A beloved Dunedin theatre is celebrating its 150th anniversary by harking back to its opening night, with Music Hall shows featuring sketches, comic songs and rousing choruses. The Playhouse Theatre first opened as Oddfellows' Hall in 1876 before being converted to a theatre in the 1960s. Next month's shows will also help fundraising efforts for theatre renovations. This week, I'm joined by bass Barnaby Rea for a longer-than-usual opera special I mean if we're doing opera, we've gotta go long, right?!), recorded backstage at the Royal Opera House, London.Barnaby is a British/Irish bass who trained at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the National Opera Studio. He was a Harewood Artist at English National Opera and a member of the Oper Frankfurt solo ensemble. He has also appeared with companies including the Royal Opera House, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Zurich Opera, Teatro Real, Opéra de Lyon, Scottish Opera and Opera North. We recorded this while Barnaby was performing Doctor Grenvil in Verdi's La traviata, in Richard Eyre's long-running Royal Opera production. This episode was also partly inspired by a recent visit to Milan and the extraordinary Teatro alla Scala, which got me thinking about opera not just as music, but as architecture, social ritual, commerce, class, spectacle and power. So this is partly a conversation about opera singing, partly a look at the machinery of a major opera house, and partly an attempt to understand why opera can feel both thrillingly immediate and socially intimidating. We talk about opera vs musical theatre, why singers train for so long, how a voice can fill a huge theatre without amplification, what “placement” and resonance mean, and why vibrato is not just decorative wobbling. We also get into opera's social context: boxes, gods, stalls, ticket prices, access, prestige, and whether opera's elitist reputation is entirely fair. There's also a wider reflection on live music now: why huge arena shows can dominate the public story of the music industry while smaller venues, grassroots promoters, festivals and independent musicians are struggling. This is a longer episode than usual, but that feels fitting for opera: there is a lot of voice, history, scale and backstage machinery to get into.In this episode00:00 – Steve introduces the opera special, Barnaby Rea, the Royal Opera House and the Milan / La Scala inspiration01:35 – Barnaby's route into opera: school swing band, musical theatre, Sweeney Todd, Guys and Dolls and early training07:30 – Guildhall, opera school, learning the craft, and why opera takes so long to train for properly12:30 – Singing in different languages and understanding what you are actually saying15:40 – Opera vs musical theatre: amplification, stamina, acting, dancing and vocal demands20:45 – Inside the Royal Opera House: backstage scale, sets, docks, ballet and multiple productions24:45 – La Scala, opera boxes, social hierarchy, standing tickets and opera as mass entertainment30:05 – Arena economics, struggling grassroots venues, festivals and why smaller gigs matter36:50 – Is opera elitist? Carnegie Hall is one of America's greatest and most enduring cultural landmarks, enchanting audiences and making history since its opening night on May 5, 1891, when Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky appeared there in his first performance in the United States. This groundbreaking performance space (originally known simply as “Music Hall”) is in fact a trio of distinct venues, all nestled within a single, opulent Italian Renaissance–style building. Although its benefactor Andrew Carnegie and his fellow Gilded Age elites had moved their grand residences farther up Fifth Avenue, New York's established cultural institutions, like the venerable Academy of Music, still lingered well to the south. Carnegie Hall helped shift that center of gravity uptown. Yet the true history of Carnegie Hall lives inside its walls—within the experiences of the audiences and the artists, and, for this week's show, within the archives themselves. Tom and Greg have been invited into the Carnegie Hall archives for an exclusive, unprecedented encounter with the story of American music. Kathleen Sabogal and Robert Hudson of the Rose Museum & Archives guide the Bowery Boys through the Hall's past, using some of their collection's most cherished artifacts: a clarinet, mysterious locks, ledger books, stickpins, suffrage buttons, beaded jackets, photographs, and autograph books that together bring the spirit of Carnegie Hall vividly to life. And in the end -- they even take to the stage! Visit the website for more information and to listen to more episodes of the Bowery Boys podcast. You can also watch this show on YouTube. A collaboration with What We Did Before on the deep history of music, from prehistoric instruments and ritual to place, technology and AI. A slightly different episode this time. Instead of the usual format, I'm sharing an interview I did for the excellent podcast What We Did Before. This particular episode, Before Music: Cave Rituals and Ancient Instruments | Steve Pretty explores where music may have come from, what it might have looked and sounded like before recorded history, and what those origins can still tell us now. We get into prehistoric conch shells and bone flutes, the role of ritual, why location and environment matter to how music develops, and how some of those ancient questions suddenly loop back round when you start thinking about AI-generated music. In other words: caves, culture, creativity, and the usual big weird human questions. I also mention a couple of live dates at the top of the episode. Ocean Songs is at East Point Pavilion in Lowestoft on Saturday 21st March, and the album launch is at Theatreship in London on Tuesday 24th March. My next live edition of Steve Pretty On the Origin of the Pieces is at Wilton's Music Hall on Tuesday 19th May, featuring Jim Bob. This week's episode of The Left Hook with host Mark Bland and guest Drew Pinson kicks off with playful banter about Drew's recent 5-day Dallas trip that caused a scheduling mix-up—complete with storm delays, tarmac woes, and Mark's mock "fatherly" scolding about better planning. The main focus shifts to sharp criticism of the ongoing **U.S.-Israel war against Iran** (dubbed "Operation Epic Fury" by the administration). Mark compares Trump's approach to the infamous "Leroy Jenkins" meme: a reckless charge without strategy, driven by gut feelings, oil interests (Strait of Hormuz), and influence from Netanyahu/Israel. They slam **Stephen Miller**'s claims of total Iranian annihilation as "hogwash," noting Iran's deep redundancies (IRGC, military branches totaling ~1M personnel), retaliatory missile strikes on multiple countries, and resilient leadership (new leader is the son of the bombed former one, fueling vengeance). Drew highlights public disapproval (only ~33% support per polls), civilian casualties (including schoolgirls from a U.S. Tomahawk strike the admin downplays or misattributes), and lack of planning or congressional approval. Mark plays a clip of Trump admitting he "doesn't know enough" about key details despite leading the war, calling it irresponsible amid wasted billions, dead service members, and ignored domestic needs. They argue the conflict disrupts global economics/shipping, ignores UN processes, and risks escalation—while Fox hypes tiny pro-U.S. celebrations in Iran that quickly flipped to "Death to America" chants. The episode closes lighter: debating the **2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees** (e.g., Mariah Carey, Phil Collins, Lauryn Hill, Billy Idol, INXS, Oasis, Wu-Tang Clan, Iron Maiden, P!nk, Shakira, Luther Vandross). Mark and Drew weigh merits—strong yes for Billy Idol/INXS, maybe for Phil Collins/Mariah, push for a broader "Music Hall" to fit non-rock acts, and no for Iron Maiden despite long snubs. A fun, fiery mix of politics and pop culture—classic Left Hook style! Tune in Saturdays at 9 AM CST on WIBH/KRLL or online.

Derringer Discoveries - A Music Adventure Podcast

Yes, January 1, 2026, marks the official start of Derringer Discoveries' 6th year as a music adventure podcast! The Three Dylans: Discovering the Talent of Peter Himmelman In the music world, the name Dylan usually points to the legendary Bob Dylan. For others, it might evoke Bob's son Jakob, the successful leader of The Wallflowers, which is essentially Jakob's alter ego. However, there is a third artist in the family circle who deserves your attention. Peter Himmelman, Bob Dylan's son-in-law, is a singer-songwriter and performer whose talent rivals the family icons. With a voice and delivery that are exceptionally easy on the ears, he is the artist you have likely been missing. THE SETTING In this episode, Team Derringer (Laura, Alton, and Paul) will introduce you to The Unknown Dylan. To help with this daunting task, the team drafted long-time listener -- and newly minted "Honorary Derringer" -- Rob Paine, from Northern Virginia. Rob drove to Charlottesville, the corporate headquarters for Derringer Discoveries, to join Laura, Alton, and Paul in person and to save the day when Peter Himmelman was unable to join Team Derringer.  While in town, Rob and Team Derringer soaked up some local music history at Miller's on the Downtown Mall -- where the world-famous band leader, Dave Matthews, previously worked as a bartender. The night continued at Coran Capshaw's The Southern Café & Music Hall, where they caught an incredible live set by UK up-and-comers, The Heavy Heavy, with Nashville-based opener Laney Jones and the Spirits. You might be interested to know that Rob is the fan who originally suggested this deep dive into Peter Himmelman's work, and his insights provide the backbone for this episode. (Do you have an idea for an episode? Let us know!) THE HIGHLIGHTS The Family Tree: Rob explains how Peter became Bob Dylan's son-in-law. (Team Derringer featured Bob Dylan in Episode 80.) The discussion further expands to Peter's brother-in-law Jakob Dylan, leader of The Wallflowers.  The Scale: Team Derringer requests for Rob to rank the Dylans -- Bob, Jakob, and Peter (Dylan in-law) on a one to 10 scale. Listen in to hear how Peter stacks up against the competition. Interstellar Recommendations: Rob also tackles a bizarre question from Paul in this episode. If a life form from another planet approached him to learn about the Dylans, what would he do? Discover Rob's reaction and the specific songs he would play for an alien audience. Once you hear his recommendations, tell Derringer Discoveries if you would choose the same ones. The Supergroup: The team dives into Bob's time with the Traveling Wilburys and their lasting musical impact. WHY PETER HIMMELMAN? Team Derringer acknowledges that Peter's last name is not Dylan, but his artistic pedigree and connection to the family make him a vital part of the story. By the end of this episode, we believe you will embrace his music with the same enthusiasm as our guest co-host, Rob Paine. Dad blasted southern rock and Allman Brothers at excessive volumes throughout childhood. Discovered dad's CD collection, dove deep into classic rock discographies. Taught himself guitar in high school after getting kicked off tennis team. Found grandmother's records in attic with broken turntable playing in mono. Mesmerized by grooves holding information, felt more futuristic than digital files. Got Project turntable in college, started seriously collecting vinyl records. College dorm had file sharing programs to download everyone's music collections. Became obsessed with seven-inch singles and exclusive B-side hunting on Discogs. Studied accounting, got CPA, worked Manhattan while spending money on records. Brooklyn DIY scene 2010-12: Death by Audio, Glasslands, 285 Kent venues thriving. Third Man Records inspired with collectible releases, impossible to get from New York. Playing in surf rock cover band The Midnight Snacks around Long Island. Started Greenway with friend Joey's pop punk band, 300 hand-screened seven-inches sold. Online forum of ten new labels supporting each other, Greenway only one remaining. Artist Dan Curran created lino cut covers for first thirty Greenway releases. Met LA Witch outside Music Hall, promised European tour records in two months. LA Witch success led to more touring bands wanting Greenway releases. Met Levitation founder Rob Fitzpatrick backstage at Desert Daze festival in California. Pandemic hit, launched Levitation Sessions producing concert films with thirty bands. Suddenly working with dream artists like Ty Segall and The Oh Sees. Levitation started as Austin Psych Fest in 2008, became major three-day festival. Flash flood disaster canceled festival one year despite bands and fans arriving. Austin's psych legacy rooted in 13th Floor Elevators and Rocky Erickson era. Levitation Sessions are filmed concerts; Live at Levitation are actual festival recordings. King Gizzard bootleg program allows labels to press their live shows freely. Learned vinyl manufacturing hands-on at New Jersey plant, experimenting with color pours. Most proud of Frankie and the Witch Fingers KEXP recording for Record Store Day. Market tightened post-pandemic, had to adjust pressing quantities and strategy accordingly. In this episode of Tales From the Green Room, the hosts welcome Chaparelle, the Texas-based pop, folk and classic-country band created by Zella Day, Jesse Woods, and Beau Bedford. The trio discuss their unique musical lane, inspired by a blend of romance, personal experiences, and a mutual affinity for original music, which has earned them a dedicated following. Special guest, Rob Bleetstein (SiriusXM Producer and Host) joins the show, having dubbed the band's music style as “Eroticana” - while Zella Day describes the essence of her theatrical, sometimes sensual flair blending with the band's authentic country-influenced performances. Recorded after the band's second remarkable set in two days at the High Sierra Music Festival - moments before they hit the road to promote their new record, Western Pleasure – Zella, Jesse, and Beau delve into their personal dynamics and the importance of collaboration. This episode encapsulates a blend of humor (touching on the difference between Texas and California hippies!), camaraderie, and heartfelt moments, offering a comprehensive insight into the lives and music of Chaparelle and a peek into their aspirations, surely leading them to a bright future. HIGHLIGHTSZella and I got together romantically, and we wanted to start a band together… and write some songs… but writing songs while you're in a relationship, just two people, can be pretty difficult. It gets very personal, very quick, and we were still in our honeymoon phase, and we were like, why are we doing this to ourselves? Let's stick with the romance. Then we met Beau… that third angle on the triangle… and everything just fit. -Jesse Woods on writing songs while in a romantic relationship with Zella Day and Beau Bedford saving the day.                                                              If you look at the packaging of the vinyl…every last lyric, everything really is within the world we've created. And we're getting better and better at being able to decipher what that world is. Somebody recently said to me, which I really liked, that was good advice, and I think it's what we're doing here, is to find a lane and take that lane completely over.. And so that's what we're doing. We're the only ones doing it like we are right now.-Zella Day on Chaparelle's mission to dominate their lane.Seeing you at clubs is one thing…but when you're on these bigger stages with bigger PAs, even though the music is totally country and it's put together, there's so much space in between everything, the way the songs are constructed, the way you guys play…there's just plenty of room for everything. But the rock element really comes through on so many of the songs… I have so many friends who saw you for the first time, and especially some younger ones who maybe are not big country lovers and they were just like freaking out.-Rob Bleetstein praising Chaparelle's performance on the big stage at High Sierra Music Festival.I think we want to just be surrounded with people that we really love and to make music that we love. I think we're talented enough for good things to happen, but the rest of the world's in control of that. We only in control of putting out songs that we love and that we believe in… and trying to hang out with people that we love.-Beau Bedford on the band's aspirations.MUSIC2025 Album – “Western Pleasure” - ChaparelleUPCOMING SHOWS (as of day of episode drop) - TICKET LINKS  Sep 20, 2025 - The Chapel -San Francisco, CATicketsSep 21, 2025 - Harlow's - Sacramento, CATicketsSep 23, 2025 - Moe's Alley Santa Cruz, CATicketsSep 24, 2025 - SLO Brew Rock - San Luis Obispo, CATicketsSep 26, 2025 - Pappy + Harriet's - Pioneertown, CATicketsSep 27, 2025 - Ohana Fest - Dana Point, CATicketsOct 11, 2025 - Gruene Hall - New Braunfels, TXTicketsOct 16, 2025 - Fine Line - Minneapolis, MNTicketsOct 17, 2025 - High Noon Saloon - Madison, WITicketsOct 18, 2025 - The Stache - Grand Rapids, MITicketsOct 20, 2025Turntable - Indianapolis, INTicketsOct 21, 2025 - Thunderbird Café & Music Hall - Pittsburgh, PAwith Esther RoseTicketsOct 22, 2025 - World Cafe Live - Philadelphia, PATicketsOct 24, 2025 - The Sinclair - Cambridge, MATicketsOct 25, 2025 - Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn, NYTicketsOct 28, 2025 - The Atlantis - Washington, DCTicketsOct 30, 2025 - The Grey Eagle - Asheville, NCTicketsOct 31, 2025 - Neighborhood Theatre - Charlotte, NCTicketsNov 1, 2025 - The Charleston Pour House - Charleston, SCTicketsNov 5, 2025 - Terminal West - Atlanta, GATicketsNov 6, 2025 – Saturn - Birmingham, AL
