Elinor and Edward's relationship is growing closer, but they are not actually engaged, much to Marianne's surprise. In fact, Elinor herself isn't sure of the degree of Edward's attachment to her. But the attachment is enough to catch the eye of Fanny Dashwood, who makes it clear in no uncertain terms that her family has high hopes for her brother's marriage - hopes that don't include Elinor Dashwood. Luckily for them, a letter has just arrived from one of Mrs. Dashwood's relations, inviting them to take up residence at his cottage in Devonshire. It's the perfect time for the family to make a move, and as they do, let their story move you along into a night of soft and relaxing sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Lydia and Wickham are off to Newcastle, which is a disappointment to Mrs. Bennet, but she's soon comforted by the news of the arrival of a familiar neighbor - Mr. Bingley is back in town. What's more, he's brought Mr. Darcy with him. The gentlemen call at Longbourn, and both Jane and Elizabeth's emotions are in a flutter. It's all too much for the two eldest Bennet girls, as they alternate between hopes of rekindling old affections, attempting to stay calm, and mitigating the intensity of their mother's reaction to both gentlemen. As the girls work out how they feel in this week's Friday Favorites, let their story comfort you into a peaceful night of restful sleep. -----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! The Dashwoods remain at Norland while they search for a place that will fit their new financial situation. Living with Fanny Dashwood is not pleasant, but there is one bright spot: her brother, Edward Ferrars. He has been staying with the family at Norland, and by all accounts to be forming an attachment with Elinor - she esteems him, which is high praise. Marianne finds Edward lacking in his understanding of art and literature, but their mother is pleased that her eldest daughter has found love. As Elinor and Edward's attachment grows, let it help you relax as you drift into another night of restorative slumber.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! After a tantalizing slip of information from Lydia, Elizabeth has been eager to learn why Mr. Darcy was at the Wickhams' wedding, and a letter from her aunt Gardiner has arrived that answers all her questions and more. It turns out that Mr. Darcy was the one who arranged the entire thing, from finding Lydia and Wickham in London, to paying off Wickham's debts to secure the marriage. It's more than Elizabeth can handle, but she does not want to allow herself to hope too much, lest she be disappointed. At least she can sleep a little easier having learned the truth, and you will too, as our latest Friday Favorites carries you away into a night of sweet and gentle sleep. -----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Mr. John Dashwood is still determined to help his sisters after the tragic early death of their father. But his wife, Mrs. Fanny Dashwood, has a few questions. After all, how much money do four single women really need? And surely Mr. Dashwood's deathbed promise to his father didn't mean financial support to his sisters? What if their own child were to ever need the money? It's all sounding very logical to Mr. John Dashwood, and he is grateful to have such a clear-headed wife to guide him. As he plans for the future, let his considerations help relax you and take you into an evening of soft and peaceful slumber. -----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Lydia and Wickham are married, and the scandalous newlyweds have arrived at Longbourn to visit the Bennet family. The two are as brazen as ever, while Elizabeth and Jane seem to feel more than enough shame for both of them. During one of their conversations, Lydia lets and important detail slip - Mr. Darcy was at their wedding. Elizabeth is astonished, and quickly writes to her aunt Gardiner, knowing that she will be unable to rest until she learns the truth. But fortunately, that isn't a problem for you, as this week's Friday Favorites helps you close your day with lots of restful and restorative sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! It's time to get acquainted with our new protagonists: the Dashwoods. Long settled at Norland Park in Sussex, the family is shaken up by the unexpected death of patriarch Mr. Henry Dashwood, leaving the estate in the hands of his well-to-do son from his first marriage, Mr. John Dashwood. His second wife and their three daughters are left with little. The two eldest daughters, Elinor and Marianne, handle their grief very differently - Elinor, full of sense, keeps her emotions in check, while Marianne, led by sensibility, feels deeply without restraint. With the death of their father, the stage is set for their lives to change dramatically. As their story begins, settle in with our newest novel and let it carry you away from your day and into another night of gentle and restorative sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! After reflecting on the lack of economical thinking that brought him here, Mr. Bennet speedily agrees to the terms that Mr. Gardiner has secured for Lydia and Wickham's marriage. But he is determined to hold strong on one point - they shall not be allowed to enter Longbourn. That is, until Elizabeth and Jane convince him to allow a visit as the newlyweds are on their way to Wickham's new posting in the north. Meanwhile, now that the marriage has taken place, Elizabeth is wishing she hadn't let Mr. Darcy in on the sordid truth, since she is slowly realizing that he may in fact, be the right man for her. Elizabeth is convinced that her realization has come too late, but luckily, it's not too late for you to enjoy our latest Friday Favorites as it helps you into another night of soft and comforting sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Longbourn is aflutter with the arrival of an express from London - Lydia has been found at last! She and Wickham are not yet married, but soon will be, as long as Mr. Bennet agrees to the terms of the agreement that Mr. Gardiner has secured. The cost to the Bennets is much less than they were expecting, leading them to suspect that their dear uncle has paid more money to Wickham than they can ever hope to repay. It's a troubling thought, but at least the Bennet daughters can occupy themselves with handling their mother's renewed energy towards wedding clothes. Securing Wickham and Lydia's marriage may have cost ten thousand pounds, but this week's Friday Favorites is free, so let it accompany you as you relax into a night of deep and restorative sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Fall winds, blowing leaves, bumbling brook. Look, I'm sorry this episode is late. I couldn't figure out what to write in the episode description and while I'm positive no one reads any of this anyway; I still wanted to say something besides “Fall winds; blowing leaves.” Does writer's block apply to ****** writers? That's what I have. ****** writer's block. That it's holding back an ambience episode is annoying. But my usual shtick of pasting tuna casserole recipes into the text field seems lazy. Boil water (or microwave if needed). Cook the pasta from the box until tender. Drain and return to the pot.I could have called back to my New England college days where mountains surrounded my University on all sides in central Vermont (Disney World for the leaf people). Add the packet from the mac & cheese box plus the required butter and milk (or a splash of whatever you've got — even water works in a pinch). Stir until creamy. I had a window that opened directly on one mountain that I'm sure would have looked pretty if I had been awake during the day to look at them.Bluh, does anyone else feel like they could limbo? Dump in the drained tuna. Like my gut tells me i would be good at limbo — even though i know i wouldn't be good at limbo. it's weird, there's an ember of “enter a limbo contest" in my bones. Bake at 350 °F (175 °C) for about 15–20 minutes, until hot and bubbly.

Mr. Bennet and Mr. Gardiner are both in London, doing their best to uncover where Lydia and Wickham may be hiding. No one knows of any of Wickham's friends or relations - all they have been able to uncover is lots and lots of gambling debts. Jane has been holding down the fort, while Mrs. Bennet has confined herself to her room and is convinced that Mr. Bennet and Mr. Wickham will fight in a duel. Meanwhile, Kitty is subdued after the loss of her favorite sister, and Mary offers Elizabeth the balm of sisterly consolation and a reminder about the nature of women's virtue. Elizabeth is grateful to be back at home to support her family, despite the circumstances. There's only been one thing missing from Elizabeth's time in Derbyshire, and that's a letter from Jane, but luckily she's just received two. Unfortunately for her, the letters bear calamitous news - Lydia has run away from Brighton...with Mr. Wickham. What's worse, Mr. Darcy happened to call at the exact time that Elizabeth got the news, and is now privy to the whole scandalous truth. This week's Friday Favorites brings an end to Elizabeth and Darcy's budding friendship (or so Elizabeth believes), so let it also help you bring an end to your day as the comforting story brings you into another night of deep and restorative slumber.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Anne joins Charles and Mary in going to meet the Musgroves, happy to feel the familial warmth from them that she so sorely misses at home. Their hotel is full of hustle and bustle, with guests coming and going, including Captain Wentworth. Anne's wish of conversing with him is cut short by Mary spotting Mrs. Clay and Mr. Elliot together outside, which puzzles Anne, as Mr. Elliot was supposed to be out of town. But the thought is soon replaced by a more pressing one, as Elizabeth invites them all to a party at the Elliot home tomorrow night, and all Anne can think about is whether Captain Wentworth will attend. Anne and Captain Wentworth are finally getting closer once again, and as they do, let them help you get closer to a peaceful night of warm and restful sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! After the visit from Georgiana, Elizabeth and Mrs. Gardiner do the polite thing and return the favor with a visit to Pemberley. There, Elizabeth is reacquainted with Miss Bingley, whose jealousy is on full display. But Elizabeth holds her own against Miss Bingley's jibes, and in the process, endears herself even more to Mr. Darcy. It's unfortunate for Miss Bingley, but jealous people aren't often wise. But listening to this week's Friday Favorites is always a wise decision, so let our latest familiar story help you as you drift away into a night of soft and gentle sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! After reconnecting with Captain Wentworth at the concert, Anne is on cloud nine. But things are about to turn in a very different direction, thanks to some revelations from Anne's old friend Mrs. Smith. You see, Mrs. Smith has heard through the grapevine that Anne and Mr. Elliot are getting close - but once she realizes that Anne has no intention of marrying Mr. Elliot, Mrs. Smith is compelled to reveal the truth about her acquaintance with him. It's a truth so long and sordid that today's story is only the first half of the tale. Pull up your covers and rest your head on your pillow as you let Mrs. Smith's revelations fill your mind and help you into a night of gentle and relaxing slumber.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Elizabeth is back at Longbourn, but peace remains elusive, as Kitty and Lydia are desperate to follow the departing Meryton regiment to Brighton. Luckily for Lydia (and unluckily for Kitty), she receives an invitation as the particular friend of the colonel's wife. Elizabeth knows how badly this could end, and tries her best to convince their father not to permit Lydia to go, to no avail. At least there's one piece of good news out of all of it - the departure of the regiment means that Mr. Wickham is gone, and hopefully, out of their lives forever. As Lydia and the regiment make their way out of town, there's peace and quiet in the house. Let this week's Friday Favorites bring you your own peace and quiet as you settle in for another night of soft and restful sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! It's concert night, and it seems like all of Bath is there to see and be seen. But there's just one person's whose presence matters to Anne: Captain Wentworth. They meet before the concert begins, and Anne immediately senses a change that can only mean one thing. But before their connection can grow deeper once more, Mr. Elliot inserts himself into the conversation with unfortunate results. After a quick stay at the Gardiners, Elizabeth, Jane, and Maria Lucas are on their way back to Hertfordshire. They're met along the way by Kitty and Lydia, who "treat" them to a lunch that's paid for by their older sisters, and then, at long last, they are back at home. For Elizabeth, this means she finally has the chance to unload the burden of her secrets and share the news of Mr. Darcy's proposal and Mr. Wickham's true character with Jane. This week's Friday Favorites is a moment of relief for Elizabeth, one that helps her feel relaxed, and it is a familiar story that will help you relax too, as you drift into a night of gentle and restorative sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Captain Wentworth is in Bath. There's plenty of things going on around Anne, but this is the only thing that matters, and the only one that she can think about. After running into Captain Wentworth at a shop, Anne's mind is full of thoughts of him - When will she see him in Bath? How has he changed since Uppercross and Louisa Musgrove? How will Lady Russell react when she sees him again? Will he be at the upcoming concert evening? Now that Anne and Captain Wentworth are in proximity once more, she can't help but think of him, and as she does, let her thoughts soothe your mind and ease you into a night of restful slumber.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! After six eventful weeks, Elizabeth's time in Kent is coming to an end - but not without a final visit to Rosings. Anne continues to acquaint herself with the ins and outs of daily life and society in Bath, which involves relations both old and new. When the Dowager Viscountess Dalrymple, a distant cousin, arrives in Bath, Anne for once wishes her father and sister had more pride, as they bend over backwards to make her acquaintance. At least she seemingly has a like-minded friend in Mr. Elliot, although Anne still harbors some suspicion about his motives. Nevertheless, he is her pleasantest acquaintance in Bath, and she'll take what she can. Anne is doing her best to make the most of Bath, and as she does, let her efforts help you make the most of your night with deep and restful sleep.-----Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! "Poetry in Times of Reverie" Sunday, July 27, 2025 Poetry is a moment distilled. Sometimes it is life pressed into the pages of a book or, more vividly, as Robert Frost said, it is a way of "taking life by the throat." And Alice Walker said, "Poetry is the lifeblood of rebellion, revolution, and the raising of consciousness." In the deep valley of summer, we will sit with some poetry. Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister; Rev. Laura Shennum, Minister of Congregational Life; Kathleen McClung; Galen Workman, Moderator, Board of Trustees; Reiko Oda Lane, organist; Rami Bar-Niv, pianist; Mark Sumner, songleader Eli Boshears, Camera Operator; Jonathan Silk, Communications Director; Kelvin Jones, Jose Matias Pineda, and Francisco Castellanos, Sextons; Judy Payne, Flowers; Linda Messner, Head Usher
You can hear elements of hip-hop, R&B and even jazz in Tokimonsta's intricate drum loops, synths and bass lines. On her latest album, Eternal Reverie, the Grammy-nominated producer found inspiration in a Brazilian record, and created music tinged with the memories of a close friend. For our series on California composers, Reporter Clare Wiley brings us this profile of Tokimonsta and the devastating setback that almost stole her ability to make music. And we visit Oakland's 100-year-old produce market. Summer is peak season for many of California's fruits and vegetables, but that produce makes a lot of stops on the way to your table. One of those places is the Oakland Produce Market, which supplies small markets, restaurants and other food providers with the freshest foods. You don't have to work for a grocery store or run a restaurant to shop here, as long as you buy in bulk. For her series, California Foodways, Lisa Morehouse got up in the middle of the night to meet some of the people who keep the Oakland Produce Market humming. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about the 2025 Black Mirror episode: Hotel Reverie, for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Hotel Reverie stars Issa Rae, Emma Corrin, and Awkwafina in a bittersweet sapphic story that centers around a sci-fi style high-tech simulation of an old 1940's classic film, “Hotel Reverie”. The premise is that Hollywood A-lister Brandy Friday (Issa Rae) will be playing the lead role of Dr. Alex Palmer (in spite of the original actor being a white man) in the remake; and to do so, she will be sent inside a fully immersive simulation of the film complete with “people” who think they are real, but are they? Of course as soon as Brandy enters the simulation, she begins to fall for Clara, Dr. Palmer's love interest in the original. Initially, Clara sticks to the script, but as the movie progresses, she begins to completely break the plot with her uncontainable gayness. The explanation is that the actor who played Clara, Dorothy Chambers, put so much of herself into the performance that “echoes” of Dorothy exist now in the simulated version of Clara. With the influence of Dorothy's memories and a growing attraction to Brandy, Clara begins to be more and more openly gay and that is actually bad for Brandy– if she doesn't manage to stick the landing and say the final line of the movie, she could be trapped forever in Hotel Reverie. Plus there's that sticky little feature that if Brandy were to be killed in the simulation, she would die in real life. But for all the danger, Brandy cares about only one thing, Clara, their love, and the little simulated life they build while the movie is “frozen”. We talk about the unavoidable comparisons to San Junipero, the many, many glaring plot holes throughout the episode, and the implications of Black Mirror consistently burying their gays and also only allowing gay characters to exist in simulations, video games, computers, etc. Additionally, we discuss the unsatisfying ending and why it didn't feel as resolved or happy as it did for our lesbians in San Junipero. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Hotel Reverie, titled “A Time You Don't Remember”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida.
