Foundations of Amateur Radio One of the potentially trickier aspects of putting together your shack is connecting the radio to the antenna. On the face of it, the challenge is limited to making sure that you have mating connectors on both ends, but when you actually start implementing this you'll run into several other considerations. The very first one as I said is the connector. Every amateur I've ever spoken to goes through the same process. You pick a connector, typically the one that your radio comes with, then you adapt the connector on your coaxial cable to suit, then you'll get an SWR meter, a dummy load, some testing gear, a coax switch or two, perhaps another radio, or an amplifier and along the way you'll discover that you now have a growing collection of connectors to choose from, and that's just the connectors inside the shack. After considering connectors, you'll start to contemplate the coax itself. You'll likely weigh price against signal loss, but there are other aspects to the selection of the right coax for the job. For example, how do you get the coax actually into the shack? One of the main challenges associated with solving that problem is surprisingly something that rarely affects our hobby, other than any human factors associated with the phenomenon of "weather". Getting coax into a shack generally involves passing through a weather proof barrier of some sort. In doing so, you're likely to create a place where the weather can make its way into places it's not supposed to. Water can and will travel along your coax. Hopefully on the outside of it, but if you're unlucky, on the inside too, likely destroying it along the way. At first glance you'll think that water only travels down with gravity and in an ideal world you'd be right, but as it happens, water will happily do other things like get blown by the wind, or condensate in temperature gradients, like those found near a hole you just created in your lovely weather proof barrier. If your shack has existing openings, they're generally the easiest to appropriate, things like gaps in the eves, existing vent holes, between roof tiles or sheet iron, plenty of existing places where you can get from inside to outside a shack. Note that this is also the case if your shack is a trestle table tucked away in an office, like mine. Before I continue, I'm about to raise some potential safety issues, but I'm not an occupational health and safety professional, so, do your own due diligence. If you do need to go into your roof space, height aside, consider it a dangerous place. Make sure that there's someone to check on you and consider alternatives to climbing up there. Wearing a face mask and full body clothing is a very good idea. Often you'll find exposed wires, deteriorating or toxic insulation and other nasty things, conductivity of steel roof frames and pipes are also a hazard, so be extremely reluctant to venture there. Avoidance is preferable. Working at heights 101: Don't .. that said, there may be no alternative. You can lift corrugated iron sheets by undoing the roofing screws. If you do, make absolutely sure that you don't make a string of water inlet points when you put it all back together. In lifting a sheet, you can access the roof space and run your coax. Sometimes the gap between the corrugation and the rafters is sufficient to push the coax through, but if you live in a hot climate, make sure that it doesn't touch the sheeting, since coax is likely to distort, if not outright melt, if it's in direct contact with the iron sheet while the sun is belting down on it. Consider the temperature rating of your coax. Similarly, terracotta roof tiles tend to have enough space to allow coax to enter the roof space. Be very careful, since they're often fragile and potentially irreplaceable. Look for openings like existing roof fittings, things like chimneys, vent pipes, roof ridges, etc. for simpler points of entry. If you need to make a hole in your roof and seal it, there's special rubber grommets for this purpose. You cut a little opening in the grommet, too tight for the coax, then force it through. Seal to the roof with UV-stable silicone and you're good to go. Check them every so many years, they deteriorate. Speaking of silicone, if there's an existing hole that you're using, don't just seal it up, it might be there for a reason. Windows often have vent holes or gaps that will fit some types of coax and there's inserts you can use to open a sliding window that will accommodate coax, but consider the security of that window before you commit. There's also special flat coax for running through a window frame or under a door, but check before you buy that they're suitable for the job. Ladder line is also an option, it's much thinner, can travel longer distances, but its performance can be affected by corrugated iron and other conductors. Rarely if ever does the initial acquisition of coaxial cable involve details like "bending radius", the smallest turn you can make with the coax without destroying its characteristics, since bending causes the insulation, the core and the shield to distort to some degree and with it, affect the RF passing through. Whichever path your coax takes, consider that you can cut it short, but not long. If you really must know how long the coax is, use some string to run along the proposed path, but beware, the string has a bending radius that approaches zero, coax does not. Most coax will specify a bending radius for fixed and repeated bending. The fixed one is for a one time only bend and 65 mm is typical. Thinner coax tends to have a smaller bending radius, but that might affect the signal loss, or the budget, or both, so take that into account. Cutting and joining also introduces points of failure, places of moisture ingress, thick spots that cannot be pulled through existing holes, and plenty of other hidden fun and games, in other words, don't be stingy, get it right, it might cost a few bob extra, but you'll have a happier time of it. If you need to run your coax inside a wall, the tool you're looking for is called a "Cavity King", not of the embalming variety, though relevant if you happen to do something foolish like drill a hole through an existing power wire in your building, so don't start drilling holes where it suits without checking first. If you do, make sure that you drill on an angle facing upwards from the outside and find a place where the coax itself doesn't get wet on the way in. Speaking of holes. Terminate the coax after you installed it, not before. You can use electrical tape to attach a rope to pull the coax along its route without damaging the coax. Before you close up the roof and pack everything away attach the connectors to the coax and properly test it. If it fails your tests, it's easier to run it again with everything in place than it is to start from scratch, ask me how I know. In my shack, I have a run of RG-214 that goes to my VHF/UHF vertical, I also have a run of quad shield RG-6 that goes to my HF antenna. If you're familiar with coax indicators, you'll know that RG-6 is actually 75 Ohm, not 50 Ohm. Given that it's made from aluminium, not copper, it's also an absolute turd to solder. What it does have going for it is that it's absurdly cheap, since its used in satellite dish installations across the planet. It also very handily can be terminated with F-type compression connectors, which in the 25 years I've used them, I've yet to see fail. The F-type connector can accommodate a handy BNC adaptor, bringing us back into the realm of amateur radio. My coax goes under the corrugated iron of my roof through the plasterboard of my office wall, hidden away in a cupboard, snakes under the cupboard door, along the wall to the termination coax switch that is in turn connected to my radio, more on that another time. The two coax runs are tied together, to ensure that they don't coil weirdly, don't pose a trip hazard and it's connected to various fixed points along its path. None of it is permanent, other than the hole in the plasterboard, inside a cupboard, behind a faceplate. So, after removing the coax, a blanking plate brings everything back to invisible if that's ever required. What happens outside is a whole different story and what it attaches to, yet another. The point is that from the place of picking the right connector, you likely discovered that routing coax is potentially a bigger challenge than you might have considered at first. Dan cut his teeth in the jazz scenes in Chicago and Dallas before returning home to Northeast Ohio to continue his career as a performer and educator. You've heard the trio on the program before with a duo of performers from Pittsburgh, but this configuration features Cleveland area performers Jordan McBride on Bass and Gabe Jones on Drums. This performance captures the trio in their last dress rehearsal before going into the studio to record their debut album The Architects which is now available.

As human beings navigating this reality I'm sure this is one we've all struggled with at one time or another. The feeling of losing control or needing to be “more” in control of the situation. That is one of the illusions that the duality of this experience leads us to believe…  that control is even possible. We create all this unnecessary pressure for ourselves. To do the right thing or say the right thing to maintain that illusion and “create” the outcome we desire. The reality is that it is nothing we are “doing” that is bringing about those outcomes.  It is all about what we believe and how in alignment we are with the energy of what we desire. If we logically know that there is truly no such thing as control, where does that innate need to have it come from? Well that is exactly what we explore in this episode.  For most spiritual schools are important to grow your spirituality, be it the Kundalini or that you open your heart, third eye, and crone chakra…And for that we need energy!Our whole body needs his energy to stay healthy and for sexuality…. If we use our sexual energy for our spirituality then everything would be easy. Because our body uses 1/3 of his energy just only for sex…We can even use our sexual energy to heal our spine or growing our brain… We hear from our spiritual gurus that sex is bad…And I absolutely agree to a certain level, so it would be much better if the guru's parents had avoided making sex to create such a creature (Guru) that is denying sex!!! If you deny, abuse, or think negatively about sex or afraid of sex, then your first chakra or the chakra that is responsible for the sex is blocked… So that you can't use your sexual energy for your spirituality or even worse you will attract diseases that are related to sex. Monks and Nuns have 2 times more prostate cancer or breast cancer than normal beings!!!!!!Let look at how sex energy is causing a Samadhi! When a baby sucks the mother milk, it goes in a Samadhi when the mother is loving and gives the baby the time that it needs to suck the milk in a calm way… How does the baby make that? The Taoist found out:  When the baby sucks the milk, it squeezes the vagina muscles or it pulls up the testicles without squeezing the anus… At the same time, it pulls up the energy from the lowest chakra to the crone chakra. And then it needs to breathe out and breathe in and breath out… In this time it squeezes the tongue against the roof of the mouth and it relaxes the muscles of the vagina or testicles… Maybe, we have done it before… Today, the Taoists are doing the same thing … They just imagine to suck milk and when breathing in they contract these muscles and by breathing out they put the tongue against roof of the mouth and relax these muscles… After the Qigong and the Yoga system, we have a gate of death/hell, where the spirit/soul leaves our body when the body dies… And this gate of death is located at the lowest point of our body this means the vagina or the bone-cave between the testicles and the anus… And this Gate (related to the huh sound) has energetically a direct connection to the crone chakra… The next important Energy-point  (related to the Ohm sound) is at the end of the vagina (uterus mouth)… Both points are crucial for the Kundalini or for spiritual energy… If we do have an energy-block in this area, the energy can not be used for healing, spirituality and even will cause severe diseases… For the females is sex in any case good! Because a normal woman feels love when she has intercourse with her darling… this means she pulls up the energy from her lowest chakra to her heart chakra… And she gets the male energy for free! Even better if the clitoris is stimulated all of her organs will be energized … Never the less, the females lose all of their sexual energy, during their periods.    For the males is a certain amount of sex good. The males lose their energy when they ejaculate… And too many ejaculations leads to severe diseases (aids, immune weakness) and premature aging. Never the less the males can learn Tao-love or the sexual Tantra to even enjoy more the sex without too many ejaculations…If the males reduce the number of ejaculations to 50% everything will work out good. How we can get the energy upwards…1.)  Sound strategyWith the right sound, we can move our energy to the place we want.Even we don't have to express the sound loudly … The Sufis and the Taoists have developed great sound strategies to become blissful and to heal the body.For every organ exist a specific sound and for a different region of our body exist specific sounds. And we can move from one area to another area the energy with different sounds. For this, we use different sounds… For instance, the Sufis are using the Dikir “Huh” “Allah” .The “Huh”- the sound is pronounced like the vocal of the “Foot, look, school” and the “Allah” is pronounced like the vocal of “run, just”. With the “Huh” we activate the first chakra and with “Allah” the heart chakra and so the energy rises from the first chakra to the heart chakra. And we can combine the sound strategies with body movements like the methods of Sufis (Sufi breathing, Dikir/Sikir), Osho techniques, or the Tao techniques)… And these are very powerful techniques to become blissful and relaxed. With the right rhythm, we can calm down our mind…Why? Guitarist Dan Bruce and Pianist Theron Brown are frequent quests on the program, so they don't really need much of an introduction. They both have their own unique style and appear here in advance of their recent releases. For Theron Brown this was 2024's Spirit Fruit and for Dan Bruce this was his 2025 release with his trio project Ohm!. They both serve as Artistic Directors of regional jazz festivals. For Theron this is the Annual Rubber City Jazz and Blues Festival, and for Dan this is the annual Hingetown Jazz Festival here in Cleveland. While Theron works with the Akron Symphony Orchestra and scores larger ensemble pieces, Dan prefers to focus his lead creative energies in a duo. This is a product of his time in Chicago and it creates a unique sound in a staged venue the size of The Bop Stop, as you'll here on this program.  There are a lot of duos performing what you might call a wallpaper gig, but Dan really focuses his performance energy in featuring the duo at the center of a performance, which is unique here in Northeast Ohio. For this episode the Crew took a little field trip to Weston, West Virginia to visit and tour a haunt that has been on their collective bucket lists for a very long time.  The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. This storied building has been the topic for many an adventurous ghost-hunter. But nothing do the Crew but experience it for ourselves.  And to be honest, it was not exactly what any of us were expecting. Trans-Allengheny was developed based on Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride's theory, referred to as the “moral treatment” of the insane. His teaching influenced hundreds of mental facilities across the nation.  His designs boasted  long wings that afforded lots of sunlight and air to comfortable living quarters so that the buildings themselves lifted the patient's morale. These facilities were designed to be entirely self-sufficient providing the patients stimulating mental and physical activities. We think it is due to this “intention” that the building has a much lighter energy that one would expect. However, we definitely got our money's worth when the tour began to look at much more recent patient treatments like the cold baths and lobotomies. Obviously there were dark spaces and moments on the tour, but all in all a pleasant afternoon. Come with us on a road trip!  In this episode the Crew discusses their experiences as we toured the famed Biltmore Estate here in Asheville, North Carolina and visited the King Tutankhamen exhibit on the estate grounds. George Vanderbilt, grandson of shipping entrepreneur and industrialist Cornelius “the Commodore” Vanderbilt, began purchasing land in Asheville area in 1888 ending up with 125,000 acres for what would become his country estate. Vanderbilt hired architect Richard Morris Hunt to design and build the 250-room château, the largest single family home in the United States. The house opened to guests for the first time in December of 1895. Listen as we discuss the synchronicities that accompanied us on the drive to Asheville, as well as some of the spirits and energies we experienced inside the house and on the grounds of the estate.
