Is Anora Our Oscar Frontrunner? Here Are Who We Would Vote For and Why at the 97th Academy Awards

Opening Credits: This week on Live Breathe Film with Doug and Murph...Feature Presentation: Spreading the Oscar Love - While we do agree on who we'd vote for in a majority of categories at this year's Academy Awards (step right up for another funny acceptance speech this season, Kieran Culkin), it was always going to be largely due to our mutual passion for Dune: Part Two and The Wild Robot once the nominations were announced. At the same time we do have a near equal amount of disagreement on each of our imaginary ballots even if it's mostly between winners and runner-ups. And as we each chose to abstain votes where we felt appropriate, there was only one pick where complete shenanigans were involved. It would make plenty of anonymous Academy voters proud!Yet somehow the shenanigans doesn't involve our individual or mutual bitterness with Hans Zimmer being deemed ineligible for his brilliant Dune: Part Two score, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross being snubbed for their top-tier musical craftsmanship in multiple categories for Challengers, or Marren Morris being ignored for her beautiful song, “Kiss the Sky”, from The Wild Robot, which both captures the emotions of the film during a pivotal scene while complementing the nominated score. Needless to say, Best Sound, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song turned into a long vent session despite playing fair with our votes.End Credits: Please make sure to Like, Follow, and Subscribe to Live Breathe Film!

We had an incredible turnout today for our annual Oscar Nominations LIVE Chat! Thanks to all the lovely folks who woke up early with us on Hollywood's biggest morning. "Emilia Pérez" leads all nominees with 13 -- which is historic for a foreign-language film -- followed by "The Brutalist" and "Wicked" with 10 each. We were thrilled by some nominations (Coralie Fargeat in best director for "The Substance") and bummed by the omission of others (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross in best score for "Challengers"). And we were proud and thrilled to receive such a tremondous outpouring of support for our LA Wildfire fundraiser. All the Super Chat and Super Thanks donations we've gotten will go toward three charities we've selected: the Entertainment Community Fund, Pasadena Humane Society and World Central Kitchen. Just from the stream alone, we raised $936.59, which is way more than we expected, and that number keeps growing as people have added to it in the hours since. So thank you all for your generosity. If you'd like to contribute, the YouTube link is here. Click on the three dots beneath the video, then Thanks. Let us know what your thoughts were on this year's nominations. And keep an eye out for our Oscar Predictions livestream, which will happen a few days before the Academy Awards on March 2.

Welcome to the DMF. Where I try to find out what motivates people behind the scenes in the world of acting and entertainment. Today on the podcast I am talking to film composers: Michelle Birsky and Kevin Henthorn. They just scored the new Netflix series' Terminator: Zero. I ask questions this episode. As always you can reach me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook with my name Justin Younts. Thank you for listening and sit back and enjoy. Welcome to the DMF. I'm Justin Younts. In this episode, we dive deep into the world of music composition, specifically focusing on our favorite scores and the creative processes behind them. One of my personal highlights was the song 'It'll Never Be the Same,' which felt incredibly special to us as we created it in a void, making it uniquely ours. I also share my excitement about the first cue in episode three, 'Emergence,' where I explored the character of the Terminator as a serial killer. This was a thrilling experience that allowed me to stretch my creativity and dive into the moodiness of the score. As we discuss our favorite scores, I mention how Mizaki's theme stood out for its dynamic range and the joy of recording it with a choir, reminiscent of my acapella days in college. We also touch on the potential for future seasons and how we can evolve our character themes, tailoring them to fit the scenes more effectively. Throughout our conversation, we reflect on the works of renowned composers like Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Johan Johansson, sharing our admiration for their unique styles. I express my desire to explore more indie projects, moving away from the sci-fi genre that often dominates our work. We also discuss the importance of having a routine, both in the morning and at night, to foster creativity and maintain balance in our lives. As we wrap up, I encourage viewers to check out our scores on Spotify, including 'Terminator Zero' and 'Mother Android.' This episode is a celebration of music, creativity, and the joy of collaboration. Thank you for joining us, and don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more insights into the world of music composition. 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:00:04 - Favorite Songs and Cues 00:01:46 - Future Plans for Another Season 00:02:42 - Favorite Scores 00:05:18 - Daily Routines and Meditation 00:07:23 - Current Reading and Listening 00:09:33 - Current Watching 00:12:31 - Contact Information

On today's NYFF62 podcast, we welcome director Luca Guadagnino, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, costume designer Jonathan Anderson, and cast members Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey to discuss Queer, the Spotlight Gala of the 62nd New York Film Festival, with NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim. Written in the early 1950s yet not published until 1985, William S. Burroughs's Queer has come to be considered a canonical work in the career of the Beat Generation author and a cornerstone of transgressive gay literature. In his wildly ambitious adaptation, Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, NYFF55) expertly evokes the book's post–World War II time period and cinematically translates Burroughs's iconoclasm with panache. In a transformative role, Daniel Craig immerses himself into Burroughs's alter ego William Lee, a habitual heroin user luxuriating in freedom and desiccation among a disconnected group of gay American expatriates in Mexico City in the late 1940s. When enigmatic, preppy ex-military kid Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey) catches Lee's eye, he swoons into a headlong love affair, commencing an odyssey that will take them all the way to the Ecuadorian jungle in pursuit of the ultimate high. Buoyed by go-for-broke performances from Craig and Starkey, and rollicking, unexpected supporting turns from Lesley Manville and Jason Schwartzman, Queer is a dazzling showcase for many in Guadagnino's stable of collaborators, including Challengers screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, and music composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It's a film that finds Guadagnino in his most formidable, gutsiest mode yet, a universal love story featuring expressionistic flights of fancy, gratifying moments of psychedelic surrealism, and surprising tenderness. Tickets to the New York Film Festival are moving fast! Get up-to-date information on all available tickets on a daily basis by visiting filmlinc.org/tix. Queer opens in theaters on November 27, courtesy of A24.

For the last couple weeks, I've been getting ready for a trip I'm going to make to Connecticut, to moderate a conversation between Jon Batiste and his wife, the author Suleika Jaouad. So I've been deep in my prep and research, and I thought about the first time I ever spoke to Jon Batiste, which was for a Song Exploder episode that came out back in March 2021. A lot has happened for Jon since then. At the time, his album We Are was brand new. The next year, he ended up getting 11 Grammy nominations, and winning 5 of them, including Album of the Year. Jon and Suleika were also the subjects of the award-winning documentary American Symphony. I really enjoyed our conversation, and I wanted to revisit it. So here it is:Jon Batiste is a pianist, songwriter, and composer from New Orleans. He's been nominated for multiple Grammys, and just won the Golden Globe and got an Oscar nomination for the soundtrack to the Pixar film Soul, which he composed along with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Jon is also a recipient of the American Jazz Museum's Lifetime Achievement Award, and on weeknights, you can see him as the bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In March 2021, he put out his new album, We Are. But the title track from it came actually came out much earlier, in June 2020. In this episode, Jon talks about how he drew from his roots, both at a personal level and at a cultural level, and wove all of it into the song. For more, visit songexploder.net/jon-batiste.

Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. MICHELLE BIRSKY AND KEVIN HENTHORN Most recently known for scoring The Netflix anime series Terminator Zero, The Lesbian Bar Project (documentary series, Roku) and Mother/Android (feature film, Hulu), Michelle Birsky and Kevin Henthorn are a married, composing duo based in Los Angeles. Their music is contemporary and emotional, often incorporating found sounds and vocals with a strong electro-acoustic pull. With years spent in the New York indie music scene, Michelle and Kevin bring a unique perspective to composition, drawing inspiration from composers like Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Mica Levi. Michelle, a vocalist, producer, and electronic musician, and Kevin, an accomplished guitarist and vocalist, bridge their talents into a cohesive, well-rounded entity that creates emotionally-driven, electro-acoustic music. The two have always had a strong interest in film scoring, but they came to it from different backgrounds. Michelle graduated from Kenyon College with a degree in music. Kevin graduated from the Film Conservatory at Purchase College. Michelle and Kevin met in Brooklyn in 2014 and for the majority of their 20's they pursued their own musical projects: Michelle, a synth-pop artist project called Birch, and Kevin, a folk-rock project called Cape Francis. During that time, Michelle also focused on film composing, writing for sync and working under esteemed composer Elliot Goldenthal. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, the pair decided to take the leap and move from NY to LA to focus on film composing, and soon were brought on to score Mother/Android, which premiered on Hulu in December, 2021. Together, through their music, Michelle and Kevin seek to help tell stories that broaden minds, and find truth and beauty in human life. Their latest project is Terminator Zero, the anime series, and latest in the Terminator franchise, which is coming soon to Netflix. If you've been subscribed for a while, you probably know I'm a big Nine Inch Nails fan and have been since 1990 when I saw them open up for Peter Murphy. The other day, I was watching a terrific video with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross breaking down some of their most iconic tracks. One of the more fascinating aspects of the video was how much Trent talks about process and how important the “feel” of the music was and still is. “When we write music,” Trent says, “it's coming from a place where its main intent is to have you feel a certain way. It's not coming from a love of melody and a joy of intricate chord progressions or technical wizardry.”I love this because he's not just chasing easy likes or trying to impress the audience. Instead he's focusing on how the work serves the overall project and on the relationship between the work and the audience. It's not a “look at me” type of thing, like a gratuitous guitar solo or a vocalist who takes every opportunity to sing an unnecessary run. That's not the point, which I think speaks to a level of creative maturity that's important to cultivate as any kind of artist. If you enjoyed this Iteration, I would love it if you would share it with a friend or two. And if it resonated with you on some level, I'd love to know why.
