Freaked is a 1993 American black comedy film directed by Tom Stern and Alex Winter, both of whom wrote the screenplay with Tim Burns. Winter also starred in the lead role. Both were involved in the short-lived MTV sketch comedy show The Idiot Box, and Freaked retains the same brand of surreal humour seen in the show. Freaked was Alex Winter's last feature film before he shifted to cameo and television films for many years until 2013's Grand Piano.
Or, the Death of Cinema podcast Nicole Veneto joins from Boston to discuss Alex Winter and Tom Stern's irreverent, gag-filled 1993 monster comedy 'Freaked'. The film is a genuine cult classic that was greelit, following the success of the Bill & Ted films and Winter and Stern's short-lived MTV program 'Idiot Box', with an impressive $12 million budget and then quickly killed by 20th Century Fox after a change in management. We discuss the film's unique cacophony of styles, taking inspiration from a number of cultural objects including Zucker Brothers comedies, punk rock legends Butthole Surfers, classic beach party films, and The Evil Dead movies. Then we praise the legendary team of practical special effects and makeup artists (including veterans of John Carpenter films like 'Big Trouble in Little China' and Chuck Russell's classic 1988 remake of 'The Blob') who brought the hilarious cast of freaks to life. Finally, we detail the executive decisions that very nearly railroaded 'Freaked' out of existence, and eulogize the brief moment in time when big studio money was willing to gamble on spectacular, impractical filmmaking and craft. Is there space for counterculture when everything is vying for mainstream approval? How do we choose offbeat retro movies for our repertory audiences, and what goes into programming a film series? Plus, we look at two offbeat '90s movies that culture wasn't prepared for yet: Alex Winter and Tom Stern's Freaked and Peter Berg's Very Bad Things.

Based on the play by Kaite O'Reilly, THE ALMOND AND THE SEAHORSE is the directorial debut of both notable actor and BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Celyn Jones; and Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated cinematographer Tom Stern. Sarah (Rebel Wilson) is an archaeologist who loves her husband Joe (Celyn Jones) but after a traumatic brain injury (TBI) their love is trapped in the past. Toni (Charlotte Gainsbourg) is an architect and loves her partner Gwen (Trine Dyrholm) but after a TBI they have been imprisoned in a fifteen-year loop. Love is the only thing that keeps them all going but something has changed, and both Sarah and Toni are determined to not let it all unravel as they face their fears of being forgotten by the people they love most. Co-director, co-writer and co-star Celyn Jones (Six Minutes to Midnight, Born a King) joins us for a conversation working with his award winning, frequent Clint Eastwood collaborator, co-director and cinematographer Tom Stern, assembling a superb cast of actors and the challenge being in front of the camera and in the director's chair for his debut feature film project. On this episode, we spoke with Tom Stern, writer of Fear Less, Sell More: Find Your Courage and Make Millions. Tom was the black sheep in a family of lions. Tom's father was one of the founders of cable television, and his great grandfather, a prominent philanthropist, was the CEO and chairman of Sears, Roebuck and Co. at the turn of the twentieth century. As an ADHD child with dyslexia, Tom was unable to live up to those lofty expectations, and as a result, suffered from extreme anxiety. Over time, by developing his creativity, as a jazz musician, stand-up comedian, writer/producer for HBO, and comic strip creator, he found his greatest success in sales. First as a talent agent for celebrity comedians and then as president of his own executive search firm. Leveraging what he calls "sales expression" he has sustained excellence in the business world for over a quarter century. Tom's passion is influence, using logic and emotion to engender courage in others. It is Tom's goal to help others achieve success in sales and realize their dreams by overcoming their fears. His new book is now available through Tom's site: tomsterncentral.com/. S2 E7 MANIC PIXIE BLOOD BREEZE. AN INSTANT AND INFAMOUS CLASSIC! One of our best epsiodes for two films no one has even seen. 1973's Breezy has gone virtually unseen by anyone for nearly 50 years. Unearthed forgotten masterpiece or... not quite? It is a rare, early Eastwood directorial effort in which he does not appear and features William Holden at 53 in a relationship with a free spirited girl in her late teens named Breezy. What's the deal with that? It has to be some kind of... mentor/friend thing, right??? Because otherwise it'd be less a May/December thing and more of a Paleozoic/Cenzoic thing. Is it as creepy as it sounds or is it something sweet? Jack and Ken find out along with chatting about 2002's Blood Work, which is Eastwood's last role as a member of the law and his first collab with podcast fave Tom Stern as DP. Based on the Michael Connelly book of the same name, Eastwood's character gets a heart transplant and later the sister of the heart donor comes and asks him to solve the mystery of how/why her sister died. Then the legendary serial killer THE CODE BREAKER comes back ready to leave some clues only a dumb kid can solve! Full of heart or a lot of work to sit through? BONUS: Ken and Jack leave their own google reviews for each film. BLOOD WORK: 00:03:34BREEZY: 00:36:59
During pre-production on Flags of Our Fathers, Clint Eastwood was doing research and became curious about who it was on the Japanese side of the Battle of Iwo Jima who was leading their troops. This interest led him down a rabbit hole of curiosities that made him want to tell that story too. When he brought this up to producer Steven Spielberg, they decided that it was interesting enough to make a second film detailing that perspective. With that, Letters From Iwo Jima was born. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Foreign Language Films Nominated for Best Picture series with Eastwood's 2006 film Letters From Iwo Jima. We talk about the interesting journey this film took in getting put together as a companion piece to the film Eastwood was originally making about the famous WWII battle. We discuss the reasons this film ended up in our series but was not eligible to be nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. We look at the nature of Japanese society and the rituals depicted in this film, and chat about why this film connected with so many Japanese people on its release. We chat about Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, and Ryô Kase and look at what they each bring to the table. We also talk about the casting and the nature of acting, and why this was Phyllis Huffman's last film with Eastwood as his casting director. We look at the incredible albeit muted cinematography of Tom Stern paired with the great production design by the legendary Henry Bumstead in his last film. And we touch on the music and the composers behind it. It's another strong entry into our series and despite its sobering content, we have a fantastic conversation about it.

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 84: Alex Winter Many people know Alex Winter as the iconic character Bill S. Preston, Esq. from the hit Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and its sequels, but over the past few decades, Alex has become a prolific director of several TV, film and documentary projects. Alex was a child actor, with roles on Broadway, film and television, shooting his own projects on a wind-up 16 mm Bolex camera in his spare time. As a young actor, he followed cinematographer Michael Chapman (Jaws, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver) around on the set of The Lost Boys whenever he had downtime. After graduating from NYU film school, Alex and creative partners Tom Stern and Tim Burns created The Idiot Box, a sketch comedy show for MTV. They had creative control but not much money, so Alex, Stern and Burns moved on, making their own comedic film, Freaked, which has become a cult favorite. Alex went on to shoot and direct several music videos for bands like The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Helmet. For his most recent documentary film, Showbiz Kids, Alex found his personal experience and sensitivity as a fellow child actor immensely helpful for interviewing his subjects. The film profiles actors Evan Rachel Wood, Wil Wheaton, Henry Thomas, Mara Wilson, Todd Bridges, Milla Jovovich, Jada Pinkett Smith, the late Cameron Boyce and Diana Serra Cary (“Baby Peggy”) who tell their own stories and Hollywood experiences, bad and good, of growing up as child actors. The doc also follows two aspiring child stars as they try to break into the business or further their careers. For his upcoming documentary Zappa, Alex wanted to tell the definitive story of Frank Zappa's life and work. With the cooperation of the Zappa family, he had unprecedented access to Frank Zappa's home movies and recordings. Alex will also be seen acting once again as Bill with buddy Keanu Reeves in Bill & Ted Face The Music, as soon as a release date is set. After several poor test screenings and a change in studio executives who then found the film too "weird", the film was pulled from a wide distribution and only played on a handful of screens in the United States. The making of Freaked (1993) with director Tom Stern. How a film was pulled from theaters before it got a chance and hilarious Mr. T stories.
Episode 2 of our official podcast. Spencer Hickman and Mo Shafeek from our music division sit down with the creators of Freaked (Alex Winter, Tom Stern & Tim Burns) for a deep dive into the creation of both the film and soundtrack to the cult favourite freaked.
To coincide with the premiere release of the soundtrack for Freaked on vinyl, we've decided to take a break from Steven Spielberg's b-sides to look at one of the unsung comedy classics of the early '90s: Freaked. Written by Alex Winter, Tom Stern, and Tim Burns, as well as directed by Winter and Stern, the film follows Winter as Ricky Coogan, a sleazy former child actor who heads to South America to shill toxic chemicals. While there, he becomes the victim of Elijiah C. Scuggs, a demented circus leader, who turns Coogan into his latest disgusting creation. It's an irreverent cult classic that features body horror, nonsequiturs, and a heaping helping of the Butthole Surfers. OughtFiveFilm's Father Malone joins Chris to talk about the film, his favorite Spielberg film, and whether the film deserves all the hate. Along with Father Malone, Chris speaks with directors Alex Winter and Tom Stern, screenwriter Tim Burns, actress Megan Ward, and actors Derek McGrath, Lee Arenberg, and John Hawkes. You can follow Chris Stachiw at @Casualty_Chris and the Kulturecast @kulturecast. In anticipation of the theatrical release of John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum, we've declared May 2019 to be "Catching Up On Keanu" month! Each week in May, Kyle and Trevor will take turns selecting a Keanu Reeves film that they'd like to review for the show. In this first episode of "Catching Up On Keanu" month, Trevor selects the grotesque lovechild of Ren, Stimpy, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Freaked (1993)! Cheating the system a bit, Keanu actually only appears in the film in an uncredited capacity, while his longtime friend Alex Winters stars in, co-wrote and co-directed the film along with Tom Stern and Tim Burns. Alex Winter acting like Jim Carrey in Gremlin makeup! Keanu Reeves as Ortiz the Dog Boy! Randy Quaid as an insta-tanned ringmaster! A man with a sock for a head, sentient rastafarian eyeballs, a man farting an eternal flame, and a giant pile of shit shaped like Winona Ryder!
Welcome to The Science of Storytelling, the podcast that explores the most unique and engaging content collaborations between publishers and advertisers. Today on the show, we're speaking with Tom Stern, Director of Sales for Gothamist. According to Tom, Gothamist presents the day's news in a “tongue-in-cheek and shirt-untucked fashion,” which has made it a go-to source of information for New Yorkers – or anyone who wants to be a New Yorker. Last year, the site collaborated with Blue Apron to promote their Whole30 meals. While New Yorkers are infamous for never using their kitchens, the content emphasized how easy it can be to make meals at home if you can skip a few steps like meal planning and grocery shopping. No more spending an hour waiting in line at Trader Joe's. Tom shared with us the secret sauce that makes Gothamist successful, including how sharing stories like why Cynthia Nixon's bagel order is so controversial helps them build an intimate connection with readers. Many stars are (in)famous for the lists of must-have items that are to be stocked backstage or in their hotel rooms. During one tour in London, Barbra Streisand demanded rose petals in the toilet and 120 peach-colored towels. Mariah Carey wants gold faucets and new toilet seats installed in her room before she checks in. (We won't even go into Van Halen's reputed liquor requirements.) But such demands aren't limited to those in the entertainment business. Many Foreign Service officers have had to endure visits by high-level officials who have a seemingly endless list of incredible requests. Tom Stern served as Administrative Counselor in Bonn in the mid-1960's and had to deal with one of the political rock stars of the era, President Lyndon Johnson. LBJ's penchant for shower heads was well-known, as shown in this brief Vanity Fair article.
Tom Stern, author of Sutterfeld, You Are Not A Hero, talks with book blogger Anne Logan. Anne's Blog: http://ivereadthis.com
Tom Stern, author of Sutterfeld, You Are Not a Hero, talks about some of the philosophical questions in his novel with Dr. Jim Goetsch, professor of Philosophy.
Tom Stern, author of Sutterfeld, You Are Not A Hero talks art, creativity, and Errol Morris with Rob Clayton of the Clayton Brothers.
Tom Stern is a Lecturer in Philosophy at University College London, where he is also the Academic Director of the European Social and Political Studies programme. Before starting at UCL, he studied at Cambridge and at the University of Chicago. His research interests include Nietzsche and aesthetics. As regards Nietzsche, he has written a number of articles exploring various candidates for a positive ethics in Nietzsche’s philosophy. These include discussions of the concept of the Übermensch, of Eternal Recurrence, of Nietzsche’s conception of freedom and (for the Aristotelian Society) of amor fati. As regards aesthetics, his book – Philosophy and Theatre (Routledge) – is forthcoming in 2013. This podcast is an audio recording of Tom's talk - "Nietzsche, Amor Fati and The Gay Science" - at the Aristotelian Society on 21 January 2013. The recording was produced by Backdoor Broadcasting Company in conjunction with the Institute of Philosophy, University of London.

Interview with Chief Executive Tom Stern & Executive Vice President Rumi Kuli of optionsXpress International on entering different markets, regulatory hurdles, servicing customers internationally
An interview with TOM STERN, director, co-writer, and producer of THIS IS A BUSINESS - an indie feature in the truest sense. Made on a modest budget and completely outside established studio channels, THIS IS A BUSINESS is an Ionesco-esque comedy about a shipping clerk named Turtletaub who starts his own business knowing only that he intends either to create a product or to provide a service, and whichever one it is, he pledges, it will be good... for everyone. Turtletaub hires an awkward, kind day laborer (Ernesto) as his assistant and a confident yet conflicted salesman (Baltimore) as his sales force. Now all that Turtletaub needs is to figure out what it is that his business will do. But there is constant noise streaming through the vent in the ceiling of Turtletaub's unit, and the landlord keeps giving Turtletaub the run around, and his salesman has somehow started bringing in investment money even though they do not know what it is that their business does, and Turtletaub is not sure what it is, exactly, that he owes these investors. As the pressure builds and things start to move, Turtletaub seems farther and farther away from having his idea. Until one night, it hits... and it's great... Stern has also directed, produced, and written six short films and a number of plays. His short films - BLUE ME and THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF TOM STERN, CHAPTER SIX: THE NEW SCIENCE - have been programmed in festivals on both coasts (Imagefest, LA Shorts, Independent Exposure 2007), and his stage production of FEIFFER'S PEOPLE was performed at The International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
