The book of Judges gives us some of the most intriguing and tragic characters in all of the Hebrew Bible: Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah and Samson. But what did it mean to be a 'judge' in ancient Israel? To find out, Helen and Lloyd take a trip in the Biblical Time Machine with Dr Brandon Hurlbert.Dr Brandon Hurlbert (PhD, Durham University) is a teaching fellow in Hebrew Bible and Ethics at Durham University. His thesis explored the possibilities of reading the book of Judges as Christian Scripture. Syphilis is often thought of as a disease from the historic literature, but in August last year, it was declared a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance by Australia's Chief Medical Officer. Case numbers have grown year on year since it became a notifiable disease in 2004, peaking at around six and a half thousand in 2023. Syphilis is sometimes described as ‘the great imitator' because it can have so many different presentations. And it can hide away for years before revealing itself in one system of the body or other. I could've been like, “Don't worry, I know a good spot, Ms. Gibson. The original ****** Cheesecake Factory. It's huge where I come from in 2026. There's an everyday brunch menu. Every day.”Also, the future isn't “Electric Youth”; the future is unfortunately an abundance of war crimes. But… try the Chocolate Tuxedo Cream Cheesecake—it's amazing and probably 7000 calories."Out of the Blue is your magnum opus" I would say, "it's not the flashiness of Electric Youth." And my hands would be gesticulating wildly because I would be ****** nervous. "Every Out of the Blue song would win the six-man award if they could play elite basketball and were in the NBA. Excellent songs, without the max contracts—" actually let's cut this short as it's getting weird.Instead, let's just focus on the Cheesecake Factory, my near-ish location has weird fused glass plates affixed to towering wooden beams that split the booth tables. And the glass looks like the Eye of Sauron. So you walk in and there are like fifty Eyes of Sauron staring at you. And you pass throngs of people to exchange your name with the wait staff for a brick-sized pager coated in ancient soda syrup grime. And while you wait the forty-five minutes for a table, you take in the decor—this ancient pastiche of columns fused with cherub faces and flamingos. It's as if the designer was tasked with imagining what an Applebee's might look like on the island of Dr. Moreau.Speaking of waking nightmares... the present—and look, I won't tell you where to get your news, but if a pillow or military subcontractor or pharmaceutical commercial runs between programming, skip that garbage. Listen to the rain... the rain won't lie to you.

Dave Stewart is a true music icon. Born in Sunderland in 1952 his first love affair was with football – dreaming of a career playing for the Black Cats, but a knee injury and his parents' divorce changed his entire outlook. Music filled a hole - despite a music teacher who described his dreams as ‘idiotic' it became his passion, inspired by his Dad's high-tech (for the 70s!) stereo system, a Robert Johnson blues album and some eye-opening teenage experimentation with acid.He signed to Elton John's record label shortly after leaving school and after several false starts he met Annie Lennox in 1976 and formed a band together called The Tourists – a pre-curser to the significantly more successful 80s project The Eurythmics .In the 45 years since then Dave has done it all – as an artist he's a Grammy winner, as a producer he's won multiple Brit Awards, as a song-writer he's won the prestigious Silver Clef award, he's won a Golden Glove for composing a song with Mick Jagger for Alfie and in 2024 he teamed up with Joss Stone to write a musical version of The Time Traveller's Wife. It's hard to put his contribution to music into context because his impact on popular music is so vast.Let me list just SOME of the artists he's produced, written for or recorded with:Paul McCartney, Bono, Aretha Franklin, Alison Moyet, Bryan Ferry, Sinead O'Connor, No Doubt, Jon Bon Jovi, Bob Geldoff, Bryan Ferry, & Stevie Nicks. In fact in 2011 he briefly formed a supergroup comprised of himself, Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A.R. Rahman.He's one of the great innovators – in 1998 his album SlyFi became the first album to be released on the internet – it predates Google, and MySpace and Facebook wouldn't be launched for another SEVEN years.Now in his early 70s he continues to inspire – until Covid he owned and ran a creative members club in London, and through his production company Dave Stewart Entertainment he continues to push musical boundaries and work with some of the world's biggest names in music.Enjoy our chat with an icon.
