In this episode, Jess and Megan walk us through their recent family getaways to two standout Hyatt properties in the American Southwest: the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale in Arizona and the Hyatt Regency Tamaya in New Mexico. From flights on Southwest® using Companion Passes to family-friendly resort and cultural activities, they break down exactly how they booked, what they loved, and what they'd do differently next time. Grand Hyatt Scottsdale: Renovated Luxury with Resort Vibes Fresh off a huge renovation and rebrand, the former Hyatt Regency Scottsdale is now the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale—and Jess and Megan each had three-night family stays to check it out. The resort has ten pools, including a three-story water slide, a sandy beach area for little kids, and a separate adults-only pool. There's even a rock-climbing wall, putting green, and weekly birds of prey show. The club lounge, while small, included complimentary breakfast, drinks, appetizers, and desserts, and Jess made good use of the free happy hour drinks by taking them poolside. Their biggest warning? Avoid Thursday–Saturday stays if you're sensitive to noise—live music in the lobby those nights is extremely loud and carries to guest rooms. Jess called it the biggest damper on an otherwise enjoyable trip. Hyatt Regency Tamaya: Hidden Gem Near Albuquerque Megan also shares her family's stay at Hyatt Regency Tamaya, located on the Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico. Recently renovated and still a Category 4 Hyatt, it offered unique Native American cultural experiences, incredible mountain views, and tons of free family activities. Megan's family enjoyed nightly s'mores by the fire pit, cultural storytelling sessions, hands-on artisan demos, and a pueblo bread tasting. There are multiple pools, bike rentals, and even a horseback riding stable on-site. This resort is just 30 minutes from Albuquerque's airport and offers easy access to Santa Fe and Petrified Forest National Park not too far away—making it perfect for road trip loops or a more relaxing extended stay. If you're dreaming of a warm-weather escape filled with adventure, learning, and luxury—without the luxury price tag—this episode is packed with inspiration and real-world tips for traveling the Southwest on points. This week's episode is a little different—and a lot of fun. Jess, Pam, and Alex are joined by Traci for a special game of Would You Rather!? – Points Talk Edition. Traci challenges the squad with a lineup of delightfully diabolical travel questions designed to reveal where they really stand when it comes to their points and airline preferences, personal travel quirks, and loyalty trade-offs. From Business Class Woes to Economy Wins The episode kicks off with a tough one: would you rather have a lie-flat seat in business class next to an annoying stranger, or an entire economy row to yourself? At least one of the squad's answers will probably surprise you! Individual Perks vs. Points Value: Globalist or the Award Chart? Next, Traci challenges the group with Hyatt's ultimate tradeoff: would you rather have lifetime Globalist status or a guaranteed fixed award chart for 20 years? Is there dissent or do Alex, Jess, and Pam all come down on the same side on this one? Real-Life Dilemmas and Points Preferences From there, the questions get personal: Learn about Alex's secret grocery-store card confession. Would Jess rather stay at a Park Hyatt in a city she doesn't like (Venice) or a Holiday Inn Express in a city she loves (Tokyo)? Would Alex rather have her beloved Southwest® Companion Pass or 600,000 Hyatt points? Would Pam choose only domestic luxury travel or international budget travel if she could only choose one? Tough Transfers & Redemption Realities The squad also weighs in on (and disagrees about) transferring highly valued points with or without bonuses. Nice Problems to Have They also daydream about future loyalty-program changes they'd love to see, like new Citi cards, United partnering with a second bank, and Capital One adding Alaska as a partner. (A girl can dream!) The Great Collectibles Debate: Ducks or Houses? The episode ends on a light note, with the squad picking which flight souvenirs they'd rather have (rubber ducks or Delft houses) and which ones they'd be more likely to try to get permission to pinch. This episode is full of laughs, strong opinions, and lots of travel daydreaming. Hit play now and see which “would you rather” choices you agree with—and which ones you totally wouldn't!
If Hawai'i is on your bucket list, you need to listen to this episode with Hawaii travel expert Marcie Cheung. Marcie is a family travel blogger and mom of two who's been to Hawaii more than 40 times, staying everywhere from luxury resorts to budget-friendly condos. She helps parents plan unforgettable Hawaii vacations with kids by sharing expert tips, honest reviews, and stress-free itineraries. You can learn more on her website hawaiitravelwithkids.com or follow Marcie on Facebook and Instagram. You can also listen to her podcast, Hawaii Travel Made Easy. Episode Highlights: The most popular tourist islands are: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii (The Big Island) Oahu is best if you can only visit one island and are looking for a mix of experiences and attractions from Pearl Harbor to the Dole Plantation and also city life, nightlife and beaches on the North Shore or Waikiki Maui is also popular for luxury resorts, a quieter vacation, the famous Road to Hana, and also great restaurants and activities Kauai is even more laid back The Big Island is good for those that are looking to be adventurous and take road trips, plus this is where you will find Volcanoes National Park A first time visitor coming from the U.S. should look at least one week and spend it on Oahu because it has such a range of experiences. If you have two weeks, then you can island hop from Oahu to Maui or Kauai. Be active on Oahu and then relax on Maui or Kauai. Keep in mind that when you island hop you still need to fly and deal with all of the airport security, rental car lines, etc. that eats up a lot of a day in travel. The Big Island is really large and you need at least five to seven days. It takes several hours to drive from the beach area to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Expect to spend about $12,000 or more for a family vacation to Hawaii. Airfare from the West Coast is about $500 and closer to $900 from the East Coast. You can use a Southwest Companion Pass or Alaska Companion Pass if you have them. Accommodations keep getting more and more expensive. Midrange hotels are $350-500 and luxury resorts can easily go over $1000 per night. You need to beware about vacation rentals because they are being closely regulated in Honolulu and often they will be cancelled last minute as there are a lot of illegal vacation rentals. If you go with a vacation rental, go with something reputable. Food is also expensive because so much needs to be shipped in on the islands. Plan on spending about $100 a day on food if you are able to mix up going to restaurants and buying groceries or eating at food trucks. Rental car prices are high and you need a rental car for at least a few days on each island. Keep in mind that hotel parking can be $40-60 per night. Activities are also quite pricey, at $300-500 per person. Luaus are at least $200-350 per person. Narrow down your wish list to 2-3 activities and have beach or pool days or exploring on your own for the rest of the time. Minimum stays during winter break can be 7-14 days and this is the most expensive time to visit. When planning road trips or hikes, be sure to map them out to see how far they are and how long it will take to get there. Don't overpack your itinerary. What's New at Disney World? Big Updates & Summer Deals During the media event, Jess and Alex sat in on a panel with Disney execs and Imagineers who revealed upcoming changes and summer promotions—like 50% off tickets for kids (ages 3–9) and free dining plans for guests booking resort packages. They also shared how Disney is working to simplify the experience, with improvements to the Lightning Lane system and new family-focused resort programming. Why Staying On-Property Might Be the Best Deal One of the biggest takeaways? Staying at a Disney resort may cost less than you think—especially when you consider perks like free transportation, early park access, and even character visits right in the hotel. The team shares highlights from a private resort tour, including a peek at value resorts like Art of Animation (with family suites for six!), the moderate Coronado Springs, and the deluxe Boardwalk Inn. Megan also breaks down recent stays at the Swan and Dolphin, All-Star Music, and off-property Hyatts—and why she's team Disney all the way. Making Disney More Affordable with Points & Miles Jess, Alex, and Megan walk through the credit cards they recommend for offsetting the cost of Disney, including the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card for erasing ticket purchases and American Express® Gold Card for dining. They also explain how to book hotels using points for on-site stays. Park Tips, Lightning Lanes & Planning Strategies From early-entry tips to the best times to ride Peter Pan (hint: before 9am), this episode is packed with practical Disney advice. Southwest has announced MAJOR changes including the elimination of free checked bags and a new "Basic" fare. While much of this is very disappointing, in reality, it only requires a few minor adjustments for those of us flying Southwest using travel rewards. I explain the changes and what shifts you need to make in this episode. After recording this podcast, Southwest did confirm that they will "introduce variable redemption rates across higher-demand and lower-demand flights." My best guess is that points will be worth less for higher demand flights, pushing the points prices higher, and points will be worth more for lower demand flights, pushing the points price lower. I think it means more variability in the value of the points, so it will cost more points to book high-demand routes and less points for low-demand routes. Now is the PERFECT time to join Families Fly Free, as I'm getting ready to launch a bigger and BETTER version of membership that goes BEYOND travel rewards. We're sharing our mishaps not just to entertain you (though some of these stories are pretty amusing), but to help you learn from our experiences so you can navigate the points and miles world more smoothly. Real Mistakes from Real Travelers First up, Alex talks about the time she accidentally set her credit card payment to the minimum due instead of the full statement balance. It's a simple checkbox mistake that led to unnecessary interest charges. It's a crucial reminder to double-check your autopay settings, ensuring you're not paying more than you should. Pam, often nicknamed 'Quick Start Pam,' dives into several of her own memorable mistakes, from overlooking important details like the Chase 5/24 rule to booking a hotel for the wrong date. She highlights the importance of slowing down and double-checking every detail, especially when dealing with bookings across different time zones. Learning the Hard Way Hear about Jess's adventure of nearly leaving her companion behind on a flight to Costa Rica because she delayed adding a companion to her Southwest flight. This story underscores the importance of managing travel bookings proactively, especially when using features like the Southwest Companion Pass. Takeaways to Make You a Better Traveler Through these tales, we underline a universal truth: mistakes happen, but they don't have to define your travel experience. With each slip-up, we've learned valuable lessons about paying attention to details, the importance of confirmation checks, and the benefits of being meticulously organized. Click here to apply for the Chase Sapphire Cards we refer to in this episode - we used these points to book all our Hyatt hotels. And if you've already got one of the Chase Sapphire cards, you'll want to apply for these business cards, linked here. All other best cards (including the Capital One Venture and Venture X cards which you can use to erase travel expenses) are linked here!In this episode - Not all trips go as planned. In fact, some of them never even make it off the drawing room floor (so to speak). In this episode we're sharing our thought process as we attempted to plan a family trip to Yellowstone, but (spoiler alert) realized halfway through we had to pivot and save Yellowstone for another time. We get a lot of questions about how we plan our trips, and today, we're sharing our planning process for our upcoming family trip to Yellowstone. First, we discuss the decision between driving and flying to Yellowstone. From Phoenix, driving takes about 15 hours, which can be broken up with an overnight stay in Zion National Park. Flying, on the other hand, offers the convenience of using points, but with no direct flights from Phoenix to Bozeman or Jackson, connections are necessary. We explore options like Southwest, United, and Delta, and share our experience applying for a United business card to cover the flight costs.Next, we dive into lodging options within Yellowstone. Staying inside the park can save you the hassle of daily long drives, but accommodations like Mammoth Springs and the Old Faithful Inn fill up fast. We explain how to secure your reservations, including booking a year in advance and monitoring for cancellations. Our Yellowstone travel itinerary also covers the challenges of using points for accommodations. We talk about balancing the use of points and cash, considering properties in West Yellowstone and Jackson. While finding points-eligible hotels like the Holiday Inn in West Yellowstone and various Hilton and Marriott options in Jackson, we also emphasize the importance of having the right credit cards to earn those valuable points. As we finalize our plans, we realize the need for flexibility. With two major international trips already planned for next year, we decide to shift our Yellowstone trip to 2026. This allows us ample time to open new credit cards, meet minimum spends, and earn the points needed for a more cost-effective vacation. Plus, we'll have the Southwest Companion Pass again by then, making flights even more affordable. In the meantime, we pivot to an alternative plan: a road trip to Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe. This trip provides a mix of stunning natural beauty and relaxation by the lake, breaking up the summer heat with a memorable adventure.Throughout this episode, we highlight the importance of early planning, being flexible with travel dates, and using points strategically. Whether you're looking to escape to Yellowstone or considering other family-friendly destinations, our insights and detailed Yellowstone travel itinerary will help you plan a trip that's both fun and budget-friendly.Tune in to learn how to navigate the challenges of planning a family trip to Yellowstone, from securing flights and accommodations to maximizing your points and miles. We dive into the nuances of podcast length and what makes an extended episode worthwhile. With personal anecdotes and industry insights, we explore scenarios where longer podcasts not only work but captivate. From celebrity-packed interviews, like Julian Edelman's deep dive with Ernie Adams, to niche passions such as travel hacks and Taylor Swift conspiracy theories, we illustrate why content, not length, dictates a podcast's success. Whether it's sports, politics, or entertainment, we discuss how established shows and A-listers like SmartLess can pull off hour-long episodes that leave listeners wanting more. So, if you've ever pondered the perfect podcast duration or sought to justify a lengthier listening experience, tune in as we affirm that as long as it's engaging, it's the right length. I'm joined by Southwest expert Lyn Mettler, and she's breaking down everything you need to know about the coveted Southwest Companion Pass. In 2015, she discovered how to fly her family of 4 free to all the places she'd written about, going from one car trip a year to flying free six times every year around the US, Europe, and the Caribbean. She now teaches hundreds of families this same simple system through her Families Fly Free membership, where her mission is to bring families together through travel. Tune in this week to discover why people go nuts over the Southwest Companion Pass. We are discussing whether working to qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass is the right fit for your travel plans, what can go wrong when trying to earn this valuable points-travel perk, and be sure to come back next week when Lyn will be sharing her tips for earning your Companion Pass using a repeatable but tricky process. Welcome back, travel hackers! It's just Alex and Jess here today. Pam is enjoying her trip to Costa Rica. Considering today's all about the Southwest Companion Pass, her timing is impeccable – Pam's not the biggest fan of Southwest. Now, imagine the thrill of having a companion fly alongside you for nearly free (just the taxes and fees) for up to two years. That's the magic of the Southwest Companion Pass. If you've yet to experience this, it's one of the best deals in the travel hacking world. But how do you get this coveted pass? You could fly a hundred one-way trips in a year, but who's got the time? The more practical route involves amassing 135,000 Southwest points within a year. Luckily, Southwest offers a variety of credit cards, and the points earned from the credit card welcome offers count towards the points needed for the Companion Pass. Timing is crucial. Think about beginning this journey towards the end of the year. Why? Because by the time you hit your minimum spend, a new year beckons. This strategy ensures you make the most of the pass for nearly two full years. And hey, if you're strategizing with a partner, there's a way both of you can earn the Companion Pass simultaneously. It's all about the game plan! Are you ready to discover how to unlock one of the greatest travel hacks out there? Hit play to discover the ins and outs of Southwest's Companion Pass. Happy travels!
