What do you get when you mix cyberpunk philosophy, a rave in a cave, and a thousand Mr. Smiths? A sequel so ambitious it broke Big D's brain and made Gene question reality itself. This week, the Shat Crew finishes up listener Jeremiah's Sci-Fi Through The Ages series by plugging into The Matrix Reloaded, a film that doubles down on slow-mo kung fu, pleather trench coats, and high-concept jargon that may or may not mean anything. Is Neo still "The One," or just another guy with a Superman complex? Did Trinity and Neo's love scene spark human emotion—or just a need for brain bleach? And what's up with the Keymaker, the Merovingian, and that architect making coochie cakes? Prepare for laughs, rants, and maybe even some deep thoughts as we decode the most audacious freeway chase ever put on film. Whether you're Team Zion or just here for the bullet time, this is The Matrix Reloaded like only Shat can deliver. Plot Summary In The Matrix Reloaded, Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus return to fight for the survival of Zion, the last human city resisting machine domination. As Neo grapples with his destiny as "The One," he discovers deeper layers of the Matrix's control and faces powerful new adversaries like the upgraded Agent Smith and the enigmatic Merovingian. With time running out before a massive machine attack, the crew races to unlock the path to the Source and ultimately, human freedom. Emboldened by brilliant performances from its two leads Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly, the film is both an assured and nimble stylistic calling card for the future Matrix directors and a carefully studied lesbian romance, rendered in considered motif and visual flourish. We begin with an examination of the Wachowskis as filmmakers and how their work exists at a singular nexus of mass appeal and subversiveness. Then, we discuss the influence of feminist author and journalist Susie Bright, a key influence and collaborator on the film, and how she informed the Wachowskis' formal approach to formally conveying the slow burn of lesbian eroticism. Finally, we discuss the film's erotic sequences, how they transcend simple arousal, and what they tell us about the revolutionary capacity of sex and pleasure as a weapon against capitalism's confining homogeneity.Buy and read Xuanlin's book Revolutionary Desires: The Political Power of the Sex Scene at 404Ink.Read Xuanlin's Manifesto for the Modern Cinematic Sex Scene at AnOther.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Released in 1999, The Matrix has become a timeless sci-fi classic. Whether it's the groundbreaking visual effects, the positively bonkers action sequences, or the disturbing looks at a world that has been consumed by AI and virtual experiences, there's something that will resonate with just about any member of the audience, even a quarter century after its initial box office success. But there's one moment in particular that perfectly illustrates the true horror at the heart of The Matrix. Since the titular concept of the film can only exist because humans have all been placed in a form of stasis, with their very bodies used to power the machines that now rule the world and create their shared reality, the big reveal of how that works needs to be suitably disturbing. And boy, does it deliver. When Neo (Keanu Reeves) chooses to wake up to actual reality, he's revealed as a hairless body, covered in goo, with feeding and breathing tubes stuffed down his throat. While not quite the iconic moment that the bullet time fights and martial arts sequences are, it might very well be the most powerful moment in the film or its sequels. It's a moment that has stayed with us for over 25 years, which is why today we're asking the question: does the human body really generate enough electrical power to essentially serve as a battery?Take the red pill in the latest episode of Does it Fly? for the answers…https://youtu.be/9e-CZiFpd6oSUGGESTED VIEWING We based the majority of today's discussion just on the first film in the franchise, which is, of course, 1999's The Matrix. If you need a viewing order, it's followed by The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003. But we've gotta say, you're missing out if you don't check out the bizarre and cool The Animatrix, which fills in a lot of backstory. And count us among the folks who think 2021's The Matrix Resurrections is a much sharper movie than it gets credit for.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! The Simulation ArgumentEver wonder if you're living in a computer simulation? The roots of that argument come from Nick Bostrum and the details on it can be found here. How Much Power Output From Humans?Believe it or not, there have been respectable studies about the potential for the human body to generate power for small devices from everyday activities. A summary can be found here with some more in depth information here. Somewhat related, it's worth considering the difference between the efficiency of solar energy power and the use of power from biofuels. The Matrix Starter PackThere are three books that are key to understanding the themes of The Matrix, and it seems they were required reading on set of the film. They are: Jean Baudrillard's 1981 philosophical treatise Simulacra and Simulation, William Gibson's seminal work of cyberpunk fiction Neuromancer (which has yet to get the screen adaptation it deserves), and 1995's Out of Control by Kevin Kelly.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For a more recent take on a sci-fi dystopia, allow us to recommend our Squid Game episode! The disturbing practical effects of the Neo awakening scene does recall some of the more unsettling cyberpunk aspects of RoboCop, which we covered here.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in '80s and they break down its themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today! There is movies before 1999's The Matrix, and there is movies after The Matrix and those two worlds are not the same. Into a cinematic landscape of TV adaptations, potbolier thrillers, and Oscar-bait dramas came a film that kicked open the screen doors of the public's perception and changed movie-making forever. The Matrix is so ingrained into our idea of technology and culture that it's hard to imagine its absence, but we're here to try and pick apart its contribution to culture, misunderstanding the red pill, and the film's status as the ultimate cyberpunk artifact. In this episode, we discuss the inspirations behind the universe of the Matrix, its forebears in sci-fi and Hong Kong cinema, the trend of reality-questioning media in the 1990s, the power of the series's practical effects, the intentions of the creators, our fan theories and headcanon, and how it's ultimately a spiritual film. We also talk about "Who shot JR?", cool European AIs, high-caliber flipping, digital goulash, being more Dicky than Gibsonian, the Google Agent Smith AI, 'punkin in the '90s, Happy Meal levels of cultural penetration, Kate Moss kicking ass, fascinating straight people, killing a car with a sword, and a heist PLUS a rave cave?!Matthew Lillard is the One!The new edition of Lyda's book, Ressurection Code, is out now!https://wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/books-by-lyda-morehouse/resurrection-code/Join Kaliban on Twitch weekdays at 12pm for the Cyber Lunch Hour!http://twitch.tv/justenoughtropePut Just Enough Trope merch on your body!http://justenoughtrope.threadless.comMLOP is a part of the Just Enough Trope podcast network. Hey, you. Stop doom scrolling. You've landed where you belong. Ben Clarkson and Matt Bors return to Comic Book Couples Counseling with another Justice Warriors book, Vote Harder. And they're back just when we need them most, weeks away from a critical, very American election. As in the best romantic comedies, Swamp Cop and Officer Schitt are torn apart early on in Justice Warriors: Vote Harder. Bubble City embarks on its first-ever election, and it's doing something strange to its populace. They're trapped with a ballot George Orwell wouldn't wish on his most hated dystopia, and the city's most horrendous Bad Boys are the only ones who can save the day. Best of luck, citizens. Justice Warriors: Vote Harder is another vicious satire skewering contemporary society while highlighting the damned, nothing-new, never-ending cycle of corruption. Do you think your hell is the most hell that's ever hell'ed? Nah. It's the same old hell. It's only new to you. Eagerly, we lean into Ben Clarkson and Matt Bors, trying to discern any wisdom they've gained by plunging themselves into the world of Justice Warriors: Vote Harder. We continue to explore satire's purpose, why two dumb protagonists are the heroes we deserve, and how The Matrix Reloaded deserves a second viewing, if not a third, fourth, and fifth. Justice Warriors: Vote Harder is now available in trade paperback from Ahoy Comics. Follow Matt Bors on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. A guy with a fun personality and some really brilliant solutions to crazy ideas. Jay has been rewatching the Daredevil series and is remembering why he loved season 1 so much.    Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay revisited the sequel to the wildly popular Matrix original, Matrix Reloaded (2003). Despite the now dated innovative special effects, it was a really beautiful movie to watch that expanded the Matrix universe in a very unique way.  Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com, now featuring Daredevil Season 1. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.     Enjoy Movies!  In 1984, Michael Douglas was getting into producing and had purchased a script from a waitress he met at Alice's Restaurant (no, I'm serious!). He tried to get some very popular, handsome, macho actors to play the lead, opposite the up and coming Kathleen Turner. But ultimately he decided he'd just play the hero himself. With Robert Zemeckis at the directing helm, they set out to make a romantic adventure in the jungle. (But not really Columbia, because it was actually too dangerous) It became  a gigantic hit that established Douglas as a strong leading man, put Turner on the road to a string of hits, and gave Zemeckis the ability to create Back to the Future.    Would you give the kidnappers the map or would you go after the jewel? Would you try to romance Joan Wilder? First person that emails me with the subject line, “El Corazon” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know.
