It's an understatement to say Tatiana Maslany has range. She's known for playing 17 characters in the 2013 show, Orphan Black. Since then, she's acted in Marvel's She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, a couple Broadway plays, and a host of animated projects, horror films and other genre-bending works. Now, she stars in the dark comedy thriller, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, as a mother embroiled in a sex work scam turned murder investigation.
Science fiction has been part of television since at least the 1950s, when “Lost in Space” and “Star Trek” gave us charmingly quaint visions of what the future could look like. By the dawn of the 21st Century, technology had caught up to creators' visions, leading to a Golden Age of genre television. Series celebrated by critics and embraced by audiences with their mind-blowing imagination and, at their best, critique and comment on the human condition, even as they chronicle society's intersections with technology, time, and space. So join the Great Pop Culture Debate as we attempt to name the Best Sci-Fi Television Series from 2000 to 2025.Shows discussed: “The Expanse,” “Firefly,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Star Wars: The Mandalorian,” “The X-Files,” “Star Wars: Andor,” “Westworld,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” “Doctor Who,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” “Black Mirror,” “Orphan Black,” “Stargate SG-1,” “3 Body Problem,” “Foundation,” “Fringe”Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Kara Austin, Victor Manibo, and Zack Derby as they discuss and debate 16 of the most influential science-fiction TV series of the past 25 years. For the warm-up to this episode, in which we discuss additional 21st Century sci-fi shows that didn't make the bracket, become a Patreon supporter of the podcast today. About This Episode: What do we really know about our dads — and what have we never been able to say out loud? Taylor Trowbridge joins Phil to talk about her new solo show Dads, playing at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Part stand-up, part storytelling, part audience game, the show invites people to sit with the full range of their experiences with their fathers: the funny, the complicated, and the quietly unresolved. Taylor and Phil dig into the generational forces that shaped so many dads — wartime trauma, boomer expectations, the rigid masculinity that made emotional connection difficult — and how those patterns echo forward into all of us. Taylor also shares how her brother Dylan is directing the show, why the family collaboration just makes sense, and what it was like to turn questions about her own dad into a piece of theatre. This episode explores: What Dads is — and why Taylor wanted to build a show around audience interaction, games, and stand-up The generational and emotional weight fathers carry, and how masculinity shapes the father-child relationship Working with her brother Dylan Trowbridge as director, and why no chemistry test was needed Tool for Rebellion: Taylor's verbatim theatre piece on incel culture, the Toronto van attack, and the limits of empathy And much more! We needed more spookies because the spookies we had made us feel spooked. So we did a roundup, but nobody wanted to try and edit this in a week to get it out with the others, so here we are, hanging out in April and wishing it was October.Buckle up for reviews on:The under-seen John Carpenter banger starring Sam Neil, "In the Mouth of Madness (1994)" in which a Stephen King type is unleashing an eldritch horror upon the world and the only question we have is DO YOU READ SUTTER KANE.Na Hong-jin's 2016 "The Wailing" follows a goofy police officer (Kwak Do-won) dealing with a village being overtaken by evil and fake prophets lurk in the wings to make things worse. What happens when the evil infection gets to his family? Find out, but also marvel at having to get intimate with your wife in your car in the driveway because too many people live in your home. The spanish language When Evil Lurks (Cuando acecha la maldad), follows a demon outbreak in a world where everyone knows about "The Rotten" and the dangers associated with them. In a film full of brain eating, what's the spookiest thing? Perhaps it's not listening to your elders, and Demián Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvia Sabater, Marcelo Michinaux all find out the hard way in Demián Rugna's 2023 gore fest.Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy's 2024 "Dead Mail" follows wildly cool Jasper (Tomas Boykin), who traces dead mail in order to return it to the sender. After getting a blood soaked letter turned over to him, he gets moving on solving where it came from. Is it a hoax? Sterling Macer Jr. and John Fleck round out a low budget and infinitely creative horror flick.Scott Beck and Bryan Woods brought us the Hugh Grant showcase that is 2024's "Heretic". After two young missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) visit Grant's home in order to spread the good word, they realize they're locked in and have to have a face off to escape or else find out if there's a god monster in the basement or if the monster is right in front of them. At least there's blueberry muffins? Rounding out the Spooky Roundup is Oz Perkin's "The Monkey", a splatter fest full of comedy. Twin brothers find their missing dad's toy monkey and quickly realize it kills when it is wound up. The consequences follow them into their adulthood as they're both played by Theo James (from "The Gentlemen" show on Netflix) and an unbelievable mountain of death falls upon a town. Based on a short story from Stephen King, Tatiana Maslany ("Orphan Black"/"She Hulk"), Sarah Levy ("Schitt's Creek") and Adam Scott ("Severence") are along for the ride in Perkin's follow-up to the smash hit "Longlegs".If you like this, subscribe, rate, and if you review it on a podcasting platform, mention a movie you want us to cover in said review and you get a video just like this one. "Raising money off frothy numbers to sugarcoat the rotten apple is what built this town.” That's according to Duncan Park, the protagonist of "The Audacity," a new dark comedy from AMC about tech CEOs and their relationships with their families, therapists and enablers. Live from SXSW, Kara spoke with executive producer and showrunner Jonathan Glatzer ("Succession," "Bad Sisters," "Better Call Saul"), star Billy Magnussen, and executive producer Gina Mingacci ("Killing Eve," "Orphan Black"). The series follows Duncan, an ambitious, arrogant data-mining CEO determined to join Silicon Valley's billionaire elite, and holds up a mirror to the greed and ego shaping modern tech culture. They discuss how tech's obsession with disruption and data has come at the cost of privacy and real human connection. While "The Audacity" is a sharp satire, it also finds surprising humanity in even the most unlikable tech bros — and even made Kara feel empathy for them, despite her best intentions. Questions? Featuring: J. TIMOTHY HUNT — Award-Winning Author • Screenwriter • Journalist • Survivor • Memory Explorer Memory, Trauma, and the Unreliable Truth We Carry When memory fractures, storytelling becomes survival. Miss Liz doesn't serve a beverage; she serves real-life changemakers. She serves J. Timothy Hunt, an award-winning American/Canadian journalist, screenwriter, novelist, children's author, actor, and trauma survivor whose life journey reads like a film script raw, riveting, and deeply human. Born in Los Angeles and raised in California and Montana, Timothy's life has been shaped by childhood abuse, bullying, eating disorders, and a turbulent relationship with a mother who attempted to erase his memories. His newest novel, The Museum of Lies, is a psychological thriller exploring how memory fails, protects, distorts, and sometimes betrays us.The story follows Cary Scott, whose traumatic childhood memories are dismantled by a manipulative therapist, forcing readers to ask: What is truth when memory can't be trusted?Timothy is twice nominated for Canada's Governor General's Award, a four-time nominee for the National Magazine Award, and a winner of multiple distinguished writing prizes. His nonfiction book The Politics of Bones was named one of The Globe and Mail's Best Books of the Year. A graduate of AMDA (NYC) and holder of a master's degree in screenwriting from Staffordshire University, he has worked on major productions including Schitt's Creek, Orphan Black, Anne With an E, and Murdoch Mysteries. Under the pen name Tim Beiser, he is also an acclaimed children's author. Timothy splits his life between Toronto, Canada, and Grignan, France, with his husband of 30 years and their twin sons. Miss Liz pours a cup of truth, memory, and survivorship with J. Timothy Hunt, a writer whose life has navigated darkness, brilliance, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of understanding the human mind. Born in Los Angeles, shaped in New York City, and living in Toronto for nearly three decades, Timothy's story begins in trauma and transforms into art. A survivor of childhood abuse, bullying, and bulimia, he has spent a lifetime reconstructing memory both through truth and through necessity. Timothy is an award-winning journalist, novelist, children's author, screenwriter, actor, and storyteller. He has written for major Canadian publications, earned multiple national awards, and worked on landmark television productions including Schitt's Creek, Orphan Black, and Anne With an E.His newest novel, The Museum of Lies, is a psychological labyrinth exploring memory's fallibility, asking us what happens when the truth we rely on dissolves… and we must invent a new one to survive. Tonight, we explore trauma, resilience, writing, identity, memory, and the stories we create to endure what was once unbearable. What an unforgettable, deeply introspective Teatime with J. Timothy Hunt, a conversation that travelled through memory, trauma, creativity, and the art of turning survival into story.Tonight, Timothy reminded us that the mind protects us in strange and complex ways, that truth isn't always clear, and that healing often requires rewriting the narrative to reclaim our power. His journey from child abuse survivor to award-winning author and screenwriter shows the resilience of the human spirit and the purpose that can arise from pain. His insights on writing, memory distortion, satire, trauma, and truth brought depth and brilliance to the Teatime table.

This week on the SciFi TV Rewatch podcast we discuss Demerzel's questioning not only her own mortality, but also her purpose should the genetic dynasty fall. While the chase scene is entertaining, its appearance in the episode seems forced for dramatic purposes. In our What We're Watching segment, Dave begins an Orphan Black rewatch, and Wayne continues w/Yellowjackets, making it into season three, though he remains subdued in his praise for the series. In Listener Feedback, Cincinnati Joe and David Duprey check in via email, and Fred from the Netherlands, Alan in Missouri, and Alan in England comment with audio feedback. One of the greatest treats of Collider Ladies Night is getting to welcome a longtime favorite to show. That happened this time around with Tatiana Maslany, who currently has The Monkey playing in theaters nationwide. One of my earliest experiences doing week-to-week series coverage was Orphan Black. Not only did I absolutely adore the show and frequently marvel at Maslany's work in it, but given my investment, it heavily defined some of the earlier years of my career, paving the way to consistent work, work that I was excited to do and quite proud of. While I have crossed paths with Maslany a number of times since for short-form conversations, I was itching to get the opportunity to sit down for a longer chat, and now, thanks to a downright wild Stephen King adaptation from Osgood Perkins, that time has finally come.Maslany plays Lois in The Monkey, mother to twins Hal and Bill, both played brilliantly by Christian Convery. Lois' husband (Adam Scott) thought a drum-playing monkey would be a great gift to bring home to his boys - until he discovers its tendency to kill victims in especially outrageous and horrific ways. He disappears, leaving Lois a single mother. The trio forge forward well enough until Hal and Bill unearth their father's monkey. With The Monkey currently in theaters, Maslany joined me for a Ladies Night chat to discuss her experience working with Perkins on not one, but two feature films - The Monkey and also Keeper, which was filmed before The Monkey and is due in theaters via Neon later this year. She also took the time to highlight another exciting upcoming project, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, looked back on her experience joining the MCU via She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and discussed what it was like winning a breakout performance award for Grown Up Movie Star as well as an Emmy for Orphan Black. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2015 Netflix series Sense8 for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Sense8 is an incredibly queer show that we honestly cannot believe first premiered a whole entire decade ago. It truly ranks up there next to Orphan Black for us as one of the most impressive shows ever to exist on television. Although we really wish it had gotten more seasons, what we did get was an absolute masterpiece. Sense8 was nominated for GLAAD media awards in 2016, 2018 and 2019 for its queer representation and if you did not get a chance to watch it back then, we really cannot recommend enough that you watch it right now. Like for real, why are you reading this? Go watch Sense8 first and then listen to the episode, because this is full of spoilers from here on. As you might recall from our episodes on The Matrix and Bound, we are big fans of the Wachowski sisters' work. Sense8 is no exception. In fact, Lana Wachowski has said that much of Nomi's storyline was autobiographical in nature. In terms of lesbian couples in media, it doesn't get much more top tier than Nomi and Amanita. Honestly, they might still be at the top even now. We love that Amanita is so ride or die for Nomi; and in context of it being 2015 at the time, the scenes where she defends Nomi against her terfy friends hit even harder. But, as much as we are all in on Nomi and Amanita, they are not the only queer rep in this show. In fact, we'd argue that every single person in the cluster is queer simply by nature of being a sense8. By having this diverse group of people all across the globe suddenly psychically linked, the Wachowskis make a statement about the nature of sexuality, the value of shared experiences in relation to developing empathy, and what it means to be a “we” in all senses of the word. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Sense8, titled “Sum of Our Parts”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida. The Orphan Black franchise returns to TV with Orphan Black: Echoes, and our own Joe Reid returns to talk about the sequel starring Krysten Ritter, Reed Diamond, and a whole assload of strawberry Jell-O. Is the new iteration a pale (pink) imitation of the original? Might it benefit from streaming the whole thing at once? And do its connections to the parent show only point up its weaknesses? Later, we went Around The Dial with (often justly) forgotten sitcoms of the '90s plus The Morning Show and a minor-league 30 For 30, before Hannah schemed to win the lion's share of a place in the Canon for a first-season The Traitors (US). Trebek won, arranged marriage lost, and we pulled some strings to play a nepo-forward Game Time. Get comfy on a living-room soundstage and listen! GUESTS

Welcome to another episode of Resourceful Designer. I'm your host, Mark, and today, I've got an interesting topic inspired by a friend's podcast. You know, it's funny how ideas for podcast episodes can come from the most unexpected places. Sometimes, I meticulously plan out a topic, but other times, like today, a random sentence can spark an idea. Today, we're discussing the importance of asking specific questions, especially in our design businesses. This concept hit home for me through my TV show podcasts like Under the Dome, Orphan Black, and The Expanse. When I started asking targeted questions to my listeners, feedback soared from a handful to dozens per episode. It was a game-changer! So, how does this relate to design? Well, asking clients broad questions like, "What do you think?" rarely yields useful feedback. Instead, be more precise—ask about colour choices, font styles, or layout. This approach makes it easier for clients to provide constructive feedback, helping you create designs that truly meet their goals. Stay tuned as I share insights and tips from my podcasting journey that you can apply to enhance client interactions and improve your design process. Let's get started!
