Imaad WasifTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Imaad Wasif. Imaad is a musician, singer, and songwriter from the California Desert. In this episode, we chat about how his family wound up living in the desert, and what it was like growing up as 'The Weird Indian Kid' in that fairly tightknit community. We do discuss his parents and their influences on his musicality as well as his overall worldview. While his family comes from India, his parents thought it might be a good idea to make a hasty retreat from their home country due to one of his folks being Muslim, while the other is Hindu. After a stint in Canda, then London, the family moved to Palm Desert. Imaad's influences know no bounds. His father was a Ghazal singer, the family spoke Urdu at home, and Imaad grew up attending 'generator parties' in the desolate lands that are now famous for Coachella! Imaad generously lets me play my favorite song from his very first solo album from twenty years ago. The we do a deep dive into 'The Devine', the 'Super Consciousness', and what it means to have an 'awareness of self'. Naturally I ask how he came to be basically the fourth member of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs; with whom he has play for twenty years as well. Finally, we dig into Imaad's newest record. This is his SEVENTH solo album, and it is called 'Superconsciousness', and it was released in mid-March of this year. All of the songs are avail in all of the usual places, but YOU SHOULD PURCHASE the new album on Bandcamp. He is eve selling it on vinyl and includes several demo versions of some of the tracks. Speaking of which, Imaad is such a rad gut, that he lets me play my favorite track from the new record. The making of this record was severely hampered by the catastrophic wildfires in Altadena, California. Imaad lost some stuff but was very lucky overall, thank goodness. Follow Imaad Wasif on Instagram to see where he will be playing live next!***LIVE AT PERMANENT RECORDS IN LOS ANGELES JULY 3RD***

In this episode, Charles interviews filmmaker and vinyl enthusiast Steve Herold, best known for the award-winning short film Death of an Umbrella Salesman. Steve takes us back to the summer of 1984 and his first concert — the Thompson Twins on their Into the Gap tour at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey. He shares how the show almost didn't happen, thanks to a failed attempt to see Van Halen at Madison Square Garden, and how that near-miss planted the seed for a lifetime of concert-going. The real coming-of-age concert moment, Steve admits, came two years later when he finally saw David Lee Roth on his debut solo tour — a far wilder introduction to arena rock than the Thompson Twins had provided. Steve opens up about his most memorable concert experiences, including his best-ever shows: the New Jersey alternative band Dramarama at the legendary Fast Lane in Asbury Park in the early '90s. Those packed, sweat-soaked club nights — where getting to the bathroom was nearly impossible and crowd surfing was mandatory — turned Steve into a devoted fan and shaped his love of small-venue rock. He also recounts the 1996 Sex Pistols reunion at New York's Roseland Ballroom, an evening of full-on debauchery that ended with him and a friend finding a $50 bill on the floor — money that had fallen from the pockets of crowd surfers — and heading out to continue the night on someone else's dime. The image of punk-show attendees pouring out of Roseland and colliding with Broadway theatergoers on the sidewalk is one of the episode's most vivid moments. Beyond concerts, the conversation dives into Steve's YouTube channel, where he has spent years showcasing his vinyl and CD collection and visiting independent record stores during his travels for TV production work. He reflects on how the channel introduced him to a whole new community of fellow collectors — friendships that have taken him to record stores in Reno, Southern California, Long Island, and Charleston, South Carolina. Steve also discusses his filmmaking work, including the upcoming documentary about a former Hot Tuna drummer who is also a visual artist, and two music videos he directed for his friend's garage rock band Manflesh, one of which is set to screen at the Coney Island Film Festival. The episode wraps with a shared appreciation for the Wet Leg concert both Charles and Steve attended in 2025, and a laugh-out-loud detour into the chaotic legacy of G.G. Allin. BANDS: Agent Orange, David Lee Roth, Dramarama, Eagles, G.G. Allin & the Murder Junkies, Goldfinger, Hot Tuna, Jeff the Brotherhood, L7, Lady Gaga, Manflesh, Ram Jam, Sex Pistols, The Strokes, Thompson Twins, Van Halen, Wet Leg, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. VENUES: Aragon Ballroom (Chicago), Chicago Stadium, Coney Island Film Festival, Exit (Chicago), Fast Lane (Asbury Park), Garden State Arts Center (New Jersey), Lounge Ax (Chicago), Madison Square Garden (New York), Maxwell's (Hoboken), Monster Music (Charleston), Roseland Ballroom (New York), Stone Pony (Asbury Park). Hello! Emilie here. For most of my adult life, Lizzy Goodman's Meet Me In the Bathroom has been the only definitive book about the New York music scene of my youth. The trouble is that a lot of important stuff happened alongside and after that, particularly across the river in Brooklyn. So, thank God for Ronen Givony. The founder of longtime concert series Wordless Music and former Le Poisson Rouge booker braved the wilds of the publishing industry to bring us the first comprehensive history of the Brooklyn music scene: Us vs. Them: The Age of Indie Music and a Decade in New York (out now via Abrams).Us vs. Them traces the years 2004 to 2014 and a wide cast of artists and other characters, some familiar, many not. But part of the point is to look past the usual suspects to talk about the lesser-known artists and promoters who built the scene, often with their very own hands. The book traces how Bush-era political dissatisfaction, cheap rents, and digital technology gave rise to one of those uniquely fertile cultural moments in music history that only come around every so often—you know, where great gigs felt endless, scenes felt possible, and you and your friends were the ones making it happen.Ronen joins us to discuss what it was like to chronicle a scene that, unlike the Manhattan scene of the Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Interpol, was geographically far-flung and features a lot of characters who never became household names or whose careers have been lost to time. We also get into what conditions made it possible for north Brooklyn to become home to a creative ecosystem that, in Ronen's words, “existed for a reason other than profit” and its complicated relationship to commerce, the media, and selling out. And we talk about what this history teaches us about how we might go about fostering culture in New York—and cities like it—today.Ronen was also kind enough to make us a playlist featuring artists from the book. Cue it up for a great companion listen to the episode.Buy Us vs. ThemFollow Us vs. Them on Substack and Instagram This is a public episode. Episode 062: We're kicking off Season Three with a "triple-shot" treat that's bound to leave you satisfied! This week, the guys are exploring the tightest chemistry in music by diving deep into ménage à trois anthems and the hardest-working three-piece bands in the business. We're digging into the sheets of the tracklist to see who's really getting down together, featuring enough members to keep everyone happy from Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Joyce Manor, Rick James, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beck, and The Lonely Island. Between the climaxes, the guys take a heavy detour into the "Objectivist" bedroom to look into the unpublished books of Ayn Rand, proving that the Fountainhead isn't the only thing getting a rise out of us this week. Grab a partner (or two) and dig in—it's a season opener you won't want to finish alone. Apple Podcasts Instagram Spotify Playlist Official Site Listener Listens - People Museum - Instagram

Welcome to Part 2 of the second annual Seeing Them Live Year End Concert Review show, where a panel of returning guests share their favorite live music experiences from 2025. Host Charles brings together an eclectic group of music enthusiasts including Andy, Jessica, Steve, and superfan Dawn Fontaine to discuss the most memorable live music experiences of 2025.Dawn shares highlights from her incredible 55-show year, including intimate performances by New York punk bands The Lousekateers and Typhoid Rosie at JJ's Tavern in Florence, Massachusetts, and her milestone 50th Soraia show at Music Fest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The conversation takes an extraordinary turn when Dawn recounts her once-in-a-lifetime experience winning a contest in 2002 that put her on the Rolling Stones' private jet, where she met and chatted with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and the late Charlie Watts. The band even played her favorite song, "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," at the Denver show the next night. Dawn also discusses her new role booking shows for Soraia, turning her passion for the band into a dream job that allows her to be part of their team.Steve brings the star power with his account of seeing Lady Gaga at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which he ranks in his top 10 concerts of all time despite not being a superfan. He describes the show as mind-blowing, with incredible choreography, costume changes, and an intimate piano performance of "Die With a Smile" that transformed the energy of the 18,000-person venue. Steve also highlights seeing St. Vincent at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, praising her guitar skills and stage presence influenced by David Byrne, as well as catching Joan Jett with Alanis Morissette and being amazed at how Joan's voice hasn't changed over the decades. His Vegas weekend also included the Psychedelic Furs at House of Blues and Adele at Caesars Palace, making for an unforgettable concert trip.Andy rounds out the episode with his diverse concert year, starting with the mesmerizing guitar work of Mdou Moctar at The Space and a spontaneous third-row experience seeing Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys at Hard Rock Gary. His spring break trip to Vegas delivered a surprise highlight when he caught Joe Russo's Almost Dead at Brooklyn Bowl, calling it his surprise concert of the year with their incredible double guitar attack. Andy also shares his Bonnaroo experience, seeing Neil Young perform his new song "Crime in the White House" at Meigs Field (where they unknowingly appeared in the music video), and attending Riot Fest to see Jack White and the Beach Boys with John Stamos. New York has always been – bold statement coming up – my favourite music city. No question that it's connected to my life changing discovery of the Ramones way back when. I still can't walk past the Guild Hall in my hometown of Preston without a couple of nostalgic tears forming for when I first saw them play there – I tried my best not to wash off the water that Joey threw over me when things were getting a little hot. But getting back on track… all those New York musicians over the years – infinitely different stylistically, but almost always identifiable as a New York “sound”. I don't know what it is – and hindsight's a glorious thing to have – but could the Ramones, Blondie, Public Enemy, Roxanne Shante, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Swans, Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nas, have existed anywhere else and created their own distinctive sound yet is still a New York sound? Jesse Hartman's, Laptop, goes back to the late 90's – such a divisive decade. I really feel Laptop were ahead of their time and this is perhaps part of what makes New York New York – that ability to be ahead of the pack so often . They had the cinematic monologues, the rebellion, the self deprecation, the love, the heartbreak, the nostalgia and an ability to cross generations. I say that because I'm 20-odd years older and their second coming is here and I'm still hooked.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Dave Hughes joins the studio for Quick Draw, still recovering from his brutal Legends AFL injury where he broke ribs and punctured a lung. Absolute madman, he powers through the game, cracking jokes and showing off his competitive streak despite still being in recovery mode. Rolling Stone dropped their 250 Greatest Songs of the 21st Century, featuring Frank Ocean, Britney, Radiohead, Kendrick, Robyn, Taylor Swift, The White Stripes, Beyoncé, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Missy Elliott taking the top spot. In political chaos, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller froze mid-sentence during a CNN interview, leaving the anchor completely baffled. A live recording from our recent Listening Party for Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! (2009) at the Big Romance in Dublin. The third album from the New York band of Karen O, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase marked out the trio from the scrappy garage guitar of their debut (Fever To Tell) and its restrained followup (Show Your Bones) to a glorious reinvention of synthesised art-rock filled with ecstatic and anthemic heights. Featuring two of their biggest hits in Heads Will Roll and Zero, the album brought disco and dance energy to their widescreen rock music, and was full of confidence and bolder sounds with sacrificing the YYYs identity. For Andrea Cleary's last listening party for the foreseeable, she posits the theory that the album marked the end of the indie era of the 2000s where indie music was practically mainstream and Beyoncé and Jay-Z were attended Grizzly Bear shows and New York rock bands were known to all. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

Matt Berninger's excellent second solo album Get Sunk follows a slow exit from a serious depression where he couldn't get out of bed. Written on baseballs, deconstructed bedposts and anything else he could write lyrics on, the National singer writes songs like he's painting a picture. Once a graphic designer during the dot-com bubble in New York, he was going to formative gigs by The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio and The Walkmen. We hear about the profound influence Guided by Voices and Pavement had on his style, and how he has good ideas 51% of the time. Get Sunk is out now. Filmed at The Social, London. Andy has fun with the soundboard, sings a Yeah Yeah Yeahs song, feels bad for Braxton Keith, and theorizes that the reason Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got engaged the week before PATE's 400th episode is because they're fans of the show. On Rachel's Chart Chat, Rachel from Des Moines reads and attempts to live fact-check the Progressive Rock chapter of "I Wanna Be Sedated" by Dellio & Woods. Follow Rachel on Last.fm here.
Andy talks about attending a wedding and a Black Keys concert, then he discovers a Yeah Yeah Yeahs sample on a Miami bass dance song from 2003. "You Want It! You Got It" heißt folgerichtig das erste Album, mit dem Lawn Chair einen Großteil des Jahres 2024 verbracht haben. Schon bei ihrer zweiten EP ("Eat the Beans and Wear the Jeans!", 2023) hat die Band mit Olaf Opal (The Notwist, International Music, Beatsteaks) zusammengearbeitet sowie mit Chris Coady (u.a. Beach House, TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), der die Tracks final gemixt hat. Beide waren nun auch an "You Want It! You Got It" beteiligt.
