In episode 26, Johnny talks to Mutant Records co-founder Mo Shafeek. Mo started Mutant Records earlier this year with fellow founding members of Mondo's poster and vinyl divisions. They really are the hot new label in town, and it's been great to see them hit the ground running with some big name releases already. Johnny's talk with Mo covers the Wachowskis, Josie & The Pussycats, and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' awesome music to Luca Guadagnino's Challengers. They talk about Mo's recent trip to Hawaii to see Michael Giacchino conducting the 20th anniversary concert for the TV show Lost, and they discuss the process of getting artwork approved by the great Tom Cruise... This conversation was recorded online in early May 2024. A huge thank you to Brad and Ryan at Mutant for helping facilitate Mo's time for the interview. Thanks also to James Van As who wrote and performed the brilliant podcast music (check out James' Loco Looper game) and to Willow Van As who designed the amazing artwork and provided general podcast support. Jon is joined once again by Matrix scholar Mo Shafeek to close out our Matrix series and discuss their reactions to The Matrix Resurrections. They throw out the rule book and pay homage to Lana Wachowski the only way they know how, by completely ignoring the format of the show to make the podcast they wanted. It's a full-throated, unabashed love letter to The Matrix Resurrections, The Wachowskis, and love in general. Find out why The Matrix is the bleu cheese of movie series by listening today!

Jon is joined by distinguished Matrix scholar Mo Shafeek to discuss the first Matrix movie that everyone (but us) hated! These two are irrevocably human; ergo, they couldn't quite touch on every topic vis-á-vis The Matrix Reloaded - but they tried their damndest. Get ready to dive deeper than a machine-controlled drill digging for Zion on this entry in our Matrix Series. Jon and Mo talk about everything from behind the scenes, highway constructing madness to how candy is the key to unlocking the secrets of this bonkers sequel. Then, in The Trials: Mo assembles his crew of Chosen Ones and makes an impractical-yet-still-amazing choice for his Matrix name and downloaded skill.

Episode 204 of Modern Vinyl has the hosts giving their 2nd Chance Spin to Saves The Day's 2003 full length, "In Reverie." An album their label quickly gave up on, upon release frontman Chris Conley said the reception opened up a "chamber inside me," a "vault of seething despair." So yeah, not a super smooth process. Mo Shafeek joins us on the program (live in Austin!) for the 6th time. He's booked the most appearances on the show (breaking a tie with Bull Moose's Chris Brown).
