More at https://www.philosophytalk.org/shows/american-futures. When Philosophy Talk co-founder Ken Taylor passed away in 2019, he was working on a manuscript titled Farewell to the Republic We Once Dreamed of. Was Ken right to think the American experiment is on the verge of collapse? Are we heading for authoritarian rule, a national divorce, or even a civil war? Or could better days be on the horizon? In Ken's honor, Josh and Ray devote their end-of-year special to probing the future of the American republic with Barbara Walter from UC San Diego, Tamsin Shaw from New York University, and Rob Reich from Stanford University.
Ben Affleck's Argo was a runaway hit in 2012. His highly anticipated follow-up to The Town, it finally won Affleck the respect from his peers that he always deserved, with it earning a Best Picture Oscar, despite the man being shut out as director in a controversial move. Audiences and critics alike raved about the movie, but it wasn't without controversy. Some involved with the original “Canadian Caper” that the film was based on slammed it for various inaccuracies. However, these were largely dismissed as the film set out to be entertainment rather than a documentary, which is fair enough. In this episode of WTF Really Happened to this Movie, we dig into the true story behind Argo, including the truth behind the CIA operative Affleck played, Tony Mendez, who, as the film depicts, cooked up a scheme where he pretended to be scouting locations for a sci-fi pic to rescue hostages in the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979-1981. We dig into the Canadian and American roles in the caper, as well as the actions of diplomat Ken Taylor. He played a small part in the film but was credited by many (including then-President Jimmy Carter) as the real hero behind the operation. This episode of WTF Really Happened to this Movie is written by Jake Dee, narrated by Steve Seigh and edited by Paul Cooper. Let us know in the comments whether or not you think Argo's inaccuracies are a serious issue or if this is just a regular Hollywood occurrence in the pursuit of entertainment.
More at https://www.philosophytalk.org/shows/referring-world. On December 2, 2019, Ken Taylor announced that he finally had “an almost complete draft” of a book he had been writing for years. “I think I'll pour a glass of wine to mark the occasion, before plunging back into the work that is still to be done,” he wrote. Tragically and unexpectedly, he died later that same day. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of some colleagues, his book, "Referring to the World: An Opinionated Introduction to the Theory of Reference," has just been published. In this special episode, Josh and Ray discuss Ken's ideas about reference with USC philosopher Robin Jeshion, who helped bring the book to fruition.
Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are impacting nearly every industry, including learning and development (L&D). How will it shape the future of corporate training as a whole? Training Industry's CEO, Ken Taylor, and Dr. Tom Whelan, director of research, recently sat down to discuss how AI is bringing both challenges and opportunities to the L&D field. Their conversation offers greater clarity for learning leaders around the future of L&D in the age of AI. In this episode, we outline five things you need to know, as a learning leader, about AI and its potential to impact corporate training as we know it.

Episode 267: On November 4, 1979, Iranian militants attacked the US embassy in Tehran, Iran, taking 66 diplomats and staff members hostage. Remarkably, six diplomats managed to slip away unnoticed. These individuals were Robert Anders, Cora Lijek, Mark Lijek, Joseph Stafford, Kathleen Stafford, and Lee Schatz. Schatz sought refuge at the Swedish embassy, while the others went to the British embassy. However, upon nearing the embassy, they encountered a large crowd of protestors obstructing their path. Consequently, they decided to take shelter at Anders' residence and devise their next steps. After six harrowing days, the six American diplomats sought refuge at the Canadian embassy. The Canadian Ambassador to Iran, Ken Taylor, and his team provided shelter to the American diplomats and false Canadian passports. The Canadian government played a critical role in the mission to rescue them. The then-Canadian Prime Minister, Joe Clark, approved the operation and fully supported Ambassador Taylor and his team. The rescue mission, known as the “Canadian Caper,” involved the creation of a fake movie production company called “Studio Six” and the production of a fake science fiction film called “Argo.” The Canadian embassy staff, along with the American diplomats, managed to escape from Iran using a combination of air travel and ground transportation. They were safely evacuated from Iran on January 28, 1980. The role played by Canada in the hostage crisis was highly appreciated by the US government and earned Canada international recognition for helping resolve the crisis. On this episode, we discuss the eighty-fifth Best Picture Winner: “ARGO.”"Argo" is a historical drama thriller based on the 1999 book by U.S. Central Intelligence Agency operative Tony Mendez, titled "The Master of Disguise," and the 2007 Wired article by Joshuah Bearman, titled "The Great Escape: How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran". The film deals with the "Canadian Caper", in which Mendez led the rescue of six U.S. diplomats from Tehran, Iran, under the guise of filming a science fiction film during the 1979–1981 Iran hostage crisis. On Nov. 4, 1979, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran, taking 66 American hostages. Amid the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge with the Canadian ambassador. Knowing that it's just a matter of time before the refugees are found and likely executed, the U.S. government calls on extractor Tony Mendez to rescue them. Mendez's plan is to pose as a Hollywood producer scouting locations in Iran and train the refugees to act as his "film" crew. Directed by Ben Affleck, the film stars Ben Affleck as Tony Mendez, Bryan Cranston as Jack O'Donnell, Alan Arkin as Lester Siegel, John Goodman as John Chambers, Victor Garber as Ken Taylor, Clea DuVall as Cora Lijek and Kyle Chandler as Hamilton JordanHere on The Envelope, we discuss & review every Best Picture Winner in the Academy Awards History.

We are grateful for the friends we have made along the way of producing this weekly podcast this year. From DKM, Kevin Frazier, and Jay Cal we wish you the best Thanksgiving possible. Please enjoy your family and feast. On this special episode of The Alliance Guys Podcast, two NWA World Jr. Heavyweight Champions discuss what that championship means. Neither man had lost that title. Barrett Brown was the last man to hold the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship prior to the ownership change. The title's history was officially sealed before the NWA 70th Anniversary Show. There was precedent set that if the NWA were to revive the Jr. Heavyweight Division, that Barrett Brown would be recognized as champion, but it doesn't look like the title will be back any time soon. Initially recorded as part of the an Introspective of the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Division, Barrett Brown discusses his time with the NWA, working for both Ken Taylor's NWA Southwest and working for the NWA in Texas under Bruce Tharpe's ownership. We spend time reflecting on what it meant for him to win the World Jr. Heavyweight Championship, his teaming with Kevin Frazier, and more. We discuss his time working with New Japan of America and what's next for the world class athlete.
