There has been a lot of talk around Sinners. Good, bad, or ugly, everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Is it really the best movie of the young year? Is it grossly overrated? Something else entirely? Whatever the case, audiences are going out to see it in drovers. What is being overlooked by many is the biggest irony surrounding it.We spend a lot of time talking lovingly of the theater experience. It was a big part of growing up and still remains fun even as adults. So it sucks to hear when the CEO of Netflix says theaters are outdated. It is not so much his opinion that matters, but the fact that he actually has the power to make movie theaters obsolete.Which makes it all the better when someone like Rian Johnson talks about how he wants Knives Out 3 in as many movie theaters as possible for as long as it can. Since he has a deal with Netflix, we all know where the movie will eventually end up. The fact that he wants a run that is longer than a week or two is nice to hear. The detective noir is a genre that does not get the love it used to. A part of this may be due to burnout. The 1930s - 1950s saw a huge number of them released. Many of them are considered classics. There has not been a good one in quite a while so when one bills itself as a triumphant return, we were all in.Exaggeration is a part of marketing. We get that. But Dark My Light has no film noir elements, at all. There are exactly zero moments. Instead, it is a science fiction movie that wants to be about a character. The question is not why did they market as something it is not. It is not even whether what they ended up doing worked. The real question is did this movie even have a script?Karate tournament movies were all the rage back in the day. Jean-Claude Van Damme was able to build a career off of them while the legacy of The Karate Kid still lives on. We could not wait to see Absolute Dominion. Sure, the idea may be the flimsiest excuse ever to have a globe spanning battle for supremacy, but nostalgia is a powerful draw.Regrettably, Absolute Dominion lacks any of the charm of the movies from our childhood. It is way more confusing than it has to be, ignores its most interesting subplot, and lacks any of the tension these types of films need. We also try to figure out who Alex Winter owes money to. Aaaaaaand we're back. Episode 1 of season 14 of the Dana Gould Hour Podcast. Has anything of interest happened since the last episode? Don't think so. Certainly not here in Los Angeles, or America. Okay. Great. Let's get at it!  Drew Friedman is here. Drew Friedman is one of the premiere illustrators and cartoonists in America. You know his work from The New York Observer, the New Yorker, his books, Warts And All, Old Jewish Comedians, More Old Jewish Comedians, Still More Old Jewish Comedians, Too Soon, Drew Friedman's Sideshow Freaks, Heroes Of The Comics, More Heroes Of The Comics, the list goes on and on. In 1987 I discovered his book Any Similarity to Persons Living Or Dead is Purely Coincidental and it quite literally redefined my sense of humor. It is hard to articulate the impact the book had on me. No kidding. Drew has a new book out called Schtick Figures, portraits of people important to Drew. And me. People he refers to as The Cool, The Comical and The Crazy. Portraits of people like Gilbert Gottfried, #2 and #3 as only Drew can draw them. Drew is also the subject of a new documentary that's about to be released entitled The Vermeer Of The Borscht Belt, Drew Friedman is here.  Kurt Sayenga is a writer, director and producer. We first met when Kurt ran the series Eli Roth's History Of Horror. Kurt now has a series on Shudder called Horror's Greatest. Season #2 just dropped, with guests like Davi Dastmalchian, Joe Hill, Jonah Ray, Alex Winter, Mick Garris, yours truly and many, many more. Kurt's here to talk about the show and the topics covered this season as it continues to explore our fascination with all things cinematically horrific.  Cinematically horrific. If you want to examine the realistically horrific, True Tales From Weirdsville takes a deep dive into the 1957 classic A Face In Crowd, starring Andy Griffith, written by Budd Schulberg and directed by Elia Kazan. It tells the cautionary tale of what happens when a corrupt, amoral grifter gains a position of power and influence in America. It was made in 1957 and it was a FREAKISHLY predictive film.  https://www.DanaGould.com

Spielberg has been working towards making a musical for his entire career, so it shouldn't be a surprise that when he finally got to make an all-out musical he brought not only his A-game, but also his deep love and understanding of Old Hollywood musicals with him. This resulted in 2021's West Side Story, an incredibly smart and charming reinterpretation of the Robert Wise film and the Stephen Sondheim original stage play starring Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, Ariana DeBose, and the original's Rita Moreno. Joining us for this discussion is none other than Bill S. Preston Esq. himself, Mr. Alex Winter. Most people will know Alex Winter from his acting career given his legacy starring in cult classic movies, but Alex is also decorated and highly respected documentary maker. His work includes The Panama Papers, Zappa, Downloaded, and the two in particular that we shall be talking about in this episode, Deep Web and The Youtube Effect. At the time of recording of this conversation with Alex a large part of the dialogue was centred around his documentary Deep Web and the story of The Silk Road, an online marketplace which pioneered in bitcoin and the deep web, patrons were able to purchase nearly anything they desired. The creator of Silk Road, Ross Ulbricht, was given a disproportionately long prison sentence consisting of double life plus 40 years. At time of releasing this podcast episode, and over a decade of time served, Ross has been released from prison with a presidential pardon. Alex Winter is able to give a unique insight into the Ross' case and the Silk Road journey, as well as the Ulbricht family to whom Alex got to know well over the years. Ross' mother, Lynn, has been a previous guest on the Stop and Search podcast. In this episode we will discuss Ross Ulbricht and his headline-making case, but we also speak about a great deal more, such as the delivery of information in this new era of global communications, what this means for the human race, challenges we face with online platforms, and yes, the 'drug war' and the many consequences of punitive policies. From the SAG-AFTRA picket lines to the New York Times lawsuit against OpenAI, the battle over AI's role in creative industries is heating up. In this second episode of The Dynamist's series on AI and copyright, we dive into the messy reality of how artists, creators, and tech companies are navigating this rapidly evolving landscape. Our guests bring unique perspectives to this complex debate: Mike Masnick, CEO of Techdirt, who's been chronicling the intersection of tech and copyright for decades; Alex Winter, the filmmaker and actor known for Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, who offers boots-on-the-ground insight from his involvement in recent Hollywood labor negotiations; and Tim Hwang, Senior Fellow at FAI, who explores how current legal battles could shape AI's future. The conversation covers everything from "shakedown" licensing deals between AI companies and media outlets to existential questions about artistic value in an AI age. While the guests acknowledge valid concerns about worker protection and fair compensation, they challenge the notion that restricting AI development through copyright law is either practical or beneficial. Drawing parallels to past technological disruptions like Napster, they explore how industries might adapt rather than resist change while still protecting creators' interests.

Bill & Ted creators Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson, along with stars Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves, always assumed Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey would be the last time anyone would see Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted Theodore Logan together on the big screen ever again.Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey hadn't done the business of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and so all four men went their own ways in Hollywood, each carving their own successful careers. It wasn't until a random red carpet comment in 2005 that any of them thought seriously about reviving the characters, and not until 2008 that they got together at a BBQ to discuss ideas. And they ended up having a great idea, one they all wanted to do, but it meant writing a spec script, without having any of the rights in place to get this legacy sequel actually made. And then they found out MGM was planning their own reboot called Bill & Ted's Friggin' Badass Voyage...I would love to hear your thoughts on Bill & Ted Face the Music !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! That's when Johnny asked him, "When you're on the road, there are groupies, and rock stars have groupies, I'm sure you do. You know, women who want more than just your autograph . . . how do you handle that?" The original ice cream sandwich sold for a penny in 1900 from a pushcart in the Bowery neighborhood of New York. Newspapers never identified the name of the vendor in articles that appeared across the country. However, the ice cream sandwiched between milk biscuits became a hit. Soon, pushcarts popped up around the city and country during the summer months selling the portable treats. Early pictures show beachgoers at Atlantic City getting their ice cream sandwiches for 1¢ each.

Today, we welcome Josh Forbes to the podcast, director of Destroy All Neighbors. This is a gleefully fun movie that feels as inventive as it is unhinged. It's the kind of movie that I'm feeling really good about seeing more of because it's completely original. This is Josh's second feature after his debut Contracted Phase 2 and I think he's really made a serious statement; the energy, attitude, fun and bonkers practical effects make this a very fun movie. The movie starred Jonah Ray with a very hilarious performance by Alex Winter and special effects by Bill Corso and Gabe Bartalos of Basket Case Fame. In this interview Josh gets into the making of Destroy All Neighbors from the conception of the idea, to his attachment as director, raising funds and more as well as the current state of cinema that enabled something this original to get made. Don't forget to check out Destroy all Neighbors, now streaming on Shudder, and in the meantime, please enjoy this conversation with Director, Josh Forbes. Take inventory of awesome things you have access to.This is a common one, take inventory of everything you have access to and fashion your movie out of that. Production value is so critical, and often so expensive. Maximize your movie by taking an inventory of what you have access to and writing your script around it. If you have a friend with a boat, that boat should be in your movie. A friend who owns a pig, in the case of Josh, a pig should be in the movie. This is exactly what Robert Rodriguez did with El Mariachi and Kevin Smith with Clerks.Use practical effects.Practical effects, never went away, but still somehow feel like they're having a second heyday which is awesome. The thing about practical effects is that the community is very very passionate and despite having a low budget, Josh was able to get some very heavy hitters like Bill Corso and Gabe Bartolos on board simply because the project looked fun. Similarly when he did Mortuary Collection, Ryan Spindell was able to get Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis from ADI on board despite a relatively low budget because these guys wanted to be involved for the fun of it. The level of passion present in the practical effects community is something very awesome to tap into and it adds a level of production value to your movie that goes a long way in the horror community. Always pay as much as you can though.Push for your original singular vision.Destroy all Neighbors could not have been made by anybody else because it's so specific and singular to Josh, his sensibility, and the things he likes. Directors are supposed to direct movies that only they would be able to do. As a director, you need to understand own and articulate your own sensibility - yes, be open to feedback and collaboration, but your movies should feel specifically uniquely yours. These are the types of projects that inspire others and are worth getting excited about.SHOW NOTESMovies and TV ShowsOnyx the FortuitousFried BarryIdle HandsWhat We Do in the Shadows (both movie and TV show)Sin City (referenced for character design)Buffalo 66" (referenced for trailer music)MusicKing Crimson ("In the Court of the Crimson King")Gentle Giant ("Octopus" album)Straubs (band)Yes (band)Follow Josh Forbes at:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bestjoshforbes/IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1141362/?ref_=tt_ov_drThanks as always...

Learning about new and improved ways to navigate archaic structures in our line of business is always very interesting. So, this week, I wanted to take you on a deep dive into blockchain entertainment financing --- refined by entrepreneurs and producers Kim Jackson and Jake Craven of Breaker.io.Kim is a member of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, co-owner of SingularDTV, and CEO of its umbrella company, Breaker Studios, where Jake serves as Vice President of Content Partnerships.Breaker, founded in 2017, is a leading blockchain development and services company in the Media & Entertainment industry. It provides an innovative, intuitive, and user-friendly end-to-end royalty management platform for independent creators and distributors. Simply put, it uses blockchain and cloud-based technology to enable creators to maximize their revenue by automating revenue collection, backend accounting, and royalty payments while ensuring transparent reporting. I discovered Breaker when I stumbled upon Alex Winter's award-winning feature documentary, Trust Machine: The Story Of Blockchain produced by Kim. Trust Machine trailer. The film explains how Blockchain technology is already being used to change the world, fighting income inequality, the refugee crisis, and world hunger. If you are new to Blockchain or have felt overwhelmed by all the information Google threw at you in an attempt to learn the rudimentary theory of Blockchain and cryptocurrency, check out Vinay Gupta's 'A Brief History of Blockchain, Kim referenced during our chat.Breaker's concept is definitely the future of entertainment finance and, dare I say, global financial transacting.Being ahead of its time, Breaker is introducing products that allow for media revenue and royalty to be tracked via blockchain technology, which allows for an open-source network of data.Basically, Breaker provides a better model for instantaneous recording and eliminating mistrust, especially for independent companies that want to sustain a business and revenue model for themselves. I wish we had more time to continue the conversation because it was packed with filmtrepreneurial and blockchain knowledge bombs, and we could all do with the extra crash course. But I made sure to ask many important questions for you guys from today's experts. So, enjoy my conversation with Kim Jackson and Jake Craven.
