Our friend Marla Taner joins us to talk about the psychology behind early retirement and what it's like being friends with Mr. Money Mustache!
For the past decade, more and more Americans are living the single life, whether by choice or by circumstance. 45% of adults over the age of 18 are currently single and this number is rising every year. As it happens, the majority of these singletons are women. And these women are managing their own finances independently of a life partner. In this episode, our friend Marla Taner discusses her journey towards financial independence as a single person. A lifetime of good money habits allowed her to create a solid financial foundation that gave her the freedom to live life on her own terms. Yet, she also discusses the challenges and regrets she’s had along the way. Although she hasn't found her life partner yet, she has been able to build other kinds of loving relationships. And she demonstrates how a single person can live a full and rich life by building a wide range of friendships. My good friend Marla Taner joined me on the Financial Independence Podcast to go deep into some early-retirement topics that aren’t often discussed. Marla and I met in 2014 at Camp Mustache and we’ve had a lot of fun (and sometimes heavy) conversations over the years so I thought it’d be great to record one for the podcast! Highlights: How to deal with a sudden early retirement Rethinking travel after leaving work Finding happiness from within Dealing with losing career identity and external validation How to care less about “success” The effort of happiness Focusing on progress rather than the end goal Doing the work to figure yourself out Justifying the decision to retire early
