In this episode we cover Cal's slimy but successful attempt at getting on a lifeboat, and Mr. Andrews' & Captain Smith's final moments... among other things! Note: The "Approach To the New World" painting by Norman Wilkinson was actually in the first class smoking room on the Olympic! It was featured in A Night To Remember because there was no available print of "Plymouth Harbour" at the time. A full-size reproduction was eventually made, and this is the version we see in James Cameron's Titanic! A bit of a short episode this week, but we hope it suffices! Our next one features another awesome guest! Excited to share it with you all. Southampton City Gallery - Lisa Traxler - Time Traveller In 2020 Lisa Traxler was awarded first place in Southampton City Art Gallery's Open Exhibition with her sculpture, ‘Time Traveller – Voyager' which was inspired by a painting from Southampton's Maritime and Local History Collection ‘Approach to the New World (Olympic)' by artist Norman Wilkinson. Taking her winning entry as a reference point, history and architecture collide in this exhibition to create an immersive landscape within the gallery setting. Alongside dazzle artworks the artist has created a new series of sculptures transforming and dissecting previous works.

Revisiting the Rite: The Rite of Spring Centenary Conference
For a few nights in March 1914 if contemplating buying a theatre ticket in London, there was a brief chance when one could have seen Nijinsky dance at the Palace Theatre one night and the next the new Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Savoy Theatre. Had one had the rare chance to view the 1913 London performance of the Sacre and then the Savoy Dream eight months later, one might well have been struck by the mutuality of Harley Granville Barker’s and Sergei Diaghilev’s strategies as much as their distinctness. The ethos and practices of these two productions striving to achieve a ‘total work of art’ resonate and contrast with each other in the principles of collaboration in the two companies: the deployment of intensified simplification in performance to achieve the ‘gesamtkunstwerk’; the use of colour and supra-temporal effects to create stage decoration rather than pictorialism; the destabilization of gender and the imagining of the primitive was at the heart of both scenarios. This paper will recuperate the creative collaboration at the centre of the Savoy Dream, examining the neglected surviving design sketches of Norman Wilkinson as well as the interpretative contribution of Barker’s wife, Lilah McCarthy, to explore the continuities and ruptures between these rites of spring and midsummer.

World War I was a war of production and supply: whoever could feed their populations and soldiers, make the most weapons, and marshal the most resources would win the war. Surrounded by enemies on land, and desperate to break the trans-Atlantic trade and supply lines of the Allied Powers, Germany used submarines during the war to hunt down and destroy Allied vessels. With this German U-Boat campaign threatening Allied supplies and production capabilities, it soon became obvious that something had to be done to counter the U-Boat threat or the Allies would lose the war. One of the tactics adopted was the use of “dazzle painting” – a jarring, brightly colored paint scheme for ships. Recognizing that it was impossible to make a ship invisible, Norman Wilkinson, the father of dazzle painting, decided to use bright and contrasting colors in geometric patterns to distort the size, speed, and shape of a ship. While the ultimate success of dazzle painting was much debated after the war, it remains an interesting chapter in the history of World War I.
