Leila Rahimi and Mark Grote discussed the Cubs' 5-4 win against the Guardians on Wednesday and listened to Chicago star outfielder Kyle Tucker's comments about being named an All-Star Game starter for the National League.
With two-thirds of the National League's starting outfield, the Cubs will be well-represented at Major League Baseball's showcase event. But Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker aren't the only Cubs who deserve to make the trip to Atlanta. The Athletic's Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney explain Crow-Armstrong's journey to this moment and Tucker's unflappable nature during a contract year. Their presence has allowed Seiya Suzuki to flourish. This first-place team also features several pitchers who should be in the conversation.Get 20% off your first Slab Pack or card purchase by going to ArenaClub.com/FOUL and use code FOUL. Wastewater monitoring is a valuable, efficient, and robust tool that public health officials can use to guide public health decision making across the nation. When we turn on the tap or flush the toilet, we often don't think about where all that water goes. Wastewater, the used water from our homes, schools, and businesses, holds valuable information about the health of our community. Wastewater monitoring can help cities manage wastewater effectively and also creates a safer, healthier, and more responsive living environment for their communities. This blog takes a closer look at five important things to know about wastewater monitoring and how it can help city leaders ensure the health of their communities. 1. Wastewater is more than just water Wastewater is a mix of bits and pieces that go down our drains – soap, food bits, medicines, toilet paper, and even poop. When this mix is let loose into the environment without proper cleaning, it can mess up our lakes, rivers, and oceans. And not only that, it can be bad for our health too. 2. Wastewater monitoring gives communities a health checkup Just as doctors examine us to catch early signs of illness, experts examine wastewater to see what's in it. They look for things like diseases that can affect our health. Wastewater monitoring data can help city leaders identify disease spread early and take steps to keep everyone safe. 3. Wastewater monitoring is an early warning system for disease spread Wastewater holds clues about outbreaks of diseases like COVID-19, polio, flu, and more before they happen. When experts test wastewater, they can notice if diseases are starting to spread more. This helps them catch possible outbreaks early and take action to keep everyone safe. They don't leave anyone out—every home, business, and neighborhood connected to the sewage system is included in the process. 4. Monitoring wastewater involves sampling, testing, and analysis Sampling: Small amounts of wastewater are collected from different points in the treatment process. Experts use these samples to see what's in the water. Testing: Using various tools and equipment, they test the samples to find out the levels of chemicals, bacteria, and other substances. Analysis: Experts analyze the data to understand the changes in disease spread and whether new diseases are starting to appear. Analysis results enable city leaders to make proactive decisions to protect community health and well-being. 5. Wastewater monitoring is a special tool for city leaders that benefits everyone City leaders can use information from monitoring wastewater to make important decisions that protect the health of everyone in their communities. Wastewater monitoring data can help city leaders: Talk to the public in better ways Promote actions to keep the community safe (like wearing masks and staying apart) Send medical tests, vaccines, and treatments to the people and places that need them the most Make sure hospitals and clinics have enough staff Wastewater might not be dinner table conversations, but it impacts our lives more than we realize. Wastewater monitoring is an important tool that can help city leaders make good decisions and take early action to prevent disease spread to keep the people they serve healthy. So, next time you flush, remember that what you send down the drain has important information that can help create and maintain healthy communities where everyone thrives. A 1980s designated hitter is traded to the National League, a fish-needs-a-bicycle baseball moment reminiscent of recent US diplomacy, and a 20-game winner who pitched as Theodore Roosevelt charged up San Juan Hill throws it all away in favor of good diction. The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. America's brighter mirror, baseball reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman shares his obsessions: history from inside and outside of the game, politics, stats, and Casey Stengel quotations. Along the way, we'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?

Episode #352: Nicholas Coppel's tenure as Australia's ambassador to Myanmar (2015–2018) provides a unique lens on the country's transition toward democracy, as well as the enduring challenges posed by military dominance. Serving during the historic 2015 elections, Coppel witnessed the National League for Democracy (NLD) rise to power under Aung San Suu Kyi. Yet despite the optimism surrounding the election, the military's entrenched authority under the 2008 Constitution continued to hinder reform. Retaining control of key ministries and 25% of parliamentary seats, the military ensured an enduring imbalance of power, despite the civilian government's best efforts. Coppel's engagement was largely with the civilian government, as the military remained resistant to diplomacy. Australian programs like English language training for military officers aimed to bridge gaps, but he acknowledges their limited impact. Coppel's reflections highlight how this lack of meaningful dialogue with the military constrained international efforts to anticipate or mitigate future conflicts, including during and after the 2021 coup. Coppel outlines the difficult balance the international community faces in responding to Myanmar's post-coup environment. He notes that symbolic gestures like refusing to appoint ambassadors are clear signals of disapproval but do not exert meaningful pressure on the military regime. He warns that some well-intentioned actions, such as corporate withdrawals, have produced perverse outcomes—like increasing the military's revenue share in sectors such as oil and gas—while simultaneously harming ordinary civilians, such as garment workers losing jobs. Rather than blanket disengagement, he encourages a more thoughtful approach: supporting efforts that sustain the people of Myanmar without empowering the military, including initiatives like exile media, telehealth, and distance education. Technology, according to Coppel, plays a dual role in Myanmar's crisis. While it enables resistance through fundraising and information sharing, it also facilitates military surveillance and propaganda. Despite these challenges, he remains cautiously optimistic, believing that change will come from the resilience of Myanmar's people. “I would encourage your listeners to remain engaged with Myanmar. I would hate to think that the country and our attention on it, and our interest in it is diminished because of the actions of a military general,” Coppel urges, emphasizing the importance of global support for the people of Myanmar.

With the Midsummer Classic set to take place in Atlanta at Truist Park on July 15th, today is the day that All-Star Game ballots have dropped—and it's up to the public to make their choices. While some players might be locks to start the game (looking at you, Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani), there are a few sports that could see some interesting position battles. Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman go down the ballots for the American and National League squads, making their picks for who they think should be voted in as starters. They wonder if Juan Soto can beat out an impressive trio of NL outfielders, why Dave Roberts could be selective with his Los Angeles Dodgers players and whether Rafael Devers even bothers to bring a glove with him to Atlanta. Later on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys examine the weird season that the Atlanta Braves are having—and why it's oddly similar to the Boston Red Sox—before going around the league to discuss all the injury news surrounding the Houston Astros and New York Mets, among other teams. Matt Spiegel and Laurence Holmes opened their show by taking stock of the Cubs as they're tied for the best record in the National League early in June. After that, the guys discussed the Cubs' plan to get their regulars a little more rest in the coming weeks.
The Milwaukee Brewers came into the week having not swept any series this year, and now they've swept them back-to-back. Including two walk-off wins, an eight-run inning, a series of strong individual hitting performances, Milwaukee took down Boston at home and then cleaned up against the best team in the National League, Philadelphia. Brewers reporter Todd Rosiak and host JR Radcliffe discuss how real it is, the somewhat concerning injury to Christian Yelich, the decision to cut ties with Tyler Alexander, the back-to-back rough starts from Freddy Peralta, the excellence of Rhys Hoskins and the ascendance of Caleb Durbin. In Three Up Three Down (25:00), they discuss big Sal Frelick moments, Chad Patrick and Quinn Priester and the walk-off grand slam by Yelich. Remembrew When looks back at another memorable walk-off granny (40:10) against Boston and Todd's Take of the Week looks at the big homestand ahead (46:15). Then, JR sits down with Brewers reliever Abner Uribe (49:30), discussing his origins with the Brewers, his celebrations and more. That's followed by a conversation with USA TODAY sports columnist Bob Nightengale (55:15) to discuss the viability of Brewers owner Mark Attansio as a candidate for baseball commissioner, looming labor strife in the league and how the Brewers are regarded nationally.
