The Stews started their musical journey as a band a mere 5 years ago. But in those 5 short years they've released an EP and two albums, and gathered a small army of fans. They have performed hundreds of shows over the last 3 years and are gearing up for more on their "Who's Hungry" Fall Tour. Preston Hall and Wyatt Griffith were nice enough to stop by the show and talk all about The Stews. Doc, Wyatt and Preston, talk about starting out in music, meeting at Auburn University, renting a storage place to play drums, the first band jam session in Wyatt's basement, recording the first EP, moving to Charleston, recording new music and much more. Meanwhile on the rest of the show Mike and Doc decide that history exists despite what Tyler Herro says, and Mike is going to eat Altoona pizza. Jesse explores the value of financial priorities and the balance between spending and saving with guests Diania Merriam, Justin Peters, Bill Yount, Jeremy Schneider, Doc G, and Joe Saul-Sehy. Diania highlights the “iceberg principle” of stealth wealth—how true wealth is often what you don't see, like deferred purchases and unspent money. Justin shares a personal story about the cost and memories of boat ownership, emphasizing the lesson to buy utility and rent luxury. Bill discusses the different seasons of life in relation to frugality and spending, while Jeremy reflects on ingrained money habits persisting despite sudden wealth. Doc G and Joe Saul-Sehy add their unique perspectives on personal finance and the emotional relationship with money. Together, they unpack how financial decisions shape our lives, the importance of aligning spending with values, and the lessons learned from both scrimping and splurging. Key Takeaways: • Financial freedom doesn't always come with a clear sense of how to enjoy money meaningfully. • Renting luxury experiences can be more satisfying and economical than owning them. • Time, health, and family often become more valuable than money as people grow older. • Community and shared experiences often bring more satisfaction than expensive possessions. Lifestyle upgrades need to be aligned with personal values to feel meaningful. • Former spendthrifts can struggle just as much with letting go of financial vigilance. • Understanding your money story is key to shifting your habits and mindset with intention. Even the financially savvy can be blindsided by lifestyle creep and emotional spending. Welcome back, wine friends! This episode is all about the rebels — the wild ones — the winemakers who've ripped up the rulebook and gone their own way. We're diving deep into the world of declassified cult wines: the bottles that said "no thanks" to tradition-bound wine laws, and yet, somehow became some of the most expensive, most desired, and most obsessively followed wines on the planet. But before we get to the juicy stuff, let's set the scene. You know those cryptic acronyms on European wine labels — AOC, DOCG, and even Qualitätswein? They're steeped in history, tradition, and legal frameworks that protect the where, the what, and the how of a wine. They're there to ensure quality, consistency, and authenticity. And yet, to some, those same laws can feel more like shackles than structure. Want to plant Syrah in Bordeaux? Or fancy making an orange wine in Chianti? You can't under AOC or DOCG rules. Even if your wine is mind-blowingly good, if it doesn't fit the mould, it gets dumped in the “Vin de France” or “Vino da Tavola” pile. So in this episode, we raise a glass to the misfits, the rule-breakers, and the game-changers — winemakers who said, “Forget the label, let the wine speak for itself.” We'll travel from the storied vineyards of Bordeaux to the wild Loire, up through Tuscany, and back again — featuring the most expensive wine in the world, a Brunello scandal, and some unicorn bottles you've probably seen worshipped on Instagram. Throughout this episode, whilst telling the tales of some of the most iconic and rebellious wines, you'll also learn more about: vine density plantings in Bordeaux, the impact of phylloxera, the historic grape varieties of Bordeaux, what Bordeaux might have tasted like before the 1855 classification, the scandal of Brunellogate, the difference between Sangiovese in Montalcino vs Chianti, Chianti's rigid and outdated regulations, and a few legends of the natural wine movement. Get ready for trailblazing tales, creative freedom in a bottle, and a reminder that some of the best wines in the world never needed permission to be great. Episode Chapters: 3.30: Introducing Liber Pater – the most expensive wine in the world 10.00: Introducing Louis-Benjamin - Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fume Asteroide – the holy grail of Sauvignon Blanc 15.30: Introducing Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera Toscana Sangiovese – The wine making the most dramatic exit from Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 23.00: Introducing Le Pergole Torte from Montevertine – a 100% Sangiovese from the Chianti Classico region 26.10: Introducing the wines from Domaine des Miroirs in the Jura region – a Japanese winemaker producing ‘unicorn wines'. 32.30: Introducing a declassified super affordable wine for contrast: Gran Cerdo from Gonzalo Grijalba
The Moon City Masters have been putting out music for the last 5 years, but Jordan and Talor Steinberg have been playing together for the last 20 years! They're currently working on new music with Kevin Comeau of Crown Lands and they were nice enough to stop by the show! Jordan, Talor and Doc talk about basketball (and the lack of knowledge of basketball), seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers, learning to play music, starting bands together, working on new material and much much more! Dr. Grumet also introduces his second book, The Purpose Code, released in early 2025. He distinguishes between “Big P” purpose (audacious, goal-driven pursuits) and “little p” purpose (process-oriented joy), advocating for the latter to enhance happiness and longevity. This episode offers physicians and listeners practical strategies to align their lives with meaningful activities, emphasizing community and personal fulfillment over financial gain.Three Actionable Takeaways:Focus on Process, Not Goals – Embrace activities you love for their own sake, like podcasting or reading, rather than tying purpose to specific outcomes like fame or wealth.Leverage Available Time – Use your free time—five to six hours daily per the U.S. Time Study—to pursue purposeful activities, even alongside a disliked job.Build Meaning First – Address past narratives (hero vs. victim stories) to establish a sense of “enough,” paving the way for joyful, purpose-driven actions in the present.About the Show:The Physician's Guide to Doctoring covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. On the heels of my trip with a group of Patrons to Campania, I wanted to do a show on Taurasi while it was still fresh in my mind. Taurasi, a small (472 ha / 1,166 acres) DOCG region, is indisputably one of Italy's greatest red wines along with Barolo, Barbaresco, Brunello, Chianti, Vino Nobile, and Montefalco Sagrantino. Taurasi, made of the ancient Aglianico grape, is in Campania, more specifically in hills northeast of Irpinia/Avellino and is centered around the town of Taurasi, a small town with a 10th-century castle that was rebuilt by the Normans. Over the 17 towns within the denomination soils and altitudes range dramatically. Higher altitudes create complex, more acidic styles due to a longer growing season with great diurnal swings. Towns with more clay create extremely tannic wines, while those with sand have certain warmth and fruitiness that makes them easy to drink in their youth. There are a multitude of styles and, with soils in the region layered like a lasagna, the flavors you get from the Aglianico grape depend largely on the site on which it grows. Aglianico is a misunderstood grape, as is Taurasi as a wine. Aglianico is a red with complex, terroir driven flavors of dark fruit, red fruit, spice, black pepper notes, and excellent acidity and tannin. Taurasi, made from a biotype of Aglianico that is particularly dark-skinned, small berried and flavorful makes exquisite wines that have the aging capability of a Barolo or Bordeaux. The grape translates the terroir into the bottle and both where the grapes grow and who makes the wine determines the style – it's an area you could explore for ages and keep discovering new expressions of Aglianico. In fact, Taurasi is called the “Barolo of the South” for nuance and depth of flavor, and variation of its terroir. In this show I cover the extensive history of the region, with all its ups and downs, the climate, altitudes, and land and then discuss the expression of the Aglianico grape and why it makes such fascinating wines. If you haven't had a Taurasi, get on it. Vis a vis other top wines, it is insanely affordable (top wines are less than US$100) and it is a wine that will hold your interest with every sip! Certainly for its history and for its quality, Taurasi is one of the great wines of the world. Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. Sicily has been making wine for centuries, historically for local consumption or for selling to other wine regions in bulk to enhance their wines. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, “modern” Sicilian wine production evolved, creating terroir-driven wines with elegance and finesse that the world has embraced. Wine Director and Sommelier Melissa Hemingway brings her passionate expertise to this warm, insightful conversation about the evolving world of wine at Bonita Bay Club. After nearly seven years curating exceptional wine experiences, Melissa reveals how member preferences and global travel trends shape the club's diverse wine program. The spotlight shines on Sicily – Italy's largest wine-producing region – as Melissa's top recommendation for an underappreciated wine destination. Her enthusiasm for Sicilian wines, particularly the special Cerasula di Vittoria (Sicily's only DOCG), reveals her commitment to helping members discover hidden gems that deliver exceptional quality without breaking the bank. For those eager to explore, she recommends readily available producers Planeta and Dona Fugata.Perhaps most surprising is Melissa's revelation about the explosive growth of non-alcoholic wines. What began as ordering a single case per season has evolved into maintaining six different varieties that consistently sell out. This trend has become so significant that non-alcoholic options will soon have their own dedicated section on the Club's wine list.Melissa dismantles wine intimidation by encouraging authentic preferences and challenging the assumption that price equals quality. She points out that heavily marketed wines often allocate substantial funds to advertising rather than improving what's in the bottle, while championing small family producers who invest everything into creating exceptional wines without massive marketing campaigns. The Club's wine list itself reflects Melissa's collaborative philosophy, with 65% of selections coming directly from member suggestions. Her Thirsty Thursday events continue year-round, offering informal education opportunities that become particularly intimate and conversational during summer months.Whether you're a seasoned oenophile or just beginning your wine journey, Melissa's approach invites everyone to explore with confidence. Join us for Thirsty Thursday at 5:00 PM throughout the summer and discover your next favorite bottle with expert guidance from someone who believes wine should delight, not intimidate.

Send us a textWine lovers, prepare for a revelation that might have you sprinting to Trader Joe's! We've uncovered an astonishing value hidden on their shelves - a $14.99 bottle that rivals wines selling for more than twice that price. This Trader Joe's Platinum Reserve from Italy's prestigious Nizza DOCG region isn't your typical private label wine. It comes from Bersano Estate, a 123-year-old family-owned winery whose comparable bottles fetch $35 under their own label. What makes this find spectacular is its pedigree - from one of only 18 villages in the elite Nizza designation, produced from their finest Generala vineyard, and aged meticulously following strict DOCG standards (minimum 30 months with at least 12 in barrel). The Barbera grape has a fascinating history in Italy's Piedmont region. While Nebbiolo (of Barolo fame) gets the glory, Barbera produces wonderful everyday wines that, when grown in premier sites like Nizza and treated with respect, develop remarkable complexity. This 2019 vintage shows beautiful balance with dark, brooding fruit rather than bright juiciness - perfect for pairing with grilled steaks, roasts, or barbecue as summer approaches. The wine's depth comes from proper aging and traditional winemaking methods (80% in large old barrels, 20% in newer oak). How did such a premium bottle end up at Trader Joe's for $20 less than retail? Likely a combination of challenging wine market conditions and TJ's savvy buying team. Whatever the reason, this represents one of the best wine values we've encountered this year. Have you found similar hidden gems at Trader Joe's? Share your discoveries and let us know what you think of this Italian bargain!Check us out at www.cheapwinefinder.comor email us at podcast@cheapwinefinder.com

Follow along as we discuss the journey from following traditional career paths to pursuing passions, and the importance of purpose over mere financial goals. Doc G shares insights from his personal experiences as a hospice physician turned blogger, podcaster, and author. He emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to life that integrates purpose, happiness, and financial wellness. Doc G shares his concepts of meaning and purpose, emphasizing the importance of personal narratives in shaping our happiness. He distinguishes between Big P and Little P purposes, advocating for a more process-oriented approach to fulfillment. Discover the significance of community and connection in achieving happiness, and how to address the common anxiety surrounding one's search for purpose. Ultimately, Doc G encourages listeners to engage in activities that light them up, suggesting that true fulfillment comes from enjoying the process rather than fixating on audacious goals.GUEST BIO: Doc G's interest in becoming a doctor ignited when his father, an oncologist, died unexpectedly in the prime of life. This profound and life-shaping boyhood loss compelled him to dedicate his early career to the art of medicine. He was an Assistant Professor, first at Northwestern University and then at The University of Chicago. He has been a medical director of several nursing homes, started multiple palliative care programs in extended care facilities, and is an associate medical director for a hospice provider. After shaping his personal finance plan around the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) movement, Doc G began a new chapter by becoming semi-retired by the age of 45. Today in addition to his work as a hospice doctor, he intertwines medical insight and financial wisdom in writing and speaking engagements that explore the topics of wealth, abundance, and financial independence to help people live meaningful lives. He publishes the Earn and Invest podcast about personal finance and wellness, and has also run several small businesses including a concierge medical practice, an online art gallery, and is the author of two books, including his latest The Purpose Code, How to Unlock Meaning, Maximize Happiness, and Leave a Lasting Legacy, published in January 2025.Connect & Learn Morehttps://jordangrumet.com/https://www.earnandinvest.com/The Purpose Code – How to Unlock Meaning, Maximize Happiness, and Leave a Lasting Legacyhttps://amzn.to/4hizM6BTaking Stock – A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Lifehttps://amzn.to/4kOj2HtRESOURCESHappiness = Freedom + Meaningfulness on RVE #383https://therventrepreneur.com/rve383/Early Retirement Nowhttps://earlyretirementnow.com/The Skeptic's Guide to FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early)https://nickwolny.com/financial-independence-guide~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~THE RV ENTREPRENEURhttps://therventrepreneur.com~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Join the RVE community on Facebook!https://www.facebook.com/groups/therventrepreneurcommunityConnect with RVE on all your favorite socialshttps://therventrepreneur.com/connectGot questions or comments for our hosts? This week I take a fresh look at European Classification Systems, going into detail on the history of how and why they evolved, what the current EU scheme is based on, and what the major wine nations' systems are structured (and how they differ from what the EU would like them to look like!). I discuss: How Europe classified its wines to protect the names of specific products and link them to their place of origin, to the benefit of consumers and producers. A history of wine classifications from the monks in medieval Burgundy to the winemakers of Tokaj in the 1600s to Chianti, Port, and Bordeaux in the 1700s and 1800s. A detailed look at the evolution of the French classification system. I go through the steps that the French took to prevent fraud, protect the origin of their wines, and ultimately create the system off which the EU system is based. I address the EU system with its two main categories: -Wine without a geographic origin (table wine) -Wine with a geographic origin: Protected Geographical Indication (PGI): At least 85% of the grapes used have to come exclusively from the geographical area where the wine is actually made. These wines cover large areas, and a lot of grapes and winemaking methods are permitted. There is only a minor influence of place of origin Protected Designation of Origin (PDO): Every part of the production, processing and preparation process must take place in the specific region. Grapes have to come exclusively from the geographical area where the wine is made. Origin and terroir are essential to the identity of the wine. Then I review the major countries' classification categories France: Vin de France=Table wine IGP, indication géographique protégée (PGI) AOP=appellation d'origine protégée, often called AOC (contrôlée) (PDO) Italy: Vino=Table Wine IGP=indicazione geografica protetta, producers frequently use the old IGT = indicazione geografica tipica (PGI) DOC = denominazione di origine controllata (PDO) DOCG = denominazione di origine controllata e garantita (PDO) DOP = denominazione di origine protetta, the new name, conforming to the EU standard that includes DOC and DOCG. DOP is rarely used (PDO) Spain: Vino de España=Table wine IGP / VT = indicación geográfica protegida, usually called vino de la tierra (VT) (PGI) VC = vino de calidad con indicación geográfica (PDO) DO (DOP) = denominación de origen, sometimes called DOP (PDO) DOCa = denominación de origen calificada (PDO) VP = vino de pago (PDO) Germany Deutscher Wein =Table wine Landwein =PGI Qualitätswein (also called Qba from the 13 regions, PDO) Prädikatswein – Prädikat means special attribute and refers to the ripeness of the grapes and the type of harvest. Pradikat levels: Dry or sweet: Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese Sweet (expensive and rare): Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, Eiswein Other terms: Trocken is dry, Halbtrocken is “Half Dry” or “Off-Dry, “Feinherb” is an unofficial term for off-dry wine The VDP is a German marketing organization that includes many of the country's top producers. Producers can use the VDP eagle and the VDP classifications WITH “Qualitätswein” or “Prädikatswein” · Gutswein: First wines of a wine year to be bottled and sold, Estate-grown grapes · Ortsweine: Village wines · Erste Lage: Premier Cru wine from first-class vineyards · Grosse Lage: Grand cru or highest quality German vineyards. Dry wines within this category are called Grosse Gewächs or GG Portugal (I don't discuss in the show because it follows the French/EU model) Vinho=Table Wine IGP = indicação geográfica protegida, often called vinho regional (PGI) DOP = denominação de origem protegida, still sometimes called DOC, denominação de origem controlada (PDO) _________________________________________________ Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. What a beautiful wine! You may not have heard of Greco di Tufo, and you may not be familiar with wines from Campania in southern Italy, but we are hoping that we can change that! Greco is an ancient wine grape, brought to the area around Naples by the Greeks thousands of years ago, that nearly went extinct in this area of Italy. Thankfully, some hard working farmers and heritage wine making projects kept the wine alive, and we are the lucky benefactors today. There are only four DOCG designations in Campania - that is the highest designation of Italian wine - and Greco di Tufo is one of them. The name Tufo comes from a tiny town, but also from the volcanic soil, called tuff, that gives Greco di Tufo its distinct and beautiful flavor. If you are a white wine lover, and/or a seafood lover, this wine is a must try. Why do so many in early retirement struggle with happiness? We know you've told yourself, “Once I hit FIRE, I'll be living the dream! Every day will be like a vacation.” This is what Mindy was telling herself for years before becoming financially independent, and once she hit her goal, she realized life's same problems still exist. If you're FI already, this may sound familiar. So, how do you enjoy the path to early retirement so that when you reach your financial goal, the party doesn't stop? Jordan Grumet, AKA Doc G, practiced full-time medicine for years but wasn't completely satisfied, even with financial success. After reflecting on his “purpose,” he found that hospice medicine brought him true fulfillment. Through conversations with patients on their deathbeds, Jordan uncovered a common thread: most regrets stemmed from not living a purposeful life, regardless of financial achievement. In his new book, The Purpose Code, Jordan walks you through exercises that uncover your view on purpose, success, financial freedom, and what it means to truly “win” in life. His goal? Make sure you enjoy every day on the path to financial freedom so that when you get there, you know exactly how to live the life you love. If you want to reach FIRE happy, less stressed, and full of energy to live your early retirement life, we've got what the doctor ordered. In This Episode We Cover Why even the wealthiest people in the world are still so unhappy (and what they're missing) Why money is NOT the only tool you can use to find lifelong happiness The four “anchors” you can use to find your life's purpose before it's too late How to enjoy the path to financial freedom without burning out or pushing through unhappiness The number one thing in life that leads to humans being happy (it's completely free) And So Much More!
