Spencer M. Clark was born in Brattleboro. Eventually, he moved to Washington, DC and became the first Superintendent of the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing. In 1866 he placed his own image on United States currency, a five-cent note, and had the notes circulated as legal tender. US Congress had not authorized this action and a scandal ensued. This was not Spencer M. Clark's first scandal....
It's Monday, June 1st, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Egypt grants legal status to 191 church buildings The Egyptian government released an order the week of May 18th granting legal status to 191 church buildings that previously lacked official recognition, reports International Christian Concern. In total, 3,804 churches and related buildings have been approved since the creation of a committee to review churches in 2016, according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide. Thousands of churches and associated buildings have been built in recent decades. Still, the northeast African country of Egypt maintains a system for approving Christian places of worship that is separate from — and more difficult than — that for Sunni Muslim places of worship. According to Open Doors, Egypt is the 42nd most oppressive country worldwide for Christians. Pope Leo meets with pro-abort, pro-sex perversion Chicago mayor On May 28th, Pope Leo XIV met in a private audience with radical Chicago Democratic mayor Brandon Johnson, during which they reportedly discussed ICE raids in the city, slavery reparations, and the Iran war, but not key moral issues such as abortion and the homosexual transgender agenda, both of which Mayor Johnson supports, reports LifeSiteNews.com. The mayor has a radically pro-abortion and pro-sexual perversion record, previously pledging to offer free Abortion Kill Pills and to prosecute pro-life sidewalk counselors. And, in 2024, the mayor commemorated “National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day.” At the time, Chicago Mayor Johnson said, “We commend the bravery and resilience of abortion providers and look forward to continuing to support their efforts to ensure that reproductive rights are upheld and respected. Together, we can resist attempts to roll back the progress we have made, ensuring Chicago remains a sanctuary for choice.” Notice, he failed to mention that the choice the mother makes is the choice to murder her innocent pre-born baby boy or baby girl. In God's conversation with the prophet Jeremiah, He said, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5) Supreme Court Justice Amy Barrett targeted in attempted swatting U.S. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett was the target of an apparent “swatting” attempt after an unknown caller falsely reported gunfire at her Virginia residence, reports The Christian Post. On May 27th, Fairfax County police said that a caller contacted the department's nonemergency line claiming to have heard shots fired at Barrett's home. Officers quickly coordinated with Supreme Court Police assigned to the residence and determined the report was false. Texas Governor Abbott blasted Democrat James Talarico Appearing on Fox News Channel, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott blasted James Talarico, the Democrat Senatorial candidate, who will face off in the general election against Republican Ken Paxton for U.S. Senate this fall. Listen. ABBOTT: “Talarico himself said he has a record that he's going to run on. Let me tell you quickly about that record, about votes that he cast, not crazy things that he said. But he cast votes that support [Diversity, Equity and Inclusion] in our public schools, support defunding our law enforcement, supports boys in girls' sports, supports transition surgery for minors, supports a state income tax in the state of Texas, supports open border policies. “So, the votes he's cast set a record for how challenging he would be for any average Texan. You know, oftentimes you hear President Trump talk about a 90/10 issue, where 90% of the people are lined up on one side, 10% on the other side. Talarico's votes are on the 10% side.” How a small-town Arkansas man got God on America's money And finally, Matthew Rothert Sr., a Presbyterian furniture manufacturer and avid coin collector born in 1904, was at church in Chicago on June 21, 1953, when he believed the Holy Spirit impressed upon him the idea that the phrase "In God We Trust" should be featured on American banknotes as it did on coins, according to his daughter, Alice Rothert Nelson, reports The Christian Post. She said, "The collection plate was going around, and he felt God tell him that the coins had 'In God We Trust,' but it was the bills that went all around the world. And he believed he should get 'In God We Trust' on the bills of the paper money, and so that started the campaign." By way of background, "In God We Trust" was first engraved on U.S. coins during the Civil War, after Mark Richards Watkinson, a Baptist minister from Pennsylvania, petitioned then-Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase at the end of 1861 to promote "the recognition of the Almighty God in some form in our coins" amid the fading illusion of a short, relatively bloodless conflict. Pastor Watkinson told Chase, "You are probably a Christian. What if our Republic were now shattered beyond recognition? Would not the antiquaries, [those who study history], in succeeding centuries, rightly reason, from our part, we were a heathen nation?" He saw the increasingly brutal, intractable war as a divine chastening that could destroy the country. Expressing hope that honoring God in such a public way "would relieve us from the [disgrace] of heathenism." Watkinson noted, "This would place us openly under the divine protection we have personally claimed. From my heart, I have felt our national shame in disowning God." Salmon Chase and James Pollock, a Presbyterian minister then serving as director of the U.S. Mint, agreed with Watkinson, ultimately leading Congress to pass a law in April 1864 allowing "In God We Trust" on the one- and two-cent pieces. Pollock said, “We claim to be a Christian nation—why should we not vindicate our character by honoring the God of Nations. Our national coinage should do this. Its legends and devices should declare our trust in God—in Him who is "King of Kings and Lord of Lords." AUDIO FROM DIVINE HYMNS: “King of kings and Lord of lords. Glory Hallelujah. King of kings and Lord of lords. Glory Hallelujah.” Revelation 19:16 says, “On [Christ's] robe and on His thigh, He has this name written: 'King of kings and Lord of lords.'” The U.S. Congress passed another law in March 1865 to place the words on all gold and silver coins, which was the last act President Abraham Lincoln signed before his assassination. Nearly a century later, the motto gained renewed attention when the United States found itself embattled again during the global tensions of the Cold War. Seeing its simple declaration of faith as a necessary contrast to the atheist communism that animated the Soviet Union, Matthew Rothert followed Watkinson's example. He gave speeches, rallied support, and fired off many letters to officials, including President Dwight Eisenhower and Treasury Secretary George Humphrey, urging them to add the phrase to paper money. In a 1987 interview, Matthew Rothert, at the age of 83, said, "The Lord seemed to tell me to do this. He put the idea so strongly in my mind that I worked on it until I accomplished my goal. I realized the circulation of American coins was limited to the boundaries of the country, while U.S. paper money circulated worldwide. It looked like Americans were saying they trusted in God only a few cents' worth!" In an unusually swift and bipartisan action, the bill was on President Eisenhower's desk by July 11, 1955. Changing the master dies and printing plates at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to include "In God We Trust" would typically have been too cost-prohibitive, but, providentially, they were already set to be replaced that year to accommodate a new printing process. And now you know the rest of the story! Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, June 1st, in the year of our Lord 2026. David Barthold's journey as a printmaker began at age 13, took him through the legendary studio of Atelier 17 in Paris, and eventually led to a hiatus that ended in a burst of lino-cut street art during the pandemic. In this episode, we explore the life and work of a native New Yorker who refuses to stay in one lane. We dig into his early start learning under Ruth Leaf as a teenager and honing his craft at Oberlin and in France; printmaking as protest and how the pandemic pushed David out of the studio and onto the streets of Park Slope, using wheat-pasted portraits of figures like RBG and George Floyd to engage his community; David's transition from painting back to the "grease and gears" of the print studio, and why he finds spontaneity in such a technical medium; and building the ecosystem understanding the vital role of community, shared spaces, and the mentors who keep the print world spinning. David's work is a masterclass in how a centuries-old medium can strike at the heart of contemporary culture. Artist Eva Dixon talks about the sophistication of not understanding while making, the potency of found imagery, how our culture is shaping the difference between being seen and being looked at, and more.Eva Dixon (b. 2000) is an Australian artist living in London. Dixon's practice, spanning assemblage, sculpture and painting, explores homo-eroticism in sport and porn, the space race, lesbianism and industry. Horny reimaginings of goal celebrations and tackles play against seductive or kinky materials; aluminium sheets, walnut frames, darkroom filters, buckles, clips and leather straps. Rockets built from stolen street signs and gifted electrical spools. As a collector of things; disused industrial materials, old football and boy-mags, pins and play cards, the material is a key-research point to Dixon. Witnesses Who Chose God Above Life Itself Today's Homily contrasts two models of leadership and discipleship . . . . . . drawn from Scripture and tradition. King David is presented as a leader chosen by God who, despite his sins, remained humble, repentant, and rooted in reverence for the Lord. His strength was not perfection, but his willingness to return to God and recognize that his authority and life came from Him. Herod, by contrast, represents a leader who hears the truth but lacks the courage to live it. Though he respects John the Baptist and is intrigued by his message, Herod allows pride, public opinion, and personal weakness to override conscience. His fear of losing face leads to the unjust execution of John. The Church then proposes St. Paul Miki and his companions as a third example . . . not merely leaders, but witnesses (martyrs) who fully embrace the truth of Christ. Unlike Herod, they do not compromise when faced with pressure or death; they proclaim that “Jesus is Lord” even from the cross. The message for Christians today is a call to moral courage: we may not face martyrdom, but we are continually asked to stand for truth, live from God, and return to Him in all things. The faithful are encouraged to pray for the strength to choose the path of David and the martyrs rather than that of Herod. Listen to this Meditation Media. Using over 17,500 letters of handmade murrine tiles, Mathieu Grodet composed La Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen, which translated means the Declaration of Human Rights, which was written in 1789. Recreated in mosaic style, dark red was used to represent blood, with the ivory-colored background symbolizing the ivory tower that freedom must be taken from. Intense attention to detail combined with a contemporary message defines Grodet's multi-disciplinary works in glass. A French-born artist living and working in Canada, Grodet also creates thin and elegant glass objects in classic Venetian style, engraved using a Dremel tool with imagery that addresses modern-day ideas and issues. Says Grodet, “Several themes are recurrent: the memory, the inventories, but also the lie (propaganda) or the secret.” His work reflects a deep interrogation of the world and its violence. Later, Grodet learned to paint on various glass shapes using enamel, and through these techniques was able to make his illustrations more fanciful and full of color. Though it provided an alternative way to express on glass, the enameling process can be time-consuming and technically difficult. Firing can be stressful, and mistakes are unfixable. In one instance, Grodet invested three months of work on one piece, which he had to abandon after issues with the firing. He hasn't worked with enamel since, but toys with the idea of revisiting these processes that afford so much artistic space. In parallel with glassblowing, Grodet learned flameworking and quickly discovered it was far easier to put together a small flameworking studio than a hot shop. At a Loren Stump workshop presented at the Corning Museum of Glass, Grodet learned the ancient technique of murrine. When the pandemic hit, he finally had some time off from teaching to focus on flameworked murrine and now spends most of his studio time on the techniques. Says Grodet: “Glassblowing will always have a special place in my heart. Your entire body is needed to work the hot shop, and I love the physicality of engaging with fire and water – it is playing with terrestrial forces – something bigger than us. However, now I am enjoying the art of murrine and its technical and strategic aspects. It is like building a house; you need to carefully plan every step over weeks. It also involves other diverse techniques, such as cold working, marquetry and mosaic. I am in uncharted territory on the murrine planet.” Grodet was born in Orleans, France, where he first studied art and drawing at the Visual Art Institute of Orleans. In 1999, he discovered the medium of glass and began his career in this ancient art by training at several studios across France and Europe. He began learning flameworking at CERFAV (the European Centre for Research and Training in Glass Art). After many travels, he dropped his suitcases in Canada, where he now applies the various different techniques acquired over the years to his artistic practice. With all his work, Grodet explores themes of contradiction, power, duality and the absurdity of life. Represented by Sandra Ainsley Gallery, Toronto, Ontario, and Galerie Elena Lee in Montreal, Quebec, Grodet's art has been shown at SOFA Chicago, Galerie Espace Verre, and is held in several museum collections, including The Corning Museum of Glass and the Art Institute of Chicago. He has taught and demonstrated around the world. From September 25 to November 9, 2025, Grodet's work will be on view at Musée du Verre, site du Bois du Cazier, Charleroi, Belgium. The artist recently taught a murrine class at Salem Community College, June 16 through 20 followed by a medieval glassblowing class at the Coring Museum of Glass, June 23 through July 4. He will teach at the Glass Furnace in Istanbul, August 4 through 14, and his final teaching gig of 2025, a murrine class, takes place in Kansas City from November 8 through 12 at the studio of Sara Sally LaGrand.
Today's episode addresses one of the most pressing challenges for leaders: getting teams to take real ownership of their work and their organizational culture. Encouraging ownership is a proven way to unlock peak performance, improve retention, and foster genuine satisfaction among team members. For many leaders, though, instilling this sense of responsibility goes beyond just handing out incentives—it requires a cultural shift and purposeful leadership tactics. Ownership in the workplace means empowering individuals and teams to see the bigger picture, to make decisions, and to feel personally invested in their organization's success. When team members truly believe it is “their unit,” engagement and performance skyrocket. This episode breaks down actionable strategies, including drawing inspiration from military tradition, that any leader—no matter their sector or authority level—can use to inspire this powerful sense of ownership. By making it clear that each member has a voice and a stake, leaders can drive transformational results and set their organizations up for lasting success. Last year I went to an exhibition at the Städel museum in Frankfurt that was entitled Holbein and the Renaissance in the North. That is the elder Holbein, the father of the Holbein who came to England. This exhibition has now ended, but there is still a great summary available on the Städel website.Though obviously not present at the exhibition, one key focus was the Fugger chapel in the church of St. Anne in Augsburg, one of the earliest and most significant Renaissance building north of the Alps. I wanted to kick off this episode with this chapel and then move on to Holbein, Burgkmair etc. But as I dug deeper and deeper into the late 15th and early 16th century art in Southern Germany, the more connections and links emerged that I hope you will find as fascinating as I did.Links to artworks:Fugger chapel: Die Fuggerkapelle | St. Anna AugsburgRiemenschneider Heilig Blut Altar: The Altar of the Holy Blood | ReliquarianThe Hare: Young Hare, 1502 - Albrecht Durer - WikiArt.orgSchongauer St. Anthony: Martin Schongauer | Saint Anthony Tormented by Demons | The Metropolitan Museum of ArtRhinocerus: Albrecht Dürer | The Rhinoceros | The Metropolitan Museum of ArtRitter, Tod und Teufel and other works: Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) - The Metropolitan Museum of ArtThe music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. In this episode of Platemark, Ann talks with Susan Dackerman, a curator and art historian specializing in Northern European print culture. They discuss Susan's recent book, Dürer's Knots: Early European Print and the Islamic East, which looks at the artist's relationship to the Islamic world, revealing groundbreaking insights about the intersection of early modern printmaking and contemporary history. Susan's book covers three of Dürer's prints or print series. The first section looks at The Sea Monster (Das Meerwunder), c. 1498, and postulates that it chronicles the return to Venice of Caterina Cornado following her forced abdication as the last queen of Cyprus in 1489. Susan pieces together the narrative, which often claims to be about the abduction of a woman on the fins of Neptune. The second section looks at a series of six woodcuts Dürer made to mimic the designs of silver inlay found in Mamluk brass bowls. Susan has an intriguing theory about the Knots's connection to a set of engravings by none other than Leonardo da Vinci. The final section looks at the iron etching Landscape with a Cannon, 1518, and answers the question why make this image as an etching rather than an engraving. The book challenges traditional narratives and recasts Dürer's prints that reference the Islamic East as much more nuanced and reflective of contemporaneous history. Susan's book is clear, concise, and thoughtful, and well worth the read. 2/8: The Missing Thread: A Women's History of the Ancient World Hardcover - by Daisy Dunn (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Missing-Thread-Womens-History-Ancient/dp/0593299663 Around four thousand years ago, the mysterious Minoans sculpted statues of topless women with snakes slithering on their arms. Over one thousand years later, Sappho wrote great poems of longing and desire. For classicist Daisy Dunn, these women—whether they were simply sitting at their looms at home or participating in the highest echelons of power—were up to something much more interesting than other histories would lead us to believe. Together, these women helped to make antiquity as we know it. In this monumental work, Dunn reconceives our understanding of the ancient world by emphasizing women's roles within it. The Missing Thread never relegates women to the sidelines and is populated with well-known names such as Cleopatra and Agrippina, as well as the likes of Achaemenid consort Atossa and Olympias, a force in Macedon. Spanning three thousand years, the story moves from Minoan Crete to Mycenaean Greece, from Lesbos to Asia Minor, from the Persian Empire to the royal court of Macedonia, and concludes with Rome and its growing empire. The women of antiquity are undeniably woven throughout the fabric of history, and in The Missing Thread they finally take center stage. 1589 Engraving women of Rome mythology

I posted this (kinda salty) Instagram Reel back in May… and boy did people have feelings about it. [Please please please be kind if you're going to comment there!]Everyone says they want more “authenticity” on social media. But what happens when you show up as your imperfect, un-polished self on social media… and people don't like it? This is a SUPER IMPORTANT episode for anyone who wants to show up more, but you're terrified of what people might say. I share: Why this Reel might have been triggering (Was I really an ungrateful, braggy b*tch?)Why I posted it anyway, even though I knew it might be controversial The crucial lessons for any business owner wanting to show up more unfiltered on social mediaYou know what makes social media hard? Pretending to be someone you're not. I hope this episode inspires you to do less of that, and more of being your brave, true self.***Previous Episodes about me f*cking up on social media: Episode 44 and Episode 45--Our Holiday Shop has 50% off our Engraving & Teaching courses! What if calligraphy is your “thing”, but not necessarily the “thing” that your towns all about? Kind of makes it hard to seek out customers, right? Wrong!Whether it's, “There's too MUCH competition in my area!”, or “There's no demand in my area!”, your brain will ALWAYS find ways to cast doubt about being successful. On this episode of The Shinah Show, I'm sharing my best strategies for finding clients and work despite being in a small town (or one that has NO idea what calligraphy is…). I'm breaking it down into 4 areas of work to explore, including:Engraving & Live Event Calligraphy - how executing a craft with a higher price point can help cut down on the stress of finding a large client baseTeaching (even online!) – why sharing your craft can introduce your area to calligraphy & create unique opportunities for workshops (calligraphy on the farm, anyone?)Digital Work – tips on expanding your work via digitizing to increase your client baseSmall Town Connections – how to use local businesses & shops to your advantage!I've had plenty of students who live in the middle of nowhere and have still found a way to turn a profit with their calligraphy skills. Don't let the size of your town be the reason that holds you back – because if you truly WANT something, you must put in the work to get there!Don't forget - The Holiday Shop is open now through December 17th, 2024! It has our best course deals of the year & exclusive bonuses!
