In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with percussionist Chris DeChiara, whose musical journey spans from teenage rock bands to drum corps, classical training, and ultimately, more than two decades with the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C. I first discovered Chris after hearing him on a Classical Breakdown episode, and I was blown away by his playing, his sound, and the way he talked about percussion. I reached out immediately, and I'm so glad he agreed to come on the show.Chris and I discuss how he found his way into classical music later than most, and how that discovery completely altered the direction of his life. We explore how drum corps shaped his sense of time and listening, as well as the pressure of performing high-level percussion parts night after night. He recounts the story of joining the Navy Band just before 9/11, and we discuss the weight and responsibility of performing military funerals and ceremonial duties at Arlington.We also delve into his book on Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, which originated from a graduate school paper and evolved into a comprehensive research project during the pandemic. Hearing how he approached the timpani part, the historical context, and the self-publishing process was fascinating. From there, we discuss what it truly takes to balance drum set and orchestral percussion, the challenge of leading time within a large ensemble, and the mindset shift required to blend, anticipate, and adapt depending on one's position on stage.Chris and I share a love of the Beatles, so of course, we dive into why those songs are so deceptively complex. Chris also fills me in on what his life looks like now: performing with the Alexandria Symphony, gigging with his long-running band Dr. Fu, playing in tribute acts (including an Iron Maiden tribute), teaching at Catholic University, and tackling a Britney Spears musical mainly played on a sample pad.This is a rich and wide-ranging conversation filled with great stories, thoughtful musical insight, and an inside look at a fascinating career in percussion. Notre société a dévalorisé l'image des agents économiques primaires : ingénieurs, ouvriers, paysans. Elle les a appauvris. Cela découle du mirage de la « société de services », des délocalisations et de l'accaparement du bénéfice des entreprises qu'on appelle « création de valeur pour l'actionnaire ». Une économie de rente s'est développée sans création de richesse réelle, au profit de la technostructure qui, de surcroît, multiplie les normes pour entretenir un semblant d'activité économique. Or cette économie des normes, des jobs et des produits inutiles est entrée dans une crise durable. C'est l'une des causes de la faible croissance des économies européennes et du recours à la dette publique. Il s'ensuit une perte d'autonomie et de souveraineté des nations occidentales. Ce sont les dirigeants qui ont désindustrialisé la France, réduit l'autonomie agricole du pays, appauvri les producteurs. Ce n'est pas une loi de nature. Ce que l'homme a fait, l'homme peut le défaire. Une action politique est donc possible, par la redéfinition du périmètre d'action et des modes de fonctionnement de l'État, redevenu à la fois minimal et stratège. V soboto, 22. novembra, bo v Sloveniji nastopil eden največjih sodobnih kitaristov, Al Di Meola.  Di Meola je svojo glasbeno kariero začel v kultni zasedbi Return to Forever s Chickom Coreo, Stanleyjem Clarkom in Lennyjem Whitom. Pridružil se ji je pri rosnih devetnajstih in z njo igral med letoma 1974 in 1976. Pozneje so sodelovali še v letih 1983 in 2008, vmes pa je pisal zgodovino še s slavnim akustičnim kitarskim triem skupaj z virtuozoma Johnom McLaughlinom in Pacom de Lucío ter triem Rite of Strings, v katerem sta igrala še basist Stanley Clark in violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. Bogata kariera mu je prinesla priznanja kritikov, štiri zlate in dva platinasta albuma ter več kot šest milijonov prodanih plošč, številne nominacije in nagrade grammy, med drugim pa tudi častni doktorat univerze Berklee in nagrado BBC za življenjsko delo. Revija Guitar Player Magazine ga je uvrstila v svojo prestižno Galerijo velikih. Al Di Meola v Cankarjevem domu nastopa s svojim akustičnim triem.

Stāsta Velosipēdu vēstures pētnieks, Saulkrastu Velosipēdu muzeja līdzizveidotājs Eduards Seregins 19. gadsimta 80. gadu sākumā pasauli bija pārņēmis velosipēdu popularitātes bums. Visā Eiropā tika dibinātas riteņbraucēju biedrības, kurās apvienojās jauni ļaudis, kuriem piederēja tā laika modernākais brīvā laika pavadīšanas rīks – velosipēds. Pirmie riteņbraukšanas entuziasti ar saviem divriteņiem devās ceļojumos, sāka rīkot sacensības un izbraucienus pa pilsētu ielām. Arī Rīgā jau varēja nopirkt Eiropā pazīstamos angļu, franču un vācu dažādu sistēmu un konstrukciju divriteņus un trīsriteņus, taču tie bija samērā dārgi, tādēļ velosipēdi bija pa kabatai galvenokārt turīgiem ļaudīm. 19. gadsimta 80. gados modē bija tā sauktie augstrata velosipēdi ar milzīgu priekšējo ratu un mazu atbalsta riteni aizmugurē. Šādus divriteņa braucamos lietoja ne vien izklaidēm un ceļojumiem, bet arī sporta sacīkstēm, kuras kļuva arvien populārākas. Arī Rīgā 1886. gada 12. augustā tika nodibināts "Rīgas Riteņbraucēju klubs", kurā iestājās pirmie 14 velosipēdu īpašnieki. Šo velosipēdu popularitātes pieaugumu un ražošanas iespējas novērtēja arī 21 gadus jaunais rīdzinieks, mehāniķis un arī viens no pirmajiem Rīgas riteņbraucējiem Aleksandrs Leitners. Aleksandrs bija dzimis 1864. gadā Rīgas sīkpilsoņa ģimenē. Pēc reālskolas beigšanas viņš bija devies strādāt uz lielākajām Anglijas un Francijas velosipēdu būves fabrikām, lai apgūtu velosipēdu būves iemaņas. Atgriezies Rīgā, 1886. gada 10. septembrī Aleksandrs īstenoja savu ieceri – par iekrāto naudu nopirka darbgaldus un vienstāva koka ēkā Ģertrūdes ielā 27 atvēra "Leitnera velosipēdu darbnīcu". Tā bija pirmā velosipēdu ražotne cariskajā Krievijā, kuras sastāvā tolaik bija arī Latvijas teritorija. Uzņēmums nodarbināja 4 strādniekus, kuri tikai ar roku darbu pirmajā gadā izgatavoja 19 augstrata velosipēdus – izmantojot kā paraugus tā laika modernāko angļu divriteņu modeļus. Ar šādas konstrukcijas velosipēdiem sākās ražošana mūsu zemē. Drīz vien Aleksandrs Leitners saprata, ka augstrata velosipēdu laiks ir pagājis. 19. gadsimta 80. gadu beigās pasaulē strauji sāka ienākt modē tā sauktie drošie velosipēdi – divriteņi ar ķēdes pārvadu uz pakaļējo riteni un vienāda lieluma ratiem. Pārdošanā parādījās arī pirmie velosipēdi ar pneimatiskajām riepām. Tādēļ Leitnera fabrikas vajadzībām tika uzcelta jauna divstāvu ēka Suvorova ielā 21 (tagadējā Krišjāņa Barona ielā), kur jau 1890. gadā tika uzsākta moderno "drošo" velosipēdu būvniecība. Jaunā fabrikas produkcija ātri ieguva milzīgu pieprasījumu. Vairākās pašmāju un ārzemju izstādēs tika iegūtas nozīmīgas balvas un augsta atzinība. Fabrikas ēka drīz vien kļuva par mazu, lai nodrošinātu milzīgo pieprasījumu pēc Leitnera velosipēdiem, kuri tika ražoti ar marku "Russia". Tādēļ jau 1894. gadā tika uzsākta jaunās fabrikas būvniecība Aleksandra ielā (tagad Brīvības ielā), kurā 1895. gadā tika atvērta lielākā velosipēdu ražotne Krievijas impērijā. Līdz Pirmā pasaules kara sākumam, kad fabrika pārtrauca savu darbu Rīgā, uzņēmums bija izaudzis par modernāko velosipēdu ražotāju Austrumeiropā. Fabrika ik gadus izgatavoja 8000 velosipēdu un nodarbināja vairāk kā 350 strādnieku. Uzņēmums  ražoja 16 modeļu, dažādu konstrukciju un sistēmu velosipēdus. Tas bija arī viens no lielākajiem rūpniecības uzņēmumiem Rīgā.

The Rite of Holy Matrimony in Lutheran Service Book begins with a pastoral address that lays out the goodness and purposes of God's gift of marriage. Scripture readings and music center the service as worship in the name of the Triune God, whose blessing the husband and wife seek. As the man and the woman make promises to each other, God is the One who joins them together. The congregation offers prayers for the particular couple and all husbands and wives in confidence that God hears and answers according to His promise.  Rev. I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is one of the most exciting young painters working today, Eva Helene Pade. Born in Denmark in 1997, and based in Paris – where we are recording today – Pade is known for her rich and emotionally-charged, large-scale canvases populated with figures that morph in and out of abstraction. Often set in a dreamworld that can feel akin to being lost in a dance or state of unconsciousness, with fiery blazes and dark intense shadows, Pade's paintings exist in places beyond the realm of our world. They are full of ambiguity: as a viewer, you are unaware of whether they are in day or night, heaven or hell, if the figures are male or female, or set in an ancient world or contemporary life. Stylistically, Pade seems to borrow from a lineage of Northern European figurative artists, from Edvard Munch to Otto Dix, creating work akin surrealism or expressionism: artistic movements born out of a time of political tumult, yet exude freedom and liberation in their subject and handling of paint. This creates an interesting conversation about the state of the world vs then, and now. But she also goes further, imbuing her work with ancient stories and figures – such as Eve or maybe Ophelia – and stories, such as Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, a ballet she was inspired by after seeing a performance choreographed by Pina Bausch, the influential German dancer.
