It is time to get rid of the electoral college! All voters, regardless of their political affiliation, are disenfranchised because the power of our votes are either diluted or inflated, depending entirely on where you live. This is contrary to the intention of the Constitution and its Amendments regarding equal rights under the law.  This is against the “one person, one vote” principle. This is a non-partisan issue. To read it as a 5-minute blog To watch it as a 5-minute video Across the political spectrum, advocates for abolishing the electoral college system include Brookings Institution, the Heritage Foundation, National League of Women Voters, Pew Research Foundation, etc.  How can we replace the electoral college system? There are two ways: either by Constitutional Amendment, or by the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC).  Amending the US Constitution requires a two-thirds vote in both US House of Representatives and the Senate.Three-fourths of state legislatures must then ratify the amendment. This is challenging, since states with disproportionately more voting power won't easily give up.  NPVIC, on the other hand, can bypass this challenge, with the state's plenary power over election, believed to be given by the US Constitution. As of now, 17 states have already signed up, consisting of 77% of the 270 electoral votes needed to elect a President. When more states join the pact, they will award all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  What can we do as citizens? Sign up and do something, at various organizations, such as:  https://www.nationalpopularvote.com/ (Bipartisan support for NPVIC) https://www.lwv.org/opov (League of Women Voters) https://abolishtheelectoralcollegepac.org/ https://www.thenationalvote.com/ https://abolishtheelectoralcollegepac.org/    –  THANK YOU, for sharing with others! © Joanne Z. As part of Radio 1190's 2020 Election night coverage, Professor John Eastman explains the electoral college and his stance on the system used to determine the US's presidency. In the 2020 election, Colorado voters were able to vote on Proposition 113, which, if passed, would result in Colorado joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, an agreement between states to award their electoral college votes to whichever candidate wins the national popular vote. According to the Denver Post, Colorado passed Proposition 113 with a 52.1% YES vote. However, the NPVIC would not come into effect until states representing at least 270 electoral votes, the number of electoral votes one needs to win the presidency, adopt it, according to Ballotpedia. Professor John Eastman is the Henry Salvatori Professor of Law & Community Service at Chapman University and the 2020-2021 Visiting Scholar in Conservative Thought and Policy at CU Boulder's Bruce D. Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization. This description was updated on November 12, 2020, to include background information on Professor John Eastman. Interview by Steven Michael Hlavac Jr. Originally aired on November 3, 2020.

Proposition 113 would enter Colorado into the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC). The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is an interstate compact to award member states' presidential electors to the candidate that receives the most votes nationwide. The NPVIC will go into effect if states representing at least 270 Electoral College votes—the number required to win the presidency—adopt the legislation. Rose Pugliese is a County Commissioner representing District 3 of Mesa County, and is opposed to Proposition 113. On this week's episode, she shares the reasons for her opposition which include the belief that submitting to a compact of this type is tantamount to vote theft, a diminishing of Colorado's voice in national issues, and more. You can see more at ProtectColoradosVote.org.  Rose graduated with honors from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a minor in Japanese. She attended St. John's University School of Law and is admitted to practice law in Colorado, New York, and Florida. She is a dedicated member of the community, is a member of Rotary and participates in many community service projects. Hosted by Colorado Business Roundtable President Debbie Brown.

Defenders of the Electoral College argue that, to coin a recent Trumpian phrase, the cure might worse than the disease. Yet surely there are better alternatives than allowing the loser to win. Clinton won three million more votes than Trump in 2016, but the current arrangements barred her from becoming the first female president. Trump's appeal to base instincts and to white nationalism are exactly the things that the founding fathers feared. It was why they created the Electoral College in the first place - to protect the people from themselves. Yet it turned out the people were wiser than the Electoral College, which gave us nativism (Trump) instead of wise albeit flawed experience (Clinton). If The Electoral College cannot serve its purpose it should either be scrapped (unlikely) or manipulated (possible) in such a way to ensure that the winner of the popular vote always becomes president. One alternative, the NPVIC, gives us that assurance and deserves our consideration. Whether anyone can understand it is another matter!

Have you ever heard of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact? Neither had Sarah, but this is right up Chris' geeky alley. Chris brings Sarah up to speed on what the NPVIC is, which state just joined, and how it could change electoral politics in the U.S. Interested in learning more about the NPVIC? Check out their wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact), which actually does a pretty good job laying out the idea and the objections to it. Or check out their website at www.nationalpopularvote.com, which has a lot of information about what the Compact is and isn't. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
