Siempre nos ha llamado la atención el icónico taxi amarillo de Nueva York, el coprotagonista de tantas películas. Pero esta imagen oculta una historia fascinante de violencia, sastres rusos, mafia y experimentos mecánicos locos. Con este vídeo inauguramos en Garaje Hermético la serie “Marcas desconocidas con historias sorprendentes”. Y empezamos fuerte con Checker Motors Corporation. De la aguja a las bombas de Chicago El origen de la marca no está en los despachos de Detroit, sino en la Rusia zarista. Morris Markin, un sastre que llegó a Chicago con menos de dos dólares en el bolsillo, acabó fortuitamente como dueño de una fábrica de carrocerías. Pero el Chicago de los años 20 era territorio de Al Capone, y el negocio del taxi era un campo de batalla. Checker nació en una guerra abierta contra su rival, Yellow Cab (propiedad de John Hertz). La competencia no era por precios, era a golpes: hubo tiroteos entre chóferes, se incendiaron flotas enteras y el punto culminante llegó en 1923, cuando la propia casa de Morris Markin fue bombardeada con dinamita. Checker tuvo que huir a Kalamazoo, Michigan, para sobrevivir y blindar su leyenda. Hay que destacar que Checker nunca fabricó sus propios propulsores; fueron maestros del "trasplante". Usaron motores Continental, coquetearon con Chrysler y finalmente firmaron un acuerdo con General Motors, montando los legendarios motores Chevrolet, lo que hoy es una bendición para los coleccionistas por la facilidad de recambios. El fantasma de VW y el final Los años 70 fueron críticos. La empresa intentó modernizarse con prototipos italianos de Ghia que no pudieron pagar, pero la historia más increíble fue el "Plan Volkswagen". En 1977, Ed Cole (expresidente de GM) compró parte de Checker con un plan revolucionario: comprar Volkswagen Rabbits (Golf mk1), cortarlos, ensancharlos y montarlos sobre chasis Checker. Chess Records was known for its great music, especially in the 1960s and 1970s, including gospel tunes. The label was set up by the Chess brothers, Leonard and Phil, and they ran it until they sold it to General Record Tape (GRT) in 1969, just before Leonard passed away.During their time with Checker, the Salem Travelers released several singles and albums, including a popular song called "Thank You Lord," from 1968. The song expresses deep gratitude to God, with lyrics that reflect on how good the Lord has been. The lead singer shares his personal struggles, talking about moments when he felt confused and lost, as if Satan was trying to lead him astray. He captures the feeling of being undecided about which way to go in life, making the song relatable for many who face their own challenges.Overall, the music of the Salem Travelers is filled with heartfelt messages and spiritual strength, touching listeners with its honesty and uplifting spirit. Während sich die Folge der letzten Woche noch wie eine harmlose Aufwärmrunde anfühlte, verschwindet das Safety Car langsam im Rückspiegel und es wird endlich wieder Vollgas gegeben. 1. Runde: Peinlichkeit. Urlaubs-Azubi Schmitt hat aus seinen Winterferien noch eine Anekdote mitgebracht, die nicht nur die drei apokalyptischen Reiter eines waschechten Schmitt-Urlaubs (Entsetzen, Scham, Verunsicherung) erscheinen lässt, sondern auch eine Lektion in Souveränität & Eleganz erteilt. Zuhören und ein besserer Mensch werden. Das ist unser Angebot. 2. Runde: Erbärmlichkeit. Jakob Lundt ist für vieles bekannt. Senseo-Papst, Kaffeearschloch, die beste Nase Deutschlands und Kuchen. Aufgrund dieser sprachlichen Marotte, kann man sich sozusagen kaum noch auf Klaas eigentliche Anekdoten und Geschichten konzentrieren. Irgendwas war da mit Promifrisuren und seinem persönlichen (!) Anruf bei einem Kundenservice, der nix geregelt, sondern sozusagen alles verschlimmert hat. Finalrunde: Checkerfrage LIVE. (Also nicht wirklich Live, aber erstmals nicht in schriftlicher Form, sondern per Sprachnachricht eingesandt) Florida-Mitarbeiter Robert hatte eine Frage ans Leben und an die Checker von Baywatch Berlin, die sofort eine heftige Diskussion hervorruft, eine unheilvolle Verbindung zu Nolans Oppenheimer offenbart und die Frage aufwirft, wie viel Menschlichkeit im Kino sinnvoll ist. Am Ende ist Robert natürlich der Depp und das Ziel erreicht: die zweite Folge von Baywatch Berlin ist im Kasten, man hat sich wieder an den Alltag gewöhnt und Kult-Konsti plant seinen nächsten Urlaub.
