As a young man, he trained under Judo's founder, Jigoro Kano, and quickly established himself as one of the most talented and innovative martial artists of his time.Maeda embarked on a journey that would take him across the world, showcasing the power and effectiveness of Judo. He became a traveling martial artist, captivating audiences in countries as far-reaching as Europe, North America, and even the Amazon rainforest. But it was Maeda's fateful encounter with a young Brazilian named Carlos Gracie in 1917 that changed the course of martial arts history forever. Together, they laid the foundation for what would later become Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art that emphasized leverage, technique, and strategy over sheer strength.Support the show

This week we talk to Master Carlos Machado (Jiu jitsu 8th degree). We discuss Master Machado's career as a BJJ practitioner and what he contributes to being successful in an art that most quit in-The price we pay if we are to go beyond mediocrity and brain fog, -The belief that jiu jitsu is the answer for law enforcement. -All Police Officers should be blue belts. -If you were only given an hour a week to train, what would you focus on to get the most out of the hour?-Methodology for Jiu JitsuCarlos Machado was born on the 9th of November, 1963 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is the eldest of the Machado brothers (cousins to the Gracie's from Carlos Gracie Senior's sister in law, Luiza Machado). Carlos began his training at the legendary Gracie academy where he was taught and mentored directly by his uncle, Grandmaster Carlos Gracie. After moving to the southern part of Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana, Carlos Machado was then taught and mentored directly by the legendary Rolls Gracie. Carlos Machado decided to follow his father's footsteps and study law at the University, he moved to Uncle Carlos Gracie Senior's home. Carlos Machado lived with Carlos Gracie Sr. for over 5 years from 1982 until 1987 and during that period Carlos Gracie became a huge influence on Machado's life. In 1990, Carlos and John Machado joined Rigan and also moved to Southern California. The original idea was to help Rorion Gracie and the Gracie family build and establish their academy (where Rorion and Rickson Gracie were the head instructors along with Royce Gracie).Chuck Norris had always been a martial arts enthusiast and wanted to learn Jiu Jitsu From The Source so he began training Jiu Jitsu with the Machado brothers to add his existing martial arts knowledge. In 1995 Carlos Machado had an amazing opportunity with Chuck Norris and decided to move to Dallas, Texas to start filming Walker - Texas Ranger. Chuck invited Carlos to relocate with him and Carlos decided that it was time to spread Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to Texas and surrounding middle America areas. Chuck helped Carlos get established in his new home called Dallas, Texas. Carlos Machado appeared in dozens of episodes of the “Walker, Texas Ranger” series during that period, portraying several different characters and usually getting beat up by his very pupil. On one occasion Chuck put a little too much pressure on a choke he held too long and in one of the scenes put his teacher Carlos Machado to sleep. Carlos Machado is a multi Hall of Fame Instructor of Jiu Jitsu and known in Texas and the Southwest region of the United States as the “Godfather of Jiu-Jitsu”. Before Carlos Machado relocated to the Dallas Fort Worth, Texas area, nobody was teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Today most of the BJJ lineage in Southwest area can today can be traced back to Carlos Machado. The Carlos Machado Jiu Jitsu Academy is located in North Dallas, Farmers Branch, TX where he personally teaches all of his students from kids, teens to women and men. What if you learned today that you could fail your way to success? That would be a powerful mindset shift, right? It would make all of the mistakes you've made up until now seem like GOOD things - because in truth, they ARE. That's the kind of mindset that will lead you to financial freedom in the long run. What's your mindset, you might ask? Basically, your mindset is the sum of the attitudes, stories, and beliefs you have about the world… and one of the most important mindsets towards your eventual success or failure is how you THINK about success and failure. For example - do you view failure as a bad thing? Or a good thing? You might think that's a ridiculous question and say - “hey, of course failure is bad… I want to succeed!” Your mindset might be: “OK, I want to be successful. So that means I need to avoid doing “failure activities” and instead make sure I'm doing “success activities”. Then you keep searching for the “right system” or the “right business model” or the “right niche” that's going to lead you to success… and you never leave research mode! I used to do the same thing - but that mindset didn't take me anywhere. It certainly didn't take me to my current levels of success. It required personal development and really looking at the psychology of success in order to shift my mindset to one that was empowering me to attract the results and lifestyle I desired. The mindset that WILL make you successful is one of failing forward, or failing your way to success. This more accurate and empowering mindset that you achieve by developing personally focuses on doing and execution rather than researching. And trust yourself that you'll learn A LOT more by trying and failing than you will by reading and researching and listening to podcasts. Why? Because there are different types of knowledge… and intellectual knowledge (knowledge you get from research) is just one kind. Another type of knowledge, experiential knowledge, comes from actually trying things in the real world and learning by doing. Often times this powerful knowledge comes from trial and error. And this type of knowledge is very powerful. If you can combine these two types of learning (with a heavy focus on the doing/experiential knowledge) you'll find that nothing can stop you on your journey to success. Just remember: when you fail, you learn. And when you learn, you get better. This is the secret to success! That's why Carlos Gracie, an incredibly successful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, said: “There is no losing in jiu-jitsu. Either you win or you learn.” There are a couple of key resources beyond this video that might be useful towards shifting your mindset towards, “I'm going to fail my way to success”. One is the book “Mindset” by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck. In it, she shows that everything in life is a skill, and when you have an open mindset about getting better (especially through doing), you CAN change your life for the better. Another is the book “Go For No”. This one really helped me make the shift from being a researcher to being a doer. A final book that will be really useful for you is “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield. This is an extremely powerful book that will change your life for the better if you apply the lessons within it.

O primeiro livro é a Dieta do Abdômen. _

Professor Amal Easton began his martial arts journey over 30 years ago with the study of Muay Thai. He has studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu extensively since 1992. After earning his degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Professor Easton moved to Rio De Janeiro in 1995. One of few Americans living in Rio de Janeiro, he trained and competed out of the Gracie Barra Academy for three and a half years. Professor Easton was only the seventh person to receive a black belt from the legendary Renzo Gracie. Renzo and Carlos Gracie, Jr., have endorsed his ability and authorized him to teach the art. Professor Easton was the first American Black Belt National Champion in 2002, is a multiple Pan American and Worlds Masters champion, and one of the original American pioneers of the art. Professor Easton has had the honor of studying extensively with such legendary talent as Professors Helio “Soneca” Moreira, Roberto “Gordo” Correira, Rillion Gracie, Eduardo “Veio” De Lima, Ze “Leao” Teixeira, and more. Some of Professor Easton’s students include notable competitors Eliot Marshall (first American to win Pan Ams at blue, purple, and brown belts), Shane Carwin, Brendan Schaub, Nate Marquardt, Duane Ludwig, Nick Klein, and many more. Professor Easton started his first school, Easton Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Boulder, in 1998. He currently owns and operates five schools in the Denver region and is partnered in three more. When Professor Easton is not on the mat, he is generally outdoors and has spent his life skiing, kayaking, hang gliding, mountain biking, and dirt biking.
I talk to Robert Drysdale. He is a storied competitor, ADCC Champion, Mundials Champion and has also coached many other legends of the sport. Also a History major, he has spent his recent time delving into the history of the sport for a documentary entitled Closed Guard: The Origins of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil that traces the journey of Japanese Judoka travelling to Brazil and the formation of the sport we know today involving tough guys, the circus, outlaws, gambling, marketing & promotion and of course plenty of prize fights along the way. The entire saga makes for a fascinating tale that leaves us with the question of where the good and bad of the story rests between the truth and the myth. After all was it Mitsuyo Maeda that made the legend of Carlos Gracie or Carlos Gracie that made the legend of Mitsuyo Maeda?

Master Carlson Gracie Jr. is the only son of the legendary Grand Master Carlson Gracie Sr. and grandson of the founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Carlos Gracie. “Junior” as he is known to his family and friends, started jiu-jitsu at the tender age of three under the direction of his father. He now holds a 6th Degree Black Belt in BJJ, as well as a Black Belt in Judo, and is known throughout the jiu-jitsu community as one of the humblest and most genuine representations of the incredible legacy of Gracie jiu-jitsu. Although based out of his academy in Chicago, Junior also travels around the world hosting seminars that support the growth of jiu-jitsu, providing students everywhere the opportunity to learn from one of the most knowledgeable instructors in the history of the gentle art. We talk about the singular experience of growing up in the Gracie family during the rough and tumble early days of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, including incredible stories of his famous father that highlight the unique character that was Carlson Gracie Sr.. We discuss what legacy personally means to him, why jiu-jitsu continues to have such an enduring impact, and what the future holds for the martial art as it expands into new communities around the world.

Without Mitsuyo Maeda, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu would be very different from what we know today. Maeda, also known as Count Koma, started training Judo under the legendary Kano Jigoro. After gaining the respect of his peer, he started traveling the world with the sole purpose of demonstrating the efficacy of Judo. During his time in Brazil, he met and trained a fourteen year old Carlos Gracie. Maeda taught Carlos a lot about Judo and the philosophy of self defense. Anyone who trains Brazilian Jiu Jitsu owes a great debt to Mitsuyo Maeda and the fire he started in the minds and hearts of the Gracie family. In this episode we learn about the life and impact that Count Koma had on the martial art we all love.
The Japanese Mitsuyo Maeda master who allegedly taught Carlos Gracie and Luiz França those grappling principles that led to what we recognise today as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,

In episode three we start off with important issues like how to maintain the image of professionalism in podcasting and then quickly fail in our endeavor. We're then saved by our main topic of discussion: Carlos Gracie. Talking about this legend brings some class back to the show and makes it worth your time….maybe.
In this episode we sit down with Carlos Gracie, Jr. black belt Professor Flavio Almeida. Ryan and I were invited to the Gracie Barra North Phoenix academy to sit down with professor Flavio Almeida and the experience was a great one. With the recent negative events surrounding professor Flavio Almeida, his philosophy and positivity on jiujitsu and life overshadows everything else. Failing Forward! How To Succeed And Fail Your Way To Success What if you learned today that you could fail your way to success? That would be a powerful mindset shift, right? It would make all of the mistakes you’ve made up until now seem like GOOD things - because in truth, they ARE. That’s the kind of mindset that will lead you to financial freedom in the long run. What’s your mindset, you might ask? Basically, your mindset is the sum of the attitudes, stories, and beliefs you have about the world… and one of the most important mindsets towards your eventual success or failure is how you THINK about success and failure. For example - do you view failure as a bad thing? Or a good thing? You might think that’s a ridiculous question and say - “hey, of course failure is bad… I want to succeed!” Your mindset might be: “OK, I want to be successful. So that means I need to avoid doing “failure activities” and instead make sure I’m doing “success activities”. Then you keep searching for the “right system” or the “right business model” or the “right niche” that’s going to lead you to success… and you never leave research mode! I used to do the same thing - but that mindset didn’t take me anywhere. It certainly didn’t take me to my current levels of success. And trust yourself that you’ll learn A LOT more by trying and failing than you will by reading and researching and listening to podcasts. If you can combine these two types of learning (with a heavy focus on the doing/experiential knowledge) you’ll find that nothing can stop you on your journey to success. Just remember: when you fail, you learn. And when you learn, you get better. This is the secret to success! That’s why Carlos Gracie, an incredibly successful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, said: “There is no losing in jiu-jitsu. Either you win or you learn.” There are a couple of key resources beyond this video that might be useful towards shifting your mindset towards, “I’m going to fail my way to success”. Like this video? We break down and discuss the 12 commandments. We don't always agree with the commands but they have a great overall message. 1. Be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. 2. Speak to every one of happiness, health, and prosperity. 3. Give all your friends the feeling that they are valuable. 4. Look at things from a positive point of view and turn positivity into a reality of life. 5 Think only about the best, work only or the best, and always expect the best. 6. Be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are of your own. 7. Forget about past mistakes and concentrate your energy on the victories of tomorrow. 8. Always make those around you happy and keep a pleasant attitude to all those who address you. 9. Apply the largest amount of your time on self-improvement and no time in criticizing others. 10. Be too big to feel unrest, too noble to feel anger, too strong to feel fear, and too happy to tumble in adversity. 11. Hold a positive opinion of yourself and tell it to the world. Not through words of vanity, but through benevolence. 12. Believe strongly that the world is in your side, if you keep true to what is the best within you.
