Japanese true crime and Japanese folklore, one candle at a time.In June 1981, a Japanese literature student in Paris asked a Dutch classmate to come to his apartment and help him with his German pronunciation. Renée Hartevelt was twenty-five. She said yes because she was the kind of person who noticed when somebody was sitting on their own.Issei Sagawa confessed within days. He was never convicted, never imprisoned, and never spent a single night in a cell. He spent the next thirty-six years being interviewed, published, booked and paid — and at one point, employed as a restaurant critic. This episode pairs his case with the jikininki: the Buddhist hungry ghost, cursed to devour the dead every night through a throat too narrow to swallow anything at all. A creature no court can touch, no prison can hold, and no executioner can reach — one that ends only when somebody finally decides to stop feeding it.Two stories about an appetite that was never the crime. It was the sentence.⸻Contains: graphic violence, cannibalism, sexual violence (referenced, not depicted), and detailed discussion of a real victim. What makes a brand worth betting on? Ken Sadowsky, affectionately known as "The Beverage Whisperer," returns to Taste Radio with a sharp look at where the biggest opportunities — and potential pitfalls — are emerging across the beverage category.  A senior advisor at Verlinvest, board director at Vita Coco and Icelandic Glacial, and early-stage investor in several emerging beverage brands, Ken explains why coconut water still has plenty of runway, what founders can learn from playing the long game, and why he believes colostrum could represent the next big functional beverage opportunity. Ken also shares his perspective on the rise of caffeine-free energy, hydration, matcha, protein and functional beverages. He also offers candid takes on celebrity-backed brands, flavor versus function, packaging, category positioning and the question he asks when evaluating any new beverage. Show notes: 0:20: Ken Sadowsky, Sr. Advisor, Verlinvest – Ken kicks things off by praising his beloved Red Sox before sharing his perspective on why coconut water has quietly become one of beverage's fastest-growing categories. He explains how strategic decisions by major beverage companies can temporarily shape retailer perceptions of an entire category, and why occasion- and benefit-based shopping may increasingly blur traditional category lines, particularly in smaller-format stores. Ken also discusses several emerging brands in his investment portfolio, including Rite, a caffeine-free energy drink powered by ketones and paraxanthine, and Leisure Hydration, which he sees as a function-first product with a more relaxed approach to hydration. He and Ray also evaluate products from Stillers, Yass, Gimber, Fizzin Protein and Grind. At the heart of Ken's philosophy is a simple question: Why will a consumer buy the product again? While functional benefits can drive trial, he argues that taste remains critical to repeat purchase in most categories. For founders, he emphasizes the importance of spending time in stores, studying the competitive set and allowing consumers to determine where a product belongs rather than relying too heavily on conventional category definitions. Ken also weighs in on celebrity-backed brands, arguing that celebrity involvement can drive discovery but is far more powerful when the celebrity genuinely invests in and believes in the business. He reflects on the extraordinary velocity of beverages compared with other CPG categories and explains why he often asks if a brand has the potential to sell a billion cans. Brands in this episode: Vita Coco, Harmless Harvest, Zico, Gatorade, Red Bull, Monster Energy, Celsius, Rite Energy, Parch, Subourbon Life, Ponyboy Slings, MOTH Cocktails, Spikedade, Super Lyte, Yass, Orange Toucan, Leisure Hydration, Spindrift, Coca-Cola, Neau Water, Eatyx, Oshee, Stiller's, Gimber, Vitaminwater, Pirate's Booty, AriZona Beverages, Ancient Nutrition, Fair Life, Fizzen Protein, Protein Pop, Grind, Onyx Coffee, Donpon Energy

Meet the Woodwind Family We're kicking off a brand-new series on the podcast, and I could not be more excited about it. Over the next few episodes, we're getting to know all four families of the orchestra — strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. (We already spent time with the strings a while back, if you want to catch up first.) Today it's the woodwinds' turn. I think this family has some of the most colorful, personality-packed voices in the whole orchestra. In this episode, your kids will learn: What actually makes an instrument a "woodwind" (hint: it's not about being made of wood) The two ways woodwinds turn breath into sound — blowing across an opening vs. using a reed Why the saxophone is technically a woodwind, even though it's shiny metal How to tell the flute, piccolo, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon apart by ear We use Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf as our guide, since he gave some of the best character roles to woodwind instruments — the bird (flute), the duck (oboe), the cat (clarinet), and the grandfather (bassoon). If your family has listened to our episode on Peter and the Wolf before (Episode 122), this one will feel like meeting old friends again. Free Printable: The Woodwind Family Spotter Download it below and use it while you listen — there's a spot to check off each instrument as you hear it. It's a simple way to keep kids actively engaged instead of just having the podcast on in the background (though honestly, that's fine too — no judgment here).

Losing Ourselves In The AI Mirror

The Gentle Rebel Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2026 22:13

What do people who believe they are writing songs when they use Suno AI, YouTuber Hank Green, and Narcissus from Greek mythology all have in common? Quite a lot, it turns out. And they can help us recognise a form of stuckness that’s becoming increasingly common as people’s relationship with generative AI begins to blur the boundary between ourselves and the technologies we use, making it more difficult to know where the human ends and the machine begins. https://youtu.be/zSMwN0wKGlE Getting Stuck in the Digital Image Our relationship with technology and, in particular, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Suno poses a really interesting existential dilemma. I’ve been fascinated to see how these are often sold as tools to overcome stuckness. While at the same time, they create a whole different form of stuckness when we become attached to them. The demise of Narcissus came through an obsession with his own reflection. Perhaps the price of looking away from his reflection brought its own kind of departure and death. Maybe the image had become more real, perfect, and desirable than the human staring at it. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, we consider how the reflection of ourselves in the machines we use can bend us out of shape and leave us uncertain of who we are and what we’re capable of. What Does It Mean to Write a Song? Fil Henley, AKA Wings of Pegasus, asked this simple question in a recent video. He analysed an advert from the AI music generation platform Suno, which features producers and songwriters using it to make songs. Fil says, “If you don’t know what the song is going to sound like before you hear it, then you haven’t written the song.” Platforms like Suno act like fruit machines. The output is based more on luck than judgement. What makes them compelling and perhaps even addictive, is that the result is impossible for us to predict. It’s a surprise each time that feels exciting to reveal. And it can turn any old crap into something you might hear on the radio. As we see in the video. More Than a Tool This is what makes these services different from tools. A tool reliably enables us to carry out a task without doing everything and more autonomously. So when the producer says that Suno is showing him stuff he never would have thought about, he is revealing the blurred boundary between us and these machines. It is more than a tool for songwriting. It’s generating the song itself. Suno isn’t like a digital audio workstation (a tool), where a songwriter records, edits, and produces music they have written and performed. It goes further, making many of the creative decisions that normally require time, judgement, and consideration throughout the songwriting process. In other words, the user doesn’t need the skill required to produce the result. Whose Ideas Are They? So if YOU didn’t think of them, whose ideas are they? And if it’s outputting stuff based on something you haven’t thought of, what’s the point in you being there at all? The song is found in the mirror as generative AI reflects back an image of a reality that doesn't exist above the surface. Creative Block as a Rite of Passage In reality, human creativity emerges through the energy generated by those moments of friction, uncertainty, and obstacle. By intervening early with generative AI before we have taken the opportunity to grapple with a block, we deprive ourselves of that bittersweet joy of finding something that comes to life THROUGH US. Instead, a service like Suno short-circuits the block. It presents fully formed solutions that we “never would have thought about”. Perhaps, we would have thought of something much better and more “us” if we had been patient and given ourselves time to grapple with the block. The Allure of The Mirror When you listen to these outputs, there is a professional sheen to them that feels sharp. It sounds just like stuff you hear on the radio. But it sounds like stuff you hear on the radio. There is a sameness to it. An increasingly homogenous stasis. Maybe this technology is attractive precisely because it DOESN’T sound like us. It’s familiar enough for us to to glimpse ourselves. But we look different. It cleans up the parts we might cringe at and be afraid of revealing. Those bits that feel messy, broken, chaotic, and weird. We don’t argue with the machine that makes us sound like something you’d hear on the radio, see on TV, or LinkedIn. Slick, clean, authoritative, clinical, soulless, indistinguishable, unremarkable, dull. Incidentally, this is a good way to identify the best producers, editors, and coaches to work with. They don’t try to make us sound like them or force us to emulate their processes. Instead, they seek to understand and support us. They are able to help us notice, accept, and amplify those parts that we would try to shrink down and hide when left to our own devices. The machine holds a mirror with some perfected image that we believe is us, but is stripped of blemishes, stains, and imperfections. But rather than being the Platonic ideal version of us, it’s more like an aggregate approximation of who everyone else is in the land of mediocre homogeneity. We arrive in this territory when we sand off our edges and lose our spark. The Culture of Narcissism In his 1979 book The Culture of Narcissism, Christopher Lasch offers a fresh way of thinking about the myth of Narcissus. We tend to think that Narcissus died because he fell in love with his own reflection and couldn’t look away, so was unable to do anything other than stare obsessively at himself in the water. Lasch adds another layer, depicting cultural narcissism emerging as the image of the human in the water becomes more important than the human it reflects. Telling Us Apart YouTuber Hank Green recently revealed that he had become over-reliant on ChatGPT after viewers pointed out something in a video that felt off to them. When viewed in context, the clip actually makes more sense than the reactionary commentary suggested. But while he said he didn’t accidentally read something from ChatGPT left in the script, Green didn’t dismiss the criticism. Instead, he agreed, “I think what people have said in this thread about me diluting myself is spot on”. Diluting oneself through the use of technology indicates how a separation between the image and the self can get blurred. This is perhaps why those using Suno to make songs believe they themselves are writing songs. It’s not necessarily a deliberate deception being perpetrated by people pretending to know more than they do or pretending they’ve done things they haven’t. There is a real belief being seeded and nurtured that means people genuinely struggle to distinguish between themselves and the output generated by these technologies. The Gift of Getting Stuck There is a gift in getting stuck along the way during the creative process. It invites us to be resourceful problem solvers. It builds character and reveals more about who we are as we experiment, test, and try things without guaranteed results. Imperfectly. Clumsily. Grappling with creative friction gives opportunities to deepen our confidence and grow our experiences of being okay after failing. These tools are sold to us as ways to avoid that friction. But in so doing, we avoid strengthening the tension wood of creativity altogether, grown in a dance with the rhythm of life’s winds and storms. It Takes a Village (of Humans) In this Sunotopia, depicted through their advert, we see many people gathered in the studio. Yet, the future reality that will come through the success of these platforms appears to be very different. The technology is moving us away from others so we don’t need a producer, an engineer, or other musicians to work with. All we need is Suno because Suno doesn’t get blocked. It will work with whatever crap you feed it. And it will turn any old noise into the kind of song you might hear on the radio. Happiness is Only Real When… Christopher McCandless’s diary concluded that “happiness is only real when shared”. An observation made under tragic circumstances. I think there is a lot of truth in this. I’ve found many times that even the happiest experiences I’ve had on my own feel more complete when they are witnessed through sharing a story with someone else. When we’re feeling the pressure to conform to the schedule of our unrelenting world, we need the courage to give it time. To give OURSELVES and ONE ANOTHER time. Maybe our intuition and imagination will start to show us stuff an LLM never would have thought of… It is rebellious to release ourselves from the pressure to rush and force output for the sake of it. Technologies like Suno and ChatGPT can become an attractive crutch when they are sold as ways to keep going amidst the limitless demands of a productivity-obsessed world. But they gradually erode confidence in our own creative capacity. We would do well to remember, “it is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society”. This is where we become unstuck (in the best possible way).

Ever thought of hitting the road in a retrofitted van? Victoria Lee Starr did it in midlife and found her true self. She became a guide for women through the sacred season of midlife reinvention, helping them reclaim self-trust, inner safety and their authentic power. Using transformational breathwork, guided microdosing support, somatic ritual and emotional excavation, her work meets women in the places most avoid... the unraveling, the burning, the falling apart...and transforms those moments into a becoming.Victoria's own awakening began in Costa Rica, when everything she thought she needed to feel loved, safe or worthy started to collapse. What looked like failure was actually her Rite of Passage into self-trust, honesty and the woman you become when you stop abandoning yourself. After leaving an emotionally abusive relationship, Victoria rebuilt her life from the ground up and spent nearly four years living full-time in her Ram Promaster van with her dog, Olivia Grace. Her van became her initiation chamber, a sacred space to learn to trust her body, intuition, truth and the quiet voice that had been waiting decades to lead.Victoria works through psychological wisdom, nervous system healing, transformational breathwork, guided microdosing, intuitive channeling, somatic rituals and emotional excavation. She helps women fully be themselves in midlife, showing them that falling apart is often the beginning of becoming. She calls herself a "spiritual outlaw" because she refuses to heal or lead within the confines of traditional systems, surface-level fixes or fluff. "This work is not about bypassing the hard stuff, it's about entering the sacred, messy, untamed places where real healing lives," Victoria says. "I walk between realms of emotional, spiritual, somatic and psychological and I'm not here to guide women to think their way into peace. I guide you to feel, to embody and to remember. A spiritual outlaw breaks the rules of what healing is 'supposed to' look like; doesn't fix you — she walks with you as you unlearn the lies and reclaim your soul; channels deep wisdom that comes from lived experience, intuition and higher intelligence — not just certifications; uses non-linear tools like breathwork, somatic ritual and emotional excavation to guide people back to their power; refuses spiritual bypassing and meets you in the root of it — trauma, lineage, nervous system patterns — and helps transmute them into gold; and is wildly intuitive, slightly rebellious, deeply grounded and divinely guided."In this episode, we talk about:--Midlife as a Rite of Passage--Why women in their 40s, 50s and 60s are unraveling and why this is actually the beginning of their becoming.--Being a Spiritual Outlaw--The future of healing beyond fluffy positivity and patriarchal conditioning--Breathwork + Microdosing using natural, non-addictive medicine for Emotional Reinvention--A grounded, embodied approach for women ready to reclaim self-trust and inner safety.--Living on the Road After Burning Down Your Life--Lessons from four years of nomadic living about freedom, intuition and rebuilding identity.--Rebirth After Divorce, Abuse and Identity Collapse--How to trust yourself again when everything familiar has fallen away. She offers free resources:Her Guided Meditation Collection consists of short, soul-nourishing meditations for midlife transformation:https://www.victorialeestarr.com/free-meditationBreathe with Intention: Your ToolkitPractical breathwork exercises to reclaim calm, clarity and self-trust:https://www.victorialeestarr.com/free-breathe-toolkitHot Flashes BreathworkA focused practice for navigating menopause with embodiment and empowerment:https://www.victorialeestarr.com/hotflashesLearn more:Website: https://www.victorialeestarr.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/victorialeestarr/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/victorialeestarrLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/victoria-starr-68495a280/

We asked for your questions, and you sent so many that one episode couldn't hold them. This is part one of two — and part one is brought to you by two letters: A and I. That wasn't the plan; it's just where the mailbag pointed. Philip Rothman and David MacDonald take on the growing expectation that artificial intelligence should be able to turn a scan, recording, or generated track into finished, usable sheet music. Why is that still so difficult? And where can AI genuinely help musicians and music preparation professionals today? The discussion ranges from optical music recognition and audio transcription to proofreading, house styles, sample libraries, score following, and the potential for language models to communicate directly with notation software. Along the way, Philip proposes the “Gould test” as the music preparation equivalent of the Turing test. Underneath it all are larger questions about the value of expertise, the role of human judgment, and where responsibility lies when the technology gets it wrong. The rest of the mailbag — the questions that have nothing to do with AI — is coming next month. It's also longer than usual but every perfume we tried was a hit and our favorite was probably the last. Or, maybe it was the first because we finally added a bottle we've been talking about for months. Regardless, every one was a winner, even during The GameSpecial Request - What are your favorite goth and spooky perfumes? Got a teenage son coming of age? Check out Genesis - a Rite of Passage by Rise Up Kings - the program where Ned coaches dads and teen sons. Go to: riseupkings.com/ffn---------What if becoming a better father has less to do with learning more parenting techniques and more to do with becoming a man who is fully alive?Zac Ernst is a husband of 22 years, father of two teenagers, entrepreneur, co-founder of ActivityPay, and founder of Pursuit, a men's movement helping men come fully alive through community, fitness, spiritual formation, and adventure. Living in Seal Beach, California, Zac has built his life around one central conviction: the greatest adventure isn't paddling to Catalina or riding bicycles down the California coast—it's becoming the husband and father God created you to be.In this conversation, Ned sits down with Zac Ernst to explore what it looks like to intentionally pursue God, your wife, your children, and your own formation as a man. From the opening minutes discussing dreams and how God still speaks today, the conversation quickly moves into entrepreneurship, margin, fatherhood, adventure, raising teenagers, discipling children, and the loneliness epidemic facing modern men.Zac shares how building businesses wasn't primarily about money—it was about creating enough freedom to be present at every game, school event, and important moment in his children's lives. He explains the family values acronym “GraceFi,” why adventure slows time down with kids, and why fathers should become students of their children's hearts instead of trying to make them into younger versions of themselves. One of the most powerful moments comes when Zac explains the transition every Christian parent eventually faces: moving from telling children about Jesus to revealing Jesus through a life of answered prayer, faithful obedience, and authentic dependence on God.The conversation concludes with Zac sharing the heart behind Pursuit—a nationwide movement helping men fight isolation through community, physical challenge, spiritual growth, and honest relationships. This episode is packed with practical wisdom for fathers who want to raise resilient kids, build intentional families, and become the kind of men whose lives point people toward Jesus.5 Questions This Episode AnswersHow do fathers build deeper relationships with teenage children? How do I help my kids develop their own faith instead of simply borrowing mine? What should fathers do when their kids don't enjoy the same interests they do?How can entrepreneurship create more freedom for family life? How do Christian men build authentic friendships with other men?---------Check out Zac's Christian men's fitness and fellowship program Pursuit:www.joinpursuit.coJoin a nationwide 90-Day Challenge with Pursuit in August 2026 - or anytime!Pursuit 90 Day Challenge---------The Dream Journal App---------Check Out the Program Talked About: Genesis by Rise Up KingsThis episode is sponsored by Genesis - a Rite of Passage by Rise Up KingsOrder The Adventure of Fatherhood children's book hereCheck out the TEDx----------Want to learn more about The Adventure of Fatherhood?www.adventureoffatherhood.comwww.rebelandcreate.comEach week Ned sits down with a dad and asks him to open up his field notes and share with other men who find themselves on the Adventure of Fatherhood. Classical music is sometimes seen as serious, formal, and maybe even a little intimidating. But is that image fair? YolanDa is joined by London Philharmonic Orchestra violinist Alice and trombonist Tempo to uncover what really goes on behind the scenes of an orchestra.Pirates, karaoke, beer cans, and a trombone-playing wedding guest aren't usually associated with classical music. But according to YolanDa, Alice, and Tempo, they're all part of the surprisingly un-stuffy world of orchestral life. Together, they explore why classical music is sometimes seen as formal and intimidating, and whether that reputation still holds up today. Along the way, they reveal the hidden culture of the orchestra: from inside jokes and rehearsal pranks to foot-tapping applause, improvisation, and even Rite of Spring raves. They also tackle some big questions: are classical musicians really all that different from athletes? Does concert dress make orchestras seem more exclusive than they are? And can a genre built on centuries-old music still be spontaneous and adventurous?#PitchMeClassicalInstagram: @londonphilharmonicorchestra TikTok: @lporchestraBluesky: @lporchestraFacebook: @londonphilharmonicorchestra YouTube: @londonphilharmonicorchestra Hosted on Acast. William Brinker is an entrepreneur, husband, father of three, and business leader connected to The Landfill Group and Enerdyne Power Systems, companies working in the landfill gas-to-energy space. In this conversation, William shares how his family history, entrepreneurial upbringing, faith journey, marriage, fatherhood, and stewardship of land have shaped the way he thinks about legacy. He also talks about his work turning landfill methane into usable energy, his outdoor hospitality businesses, and the deeper realization that the things he once chased were never as valuable as the family, faith, and relationships he already had. This episode is a rich conversation about fatherhood, family legacy, marriage, entrepreneurship, faith, and the importance of stewarding what has been entrusted to you. Ned and William begin with the normal aches and humility of being in their early forties, but the conversation quickly turns toward deeper themes: choosing your wife daily, learning to control emotional hijacks, setting expectations for children, and leading from faith rather than finance.William tells the story of growing up as one of six kids in a tight-knit family where resources were limited but work ethic, discipline, faith, and family connection were strong. That upbringing shaped him into an entrepreneur who now helps lead multiple businesses, including The Landfill Group and Enerdyne Power Systems, where landfill gas is captured and used as an energy source. The heart of the episode centers on legacy. William describes his family farm in North Carolina, protected through a conservation trust so that future generations can continue to use it, hunt it, walk it, and carry the family story forward. Ned reflects on the power of having a “homeland” and a shared place where family memories are rooted. The conversation becomes a vision-casting moment for fathers: don't just think about getting your kids to 18; think about what kind of family culture, land, story, faith, and relationships might exist when your children are 42.5 Questions This Episode AnswersHow can fathers build a family legacy that lasts beyond one generation? What does it look like to teach kids stewardship, work ethic, and financial wisdom without spoiling them? How can a man reprioritize faith, family, fitness, and finance when he realizes his life is out of order? Why does land, place, or a “family homeland” matter in building family identity? How can fathers lead their kids spiritually without forcing faith in a way that feels hollow or performative?---------Check Out the Program Talked About: Genesis by Rise Up KingsThis episode is sponsored by Genesis - a Rite of Passage by Rise Up KingsOrder The Adventure of Fatherhood children's book hereCheck out the TEDx----------Want to learn more about The Adventure of Fatherhood?www.adventureoffatherhood.comwww.rebelandcreate.comEach week Ned sits down with a dad and asks him to open up his field notes and share with other men who find themselves on the Adventure of Fatherhood. For nearly a decade, Mike Foster has been helping people become stronger physically, mentally, and spiritually. As the owner of CrossFit 1776 in Loomis, California, and founder of the Resolute Life Foundation, Mike's mission is bigger than fitness—it's about freedom. But before CrossFit became his ministry, Mike was fighting a different battle.Alcohol had become his coping mechanism. He was physically present for his son, but mentally absent. Everything changed ten years ago when sobriety forced him to confront the man he had become—and challenged him to become the father his children deserved. In this deeply authentic conversation, Mike and Ned discuss addiction, recovery, CrossFit, parenting teenagers, raising resilient kids, and the life-changing difference between simply being around your children and truly being present with them. Mike shares how sobriety transformed every area of his life, including one unforgettable moment when he realized his son wasn't upset about losing a video game—he was carrying wounds that needed a father who could finally slow down long enough to listen. The conversation explores:Why freedom—not fitness—is the real mission behind CrossFit 1776.How suffering builds connection between fathers and children. The hidden cost of coping mechanisms. Why reacting less helps fathers hear more.Raising teenagers through trust instead of control. What it means to become the kind of man your daughter hopes to marry.Breaking generational patterns while honoring your parents. How physical training develops emotional resilience. Why showing up mentally matters more than simply showing up physically. Mike also shares one of the most practical parenting ideas of the episode: instead of confronting his teenage son immediately after discovering drug use, he took him on a two-and-a-half-mile run before talking. The shared suffering opened a conversation that punishment alone never could have accomplished. Whether you're battling addiction, trying to become more present with your family, raising teenagers, or simply wondering how to lead your children through life's hardest moments, this episode offers hope, wisdom, and practical fatherhood.

Few books change how you see yourself.Even fewer change how you see every relationship in your life.In this conversation, psychologist, speaker, and bestselling author Dr. Kelly Flanagan returns to Fatherhood Field Notes to unpack the central ideas from his newest book, The Road Less Triggered—a practical roadmap for transforming the moments that usually create conflict into opportunities for deeper connection.Ned begins with an honest confession. Minutes before recording, Kelly was a few minutes late logging into the call. Almost instantly, Ned noticed an old story awaken inside him—the familiar fear that he wasn't important enough, that someone else mattered more. Instead of brushing it aside, they use that real-time moment to explore one of the biggest challenges every husband, father, and leader faces: being triggered.Together they explore why our nervous systems react before our minds do, why our hearts instinctively close to protect us, and why emotional triggers are not signs of weakness—but invitations for growth. Kelly explains that our past isn't behind us; it's carried within us, and understanding that reality changes the way we approach marriage, parenting, friendship, leadership, and even our relationship with God.The conversation moves into practical territory as they discuss the hidden ways men try to control relationships, why boundaries are often misunderstood, and how true strength isn't found in managing people but in cultivating an open heart that remains present even when life feels unsafe. For fathers, this episode becomes a masterclass in emotional leadership. Kelly explains why the best father to your twelve-year-old is the healed twelve-year-old within yourself, why children don't need perfect parents, and why a father's greatest influence isn't found in having the right answers but in the quality of his presence. This isn't simply a conversation about psychology. It's a conversation about discipleship.About marriage.About parenting.About becoming the kind of man whose calm presence creates safety for everyone around him.If you've ever wondered why you react the way you do—or how to stop repeating the same conflicts with your spouse, children, or coworkers—this may become one of the most transformative episodes you've ever heard.

"Survival mode leadership is reactive. It's not intentional. Decisions are made through urgency, scarcity, and fear of failure instead of bringing together the mission, the values, and the people around you." High-risk pregnancy physician specialist, Air Force veteran, and author Dr. Luissa Kiprono joins host Josh Seldin to explore what it truly means to lead beyond survival mode. Dr. Kiprono draws on her incredible journey—from surviving communist Romania to overcoming personal trauma—to dissect the underlying neuroscience of how fear paralyzes modern workplace cultures. Josh and Dr. Kiprono break down why the primitive "monkey brain" defaults to fight-or-flight reactions during high-stakes corporate pressure, and how conscious leaders can train themselves to find the space between action and reaction. They discuss the deep systemic cost of suffocating, toxic workplace environments—such as the "glorified suffering" and malignant blame cultures historically found in medical residencies—and contrast them with thriving organizations built on vulnerable communication, mutual trust, and robust succession planning. From learning how to defuse your own internal projection traps to empowering the "schedulers" and frontline technicians in your organization, this episode offers a vital, trauma-informed blueprint for building a resilient, psychologically safe culture. Key Takeaways: ✅ The Primitive Brain Trap: Understanding the neuroscience of why your "monkey brain" defaults to reactionary, fear-based decisions under pressure rather than leveraging the prefrontal cortex. ✅ Pausing the Reflex: Practical, learned behaviors—like taking a tactical timeout or sleeping on a hot email—to create space between a high-stakes trigger and a civilized reply. ✅ The Palpable Room Temperature: Recognizing how hypervigilance, workplace gossip, and fear of punishment destroy team engagement and cause employees to wait for the other shoe to drop. ✅ Dethroning the Rite of Passage: Why thriving organizations must shift away from historical "malignant environments" that glorify past suffering as a prerequisite for current success. ✅ Eradicating the Word "Just": How top-tier leaders build deep trust and uncover the hidden risks below the surface by eliminating self-diminishing language from frontline staff. ✅ Thriving Through Adversity: Shifting the leadership paradigm to realize that a healthy culture isn't defined by the absence of challenges, but by the presence of collaborative resilience when things break down. Joevon Barnes is a plumber, coach, speaker, radio host, and father of two daughters. But more than anything, he's a man who chose to break cycles, stay present, and become the father his daughters needed. In this deeply practical and inspiring conversation, Joevon joins Ned Schaut to discuss fatherhood after divorce, raising daughters, healing family wounds, overcoming anger, building generational relationships, and why showing up consistently matters more than being perfect.Joevon shares the story of growing up as the youngest of seven children, navigating the fallout that followed his parents' passing, and learning hard lessons about family, legacy, and preparation. He offers a powerful challenge to fathers everywhere: get your affairs in order, communicate your wishes clearly, and don't leave your children with unnecessary burdens after you're gone. The heart of the conversation centers around one remarkable commitment:For more than 16 years, Joevon has maintained a weekly Daddy-Daughter Night with his daughters. Through divorce, custody changes, career shifts, and every season of life, he never stopped showing up. Today, at ages 28 and 24, his daughters still prioritize that time together.Joevon and Ned discuss:Raising daughters after divorce. Why children should never be placed in the middle of parental conflict. The importance of being present, even when life gets messy. How fathers shape the future relationships of their children.Healing from anger and childhood wounds. The role of mentors, teachers, and coaches.Building friendships with aging parents.Preparing for grandfatherhood.Financial wisdom and generational legacy. Why every child deserves a father who stays. One of the most moving moments comes when Joevon reflects on his father:“He may not have been the best of pops, but he was always there.”This episode is a reminder that fatherhood is not about perfection. It's about presence. It's about consistency. It's about being there.

This episode focuses on HOPE for an epidemic affecting men (and women) in and outside the church: pornography addiction.(Ready to get free? Men: go to liberatedkings.com to get started on your journey with Jesus.)Before founding Liberated Kings, Thomas Bills spent years trapped in the same struggle affecting millions of men today: pornography, shame, secrecy, and the belief that freedom was out of reach. Everything changed when he met Jesus, discovered his true identity in Him, and stopped fighting for freedom and started living from freedom. In this powerful conversation, Ned and Thomas tackle one of the most uncomfortable—and important—topics facing men, marriages, and families today: pornography, masturbation, shame, identity, and the spiritual battle for the minds of men.Thomas shares his personal story of addiction, redemption, and transformation, explaining how pornography was never the real problem—it was the cycle he had created to medicate deeper wounds, insecurity, pain, and feelings of inadequacy.Together, Ned and Thomas unpack:Why pornography is devastating families and marriages. How AI is making the addiction crisis exponentially worse. Why shame keeps men trapped in destructive cycles. The difference between accountability and true transformation. How identity in Christ changes everything. Why most men are fighting the wrong battle. How fathers can protect future generations by doing their own healing work today. One of the most powerful moments comes when Thomas explains that many Christian men continue to identify themselves as “dirty sinners” rather than saints redeemed by Christ, creating a cycle where their beliefs continue producing the very behaviors they hate. The conversation also explores the generational impact of a father's decisions. Ned passionately argues that fathers who refuse to fight these battles today often pass those same struggles to their children tomorrow. This episode isn't ultimately about pornography. It's about freedom. It's about identity. It's about becoming the kind of man who no longer desires the counterfeit because he has discovered the real thing.Top Questions This Episode AnswersHow can a Christian man break free from pornography and masturbation? Why does shame keep men trapped in addictive behaviors? What does the Bible actually say about identity and freedom in Christ? How should fathers talk to their children about pornography and online temptation? Why are accountability groups often not enough to create lasting freedom?ResourcesLiberated Kings---------Check Out the Program Talked About: Genesis by Rise Up KingsThis episode is sponsored by Genesis - a Rite of Passage by Rise Up KingsOrder The Adventure of Fatherhood children's book hereCheck out the TEDx----------Want to learn more about The Adventure of Fatherhood?www.adventureoffatherhood.comwww.rebelandcreate.comEach week Ned sits down with a dad and asks him to open up his field notes and share with other men who find themselves on the Adventure of Fatherhood. How do I become the man, husband, father, and son God created me to be?In this deeply reflective conversation, Ned sits down with Michael to discuss identity, recovery, suffering, vulnerability, fatherhood, marriage, grief, and the lifelong journey of becoming aligned with God's love.Michael shares lessons learned from raising two sons, navigating childhood wounds, overcoming shame, recovering from unhealthy coping patterns, caring for his aging father, and ultimately losing his wife after 32 years of marriage. Through it all, he discovered a powerful truth:You cannot give what you do not possess. Eric Collins is a California entrepreneur, tax strategist, and business owner who has built and sold companies while navigating major physical adversity, including breaking his neck in five places and surviving multiple spinal fusions. In this episode, he and Ned go deep into discipline, certainty, emotional stability, fatherhood, business ownership, marriage, and the kind of intentional leadership most men want but rarely see modeled clearly. Eric shares practical systems he's built into his home life — from making breakfast for his sons every morning for nearly a decade to helping lead an 80-man “Dad's Club” at his sons' school that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for families and students. This is one of those conversations that quietly sneaks up on you. It starts with stories about fishing trips, school fundraisers, and parenting struggles, but underneath it is a serious conversation about becoming the kind of man your family can trust.Eric talks openly about growing up around abuse, wrestling through ego and unhealthy habits, learning to control his reactions, and realizing that discipline without emotional connection was damaging his relationship with his son. Rather than doubling down in pride, he humbled himself, sought wisdom, and changed course.Fathers will walk away from this episode challenged to think differently about leadership in the home. Eric's idea that a father should be “the oak tree, not the thundercloud” is one of the strongest themes in the conversation. He explains why certainty and consistency matter so deeply to children, how routines create emotional safety, and why many men unintentionally sabotage the very outcomes they want most. There's also a powerful discussion around mentorship, growth-mindedness, replacing destructive habits with healthier pursuits, and learning to accept feedback from your wife without defensiveness.A few standout takeaways from the episode:Your children need certainty more than perfection.Discipline without relationship eventually creates distance.Men need community and purposeful involvement outside of work. Most growth comes through pain, humility, and repeated course correction. You become a better father by intentionally becoming a better man.---------Check Out the Program Talked About: Genesis by Rise Up KingsThis episode is sponsored by Genesis - a Rite of Passage by Rise Up KingsOrder The Adventure of Fatherhood children's book hereCheck out the TEDx----------Want to learn more about The Adventure of Fatherhood?www.adventureoffatherhood.comwww.rebelandcreate.comEach week Ned sits down with a dad and asks him to open up his field notes and share with other men who find themselves on the Adventure of Fatherhood.
