 240 Sligo businesses by way of 29,000 plus in store transactions. The Love Sligo Gift Card was introduced by Sligo BID in association with County Sligo LEADER Partnership to drive spend in Sligo. Cards can be spent with around 240 participating businesses, driving footfall in the town. Gail McGibbon, CEO at Sligo BID said: "We are proud to see well-respected Sligo firm Jennings O'Donovan leading the way with l...

Plans have been unveiled for a new digital gift card for Mullingar to replace their popular gift vouchers. In circulation since 2012, over €2.5 million of Mullingar Gift Vouchers have been sold to date, with over €500,000 of the paper vouchers sold in 2024 alone. Led by Mullingar Chamber, a wide variety of Mullingar businesses are eligible to accept the card including shops, restaurants, pubs, attractions, salons and hotels. Businesses who are part of the Chamber can accept the card commission free. The forthcoming Mullingar Digital Gift Card will be available as either a physical or a digital gift card. It will work with merchants' existing payment terminals, with no additional equipment required. Mullingar Chamber says the move to the high-tech gift card offers a number of improvements for local businesses, customers and organisations. James Bourke, president at Mullingar Chamber said: "The paper gift vouchers have been very successful for our economy with €2.5 million in sales to date. Every euro spent locally is worth €4 to the local economy, so that €2.5 million has benefited our economy to the tune of €10 million. Of course, there are the usual drawbacks of paper vouchers, such as people not being able to get change from their paper voucher and the administration involved for businesses in getting paid. "Our forthcoming Mullingar Gift Card will be easy for customers and organisations to use as gifts, and businesses to accept, making the initiative even more appealing and helping us develop our strong 'shop local' ethos in Mullingar further. People want to see the businesses they love open and busy, and our new gift card is essential to helping Mullingar to thrive. "We encourage all retail, hospitality, and service providers to register to accept the new gift card prior to its launch so they can benefit from the footfall and spend the initiative will bring." The Mullingar Gift Card will be part of the multi-award-winning Town & City Gift Card concept active across Ireland in Ballinrobe, Carndonagh, Cavan, Donegal Town, Drogheda, Kilkenny, Letterkenny, Limerick, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford and County Wexford. Colin Munro is the managing director of Miconex and said: "Merchants can register to accept the forthcoming Mullingar Gift Card with a simple one-time registration. We've supported a number of towns and cities in Ireland making the move from paper vouchers to a high-tech gift card and the feedback from merchants, consumers and organisations is incredibly positive, with all appreciating the ease of use, support for local and choice." All-Ireland winners Paul Murphy and James Skehill are back to review a dramatic weekend in the National Hurling League. On a week where Clare lost their Hurler of the Year Shane O'Donnell for the season, the Banner rallied to beat their rivals Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds. Diarmuid Healy seized his chance for Cork in their victory over Kilkenny on Leeside, while Galway made it three wins in-a-row by overcoming Wexford. Offaly remain top of the pile in Division One B, Antrim's late equalising goal was a blow for Carlow, while Waterford finished strongly to beat Dublin at Walsh Park. On, and the lads learned the origin of the Paddy Losty meme, and its connection to Galway hurling...
Galway play their second game in this year's Very National Camogie League on Saturday (1st March 2025) away to Waterford. Carrie Dolan and the evergreen Ailish O'Reilly came up with some important scores as Galway got the wraps off their season with a win down in UPMC Nowlan Park over Kilkenny. It's another away day for Cathal Murray's crew, and a first home tie for the Suirsiders and with both sides assimilating younger players into the panels and dealing with injuries, it should be an enlightening game. Having faced the All-Ireland champions, Cork in the opening round, Waterford must now take on the runners-up. Beth Carton remains their attacking talisman but the concession of early goals had them on the back foot. They showed good resolve in the second half, however, without ever looking like reeling in the Rebels. Galway senior manager Cathal Murray gave his thoughts to Galway Bay FM's Tommy Devane. == Galway have made three changes for their game against Waterford. Carnmore's Jennifer Hughes and St. Thomas' Áine Keane return following their Ashbourne Cup success with University of Limerick. Oranmore-Maree's Ailish O'Reilly struck 0-3 against Kilkenny and that earns her a starting spot. They replace Katie Manning, Annmarie Starr and Niamh McInerney.
