Schreibt uns! PlayDayz, a new app designed to help parents connect, arrange playdates, and share childcare within their trusted networks, has launched in Ireland. Developed in partnership with award-winning Irish software firm Square Root Solutions, PlayDayz aims to make playdates and childcare more accessible, affordable, and community-driven. PlayDayz app launches in Ireland Flexible, affordable membership PlayDayz is available exclusively in the Republic of Ireland at launch, with plans to expand soon. All new households receive a 30-day free trial, and membership is flexible with no contracts: Standard (€0.99/month): Parent-child meetups and private playdate childcare. Premium (€1.99/month): Includes all standard features plus a day-care share for school holidays. How PlayDayz works 1. Parent and child meetups Parents can connect with others nearby for one-on-one or group playdates. Whether it's a coffee catch-up or a full day out, PlayDayz makes it easy to coordinate meetups. Parents can also add au pairs or childminders to their profile. 2. Free playdate childcare Parents build a private network of trusted friends, family, or school parents. When they need short-term childcare - like for a gym session or appointment - they send a request. The app's turn-based system ensures fairness, making free, reliable childcare accessible without awkwardness. 3. Day-care share for school holidays (Premium members only) School holidays can be difficult to manage for working parents. PlayDayz helps parents coordinate shared childcare, matching them with others in their area with similar needs. A schedule is generated two weeks in advance, ensuring fair, cost-free childcare and social opportunities for children. Safety and privacy first New users must provide government-issued ID, verified by PlayDayz admins. Personal details are never shared, and all communication is handled via secure in-app messaging. A community-driven solution PlayDayz founder and busy mother, Mia Shepherd, was inspired by her own childcare challenges. "For years, I saw how difficult school holidays were for working parents… Reliable childcare in Ireland is expensive and limited. PlayDayz makes it easy for parents to share responsibilities, while also giving children more opportunities to play and socialise." Mia wanted to create a community-driven solution for short-term childcare while also addressing parents' growing need for social connections. "Since becoming a mother myself, I've often needed childcare for just a couple of hours… but hiring a childcarer for short stints is unrealistic and expensive. With PlayDayz, parents can take turns within their trusted network - so it's free, fair, and easy for everyone. "More recently, I noticed on social media a real desire for parents to meet with others nearby, but no dedicated platform exists for this purpose. So I'm hoping it gives parents a better social life too!" Available NOW PlayDayz is available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Parents in Ireland can join the PlayDayz community and enjoy a free 30-day trial. What if holding just a few “winning” stocks is riskier than it seems? In this episode, Ben and Cameron explore the hidden dangers of concentrated portfolios and unpack the data that makes a strong case for diversification. Drawing from research by Hendrik Bessembinder, J.P. Morgan, and others, Ben lays out the harsh reality behind individual stock returns: the odds are stacked against long-term success. From skewed return distributions and catastrophic losses to behavioral traps like the endowment effect and familiarity bias, this conversation breaks down why most stock pickers lose—and why diversification remains the only “free lunch” in investing. Whether you're holding onto a single stock for tax reasons, overconfidence, or just inertia, this episode is a must-listen reality check on portfolio risk. They also share thoughts on advisor adoption of indexing, the slow shift in Canada, and how a Rational Reminder YouTube video sparked debate between stock pickers and indexers in the comments section. For anyone navigating concentrated positions—voluntarily or otherwise—this episode is packed with data-driven insight and real-world takeaways. Key Points From This Episode:   (0:00) Welcome to Episode 363: catching up in person and the value of working together in-office. (1:07) Why advisors are slow to adopt indexing—and how culture, compensation, and inertia play a role. (2:58) Demand is rising: indexing awareness among young advisors and investors continues to grow. (4:08) Main topic: The hidden risks of individual stock concentration. (5:40) The Nortel example: taxes, timing, and the illusion of "free" stock. (6:51) Individual stocks are far riskier than most people realize—especially recent winners. (9:09) Most investors hold between 3–7 stocks. Why that's a problem. (11:29) Portfolio concentration = fugu prepared by an amateur chef. (12:45) Diversification reduces risk without reducing expected return. (14:04) JP Morgan's “Agony & Ecstasy” report: 44% of stocks suffer catastrophic losses. (16:26) Why investors overweight the chance of a big win and underweight the risk of losses. (17:07) The reality of skewed returns: a few big winners, many losers. (24:35) The 2023 study on concentrated stock positions: recent top performers underperform the most. (28:40) How many stocks do you need for real diversification? Way more than 20–30. (32:00) Wealth dispersion and the long-term consequences of concentration. (35:24) Why even 100-stock portfolios only beat the market 47.5% of the time. (36:55) Taxes, control, and psychological hurdles make diversifying even harder. (38:14) Diversification depends on your preference for risk and skewness—but beware the odds. (39:08) Behind the scenes: Ben's research process and content development workflow. (43:14) Ben's guest appearance on Morningstar's The Long View. (44:00) Meetups, t-shirt scarcity, and what's next for PWL outreach.   Links From Today's Episode: Meet with PWL Capital: https://calendly.com/d/3vm-t2j-h3p Rational Reminder on iTunes — https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-rational-reminder-podcast/id1426530582. With Drupal 11.2, SDCs now have a concept of variants, to allow for different ways of presenting a component's information. Some component frameworks like Storybook have a somewhat different concept of variants, which is really a set of property value presets that are useful for testing. Variants with Drupal SDCs strike me as being analogous to view modes for content types, in that you can have separate template files for each variant, or you can have conditional logic within a single template based on the variant in use. Our own nicxvan, chx, and some others put some significant work into allowing preprocess hooks to be defined as OOP classes, which bring us a significant step closer to not needing .module files anymore. Hooks (and .module files) are Drupalisms, so removing the need for them is a big improvement for Developer Experience, and makes it easier for developers to get started with Drupal In Drupal 11.2 the module installer has been updated to only rebuild the container after several modules have been installed, which significantly speeds up installing multiple modules at once. Drupal 11.2 also brings us a Recipe Unpack composer extension, so when you composer require a recipe, the dependencies get automatically added to your site's composer.json file, so you can apply and then remove the recipe and still have a fully functional site Package Manager is now a hidden module in Drupal core, which is critical for initiative like Automatic Updates and Project Browser, that the community has been working on for years Drupal core now also supports the next-generation AVIF format, with WEBP as a fallback with servers that don't support generating them Of course there are also a variety of dependency updates as well, for CKEDitor, Symfony, composer and more, as well as too many minor improvements and bugfixes to cover in detail here
