Hour 1: Tommy breaks down the Mets acquiring Freddy Peralta and how they are now in prime position to dethrone the Dodgers this season in the National League. That and more.
As subzero weather grips Chicago, The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney are looking forward to spring training in Arizona and what’s next for the Cubs. In this episode, the two beat writers analyze the Peralta deal and what it means for the Brewers and the rest of the National League. Another Cooperstown election and the 10-year reunion of the 2016 World Series team prompts a question: Will anyone from that group make the Hall of Fame? Plus more on Chas McCormick and the strong sense that this front office is not done yet.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The National League gets underway this coming weekend and ahead of this Rob is joined on the pod by Edwin McGreal and Billy Joe Padden to set the scene for another year of inter-county action for Mayo, who this year are now managed by Andy Moran. The lads look back on how first seasons in charge panned out for other Mayo managers in the past and consider how Andy Moran might approach the year ahead. The benefit of using a large number of players in the FBD is discussed, while the lads also chat about last Sunday's frustrating loss to Galway and why this rivalry always matters, regardless of when Mayo and Galway meet.
The conversation shifts from vibes to numbers as Vegas steps in. Using FanDuel win totals, the guys break down how the Mets and Yankees are actually being viewed heading into the season and the results are eye-opening. The Yankees are still favorites in the American League despite a quiet offseason, while the Mets are suddenly sitting right behind the Dodgers as one of the top teams in the National League. That leads to a deeper debate about roster construction and expectations. Why the Mets trading for Freddy Peralta was a necessity, not a luxury. Why the Yankees passing on him made sense given their rotation depth. And why David Stearns may be closer to finishing his “painting” than fans want to admit. Calls pour in arguing whether a 90-win projection is fair, whether Peralta should be pushed deeper into games, and whether an extension changes everything. Plus, the crew reacts to how tightly bunched the NL really is behind the Dodgers and asks the question Mets fans cannot avoid anymore: if Vegas believes this team is real, do you?
James previews the AFC and NFC Championship games (4:49), Alex runs through his mid-season NBA tier rankings for the Eastern Conference (20:43), and Tyler continues his MLB cap rankings with the National League (53:32).
Episode #472: “Where is my grandmother's vote?!” asks Thiri. Her core argument is that Myanmar's struggle today is not a failed revolution, but the evolution of a long, cyclical people's movement, whose legitimacy most recently derives from a valid election overturned by the military, and from the accumulated sacrifice and sustained moral agency of ordinary people. For Thiri, the most powerful form of resistance now is preserving dignity, voice, and mutual care amid prolonged uncertainty. She grounds this argument in lived experience. Her grandmother, eighty-two at the time, insisted on voting in person in the November 2020 general election despite being eligible for early voting at home. On election day morning, she woke before dawn and went to the polling station to cast her ballot for the National League for Democracy; a week later, she died. She never witnessed the coup that overturned the election results, sparing her the pain of seeing what she regarded as a sacred civic duty rendered meaningless. For Thiri, the legitimacy crisis begins there: millions of votes, like her grandmother's, were cast in good faith but never honored. From this starting point, Thiri argues that any new election organized by the same military lacks moral and political legitimacy. She describes it as an attempt to erase their unresolved theft. Democracy, she insists, cannot be reset without reckoning with the original violation. The election matters deeply to the military and to some international actors seeking closure, but not to people living with airstrikes, displacement, and fear. To the junta, it functions as an exit strategy that just sustains their oppressive rule in the guise civilian governance. To put the despair surrounding these times in Myanmar in context, Thiri turns to movement theory. She describes movements as cyclical, marked by peaks of hope followed by repression and exhaustion. The downturn now, she emphasizes, is but a natural phase, and to not get overly caught up in it. Thiri believes the present moment calls for reflection, role clarity, and recognition of small victories that preserve people power. Survival itself becomes a form of resistance. She frames emotional self-preservation as defiance, concluding, “I would rather choose to remember the kindness and the community and the resilience of people that are against any form of oppression.”

Rare is the professional athlete who plays his entire Hall Of Fame career in his hometown. For 19 years, Barry Larkin did just that, playing for the Cincinnati Reds. His career path took him from a leadoff hitter setting the table, to an RBI man in the heart of the order, with stops up and down the lineup. Along the way Barry Larkin was selected to 12 All Star games, won 9 Silver Slugger Awards, three Gold Gloves, a National League MVP, an Olympic Silver Medal and a World Championship. He was a key ingrediant in the evolution of the Shortstop position, particularly in the National League before inter-league play, combining steady hitting, power, speed and stellar defense. We're back with another episode of I Had Trials Once and this time we're joined by former Sheffield Wednesday, Port Vale, Livingston, Oldham, Torquay, Buxton, Matlock and current Curzon Ashton winger...JACK STOBBS Jack sits down to talk all things football from life at Sheffield Wednesday to the harsh reality of playing men's football. The lads start the pod with Jack discussing his decision to drop into semi-pro football for the first time in his career and why the transition has been much easier than anticipated. Jack then talks the lads through his early life in football playing for Sheffield Wednesday, tough tackles from David Prutton and having imposter syndrome when playing for the first team. The trio then chat in depth about the difficulties young players face when adapting to men's football, why the lower leagues are tougher than people think and do academy players carry too much ego? They then chat about Jack's time at Oldham and why despite being close off the pitch they couldn't make it work on the pitch and the feeling of suffering relegations and turmoil times at both Oldham & Torquay. The lads then discuss how Jack found his love for the game whilst playing non-league for both Matlock & Buxton, the challenges that came with playing in the National League North and why he isn't closing the door on full time football. Finally they end the pod talking about his life at Curzon Ashton, aspirations for the season and why there's such a good feel food factor around the place.
The SF Giants have just lost a place in the World Series, with arch rivals the Dodgers taking the National League's spot the previous evening. The Giants' 94-67 record with one game to go is not enough. Game 152 has become one to win for the pride of the club and to end the season with a W.The Cincinnati Reds were even further back in the National League. The core trio of Frank Robinson, Vada Pinson, and a young Pete Rose was promising, but as a team, the Reds fell short of the Dodgers' power or the Giants' finesse. Coming into this final game at 89-72, the totemic 90-win mark is within reach and a chance to overhaul Pittsburgh to finish third in the NL. High above Candlestick Park is another final moment, as Waite Hoyt prepares to call the game for the listening Reds fans back home. Following a career that included three World Series rings over twenty-one years and seven teams, he became one of the first players to transition into broadcasting. Now, after 24 years of calling strikes, balls and fouls, this would be Hoyt's commentating swansong. Featuring around two-thirds of the game, today's classic game is not a complete record of Hoyt's last game, but it is a record. And with so much of the early days of broadcasting lost to time, it's an excellent record of a baseball legend You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN196510030.shtml This game was played on October 3, 1965.

"The Giants win the pennant!" is the most famous call in sports history. For 50 years, the 1951 National League pennant race was celebrated as the ultimate miracle—a 13.5-game comeback that shouldn't have been possible. But it wasn't just a miracle. It may have been a heist. In this episode, we break down the elaborate, high-tech cheating scheme the New York Giants ran out of the center-field clubhouse at the Polo Grounds. We're talking telescopes, hidden wires, and a buzzer system installed by an electrician who—in a cruel twist of irony—was a die-hard Brooklyn Dodgers fan.We dive into:The Scheme: How the "Polo Grounds Plot" actually worked. The Stats: Did the buzzer actually help them hit? (The answer will surprise you). The Confessions: Why the players weren't sorry, but proud of their "treachery."Was Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" tainted? Let's dig into the details.
Despite more than two years of intense negotiations, the Veterans Day deadline to agree on the allotment of reduced water supplies under the Colorado River Compact passed without a consensus. If the seven states divided into the upper and lower basins of the river cannot put forward a joint proposal by February 14, the federal government will institute its own plan—which will likely result in appeals to the Supreme Court. Since the first federal shortage declaration in 2021, Arizona has volunteered to accept the largest cuts in shares of Colorado River water. Given that a third of its overall water demand has relied on the river's supply, leaders in the state are anxious to conclude the current negotiations so that their long-term planning for alternatives can proceed. The Central Arizona Project (CAP) is a 330-mile manmade canal built to transport Arizona's portion of Colorado River water across the state. Approved for federal funding by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968, CAP is an outstanding example of the infrastructural might that has often been required for cities in the Ten Across region to thrive. The urban boom that began in Phoenix and Tucson in the 1980s and 90s would not have been possible without CAP water. In this episode Duke Reiter and Terry Goddard, CAP Board president and former Phoenix mayor, discuss how the state has weathered uncertainties surrounding growth and water security in the past, and how leaders need to step up to meet the present moment...and the future. While mayor of Phoenix from 1984 to 1990, Terry conceived and presided over the Phoenix Futures Forum, the largest city visioning process in the U.S., measured by the number of citizen participants and scope.
