Paul Frasca and his partner Ewelina Soroko are really changing the world, the masterminds behind sustainable salons what started out as a trip around Australia talking to 160 hair salon owners discovering so much waist which had know where to go from their findings they estimated 1 million kilograms of foils to landfill every year.. Sustainable salons was born in 2015 now hundreds of members in Australia and New Zealand and not just servicing the hair salon industry but also Beauty salons, dermal clinics and pet grooming salons.Sustainable salons are truly leading the way not just recycling foils, colour tubes, cardboard,paper,magazines,razor blades, unwanted tools and selected disposables but collect hair clippings from salons stuff in stockings to help clean up oil spills along our coast line. Hair is also repurposed in local community gardens for composting. All collected ponytails 20cm or longer are distributed to charity to create wigs for cancer suffers.The one thing I really love is sustainable salons has partnered with Endeavour foundation providing a future for people with disabilities helping these individuals live a purposeful life and a critical part of the sustainable salons vision. They also employ over 55 and love the great work ethic and they are just so happy to have a job...This podcast blew my mind and it is one of my goals to have sustainable salons visiting my area they are changing the world for the better and can't imagine what they will think of next..

In episode 28 of the Design Your Life Podcast Vince chats with Paul Frasca, a passionate hairdresser and determined environmentalist who alongside his partner Ewelina Soroko have created the innovative and hugely successful recycling business, Sustainable Salons Australia. The program collects up to 95% of the salon's waste bin and repurposes it in various ways such as using hair for the making of wigs, utilising pet hair to help clean oil spills or turning old salon bottles into fashionable sunglasses. What started out in the garage of his parent's house has now grown into a nationally focused venture which to date has collected more than 90,000 ponytails that have then been repurposed for cancer and alopecia sufferer. Additionally, over 125,000 kg of metals have been diverted from landfill and in excess of 100,000 meals have been provided to homeless people through recycling proceeds. He was a salon owner by the age of 19. Winning a prestigious Hairdressing Award took him to Europe where he styled an elite clientele for the next decade. His passion for sustainability started when he lived in Amsterdam where he met his partner Ewelina Soroko, a passionate environmentalist. Their travels brought them to Australia where they researched salon waste and discovered that hairdressers send one million kilos of aluminium foils to landfill every year. That was the catalyst to start Refoil, the industry’s first sustainably-minded foiling concept and recycled foil product. But their commitment to making salon waste history was only just beginning. In 2015 the pair started an innovative resource recovery program called Sustainable Salons. Designed especially for the salon environment, Sustainable Salons collects up to 95% of the salon’s waste bin and repurposes it for environmental and community benefit, while rewarding the salon. The program has been awarded Best Business Service of the year in 2016 at the Australian Hair Industry Awards and Best Business Performance of the year at the Hair Expo Awards. Sustainable Salons was also presented with the Special Recognition Award at the 2017 Australian Hair Industry Awards and became finalist at the Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards the same year. Paul started his career in the hair salon business at the tender age of 11, and then began working full time as a hairdresser at age 14.  This career took him around the world and into the most glamorous places as he did the hair of the rich and famous. Yet, Paul didn’t find his true purpose until he met his partner, Ewelina. One of the areas that I have thought a lot about over the years, is the financial sustainability of social ventures. I think it's fair to say that my track record on this is mixed.   The positive intention has without doubt been there.    For example, I started writing the outline for the business that became TVN in the foreword of the book by Mathew Bishop Philanthrocapitalism    I bonded with TVN's co-founder Josh Ismin whilst at a Microsoft event in Atlanta where Blake Mycoskie founder of Tom's Shoes was the keynote speaker.    In fact, the original business model for TVN had a 10% profit share baked into it, for investment in a social venture. Sadly we never managed to operationally align TVN and the social venture we identified.   That did not stop me trying again, however, this time in a seed investment in Andable which was a digital marketplace that gave 10% of the sales transaction profit to Kiva, a microloans organisation that provides credit to small businesses in the developing world.  Unfortunately, I know now more about the economics of a successful digital marketplace than I did in 2012 and sadly Andable is no longer around.   So it was with these best intentions and a little bit of scar tissue that I got to sit down with today's guest Paul Frasca,  CEO of Sustainable Salons. Paul is a serial entrepreneur who has been able to not only create an organisation that is sustainable in the re-use of waste sense of the word but has also built a social venture that is self-sustainable from a financial sense.     Paul is a super interesting character and if in years to come scientists find the DNA that is linked to being an entrepreneur he would undeniably have it!  We talk about the innovation and incubation stage of the startup and go deep into Paul's journey with Sustainable Salons before finishing with an exploration of some of the future use cases for how technology could build a brighter future.   Hope you enjoy and thanks again to Paul Frasca.
