Turner's humorous remark on discussing hair without personally having any sets a light tone for the intense subject matter. Frasca shares his journey from hairdressing to pioneering sustainability initiatives, influenced in part by his italian heritage and sustainable living principles inherited from his grandparents. The conversation dives deep into the specific waste challenges within salons, including metals, plastics, and human hair, and how Sustainable Salons has developed innovative solutions to transform these waste products into valuable resources. Using hair to clean up oil spills and create fertilizers are just two of their groundbreaking initiatives. Paul also sheds light on the logistics and operational challenges behind making sustainability viable, capturing the importance of point-to-point solutions and vertical integration in recycling. The episode underscores the need for industries to adapt swiftly to sustainability norms and the role of brands in driving this change.Key Takeaways:Sustainable Salons Initiatives: Sustainable Salons tackles waste in hair salons by recycling metals, plastics, and even human hair, converting these into useful products like hair booms for oil spills and fertilizers.Three-Pillar Approach: The organization's sustainability strategy focuses on people, planet, and profit, ensuring that environmental solutions also benefit communities and businesses financially.Educational Outreach: The company integrates sustainability into educational frameworks, making it a part of the curriculum in hairdressing schools to inspire future generations.Reverse Logistics: Effective recycling relies on sophisticated reverse logistics and point-to-point solutions, which Sustainable Salons has meticulously developed.Global Potential: Sustainable Salons is setting a precedent in Australia and New Zealand, with potential applications in other regions and industries, encouraging innovation and partnership in sustainability practices globally.Notable Quotes:"I never came from some green world… I was born in Australia, but having italian migrants, grandparents and parents, they grew up a very different way." - Paul Frasca"Each boom, just to give you some stats, can hold up to eight times its weight, and it's highly attractive to oil." - Paul Frasca"So we've had to build it from scratch. And right now we have far better software than the courier companies do." - Paul Frasca"If we're going to solve this egg, we're going to have to crack it, right? We're going to have to really get in here and solve this problem." - Paul Frasca"The way you're thinking is just so 1980s, it's dead. You've got to rethink sustainability from the ground up." - Paul FrascaResources:Sustainable Salons: WebsiteTeslar: WebsiteCritical: WebsiteSoils Alive: WebsiteOz Harvest: WebsiteKiwi Harvest: WebsiteFor more insights and to stay updated on groundbreaking sustainable solutions in various industries, make sure to listen to this episode and stay tuned for more content from Shape the System. Paul Frasca and his partner Ewelina Soroko are really changing the world, the masterminds behind sustainable salons what started out as a trip around Australia talking to 160 hair salon owners discovering so much waist which had know where to go from their findings they estimated 1 million kilograms of foils to landfill every year.. Sustainable salons was born in 2015 now hundreds of members in Australia and New Zealand and not just servicing the hair salon industry but also Beauty salons, dermal clinics and pet grooming salons.Sustainable salons are truly leading the way not just recycling foils, colour tubes, cardboard, paper, magazines, razor blades, unwanted tools and selected disposables but collect hair clippings from salons stuff in stockings to help clean up oil spills along our coast line. Hair is also repurposed in local community gardens for composting. Small Biz Matters – a half hour program each week where you can work ON your business rather than IN it.with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner.Date: 21 January 2020 The future, sustainability and social enterprise go hand in hand but what is often missing from this equation when starting a business is long term profitability. You can’t sustain a business on goodwill alone and even if you are able to tap into all the kindness out there you’ll eventually run out of customers or steam. So how can you find that perfect balance and Profit for Purpose? Sure, it’s easy to put sustainability in the too-hard, the I-don’t-know-how or I-don’t-know-how baskets - but can we really afford to do that now? Today you listeners are in for a treat. You’ll learn that through hard work, perseverance and a passion this balance can be found. We are joined on Small Biz Matters by Paul Frasca - a giant in the sustainability world. In 2015 he and his partner Ewelina Soroko founded Sustainable Salons dedicated to reducing waste in hair salons - the industry where he first started. He’s an international speaker; who remarkably never uses notes on stage and listening to him inspires. He’s not afraid to speak his mind on the future of not only his industry but all of small business and is passionate about sustainability being the non-negotiable driving force. Welcome to the show Paul. Topics we’ll be covering: How did you start this 'hairy' business :) In your experience as a leader in the small business world; why do you think there is such a huge movement towards sustainability and social enterprise? Where do you believe this momentum is coming from? How does Sustainable Salons work and what practical tips can you give other small business to become more sustainable? In general, why do you think it’s important that small businesses join a professional association and collaborate together within an industry? How can everyday people support the sustainable salons movement? To find out more go to their website: https://sustainablesalons.org/ PAUL FRASCA CO-FOUNDER & MANAGING DIRECTOR Paul Frasca started his hairdressing career at the age of 11. He was a salon owner by the age of 19. Winning a prestigious Hairdressing Award took him to Europe where he styled an elite clientele for the next decade. His passion for sustainability started when he lived in Amsterdam where he met his partner Ewelina Soroko, a passionate environmentalist. Their travels brought them to Australia where they researched salon waste and discovered that hairdressers send one million kilos of aluminium foils to landfill every year. That was the catalyst to start Refoil, the industry’s first sustainably-minded foiling concept and recycled foil product. But their commitment to making salon waste history was only just beginning. In 2015 the pair started an innovative resource recovery program called Sustainable Salons. Designed especially for the salon environment, Sustainable Salons collects up to 95% of the salon’s waste bin and repurposes it for environmental and community benefit, while rewarding the salon. The program has been awarded Best Business Service of the year in 2016 at the Australian Hair Industry Awards and Best Business Performance of the year at the Hair Expo Awards. Sustainable Salons was also presented with the Special Recognition Award at the 2017 Australian Hair Industry Awards and became finalist at the Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards the same year. Paul’s role as Managing Director takes him all around Australia and New Zealand speaking to audiences in the waste management, hair, beauty, fashion, hospitality, medical and education industries, all interested in learning how to adopt a more sustainable approach in their everyday lives and businesses. Paul also volunteers his time as a board director for The Australian Hairdressing Council where he is responsible for improving the industry’s environmental practices.
In this episode, I chat with Paul Frasca – the co-founder and director of Sustainable Salons in Sydney, Australia. Paul started his career in the hair salon business at the tender age of 11, and then began working full time as a hairdresser at age 14. This career took him around the world and into the most glamorous places as he did the hair of the rich and famous. Yet, Paul didn’t find his true purpose until he met his partner, Ewelina. Together they are eliminating waste in the Australian hair salon industry while feeding thousands of people through their corporate donations. One of the areas that I have thought a lot about over the years, is the financial sustainability of social ventures. I think it's fair to say that my track record on this is mixed. The positive intention has without doubt been there. For example, I started writing the outline for the business that became TVN in the foreword of the book by Mathew Bishop Philanthrocapitalism I bonded with TVN's co-founder Josh Ismin whilst at a Microsoft event in Atlanta where Blake Mycoskie founder of Tom's Shoes was the keynote speaker. In fact, the original business model for TVN had a 10% profit share baked into it, for investment in a social venture. Sadly we never managed to operationally align TVN and the social venture we identified. That did not stop me trying again, however, this time in a seed investment in Andable which was a digital marketplace that gave 10% of the sales transaction profit to Kiva, a microloans organisation that provides credit to small businesses in the developing world. Unfortunately, I know now more about the economics of a successful digital marketplace than I did in 2012 and sadly Andable is no longer around. So it was with these best intentions and a little bit of scar tissue that I got to sit down with today's guest Paul Frasca, CEO of Sustainable Salons. Paul is a serial entrepreneur who has been able to not only create an organisation that is sustainable in the re-use of waste sense of the word but has also built a social venture that is self-sustainable from a financial sense. Paul is a super interesting character and if in years to come scientists find the DNA that is linked to being an entrepreneur he would undeniably have it! We talk about the innovation and incubation stage of the startup and go deep into Paul's journey with Sustainable Salons before finishing with an exploration of some of the future use cases for how technology could build a brighter future. Hope you enjoy and thanks again to Paul Frasca.
