Emboldened by brilliant performances from its two leads Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly, the film is both an assured and nimble stylistic calling card for the future Matrix directors and a carefully studied lesbian romance, rendered in considered motif and visual flourish. We begin with an examination of the Wachowskis as filmmakers and how their work exists at a singular nexus of mass appeal and subversiveness. Then, we discuss the influence of feminist author and journalist Susie Bright, a key influence and collaborator on the film, and how she informed the Wachowskis' formal approach to formally conveying the slow burn of lesbian eroticism. Finally, we discuss the film's erotic sequences, how they transcend simple arousal, and what they tell us about the revolutionary capacity of sex and pleasure as a weapon against capitalism's confining homogeneity.Buy and read Xuanlin's book Revolutionary Desires: The Political Power of the Sex Scene at 404Ink.Read Xuanlin's Manifesto for the Modern Cinematic Sex Scene at AnOther.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2015 Netflix series Sense8 for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Sense8 is an incredibly queer show that we honestly cannot believe first premiered a whole entire decade ago. It truly ranks up there next to Orphan Black for us as one of the most impressive shows ever to exist on television. Although we really wish it had gotten more seasons, what we did get was an absolute masterpiece. Sense8 was nominated for GLAAD media awards in 2016, 2018 and 2019 for its queer representation and if you did not get a chance to watch it back then, we really cannot recommend enough that you watch it right now. Like for real, why are you reading this? Go watch Sense8 first and then listen to the episode, because this is full of spoilers from here on. As you might recall from our episodes on The Matrix and Bound, we are big fans of the Wachowski sisters' work. Sense8 is no exception. In fact, Lana Wachowski has said that much of Nomi's storyline was autobiographical in nature. In terms of lesbian couples in media, it doesn't get much more top tier than Nomi and Amanita. Honestly, they might still be at the top even now. We love that Amanita is so ride or die for Nomi; and in context of it being 2015 at the time, the scenes where she defends Nomi against her terfy friends hit even harder. But, as much as we are all in on Nomi and Amanita, they are not the only queer rep in this show. In fact, we'd argue that every single person in the cluster is queer simply by nature of being a sense8. By having this diverse group of people all across the globe suddenly psychically linked, the Wachowskis make a statement about the nature of sexuality, the value of shared experiences in relation to developing empathy, and what it means to be a “we” in all senses of the word. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Sense8, titled “Sum of Our Parts”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida. Yes.• Is it still better than most action movies? Also yes.• The epic Zion defense sequence: Maybe too long but undeniably tense and visually striking.• Neo's final battle with Agent Smith: A rain-soaked, philosophical showdown that cements Neo's legacy.• Trinity's emotional farewell: A standout moment of love and sacrifice that hits all the right notes.• Final thoughts: Despite its flaws, Revolutions is a satisfying end to the trilogy and better than its reputation suggests.Engagement:What are your thoughts on The Matrix Revolutions? After THE MATRIX and V FOR VENDETTA, the Wachowskis were ready to turn from darkness, into the bright, bright candy-colored light. The result was SPEED RACER, an eyepopping postmodern explosion that honored the gravity-defying spirit of old-school anime… and which audiences couldn't quite figure out.Host Rico Gagliano talks with the SPEED RACER star Roger Allam (THE THICK OF IT), legendary special effects artist John Gaeta (THE MATRIX), and more about how the movie was made, why it tanked, and why a growing army of acolytes start their days by watching its final action sequence. “We go into the Art Institute [of Chicago] and every room there, there are paintings that look completely and utterly different from the other rooms. But in cinema, everything looks the same. And it's a really aggressive straight-jacket, aesthetically. We started talking about cubism, for instance, and we started talking about could you make a cubist film? And we realized that if you try to make a cubist film for adults, you will end up like Picasso, running from the angry mob when he first showed Guernica. They wanted to kill him. Literally. It's because adults... they reject change, and an aesthetic change is too aggressive a death for them. Every generation experiences aesthetic death, and when you really assault an aesthetic, people freak out. But we said that kids are okay with aesthetic change.” - Lana Wachowski on making Speed Racer. Speed Racer, based on a popular Japanese Manga and cartoon from the 1960s, is a CGI explosion of high speed hijinks. Directed by Lilly and Lana Wachowski, it embodies much of what made the series so beloved. That works to its benefit and detriment. For those unfamiliar with Speed Racer's inspiration, there is a barrier to entry. Essentially, this is an eccentric film based on an eccentric property. And the sheer amount of colors and whizzing computer effects don't make Speed Racer any easier to digest. It is a live action cartoon, where almost everything thrown at you looks flat. It comes as no surprise then that this failed to recoup its $120 million budget, earning just $93.9 million. Critics also largely dismissed it. Speed Racer sits at 42% on Rotten Tomatoes with 218 reviews. All that aside, though, this is a movie fans of the property seem to love, and, undeniably, there is a certain charm to the movie. Unsurprisingly, the backlash on the internet was almost immediate. Warner Bros. has officially announced the development of a fifth movie in the iconic Matrix franchise, set to be written and directed by Drew Goddard, the acclaimed talent behind The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods. This new chapter marks a significant departure from tradition, as it will be the first Matrix film not directed by Lana or Lilly Wachowski. However, Lana Wachowski will play a vital role in the project as an executive producer, bridging the past with the future of the Matrix universe. While specific details about the plot and whether key cast members such as Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return remain under wraps, the announcement has already sparked considerable excitement among fans and industry insiders alike. Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production, Jesse Ehrman, expressed enthusiasm for Goddard's vision, highlighting the writer-director's profound admiration for the original series and his fresh perspective on its beloved world and characters. Drew Goddard's career is distinguished by his innovative storytelling and versatile writing across television and film, including notable works like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost, and Daredevil, as well as his Oscar-nominated screenplay for The Martian. Goddard's dedication to the Matrix universe and his reverence for the Wachowskis' groundbreaking work promise a new chapter that respects the franchise's legacy while pushing its boundaries. The Matrix, since its debut in 1999, has been a cornerstone of modern cinema, introducing audiences to a dystopian reality where humanity is trapped in a simulated world. Its profound impact on both visual effects and narrative depth has earned the franchise over $1.8 billion at the global box office. However, the fourth installment, The Matrix Resurrections, faced challenges amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, underperforming in terms of box office revenue despite its ambitious vision.
A new Matrix movie has been announced (not just rumored) from Daredevil series creator Drew Goddard. Lana Wachowski will be an executive producer. If you enjoy this episode or any of the episodes still to come across this weekend, please do consider donating via the link below: Donate to our fundraiser here!On today's episode – a conversation about writing with the incredible Lilly Wachowski. Or at least, we were meant to speak about writing. The plan was to talk about Lilly's creative practice. About the queer-coded stories of collective resistance and love in the face of dystopia that she's told across a glittering three-decade career. One of those stories in particular – The Matrix trilogy, co-written and directed with her sister Lana Wachowski – was the looking glass through which Al stepped into a new way of seeing both cinema and the world when he was eleven-years-old, so you can imagine his excitement to discuss her relationship with the page. That is not what went down. Yes, there's plenty in our conversation about how Lilly approaches writing. About why she prioritises telling stories not about individualist heroes, but about communities coming together to defy power. About how writing film and TV right now a release valve for the filmmaker, helping her channel her “trans rage” at a system that tramples over marginalised groups. You'll also hear her discuss why she believes great stories can offer an escape path for audiences out of that system. But that's not all we talked about. Across a hugely moving two-hours, Lilly explains how, when she looks back on her and Lana's early movies today, she sees clearly the “scratchings on the wall as they were clawing their way out the closet.” She speaks beautifully about her experience transitioning and about how she found her way back to herself after a period of burnout and about the amazing women around her growing up that she credits with shaping her. Listen out for candid discussion about the “impossible bar” that The Matrix set for her and Lana, and Lilly's thoughts on A.I in 2023, as someone who co-created one of our culture's defining works about that technology. You'll also hear about the joy of her experience on Work In Progress, and why the next chapter of her career is going to be all about “throwing my trans body against the mono culture that Hollywood is gravitating towards.” It was a huge privilege to share this conversation with Lilly who we can't thank enough for her openness and insights. Again, this conversation is in aid of the Entertainment Community Fund, who do extraordinary work lifting up storytellers of all descriptions and have been a vital support for entertainment industry workers affected by this summer's strikes. It's time to jack back in one last time. Gita Jackson is back alongside Rob, Patrick, and Cado to talk about The Matrix Resurrections, the latest movie in the Matrix franchise, and one who's own inception is scrutinized within this film. While Gita, Patrick, and Cado left their initial viewings having enjoyed the film, Rob was ultimately left cold. We get into how our different reads diverged, the ways in which this Matrix fits into Lana Wachowski's work since the original trilogy, queer text and subtext, and the true power of love.Articles Discussed: Body Talk: Conversations on Transgender Cinema with Caden Mark Gardner, Hanya's Boys by Andrea Long Chu Hosted on Acast. In the second installment of Season 2 Episode 13, we discuss Keanu's reprisal of Neo in Matrix Resurrections (2021). We debate the goals of the film, both from the perspective of the audience as well as from the perspective of Lana Wachowski and Keanu Reeves. Although the film was widely considered the “worst” in , and what it means for the discussion of Keanu's agency. We talk about the new Thomas Anderson, the dichotomy of joy vs. profundity in the franchise, and connect the story to our other seasons.
On this episode National Recording Artist Mercy stops by to share her new single "Going Down" and we get the scoop on some other things she's doing in the film world. She also shares a fun fact that no one can google about her anywhere. You don't wanna miss it! MERCY isn't your typical Hollywood fairy tale. Born in Sun Valley, CA to a rock musician and a second-generation circus runaway turned film and television sound editors, she's no stranger to the struggles of what it takes to ‘make it' according to the standards of ‘the biz'. Her parents divorced when she was two and, although they were struggling financially, they agreed to provide her with piano lessons. She started composing her own music when she was just six years old. She made her feature film debut in Stuart Little along with numerous voice-over projects. Just as her young Hollywood career seemed about to take off, the rug was pulled out from beneath her when her mother and stepfather made an abrupt move to Albuquerque, NMfollowing the promise of steady work. To escape her abusive stepfather, MERCY ran away from home in her mid-teens. She found herself in Las Vegas with her at-the-time boyfriend singing for money on the street corners. Covers of Madonna, Heart and the Spice Girls provided enough money for them to survive while sleeping in her truck. When this proved to be a hard way to live, she moved back to California and into her father's home. Coming back to Los Angeles was no easy thing. She floated aimlessly, developing an addiction to alcohol that almost took her life. Fearing she couldn't stay in LA, she made the hard decision to move back to New Mexico after being accepted into the University of New Mexico. She supported herself through college, working multiple bartending jobs. When money was tight, she resorted back to living in her car to continue doing the things she loved. She developed an immense passion to wander through the fringes of the entertainment industry, thriving in the strangest of places, all while working toward a dual degree in Forensic Anthropology and Psychology. With a great sense of adventure, MERCY has gathered more experiences, good and bad, than most people can even dream of. She has numerous alternative and tattoo modeling appearances. She transitioned into burlesque in 2010 after winning a modeling pageant at the Rock the Ink tattoo convention. She expanded her entertainment skills into Fire Arts less than a year later. She graduated with honors in 2012, quickly learning the mainstream career she was pursuing no longer existed. So she joined the circus, literally. It was in this new environment MERCY was truly born! Her crowd-pleasing feats as a fire breather wowed audiences, fueling her ambition. She added fire dancing, glass eating and machete walking to her act with HELLZAPOPPIN Circus Sideshow Review. In 2016, MERCYlaunched her own two-girl circus road show, BIO DOLLS, a high-intensity, thrill-filled cabaretfeaturing aerial stunts, fire acts and acrobatics. MERCY has wowed audiences with her unique entertainment at New York's premier pride event Siren, along with Harley Davidson's Bike Week and numerous Electronic Music Festival performances. MERCY topped the bill as the featured burlesque dancer and fire performer for the Star Casino and five consecutive Rock the Ink tattoo conventions. Between circus tours and spotlight shows, MERCY returned to the big screen as a background performer in 2015's Maze Runner and in Shot Caller, released in 2017. She pulled double duty on Michael Bay's 6 Underground starring Ryan Reynolds in 2018 as both an actress and stuntwoman. In 2019, MERCY dove back into music headfirst, setting the stage for her techno-pop solo effort built on themes and subjects from her life to date – powerful vocals, hit music, circusextravaganza, sexy burlesque, flashy pyrotechnics and over-the-top entertainment. Her music was featured in India's blockbuster SAAHO starring Prabhas and her first single, BHAAG “SAAHO BANG BANG”, was released alongside the official movie trailer. In just two weeks, the trailer had more than 110 million views. Her next single is set to drop soon and dates for her debut European tour are in the works. The acting roles kept coming, even as MERCY focused on completing her EP/singles, which were delayed until the summer of 2021 by the pandemic. She earned a part in Lana Wachowski's Matrix Resurrections with Keanu Reeves and performed background/ stunt work in the Tom Holland/Mark Wahlberg Uncharted adaptation in 2020. She'll tell you herself, as she starts this new venture, she's just hitting her groove. She has found where she belongs. Combining her talents as a singer, songwriter, actress, model and circus performer to showcase MERCY, you're invited along for the journey with a simple promise – there will never be a dull moment – and a bit of advice - no matter what adversity life serves up, KEEP GOING. The Matrix: Resurrections pulls the ReWatchable panel back into the fold for one last ride with the original crew. Although everything seems slightly the same, this meta retelling of the series offers something new for everyone. Leaning into the film took a bit of effort at the start, but the film still laid the groundwork for another discussion of the larger themes of the piece from Lana Wachowski. It's been over twenty years since the original "Matrix" won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 1999 Academy Awards. While the two sequels, "Reloaded" and "Revolutions," did not go on to receive nominations, "The Matrix Resurrections" finds itself shortlisted for Best Visual Effects once again. Recently nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Best Visual Effects and receiving two nominations from the Visual Effects Society, enough time may have passed for voters to want to return to Lana Wachowski's world. DNEG visual effects supervisor Huw J Evans was kind enough to talk with us about the work he and his team completed for the film, which you can listen to down below. Enjoy! Happy Holidays everyone! This week, Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Josh Parham & Daniel Howat joined our main podcast review to discuss "The Matrix Resurrections," starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas & Jada Pinkett Smith. The fourth installment in the "Matrix" franchise nearly twenty years since "Revolutions" ended, the story of Neo and Trinity continues, this time solely directed by Lana Wachowski. What did we think of the story, the themes, the return of these characters, the introduction of new ones, the re-casting of old characters, the visual effects, and action sequences? We discuss all of these points and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review, so if you haven't seen the movie yet, head over to the theater or fire up that HBO Max account and plug back into the Matrix with us. We hope you enjoy it! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
