That's all i will say for now cause nothing will justify the tsunami of A class competition heading our way.  In today's episode, we journey back in time to explore the remarkable life and legacy of Mitsuyo Maeda, a true pioneer of Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.Episode Highlights:Born in 1878 in Funagata, Japan, Mitsuyo Maeda's journey from a small village to becoming a global martial arts icon is nothing short of inspirational. As a young man, he trained under Judo's founder, Jigoro Kano, and quickly established himself as one of the most talented and innovative martial artists of his time.Maeda embarked on a journey that would take him across the world, showcasing the power and effectiveness of Judo. He became a traveling martial artist, captivating audiences in countries as far-reaching as Europe, North America, and even the Amazon rainforest. But it was Maeda's fateful encounter with a young Brazilian named Carlos Gracie in 1917 that changed the course of martial arts history forever. Together, they laid the foundation for what would later become Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art that emphasized leverage, technique, and strategy over sheer strength.Support the show

“…a mad, wicked folly…” — Queen Victoria about the notion of women having the right to vote“When I watched a policeman fell a girl to the ground and kick her across the platform, my only regret was that I had no weapon with which to strike him an effective blow.” — Eunice G. Murray“£100 to any man who can defeat him. Notwithstanding the physical disadvantages against heavier men (for Tani weighs 9 stone only), Apollo will pay any living man twenty guineas who Tani fails to defeat in fifteen minutes: Professional champion wrestlers specially invited.” — Music Hall advertisement “Physical force seems to be the only thing in which women have not demonstrated their equality to men, and whilst we are waiting for the evolution which is slowly taking place and bringing about that equality, we might just as well take time by the forelock and use ju-jitsu." — Edith GarrudThese days, pretty much any time I run into a movie or a book or a tv series with a strong woman among the lead characters, almost inevitably I run into comments by people whining about it, basically implying that strong women are a Hollywood invention created purely to satisfy some PC, affirmative action requirement. What we play with today is not that kind of a story. There's nothing fictional about the rather intense ladies starring in this episode. One of them, in particular, Edith Garrud is Exhibit A when it comes to real life tough women from humanity's past. Our story takes place at the very beginning of the 1900s in England, and it weaves together some rather unlikely elements: how the upper classes' fear of crime associated with urbanization led to the popularization of Asian martial arts, how the very legitimate request for women to have the right to vote unleashed some rather extreme violence… We'll talk about suffragettes and terrorism, the early days of pro wrestling, Sherlock Holmes, and some Japanese expats (including that Mitsuyo Maeda destined to set in motion a sequence of events leading to the creation of modern MMA and the UFC.) And most of all, we'll talk about Edith Garrud, one of the very first women to become a martial arts teacher and to star in the granddaddy of martial arts movies. I talk to Robert Drysdale. He is a storied competitor, ADCC Champion, Mundials Champion and has also coached many other legends of the sport. Also a History major, he has spent his recent time delving into the history of the sport for a documentary entitled Closed Guard: The Origins of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil that traces the journey of Japanese Judoka travelling to Brazil and the formation of the sport we know today involving tough guys, the circus, outlaws, gambling, marketing & promotion and of course plenty of prize fights along the way. The entire saga makes for a fascinating tale that leaves us with the question of where the good and bad of the story rests between the truth and the myth. After all was it Mitsuyo Maeda that made the legend of Carlos Gracie or Carlos Gracie that made the legend of Mitsuyo Maeda?

Without Mitsuyo Maeda, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu would be very different from what we know today. Maeda, also known as Count Koma, started training Judo under the legendary Kano Jigoro. After gaining the respect of his peer, he started traveling the world with the sole purpose of demonstrating the efficacy of Judo. During his time in Brazil, he met and trained a fourteen year old Carlos Gracie. Maeda taught Carlos a lot about Judo and the philosophy of self defense. Anyone who trains Brazilian Jiu Jitsu owes a great debt to Mitsuyo Maeda and the fire he started in the minds and hearts of the Gracie family. In this episode we learn about the life and impact that Count Koma had on the martial art we all love.

Dr. Jose Tufy Cairus, a historian and professor at Brazil's Federal Institute of Santa Catarina, is one of the few scholars studying Brazilian jiu-jitsu jistory. Cairus' father was involved with Brazilian judo for decades, and the author himself trained with Carlson Gracie -- something you'll hear all about in this interview! You'll learn what he things the biggest misconceptions about BJJ history are; who the first Japanese person to teach Kodokan Judo in Brazil was; who the first woman to train was; what the differences were between Jigoro Kano's judo at the time and the jiu-jitsu taught by Mitsuyo Maeda (who wasn't the only one using the "Count Koma" name); the critical role of Donato Pires dos Reis and Jacinto Ferro; the importance of Brazil's Navy in promoting jiu-jitsu, and how Maeda taught to the Brazilian Navy in the Amazon, including Luis Soto; Geo Omori and Takeo Yano's contributions to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; how Brazil's history, including the transition from the monarchy to the Old Republic to the dictatorship to the authoritarian estado novo affected jiu-jitsu -- especially a harrowing story about when Robson and Carlson were arrested by the Brazilian military government, and how they got out with the help of Helio Gracie & Helio Vigio.
