Welcome to another episode of the Following Films Podcast. Today, we are exploring a project that is equal parts hilarious, bizarre, and incredibly poignant: the animated feature film MARS. This film marks the final project from the legendary cult comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U'Know, serving as a bittersweet and brilliant capstone to the legacy of the late, beloved Trevor Moore. Joining me to discuss the Herculean effort required to bring this vision to the big screen is the film's director and producer, Sevan Najarian. He has been a vital force in the alternative media landscape for years, and in this episode, we trace his fascinating career path, from his early days getting into the director's chair for animation to his involvement with the irreverent and influential world of Channel Zero.We also dive deep into the "scrappy" and often painstaking labor of love that was the production of MARS. Conceptualized over a decade ago, the film follows Kyle, a man who enters a contest to go to the Red Planet mostly to escape his impending wedding, only to find himself stranded with a crew of lunatics on a ship that is anything but luxury. With an 8-city screening tour kicking off February 20th at participating Alamo Drafthouse locations and a wider theatrical release on March 13th, there has never been a better time to celebrate the return of the WKUK. So, let's get into my conversation with Sevan Najarian about the decade-long journey to the Red Planet, the evolution of his career, and why this story is more relevant today than ever before.
On today's show, we continue our loose-connections series of films by discussing the little-discussed 1991 Wes Craven film, THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS! Join us as we discuss the interesting acting choices of the cast, the way the film explores Classism, the sinister revelation of who the people under the stairs are (and the even more disturbing reason why they're there), the See/Hear/Speak No Evil monkeys, and so much more! We also talk about The Muppets Show (2026 Disney+ Special), Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), our feelings about legal dramas in general, and the various Alamo Drafthouse closings in Texas! ———————————————————— To see images of the stuff discussed, look at your device's screen while listening! This week on Metal Geeks, we kick things off with some heavy headlines—paying tribute to Catherine O'Hara and James Van Der Beek, talking a quick plunge into the madness of 70,000 Tons of Metal, reacting to Josh D'Amaro stepping in as Disney's new CEO, and pouring one out for the last Houston-area Alamo Drafthouse closures. From there, we dive into what we've been watching—from Roofman and Caught Stealing to The Muppet Show and The 'Burbs. George loads up GT with The Rip, Fackham Hall, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and The Pitt, while we break down the Mandalorian and Grogu “Superb Owl” spot, Marvel's Wonder Man, and the game Romeo Is A Dead Man. And of course, George Hates Metal returns with Marianas Rest's Burden bringing the emotional devastation. Heavy riffs, geek debates, and absolute chaos—just the way we like it.
The genesis of our show can be found in the Alamo Drafthouse. We may not go to it as often as we used to, but we did not want to see it close its doors in El Paso. We have not had too many good things to say about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise recently. Maybe the latest update will have us singing a different tune. Plus, a lot of Mike Flannagan news.Unsurprisingly, we love Halloween. The costumes, the movies, the parties, we enjoy it all. Still, a Halloween movie at the beginning of the year is a little weird. But what if that movie dresses up as a Halloween movie but has nothing to do with it?Even putting aside the fact that it is a Halloween movie that has no costumes, no decorations, and no pumpkins, The Haunted Forest is a strange film. The protagonist is surrounded by death, but is more concerned about whether he should go to work. A woman on her way to college grooms a high school kid. Two haunts with similar names become involved in a blood feud. It also includes the hardest cut possible ever seen in movie history.Movies based on video games are nothing new. One of the biggest stories of this young year is how a small indie horror based on a little game has been a box office success. It is hard to believe that within a matter of weeks, two indie horrors based on indie games have dropped, however. The Mortuary Assistant has the expected thrills, chills, and spills. It does a nice job of changing up the formula by having the vessel for possession have much more agency. There are also some spooky visuals in it. If only the damn story did not get in the way. Is the Alamo Drafthouse a thing of the past? At the fancy theater where you can drink booze and eat a full meal, they’re now asking customers to order food on their phone rather than through a human. It’s New Music Friday with “The Voice” producer Jake Primavera! First up, it’s new music from Charlie Puth. The Muppets are back and the show hasn’t changed for 50 years — here’s why that’s a good thing! We listen to Morrissey’s fabulous new song “Notre Dame.” We’ve got Solo to Solo, Bass Edition! After Renee Macklin Good was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minnesota last week, protests erupted across the nation, including right here in Austin. Local protesters have flooded not only the Texas Capitol and Austin City Hall but also out in the suburbs, in Cedar Park, Round Rock, and Pflugerville. On this week's Friday News Roundup, host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by executive producer Eva Ruth Moravec and Leslie Rangel, deputy managing editor at The Barbed Wire, to break down the ongoing demonstrations and what they signal about the growing resistance to federal immigration enforcement. Later, they dig into the sad passing of the Hole in the Wall founder, new ordering rules at Alamo Drafthouse, and why a group of incarcerated women were determined to raise money for a stray cat. Alamo Drafthouse is ditching its iconic pen-and-paper ordering system for mobile ordering. The gang debates whether this change is progress or sacrilege, and KT hilariously points out the irony:“So I can pull out my phone to pay you, but not to check a score? Make it make sense!”

In this week's episode, Joe and Lauri sit down to unpack the Dragula Titans Season 2 reunion—well… eventually. The reunion itself gets about ten minutes of focused airtime; the rest is pure Joe-and-Lauri chaos: bathroom disasters, awkward restaurant cats, questionable comedians, First Amendment weirdos, and one very dramatic microphone collapse. If you come for the Dragula analysis, stay for the unhinged tangent festival that only these two can deliver. Joe and Lauri agree that this reunion is better than most Dragula reunions… but still mostly a retread of old drama. The Dollya vs. the Cast confrontation sparks most of the meaningful discussion—though the Boulets' editing muddies the waters and leaves major context unexplained. The show revisits the Loris bathtub incident, but the evidence shown doesn't match the accusations levied against Dollya. Lauri notes the frustration of Dollya apologizing while the show cuts away to a separate conversation, leaving viewers without clarity. Eva's “I'll support you but from very far away” energy prompts a bigger conversation about loyalty and self-preservation among the cast. Cynthia vs. Blackberry gets rehashed, with Lauri pointing out Cynthia's selective outrage and how the logic of gameplay gets conveniently ignored. Joe observes that drag, an inherently solitary art form, doesn't always translate well to group competition—and the reunion makes that painfully clear. Consensus: great drag queens, complicated people, and a reunion that proves almost no one has changed their position since filming. A good hour of the episode is not about Dragula at all—and it's glorious. Lauri recounts accidentally blocking a mobility-impaired woman from the accessible stall, panicking, fleeing, and hiding in another restroom for ten minutes so she wouldn't have to face her. Joe immediately relates with his own “handicap seat anxiety” from the Alamo Drafthouse era. Joe updates Lauri on the search for a Christmas party venue that won't unleash a stray cat upon her.Spoiler: every promising venue apparently comes with two cats. Lauri suggests she'd rather dine among “roaming homeless men” than roaming cats. The two dig into a viral clip of a woman confronting a man over racist online comments. Lauri, horrified and impressed, wonders what possesses people to act with such intense malice online. Joe walks Lauri through the bizarre world of people who film grocery store entrances to provoke strangers into reacting on camera. A long reminiscence on: Comedians who police other comedians' material Possums falling from trees Robin Williams' unconscious joke absorption Why Lauri hates hanging out after shows A petty-cash scandal that once destroyed one of Joe's friendships Joe's microphone literally detaches mid-episode. Lauri vamped so hard she nearly passed out trying to fill dead air. The video may one day see the light of day. (No runway this week — no Ghost Host segment for reunion episodes.) Ultimately, the reunion offered: Some clarifications Some contradictions And a whole lot of cast members who still don't like each other But the real heart of the episode is Joe and Lauri spiraling into stories, ethics debates, comedy war stories, possum trauma, and moral hypotheticals about whether Lauri would turn Joe in for a crime (answer: immediately). Dropped December 5, 2025 on his YouTube channel, the 1:44 clip ramps up the dread for the sci-fi horror film: a convict (Mark Fischbach) pilots the rusty "Iron Lung" sub through a blood ocean on a barren moon, post-"Quiet Rapture" apocalypse where stars and planets vanished—leaving survivors in cosmic isolation.Self-financed, written, directed, produced, edited, and starring Markiplier, it adapts David Szymanski's 2022 indie game (with his script input and cameo). Co-stars Caroline Rose Kaplan, Jacksepticeye (Seán McLoughlin), Elsie Lovelock, and Elle LaMont; score by Andrew Hulshult. Boasting 50,000+ gallons of fake blood to shatter Evil Dead 2013's record—Markiplier was hospitalized from eye exposure during shoots.Self-distributed to 50-100 U.S. indie theaters starting January 30, 2026 (L.A. premiere at Alamo Drafthouse), tickets fly at ironlung.com—some screenings sold out. “Please Do Not Touch the Fence. You'll Get Zapped. And the Goats Will Laugh at You.”That is the advice the banner gives. Standing behind that banner, and a little to the right, are a group of goats who are clearly encouraging you to touch the fence. You can see it in their eyes and in the smirk at the corners of their little goat mouths. All of that was in the photo that arrived with a text from my friend, Dan, along with this note.“We have a new side-venture that uses goats as a land clearing crew for hire, and recently have set up a mobile cam to keep an eye on them while on the job.”Although I do make up things for a living, I promise I am not making this up.Twenty-three minutes later, I received another text from another friend.“I have a problem. Do you know in ‘Peter Pan' where Peter loses his shadow. I've seem to have lost my shadow. I used to be a very creative person. Somewhere over the last 5 years due to life's circumstances I seem to have misplaced my creativity. I feel almost certain that I began giving out far more than I was taking in. I lost my wonder and my awe for the world. I'm not learning and growing, and it has caught up with me. If you have any insight or direction, it would be truly helpful. Thanks friend.”I responded, “Is this for real?”My friend said, “Yes, for real.”I said, “You need to have a place to escape. A good fiction book can take you into an alternate reality where you don't have any obligations, or people who need something from you. Buy a copy of ‘Cryptonomicon' by Neal Stephenson. You'll meet a guy named Shaftoe. I've known him for more than 20 years.”My friend said, “Thank you. I'll tell him you said hello.”Both of those texts arrived, “Ping… Ping,” shortly after I posted the second restaurant review I have ever written.Heads Up, friends!Real pizza ovens. Real flames. Real char on the bottom of the crazy-good crust. You'll never be the same. This pizza is SO GOOD that it's illegal in 7 states and under investigation in 12 more. So good you'll walk outside and look up at the stars and howl at the moon like a werewolf.I have reviewed very few things during my 67 years because, frankly, there just aren't that many things out there that are really remarkable. DeSano Pizzeria Napoletana is remarkable. Not the atmosphere. It's plain, plain, plain. Nothing special. But the food is MAGNIFICO! (On Slaughter just west of Mopac, in front of Alamo Drafthouse.) And the people who work there are definitely part of the magic. They are excited about what they are doing, and their excitement is contagious. We ordered a spinach salad. Best spinach salad I've ever had! I mean that. And big enough for two people. I looked at my wife (We're having our 50th anniversary next year) and I said, “These people are buying ONLY the very best ingredients. They's spending their money on the food, not the decor.” (We were both smiling so hard for so long that my face aches.)Order the Verdura pizza. Be aware that it does NOT have marinara sauce. You'll be throwing rocks at marinara sauce after you've eaten the Verdura. It's really simple: perfect crust, extraordinary cheese, fresh spinach, roasted tomatoes, roasted garlic. HEAVEN.Or you can go old school and get a pizza...

Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's October, so that means it's time for our “Shocktober” series, where we cover movies that go bump in the night! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Tony Sedani discuss Tom Savini's overlooked 1990 remake of the George Romero classic, Night of the Living Dead!A quick pace! Mild undead nudity! Shocking neck violence! A door you can punch through! A female lead who transitions from damsel in distress to legitimate action hero! Fantastic makeup effects and memorable zombie designs, including one that's twisted up like a pretzel! A great "one awful night in a single location" movie! No real explanation for the horrors that ensue! Social commentary on division and class war! Good ol' boys toying with zombies! Feelings of hopelessness! An impossible Candyman reference! A cast that includes the legendary Tony Todd, Laura Dern's stunt double from Jurassic Park, Patricia Tallman, the writer of The Gingerdead Man, William Butler, an unrecognizable Bill Moseley, and Tom Towles as the worst dude ever! While it may live in the shadow of the 1968 original, it's one of the better remakes and some people's preferred version of Night of the Living Dead! In addition, Alex talks about his favorite movies from Fantastic Fest 2025, including the Iko Uwais-produced martial arts extravaganza Ikatan Darah, Johannes Roberts' monkey-gone-mad creature feature Primate, Justin Long's unique take on corrupt cops in Los Angeles, Night Patrol, Steve Kostanki's Deathstalker, V/H/S/Halloween, the shark thriller Beast of War, and Curry Barker's oddly funny cautionary horror tale, Obsession! Finally, Tony shares his spoiler-free thoughts on The Long Walk, One Battle After Another, Good Boy, and The Smashing Machine, while Alex does the same for the Shudder original Night of the Reaper, and the realization of a plumber's worst nightmare, Scared Shitless! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The Death Don't Do Fiction podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Joseph Blumenthal, Jack Beresin and Milton Holloway, all kind of came together to make movie concessions happen. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients so here's one of those. [Maven Roofing Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast, Dave Young here alongside Stephen Semple. And Stephen just told me what we're going to talk about today, and it's not really, I mean, it's an empire sort of. It's an empire in terms of its category, right? Stephen Semple: Yes, yes. Dave Young: But it's not so much like you can't put your finger on a brand name for it. So we're talking about movie concessions and how things got started. So I'm guessing in the early days, you didn't buy a big old thing of popcorn. You just sat down and watched a movie. Stephen Semple: No, that was what I found, so I found interesting about this, and I thought, and when I went down it, I was actually researching one particular business. And then what I suddenly realized is that, no, there's a couple of things that converge together that really made the modern movie concession. And there's three players that went into this, and all three of them ended up building fortunes in the process. That's Joseph Blumenthal, Jack Beresin and Milton Holloway, all kind of came together to make movie concessions happen. As we know today, movie concessions are like a multi-billion dollar business, and concession sales are like close to half of movie theater profits so they're a big deal. Dave Young: Where I am in Austin, we're, I don't know, half a mile from an Alamo Drafthouse, and I don't go to the theater as often as I did before all the things. But Alamo Drafthouse is known for pioneering like you have a menu and you sit down, you order a meal while you're, and they'll bring it to you in the theater. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: We've always known that you're going to spend more on popcorn and drinks, than you did it on the movie ticket. Stephen Semple: And they've taken it to a whole other level, but wasn't always that way, Dave. In June 19th, 1905- Dave Young: 1905? Stephen Semple: ... was the first movie, like the first movie showing kind of in a theater sort of setup, and they were called nickelodeons. That's what they called the early movie houses because it was nickel and all that other stuff. And it was super successful, and pop-ups started happening all over the place. And as we know, the early movies were silent. So what would happen is people would buy a ticket to go to the movie, like vendors would buy a ticket to go to the movie, and they would walk up and down the aisle going, "Popcorn, popcorn. Who wants..." and selling stuff just like they did at the ballgames and there was- Dave Young: Or the circus, yeah. Stephen Semple: But there was no connection to the theater. These were like, literally, Dave Young would buy a ticket, show up, and then basically walk up and down the aisle selling whatever food he had to sell. Dave Young: And they just let him. Stephen Semple: So concessions were not a thing at all. At all. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: So Jack Beresin is working at an opera house, and he's looking at a way to make some extra money, and he saw people buying and eating food at a nickelodeon. So he approaches his manager with the idea of, at this opera house now, you can't go up and down the aisles in the opera house. The whole idea, let's set up a table and do concessions during the intermission....

On this week's episode, I'm joined by Tim League, one of the founders of the Alamo Drafthouse and the man behind Metro Private Cinemas in New York's Chelsea neighborhood. It's a pretty cool concept—half fine dining, half private cinema auditorium—and I was excited to discuss the evolution of movie theaters as both viewing and gastronomic experiences. League is planning to open the theater in a few weeks, and they're accepting reservations now; you can check out the offerings here. If you go, let me know: I'll be very jealous, as it will likely be a while before I am able to make it up to New York again. But when I do, it's the first stop on my tour of the city.

Writer and director Alex Ross Perry, who himself worked at Kim's Video, discusses the film alongside editor Clyde Folley. "Videoheaven" will screen on August 12 at Alamo Drafthouse, with a Q&A with Perry to follow.
