Released in 1999, The Matrix has become a timeless sci-fi classic. Whether it's the groundbreaking visual effects, the positively bonkers action sequences, or the disturbing looks at a world that has been consumed by AI and virtual experiences, there's something that will resonate with just about any member of the audience, even a quarter century after its initial box office success. But there's one moment in particular that perfectly illustrates the true horror at the heart of The Matrix. Since the titular concept of the film can only exist because humans have all been placed in a form of stasis, with their very bodies used to power the machines that now rule the world and create their shared reality, the big reveal of how that works needs to be suitably disturbing. And boy, does it deliver. When Neo (Keanu Reeves) chooses to wake up to actual reality, he's revealed as a hairless body, covered in goo, with feeding and breathing tubes stuffed down his throat. Here's another case of a sequel no one asked for. No one except Warner Bros. Studios, that is. The movie studio, understandably, wanted another one. The previous movies were huge money makers but the Wachowskis weren't interested. WB said "We're doing it with or without you." And here we are. Was this the movie the studio was expecting? Gemütliches Kaffeetrinken ist nicht Alles, was Matrix Resurrection mitbringt, aber vieleicht das, was am meisten Spaß macht, wenngleich der vierte Teil der Trilogie bei uns auch im Fazit deutlich wohlwollender als A Family Affair aufgenommen wird, und das nicht nur hinsichtlich der Liebespaar-Chemie. Dass Liebesfilme mit mittelalten Frauen und jungen Männern auch gut funktionieren können, zeigt The Idea of You. Die sehr alte und trotzdem sehr jung aussehende Blake Lively in Für immer Adaline hingegen kann eher weniger übezeugen, weswegen wir uns hier hin und wieder Auswahlmöglichkeiten wie in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch gewünscht hätten, bei dem wir uns sehr uneinig sind, wann er wirklich endet.

Jupiter Ascending was a movie sci-fi fans were really looking forward to. It would mark the long-awaited return of the Wachowskis to the sci-fi action genre, something they left behind when Speed Racer flopped theatrically. This promised to be a large-scale fantasy epic that fans hoped would be the new Matrix. Alas, things didn't work out that way, with critics savaging the film when it came out and audiences staying away in droves. Complaints included a muddled sci-fi universe, a bizarre choice to make Channing Tatum's hero part dog, and the fact that newly minted Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne's acting was so over the top that people thought he should have his award taken back. A charming performance by Mile Kunis as the heroine and a solid score by Michael Giacchino was not enough to save this turkey. It would mark the Wachowskis' swan song as a team, with Lilly Wachowski stepping away from directing. Tino Rodriguez and Virgo Paraiso are metaphysical painters who create solo work and collaborative work.Tino Rodriguez expertly weaves together elements from Catholic idolatry, European Fairy Tales, Celtic fables, Mexican myths, and Native American legends as he explores the complexity of spirituality, sexuality, and transformation. The duality found in Western religions- good and evil, heaven and hell, spirit and body- intermingle in a vision that makes such distinctions irrelevant. Tino was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, he holds an MFA from the University of Albuquerque. His work has been shown in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Boston, Washington DC, and Berlin, and resides in permanent collections at the San Jose Museum of Art (San Jose, CA, The Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento, CA), and the Nevada Museum of Art (Reno, Nevada).Virgo Paraiso describes his work thusly: “Through your divine light, the universe awakens and consciousness blooms…The visions in my paintings are of deep, lush paradise worlds that depict the profound connection between all sentient beings, the oneness of all things. These mindscapes are portals that can open up our sense of perception and remind us of what we truly are in essence, which is infinite love and beauty. We are true divine wisdom. We are the source of existence. We are life itself.” Virgo was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. He grew up between Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii, and San Francisco, and he has studied art, and exhibited in all of these places, as well as New York, Boston, and Berlin.
